Retirees solve a cozy murder

The so-called cozy murder genre has exploded in recent years, utilizing a well-worn formula in which the focus shifts from the grisly homicides to the crime-solving antics of amateur sleuths.

Based on the whodunit bestseller of the same name, The Thursday Murder Club is blue-chip all the way, directed by Chris Columbus (whose vast credits range from Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire to The Help and the first two Harry Potter movies) and starring Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie. The quartet play residents of a retirement home who get together once a week to play detective, attempting to crack unsolved murders for fun — until they find themselves dragged into an actual homicide investigation.

Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, Columbus shared his conviction that viewers will be as drawn to the story as he was. “There’s a wonderful mystery at its core, so mystery fans will be very happy,” he says. “But thematically it’s interesting that we’ve got four elderly people who are living in a retirement community and who are fascinated by death and murder. They are facing their own demise, yet at the same time they are

obsessed with studying cold cases. I fell in love thematically with that. It’s comedic, but it’s also very emotional.”

In addition to the four stars, Columbus has assembed an impressive supporting cast that includes Tom Ellis (Lucifer), Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones), David Tennant (Broadchurch), Naomi Ackie (Mickey 17 ) and Richard E. Grant (Saltburn).

“This is the finest cast I’ve worked with since Potter,” adds Columbus. “They’re just so incredibly well-prepared, and it’s because they do everything. They do theatre, they do television, they do film, and they’ve developed those sorts of muscles.”

Really hoping And Just Like That . . . will be back again? This last year was definitely their best yet. S.N., West Vancouver

We’re sorry to say that the romantic misadventures of Carrie Bradshaw and her pals have reached an end after three seasons on HBO. Eulogizing his Sex and the City sequel on Instagram, creator Michael Patrick King said: “While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That . . . season three, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop.” That said, some pundits have pointed to low ratings and high production costs (including reported $10 million salaries for leads Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis) as the true culprit.

CASE TO CASE?

Was just wondering what’s up with that show Presumed Innocent. I know season one covered the whole book . . . T.Y., Langley

As previously reported, Apple TV+ is moving forward with a second season of its hit legal thriller, based on Scott Turow’s 1987 novel — which previously inspired a 1990 film starring Harrison Ford. Adapted by prolific TV creator David E. Kelley, season one hewed close to the book, casting Jake Gyllenhaal as Rusty Sabich, an Illinois prosecutor who lands

on trial for the murder of a colleague with whom he was having an affair. It ended on something of a cliffhanger, as Rusty learned that the real killer was not a vengeful convict, but someone devastatingly close to him. Yet season two will actually move away from Rusty’s story and, indeed, the novels of Scott Turow, as producers have nabbed the rights to author Jo Murray’s yet-to-be-published Dissection of a Murder. Per a summary from publisher Pan Macmillan: “When Leila Reynolds is handed her first murder case, she’s shocked at how

high-profile it is: the murder of a well-respected, well-known judge. This shouldn’t be the kind of case she’s leading; it’s way beyond her expertise. But the defendant, Jack Millman, is clear. He wants her, and only her.”

We now know Leila will be played by Rachel Brosnahan, Emmy-winning star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Lois Lane in the recent Superman reboot. She will also exec-produce the season. Meanwhile, Irish actor Jack Reynor (Midsommar) has just joined the cast in an undisclosed role, possibly as the mysterious defendant.

Dissection of a Murder hits bookshelves on May 7, 2026. A date for season two of Presumed Innocent is still TBA.

they’re not just leaving it like that without coming back [for another season]?

S.N., North Vancouver

Not to worry! HBO has already renewed creator Julian Fellowes’ lavish foray into New York high society circa the 1880s for a fourth season. It’ll pick up in the wake of robber baron George Russell’s shocking decision to leave wife Bertha, after the latter manipulated him into arranging a loveless but socially advantageous marriage for their daughter. Chatting with the Los Angeles Times post-finale, star Carrie Coon assured fans there is reason to hope for reconciliation: “I don’t know what will happen to George and Bertha. I know that Bertha is relentless, and she won’t give up. But what I love too is that George has had a near-death experience . . . and he is starting to question his own life, his own choices. I think it’s actually quite complicated that he’s struggling so mightily, even though we know historically their marriage has been very solid, very honest, very sexy.”

I loved the 1980s TV series The Greatest American Hero, and wonder if the lead actor, William Katt, is still active?

C.L., North Vancouver

ASome shows, despite low ratings or harsh reviews, nonetheless capture the hearts and minds of viewers who just never forget them. That’s exactly the case with ABC’s The Greatest American Hero (1981-1983). William Katt starred as schoolteacher Ralph Hinkley (later changed to Ralph Hanley after a man named Hinckley tried to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981). Ralph was the unexpected recipient of a suit, created by space aliens, that gifted him with superpowers. Just one problem — the instructions were lost and he had to use trial-and-error to figure out how to operate the thing. With his surfer-boy good looks and a shock of curly blond hair, Katt attracted a devoted following, largely among young women.

After the series was cancelled, he worked in many one-off roles on television and film. His mother was Babara Hale, best known as legal secretary Della Street on Perry Mason (19571966), and Katt appeared alongside her in a number of Mason TV movies during the ’80s, playing Paul Drake, Jr., the son of Perry’s go-to private detective. His closest brush with major fame actually came years earlier, in 1975, when he auditioned for the role of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars opposite Kurt Russell, who was vying to play Han Solo. Obviously, neither actor landed the gig.

Despite working steadily over the decades, Katt never again achieved Hero status in Hollywood.

MY LIFE WITH THE WALTER BOYS

Thursday, Netflix

The YA sensation based on Ali Novak’s 2014 novel continues with a second chapter. Season one found smart, determined 15-year-old Jackie Howard sent reeling after a car accident claimed the lives of her parents and sister. Forced to leave New York to live with her mom’s old friend Katherine Walter and her seven sons in rural Colorado, the culture shock was nothing less than staggering, but Jackie adjusted . . . and fell in love with not one but two of the Walter boys: bookish Alex and jockish Cole.

Season one wrapped with a cliffhanger, as both

brothers professed their love, leading the confused girl to flee Silver Falls for her old home of NYC — much to the whole family’s surprise.

Speaking with Tudum, star Nikki Rodriguez teased what’s to come: “Jackie’s trying to figure out where she belongs. She definitely doesn’t want to lose either side of herself and tries to make sure that they could co-exist.” Meanwhile, of this ongoing, exceptionally messy love triangle, co-star Ashby Gentry (a.k.a. Alex) added: “Jackie, Alex and Cole are figuring out who they are and what they want by allowing themselves to change.”

We also know it’s an episode that will bring us to the end of Stephen King’s

2019 novel — but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the series. While it has yet to be renewed, showrunner Benjamin Cavell and Stephen King himself both envision a life beyond the pages of the book. As Cavell told Assignment X: “From the beginning, Stephen and I had always talked about the idea that there’s more to it. I think that the book obviously suggests that there’s a much bigger world and conspiracy, and stories to tell . . .”

SERIES PREMIERE

FallingHeroes

Back in 2022, The Terminal List introduced audiences to James Reece (Chris Pratt), a Navy SEAL commander struggling to unravel the conspiracy that led to his entire team being wiped out on a mission in Syria — complicated by the fact that Reece himself was recovering from a traumatic brain injury. At the end of the day, it turned out that one of the key culprits in the slaughter was Reece’s old friend Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch), who was hip-deep in some dirty business with a big pharma company that had been secretly experimenting on Reece’s unit.

The series has been renewed for a second season, set to deploy sometime in 2026. But first, Ben Edwards (who is a little too dead to be involved in season two) will get a prequel series all his own, premiering Wednesday with three episodes.

As Terminal List author Jack Carr explained to USA Today: “[Ben] was done much better in the series than I did in the novel. These guys elevated it to the level that fans wanted a prequel

THE TERMINAL LIST: DARK WOLF

origin story on this character.”

Set five years before the original, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf tracks Edwards’ fraught journey as he’s forced out of the SEALs and stumbles into the morally murky world of CIA special ops. As Kitsch teased to USA Today: “One split-second decision changed the course of his life. You’re not only stripping the bird off his chest, you’re stripping away a piece of who this guy is and his purpose . . . You’re going to learn a heck of a lot more about who Ben really is and these twists and turns that led to that decision [to betray his former comrades].”

On that note, Pratt’s Reece does return in a supporting role here, but this time Kitsch is mostly teamed up — odd-couple style — with The Umbrella Academy’s Tom Hopper. He plays fellow SEAL Raife Hastings, described as a “hunter, protector and guardian.”

SEASON FINALE

The Big Goodbye

The fraught reunion between brothers Glen and Lee wraps season two with a final pair of back-to-back episodes. In the first, Glen’s long-bubbling personal meltdown finally reaches critical mass . . . only to be interrupted by Sue. Then, the entire dysfunctional family gathers at a carvery for “what may be the most awkward meal of all time.” In episode two, Sue gets manipulative and Lee looks to tie up a few loose ends, while Glen and his fiancée Kirsty scramble to solve a problem. All told, season two has made for another raunchy, off-the-wall lark that balances its shocks and guffaws with a nuanced take on relationships, what it means to “be a man” and the complexities of identity — all explored via the bond between two exceptionally different siblings.

Hopelessly buttoned-down Glen in particular has found his whole sense of self upended this year, due to not only the continued presence of his long-lost bro and some shocking revelations about their father, but an

evolving dynamic with Kirsty. As the trauma has piled up, Glen’s failure to deal with it led to some troubling ticks — like compulsive hair-pulling and random outbursts of profanity.

“That film Falling Down, and things like Breaking Bad — I really love that,” star/creator Ryan Sampson told TV Week of his influences for this specific storyline. “Very normal, repressed people having weird, big emotions leaking out them.”

That said, as much as the arrival of Lee has thrown Glen’s life and mental health for a loop, Sampson’s BAFTAwinning co-lead Danny Dyer believes these two estranged brothers are better together than apart. “They’re good for each other,” Dyer asserts, before cautioning: “But, you know, it’s always on the verge of crashing down. Meanwhile, Sylvia (Rose Byrne) resolves to plan the perfect party for her husband’s law firm, but after learning this year’s gala

But tonight’s true dramatics spring from Charlie (Luke Macfarlane), who realizes a longtime dream of competing on Jeopardy! It’s a life-changing moment . . . and, alas, not in a good way — sending Charlie (and reluctant wingman Will) on a boozy after-hours quest both of them will regret.

In a case of popular culture eating its own proverbial tail, the past decade has borne witness to several movie franchises that were adapted into successful LEGO toy lines before being adapted back to the screen . . . in toy form. Take, for example, the Disney Princesses.

In August of 2023, the Mouse House released a special titled LEGO Disney Princess: The Castle Quest, which found the iconic likes of Tiana, Moana, Snow White, Rapunzel and Ariel transported against their will to a mysterious stronghold, where they learned that Gaston (of Beauty and the Beast infamy) was plotting to

take over their respective kingdoms. The ladies swiftly banded together and took him down.

Now, in this sequel, Gaston is back for revenge . . . and he’s brought a few fiendish friends with him in the form of Ursula, Jafar and the Evil Queen. But with a little help from Magic Mirror, the aforementioned Princesses call on some reinforcements of their own: Cinderella, Aurora and Gaston’s archenemy, Belle.

The A-list cast, returning to voice their Princesses from both the previous special and the original bigscreen films, include Auli‘i Cravalho as Moana, Mandy Moore as Rapunzel and Anika Noni Rose as Tiana.

By the time I learned about the drug, I had already lost people to it,” Ice T says of how he’s been impacted by the lethal synthetic opiate. “It’s a poison in the drug world, and I wanted to do everything that I could to make people aware of its danger.”

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.

The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the figures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Viewer Tip Regarding Promotional Ads on TV

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

THE MARLOW MURDER CLUB ON MASTERPIECE

Sunday, 6 p.m. & 10 p.m., WTVS; 9 p.m., KCTS

hen retired archaeologist Judith Potts (Samantha Bond) witnessed her neighbour’s murder, and the local constabulary in her quaint English village wrote her off as a crackpot, she enlisted two other locals — dog-walker Suzie Harris (Jo Martin) and Vicar’s wife Becks Starling (Cara Horgan) — to help her solve the crime themselves.

So began the first season of The Marlow Murder Club, which found the trio’s unexpected skill at sleuthing utilized by DCI Tanika Malik (Natalie Dew) to help solve a series of murders that rocked their bucolic little town.

As the second season begins, things are just starting to return to normal

in Marlow, which is beginning to settle down after last season’s string of horrible homicides. It doesn’t take long, however, for the three to be called back into action when a fresh batch of crimes befall the town, once again leaving police baffled.

“From a seemingly impossible murder inside the locked study of a sweeping

incredible journey of how the women, primarily Judith, solve that. And then there’s a mystery set in a more modest bit of Marlow where one murder happens right at the beginning and then another body is discovered, and might there — or might not there — be a link? And the third one is at the sailing club. The wonderful thing about The Marlow Murder Club is that the whole thing is on location in Marlow. So when you go to the rowing club, it’s in Marlow; when you go to the sailing club, it’s in Marlow.”

mansion to the mysterious case of a man with no connection to the town murdered in the middle of a sleepy cul-de-sac, and an unexpectedly brutal accident at the prestigious Marlow sailing club that quickly reveals itself to be something more sinister, there’s no rest for our sleuthing trio,” declares the second season’s synopsis. “Navigating the delicate balance of Marlow society — from local aristocracy to the workers at the local boatyard, the pubs and cafes of the high street to a newly established archaeological dig — Judith, Becks and Suzie dig into all corners of Marlow life as they assist DCI Tanika Malik in her official investigations.”

As Bond explains, the first season served as a springboard to the new one, which finds the women stretching out and settling into their new roles as amateur detectives.

“Well, season one is one story, and season two is three stories,” Bond says. “You’ve got a posh murder that happens at Sir Peter Bailey’s house, which is an

“The people of Marlow are extraordinary. It could have gone two ways — they could have got really fed up with us for taking over the town, running around their streets and closing their cafes, and they haven’t. They’ve been really supportive. They walk past you in the street and thank you.”

As Bond points out, Marlow isn’t a fictional setting, but a real-life town in Buckinghamshire, situated alongside the Thames, about 50 kilometres or so west of London. Luckily for producers, the local residents love the show, and have gone out of their way to cooperate with filming taking place in their town.

“In an episode all about someone trying to redevelop an estate that was built back in the 1960s, we filmed in the estate and all the residents agreed to have their windows blacked out,” Bond recalled. “The people of Marlow are extraordinary. It could have gone two ways — they could have got really fed up with us for taking over the town, running around their streets and closing their cafes, and they haven’t. They’ve been really supportive. They walk past you in the street and thank you. They’ve enjoyed season one very much and they’re looking forward to season two. So really, I suppose what I’m trying to say is that the big star of the series is the town itself.”

Meanwhile, there’s even more good news for fans; a third season has already been greenlit. “Following the huge success of the first two series, we’re thrilled to return with another instalment where Judith, Suzie, Becks and our police team are faced with three puzzling new mysteries to solve,” adds Claire Hookway of UKTV, which produces the series. “We’re excited to treat the audience to more joyous fun in the beautiful town of Marlow, with many surprises and clever twists in store.” ■

Jenna Ortega returns for a new season of Tim Burton’s Addams Family-inspired hit

WEDNESDAY

ince The Addams Family first debuted as a comic strip in 1938, the eccentric gothic family has found success in all kinds of iterations — including the now-iconic 1964-’66 TV sitcom and an ever-expanding film franchise. The latest, a supernatural mystery comedy from Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and legendary director Tim Burton focuses on the family’s deadpan daughter Wednesday, and instantly became a pop culture phenomenon.

After an inaugural season that garnered the show Emmy nominations for Best Comedy and Jenna Ortega as Outstanding Lead Actress, it is understandable that the creators were somewhat anxious about following their winning formula with, well, more of the

same. “It’s something we talked about a lot,” says Gough. “I think we didn’t want to rest on our laurels.” Adds Millar: “The sophomore slump is pretty famous, so we were very focused on making sure that this was even better than season one in terms of scale, but also the character dynamics. Increasing the ensemble helped as well. Characters that people wanted to see more of in season one,

they see a lot more of in season two.”

From the get-go, that means the increased presence of Morticia and Gomez Addams, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán. “It was wonderful that they created such a beautiful arc for us to play,” says ZetaJones, who plays the black-clad family matriarch. “The Addams Family is such a

modern family when you think of it. We’re a family that embraces idiosyncrasies and outcast traits, and we encourage them. It was wonderful, in season two, to be able to explore that, for us to be within Wednesday’s world, even though she didn’t want us to be there.”

The Addams Family expands even further this season, with Grandmama Hester (Absolutely Fabulous alum Joanna Lumley) paying a visit to her alma mater, Nevermore Academy. “She’s ghastly,” delights Lumley. “The only person she really likes is Wednesday, because she can see in her a kind of spirit of danger, daring — everything that she doesn’t see in Morticia. She’s grand, she’s vain, she’s greedy, and she sees in Wednesday a shining light.”

The qualities her grandmother values in Wednesday are also what

Wednesday’s parents, Morticia and Gomez Addams (Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán) play a larger role in the new season.

Ortega enjoys the most about her character. “Most often when you have character discussions it’s about what makes them insecure and what’s their painful quality that they would hate to admit. Wednesday doesn’t have any of that,” says Ortega. “She’s so clearly and obviously herself. It’s nice to step into those shoes.” When inhabiting the character, Ortega finds that it is Wednesday who dictates what works and what doesn’t. “When I was figuring out, how does she stand or how does she carry herself, it’s very obvious when something isn’t Wednesday or doesn’t suit her,” she says. “It’s almost like she comes with a list of rules. And anytime I feel lost or confused in a scene, I just go back to those qualities . . . or just leave the room. If I didn’t have a reaction I would just walk out of the shot.”

That doesn’t mean Wednesday doesn’t care deeply. As we come to discover in the second season, when her roommate Enid (Emma Myers) appears to be in trouble, there is nothing she won’t do for her best friend. Still, there is no need for displays of affection. “She really lets her guard down with Enid at the end of the first season, and the second season, she doesn’t want to be

questioned on her relationship with Enid, it’s just that she’s become family,” says Ortega. “Wednesday isn’t very vulnerable in general, but she never denies her love, hate or passion for her family and Enid just naturally becomes that.”

As the show’s production moves from Romania to Ireland, what remains deliciously consistent — if not better — are the visuals that exemplify this graphic world. “The truth is that actors have to invent stuff, we can act against white paper or green screen. However, once you step into one of these sets, it gives

you something completely different,” says Lumley. “You’re not making it up. You’re walking down a great creaking corridor, you’re going into the principal’s study, which is immense with a blazing log fire. Tim always does this — he always makes stuff that is perfect.”

Burton, who was drawn to this world from the get-go, says, “When I read season one, I felt strangely like it was written for me. Even though I’m not a teenage girl, I feel like one sometimes and it’s something that really spoke to me.”

Making the show work with his signature tone, a mix of light and dark with some absurdist humour, is something the director (who helmed the season two opener) didn’t worry much about. “Life is a mixture of all those things together,” he says. “It was so fun to see all this stuff come to life, because they’re larger than life characters, but it’s very symbolic of what you feel about most normal families. I don’t know one family that’s not weird. You know what I mean?” ■

AbFab alum Joanna Lumley joins the cast as Grandmama Hester, whose relationship with daughter Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is more than a little rocky.
Emma Myers returns as Enid Sinclair, Wednesday’s roommate at Nevermore Academy and her de facto best friend.

JURASSIC GIANTS

Walking with Dinosaurs blends state-of-the-art CGI with the latest scientific findings to update a TV classic

WALKING WITH DINOSAURS

Tuesday, 6 p.m. & 9 p.m., BBC Earth

SERIES PREMIERE

B ACK IN 1999, the BBC nature documentary series Walking with Dinosaurs made quite the splash. Six years after Steven Spielberg introduced the world to Jurassic Park, the BBC Science Unit utilized this new technology to produce a series in which CGI and animatronic dinos inhabited live-action footage. The most expensive documentary

series per minute to ever be produced also became the most-watched science program on British television in the 20th century.

A quarter-century has passed and not only has CGI technology improved, but what we now know about dinosaurs has also warranted a new stroll with these prehistoric beasts. “It felt like a fantastic time to revisit the series because the science and the amazing work that experts are doing has progressed to such a degree that there were new stories to bring to screen,” says executive producer and showrunner Kirsty Cohen. In fact, the stories are so good that, “sometimes audiences question us as filmmakers, like, ‘You’re making that all up.’ And we could literally go, ‘No, see the evidence for yourself, coming out of the ground.’”

But perhaps even more importantly, the producers felt dinosaurs had a reputation to restore. “I come from a natural history background and I felt like people were reducing dinosaurs to mythical beasts alongside dragons,” says Cohen. “These were not just crazed monsters chasing Jeeps. They were real animals with complex lives that faced challenges. I wanted people to understand that and sympathize with them. We felt the best way to do that was to tell a singular story of one individual. It was that amazing drama rooted in real science that we set out to achieve.”

In six brand-new episodes, viewers are introduced to a variety of species, through one fleshed-out dino. The adventures of Clover the baby Triceratops, discovered at a dig site in Montana — not far from the remains of a Tyrannosaurus rex — opens the show. Other episodes take the viewers to the Moroccan Sahara for one of the largest predatory dinosaurs: the Spinosaurus. In Alberta, paleontologist Mark Powers has unearthed a teenage Albertosaurus, a smaller version of a T-rex capable of reaching speeds of 30 miles per hour. Last but not least, the Lusotitan, known as El Grande, roams the Iberian Meseta in episode six, hoping of winning over a mate.

The series also mixes dinosaur escapades with real-life dig sites. One of the

Two adult Spinosauruses — believed to be the largest known carnivorous dinosaur — square off on the bank of a river.

paleontologists lending her Indiana Jones vibe to the series is Emily Bamforth, whose findings in northern Alberta stand out, in part, for just how prolific they are. “Our episode features a site we call the Pipestone Creek Bonebed, one of the largest and densest dinosaur bonebeds in North America,” says Bamforth. “It’s all one type of dinosaur called a Pachyrhinosaurus; an older, smaller cousin of the Triceratops, but with this big bony bump on their nose. We think the Pipestone Creek Bonebed represents a herd of these animals that died in a catastrophic event that we understand to be a flash flood.”

The fifth episode focuses on Albie, a baby Pachyrhinosaurus that is on a seasonal migration

with his mother and the other members of his herd. “What [astonished] me when seeing the episode itself was the size of this herd. We estimated the size to be about 10,000, but it wasn’t really until I saw that actually depicted in the episode that I was like, ‘Wow, that really was a lot of animals,’” says Bamforth. In the episode, little baby Albie interacts with other species in the ecosystem and his own herd, unaware that the end may be near. “What I really liked about the episode was that as scientists, we sometimes think very unemotionally about events,” says Bamforth. “We’re like, ‘This is a bonebed of tens of thousands of animals, fantastic.’ We have adults, babies, juveniles, the entire herd that all died at once. If you think about it, this would’ve been a terrible day for those

Pachyrhinosauruses. I think building in those emotions connects people to dinosaurs in a way that people are often connected with animals today.”

While the series showcases animals that no longer roam the earth, Bamforth says we shouldn’t view dinosaurs as merely a thing of the past. “In order to understand where we are and who we are, we have to understand where we’ve come from,” she says. “The only way we have to do that is through fossils and our geological past.” And, as we continue to face climate change, science can show us the trajectory of those who were previously affected. “As we’re facing things like the fifth mass extinction, in order to mitigate it and know what we can expect, the only reference we have is the past,” says Bamforth. “Dinosaurs are very informative of where we are today and where we’re going in the future.” ■

AI looms large in the fourth and final season of quirky sci-fi comedy Upload TECH AFTER LIFE

UPLOAD

Monday, Prime Video

Death comes for us all, but in the near future world of Upload, there are more choices of afterlife than you would expect as the fourth and final season debuts this week.

Robbie Amell returns as Nathan Brown, who has been through the virtual wringer for three seasons, starting with a life-threatening car accident and a choice between surgery or being uploaded to the digital afterlife where he will be able to continue to participate in relationships with his loved ones via virtual reality headsets. Choosing the latter, Nathan begins life after death in the digital world of Lakeview, which quickly reveals the inequities of uploaded life.

Rife with hidden expenses and cheaper, lower tiers of digital afterlife akin to purgatory, he comes to realize the actual experience of living forever in a virtual realm is not as advertised.

Disillusioned, Nathan leaned on his afterlife handler Nora Antony (Andy Allo), a living woman who works for Horizen, the tech company that runs Lakeview, and away from his wealthy girlfriend

Ingrid Kannerman (Allegra Edwards). In the upcoming season, per Prime Video, an evil AI threatens to eliminate the digital afterlife, and, “on top of greedy executives, lingering mysteries, plus heartbreak in VR and IRL, our characters are tested like never before.”

Before entering the digital afterlife, Nathan was a computer programmer on the cusp of making a deal to bring his free Lakeview alternative to life. Those with a financial interest in keeping premium virtual experiences expensive may have had a hand in Nathan’s death, but that is only a small part of the conspiracy that’s unravelled throughout the Upload.

Nathan and Nora, together with help from Aleesha (Zainab Johnson) in the real world and Luke (Kevin Bigley) and AI Guy (Owen Daniels) in Lakeview, exposed a diabolical political scheme to entice Americans in swing states to upload and lose their right to vote. Later, the two took Horizen to court with the hope of establishing human rights for uploads. While they managed to win compensation for families of uploads, the settlement details were

Ivan (Josh Banday), Lucy (Andrea Rosen) and Aneesha (Zainab Johnson).

sealed, no rights were obtained and Horizen started operating under new branding, calling itself Betta. As Betta, under the guise of accountability, Horizen had Nathan detained for threatening to leak their dirty laundry — and that is where last season’s finale episode left off.

Though Nathan made the choice to upload in part to be with Ingrid, her lies and ulterior motives drove a wedge between them, ending their relationship. While things were complicated with Ingrid, Nathan grew closer to Nora, who was reluctant to share her own feelings for Nathan and jeopardize her career with Horizen and, subsequently, her access to Lakeview,

where they were able to spend time together.

The will-they-won’t-they finally came to a head when Ingrid’s secret Nathan clone was discovered, which he downloaded into to better help Nora take down Horizen in the real world and be with her. Nathan stepped out of the virtual world and back into real life but was mistakenly duplicated in error in Lakeview. Two Nathans lived simultaneously: virtual Nathan in love with a changed Ingrid, and clone Nathan in a romance with Nora.

The Nathan duplicate went under the radar with Horizen until the trial, where he was caught physically by authorities and virtually in Lakeview. In a video call with his loved ones, all he is able to tell them is that there is only one Nathan now. Which one it is, however, still remains a mystery.

During a recent panel appearance at Comic Com in San Diego, Upload

creator Greg Daniels (whose other TV credits include NBC’s The Office, Parks and Recreation and King of the Hill) teased some highlights for the new season — including the role of AI. “I think fundamentally the point we’re trying to make is that AI needs to be given a value system the way a teenager does,” Daniels explained. “Sort of any new member of society has to be inculcated with the values of your society or it’s going to be destructive. So our message, which is probably being ignored, is that we really need guardrails and a sense of ethics in the AI.”

According to Daniels, the final batch of episodes taken together is “sort of like a big fat movie. But we’ve also spent time exploring some new ideas. It’s not all wrapping up and callbacks. There’s a lot of new weird things to explore. They go to a longevity spa for tech billionaires, which we talked about in the last season. Each episode has got its own storyline and theme. We also go to another upload. I think there’s a lot of good stuff.” ■

Honey Don’t!

STARRING: Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Evans, Charlie Day, Billy Eichner

In this solo directorial effort, Ethan Coen (of Coen brothers fame) delivers a follow-up to his 2024 lesbian road-trip comedy Drive-Away Dolls, the first of a planned trilogy starring Margaret Qualley. Here, Qualley is Honey O’Donahue, a small-town lesbian private investigator in Bakersfield, California, boasting a hard-boiled attitude right out of a 1950s noir flick. When she’s not fending off the advances of a male cop (Charlie Day) who refuses to believe she’s gay or falling into the arms of a female officer (Aubrey Plaza), her typical gigs involve catching cheating spouses — until the death of a local woman leads Honey to investigate a whodunit involving a megalomaniacal minister (Chris Evans) heading a shady megachurch that’s actually a sinister cult.

QHow freeing is it to operate in this wacky post-apocalyptic playground?

A

Unhinged, anything goes, no holds barred . . . Can we do this? What if we did this? It really reminds me of sitting around with my high school friends, just riffing and trying to make each other laugh and be ridiculous and one-up each other. Who’s gonna make somebody pee their pants? It’s weirdly joyful . . . a weird thing to say about a show where you’re in a car and you’re trying to kill other people!

Q What kind of journey does Quiet go on this year? How does she evolve?

A The whole point of season two is that Calypso is real. And not only is he real, but he is holding a tournament for everyone in the land. If you’re brave enough to enter, then you could get your greatest wish. That’s what everybody in the tournament is after. Each of them is after something individual, but Quiet’s wish is to bring down all the walls . . . everywhere. The guiding light for her is some form of equality, some form of the world where the people that have everything don’t get to just keep it all behind the walls and starve everyone else to death, and drive us to murder.

That is a very admirable thing to want, but what happens if you start to care about people around you in the tournament? Do you sacrifice for the greater good? When do your ethics and values come into play? And when do they go out the window?

Q

That said, as fans of the video games know, Calypso doesn’t always grant

MEMORABLE ROLES:

Born in Neuquén, Argentina, but raised in Webster, Texas, Stephanie Beatriz rose to fame and acclaim as take-no-prisoners cop Rosa Diaz for all eight seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine More recently, she starred with Ted Danson in retirement-home mystery comedy A Man on the Inside. She’s also a prolific voice actor on cartoons like Bob’s Burgers, Big Mouth and big-screen Disney smash Encanto, wherein she played the lead role of Mirabel.

CURRENT GIG:

wishes the way that the wisher expects . . .

ASee, that’s the great thing about being an audience member watching this — because the characters don’t know that. They are putting their trust in this epic person who seems to have powers that nobody else can access. But how do we know he’s trustworthy? Really, all we know is that he’s powerful.

Q What exactly does your new co-star, Anthony Carrigan, bring to Calypso?

AHe’s perfect. He’s terrifying, hilarious . . . a little dash of interestingly sexy. There’s something equal parts whimsical and totally evil about the way he’s playing this character. I could never have imagined it on the page the way that he’s brought it to life.

QHaving spent eight long seasons on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, is there a part of Det. Rosa Diaz that still lives in you?

AI think there’s a part of myself that I didn’t realize was as strong as she is.

Wrapping season two this Thursday with three new episodes, video game adaptation Twisted Metal casts Beatriz as Quiet, a battle-tested post-apocalyptic survivor competing in a bonkers car derby — in hopes of winning herself a wish that will change the world.

SEASON FINALE

I think the same goes for Quiet . . . My Rosa really comes out when I’m driving — I live in L.A. No one should know what I’m saying to other drivers while I’m in my car [laughs].

Q Did working on Brooklyn give you an appreciation for how even the goofiest comedy can tackle real social issues?

A I think comedy’s always been able to do that. Some of my favourite stuff growing up was, like, I Love Lucy. There’s this silly little housewife that wants to be in her husband’s shows; meanwhile, this is a couple that’s a white woman and a Latino man on television [in the ’50s]. They basically created the sitcom. She was really the draw; it was a female star at the head of this thing. You take something else that I was really obsessed with when I was a kid: the Muppets . . . that absurdist tone that hits you right in the heart. That is where a lot of really good comedy lives. It’s this very strange, silly world that also lands as real.

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy

What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?

To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our

survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues.
