Editor’s Note
In January 2019, Empire star Jussie Smollett filed a report with the Chicago Police Department, claiming he’d been the victim of a hate crime. The actor alleged he was attacked by masked men hurling racial slurs, who dumped a chemical powder on him and placed a noose around his neck.
Those who followed the saga encountered a seemingly endless series of twists and turns that only became stranger the deeper they plunged down the rabbit hole, The story unravelled even further after two Nigerian brothers came forward to reveal the whole thing was a hoax, that Smollett had paid them a few thousand bucks to fake an attack. Smollett was tried and convicted of five felony charges, but the verdict was subsequently overturned on a technicality.
A new Netflix documentary takes another look at Smollett’s scandal, by interviewing police, lawyers, journalists and even the actor himself, with bombshell claims of “new evidence about the case.”
According to the logline, the film tells the “shocking true story of an allegedly fake story that some now say might just be a true story,” presenting fresh evidence and inviting viewers to draw their own conclusions.
“This story is a thrilling ride, and we were lucky enough to have access to the key players,” said director Gagan Rehill in a statement. “I wanted this documentary to balance their competing narratives and to also use their compelling, colourful testimonies to thread the light and shade of the story through the film. But much more than that, I wanted this film to speak to the particular moment of rapid cultural change when this takes place in 2019; when, as a society, we were becoming more combative, more polarized, more divergent over our shared reality — when we began to lack a common singular truth.”

We just watched that last episode of Librarians. Hope it’s not cancelled!
R.F., North Vancouver
The Librarians: The Next Chapter debuted to much acclaim this past spring on CTV Sci-Fi, reinventing the saga of a secret society that guards mystical artifacts and defends the world from supernatural forces. (The original Librarians series ran from 2014-2018.)
Luckily, The Next Chapter had a two-season order right out of the gate — and they’re already nearly done filming part two. The always-eccentric guest cast next year will include Lost ’s Dominic Monaghan, Pitch Perfect’s Flula Borg and Canadian Lindy Booth, reprising her role as telepathic mathematician Cassandra Cillian from the original show.

Tulsa King has probably been Stallone’s best role ever since Rocky. We were wondering when (or if!) it’s coming back?
D.N., Vernon
One of Paramount+’s moststreamed series, the pulpy crime drama about exiled New York gangster Dwight Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) building an empire in the purgatory of Oklahoma has, indeed, been renewed for a third season — which debuts on Sunday, September 21.
Time-travelling Librarian leader Vikram Chamberlain (Callum McGowan) will return for another slew of unpredictable adventures.
Per Paramount: “As Dwight’s empire expands, so do his enemies — and the risks to his crew. Now, he faces his most dangerous adversaries in Tulsa yet: the Dunmires, a powerful old-money family that doesn’t play by old-world rules, forcing Dwight to fight for everything he’s built and protect his family.”
Heading up the Dunmire clan is veteran character actor Robert Patrick (still best known as the killer robot from Terminator 2) as ruthless liquor baron Jeremiah.
But the most exciting addition to this cast is
Samuel L. Jackson enters the fray on Tulsa King in season three, playing an old friend of Dwight’s (Sylvester Stallone) who’s primed to become an underworld kingpin in his own right.

Revenge or Redemption?
NAUTILUS
Sunday, 6 p.m., 8:07 p.m. & 10:14 p.m., AMC
The voyage of Captain Nemo and his ragtag crew comes to port for season one with a supersized finale. As they at last home in on that longprophesied treasure, they find the riches are guarded by “wild warriors,” and Nemo questions whether he’s led his submarine-mates to the edge of the world for nothing. In part two, Nemo et al. have a new mission: taking down the East India Company that once enslaved them. To do so, they start spreading rumours that the once-all-powerful organization is about to go under (so to speak). As the Company’s share prices
plummet, all of the owners are summoned to a meeting . . . which is precisely what Nemo and his merry band were counting on.
As star Shazad Latif told TV Week of his character’s arc from the pilot to the finale: “We’re watching a guy who’s hellbent on doing anything he can and taking risks and putting people in danger to get what he needs and wants — which is revenge. And I think, by the end, we’re watching someone who learns that you need the people around you and you need to be vulnerable . . . you have to open yourself up.”
In 2007, a young American exchange student named Amanda Knox saw her dream semester in Italy turn to a nightmare when she was accused and ultimately convicted of killing her roommate, Meredith Kercher. She spent four years in prison before an appeals court overturned the verdict, but the Italian justice system wasn’t done with her just yet. The path to full exoneration
would take over 16 years, and the damage to her life would never truly be undone.
SERIES PREMIERE
In a new series from This Is Us writer K.J. Steinberg, Grace Van Patten (Nine Perfect Strangers) stars as Amanda, bringing fresh insight and empathy to a misunderstood story, while Bad Sisters’ Sharon Horgan plays her devoted mother, Edda Mellas. The real Amanda Knox serves as an exec producer.

Political Animus
The fate of a nation and the fate of a family collide in this new political thriller from Matt Charman, the Oscar-nominated writer behind Bridge of Spies.
Abigail Dalton (Doctor Foster’s Suranne Jones) is a U.K. prime minister facing a national healthcare crisis. Vivienne Toussaint (the Before trilogy’s Julie Delpy) is the first female president in France’s history, currently seeking re-election and forced to consider some controversial policies if she hopes to stick around in office. Both leaders hope that a high-profile summit can cure what ails their careers. But when the PM plays host to the president in Britain, the stakes are raised beyond mere polling numbers, as Dalton’s husband is kidnapped and Toussaint herself is blackmailed in a coordinated attack that pits the two against each other and effectively holds two countries hostage.
Forced into a slew of “unimaginable choices,” the only chance these rival leaders have is to find some way to work together, uncover the conspiracy

that threatens to unravel both of their lives, and turn the tables on a most mysterious common enemy.
Speaking with Tudum, Jones enthused: “I’m thrilled to be on Netflix, in something I’m really proud of. It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. We’d talked about projects previously, but for me, it was about finding the right thing. Hostage was perfect — me and Matt together, backed up by this brilliant, supportive team. I loved it.”
Meanwhile, aforementioned series creator Matt Charman sang the praises of his star: “I’ve been dying to find the right story to tell with Suranne and I honestly believe what she’s done with this character is going to blow the Netflix audience away. An embattled British PM in the middle of a fight for her country and her family — she’s fierce, ruthless and you can’t take your eyes off of her.”

In January 2020, BoJack Horseman ended its run after six seasons. It was a hoof to the head for fans of a cartoon that, while trafficking in outrageous antics and deft Hollywood satire, also plumbed the depths of the human condition with empathy and complexity.

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

Kids show off their creativity in LEGO Masters Jr.
LEGO MASTERS JR.
Monday, 8 p.m., CTV2 & Fox
Some very lucky kids are about to live out every child’s dream: access to unlimited LEGO bricks and a blank canvas for their imaginations to run wild. In the brand-new series LEGO Masters Jr., five pairs of junior builders spanning ages nine to 17 get to team up with celebrity LEGO enthusiasts to compete in weekly challenges and bring their creations to life, brick by brick. Kelly Osbourne hosts. In each episode, the LEGO building teams work under the pressure of the
countdown clock to piece together themed sculptures. When time runs out, they must face the judges, who are expert builders themselves, whom viewers might recognize from Fox’s adult-size LEGO-building series. Brickmaster Amy Corbett, who’s also a judge for LEGO Masters, and one of the finalists from its first season, Boone Langston, make up the LEGO Masters
judging panel.
Impressing the judges each week not only gets the little brickmasters closer to earning the title of LEGO Masters Jr. champions, but a grand prize totalling nearly US$50,000. Andy Richter, Ravi Patel, Porsha Williams, Alison Sweeney and Jordin Sparks are the celebrity partners joining the contestants.

In an official trailer for the upcoming series, the contestants’ enthusiasm is palpable, even falling out of their chairs with excitement before tugging at heartstrings when the waterworks start as the stress of the competition becomes too much. The little engineers construct a speeding LEGO car, and use the Disney castle, Harry Potter and Ninjago as inspiration for weekly build challenges.
So, who are these tiny brickmasters? Working with Richter are 13-year-old neighbours and best friends Will and Crosby from Minneapolis. Best friends Stella (12) and Chelle (14) have Sparks on their team, who shared in a Variety exclusive on the new series that she is
“not a Master level yet, but I’m pretty good at following the instruction booklets!” So it sounds like they make a solid trio together.
Siblings Max (nine) and Zoe (13) from Greenville, South Carolina, are almost neighbours to their celeb helper, Williams, from Georgia. The reality star told Variety that LEGO is a big deal in her household, saying, “my daughter Pilar thinks it’s the coolest thing that I am on LEGO Masters, and when she gets older, she will be the first to sign up.”
Brothers Ajay (13) and Zak (11) know exactly what they came to LEGO Masters Jr. to do and are prepared to execute their vision. Their celebrity helper, Sweeney, was on the receiving end of their instruction and said in the trailer, “I haven’t been bossed around like this in a long time.” Finally, Patel, a devoted LEGO Masters fan, is teamed up with Vincent (nine) and Hudson (11) from Portland, Oregon. Patel told Variety that
he is a lifelong LEGO fan, reached out to be on the show and can’t wait to watch with his kids. He is matched for intensity with his partners, all three of them showed up ready to fight wearing their karate gi.
The regular Fox series, based on the British series of the same name, has run for five seasons with Will Arnett, the voice of LEGO Batman in 2014’s The LEGO Movie, as the host. It was announced in June that season six of LEGO Masters will be welcoming a new host in Nick Cannon, as Arnett passes the torch. Cannon is, of course, known for hosting the Fox staple The Masked Singer, and also stepped in to keep Beat Shazam rolling while regular host Jamie Foxx recovered from a stroke in 2023.
“It’s an honour to join the series and host another show with my Fox family,” Cannon said in a statement, adding, “I can’t wait to see the insane creations and give away a big bag of money to the best of the best.” ■

PLATONIC
Wednesday, Apple TV+
here aren’t many TV shows with casts you just want to hang out with. In the past these have included Cheers, Cougar Town, Friends, Happy Endings — even You’re the Worst. But these days a “folks I’d like to have a beer with” comedy is harder to come by. Thankfully, Platonic returns with a second season of quirky new adventures for best friends Will (Seth Rogen) and Sylvia (Rose Byrne) to scratch that itch. “The tone and style of the show is very specific: light and fun and, in a nice way, it doesn’t have incredibly high stakes moment to moment,” describes Rogen. “It kind of reminds me of the sitcoms that I grew up watching, like Seinfeld, where its main directive was to explore comedic situations.”
Having rekindled their college relationship in the first season these two are now free to find the fun in midlife, in ways only Will and Sylvia can. The fact
that they are a man and a woman who are not romantically involved, that’s more of a problem for others. “The setup is really about how everybody else feels about them being platonic friends, rather than the actual friendship,” says Byrne. “Once it’s revealed that it’s super
dysfunctional, what they bring out is the best and worst in each other.”
This season that means tackling marriage and other societal expectations,
The friendship between Sylvia (Rose Byrne) and Will (Seth Rogen) veers into some new directions in season two.
particularly in Will’s case. “It’s about trying to be comfortable where he is, even if it’s slightly out of step with what his peers expect of him or he thinks he should do,” says Francesca Delbanco, who created the series with her real-life husband Nicholas Stoller. “There are certain markers of adulthood that Will doesn’t necessarily yearn or crave, but he still feels some kind of compulsion to check them off the list; have a real corporate job that’s in a structure we all understand and get married and maybe have a family. His struggle is

coming to terms with the fact that he doesn’t have to want the same things that people around him might want.”
For Sylvia, the season delves into what happens when a midlife rut is suddenly disrupted. “There is a way in which life as you get older becomes kind of samey samey. You’re married, you have kids, you’ve got to wake up and take
them to school and do the things,” says Delbanco. “But things do not always stay the same. Things come out of left field in your life, dynamics in your family and in your marriage will change and you have to acknowledge them.” Surprisingly, it is Sylvia’s husband Charlie, played by Luke Macfarlane, who throws a wrench into their stable life. “Charlie is, for the

first time maybe ever, looking around and being like, is this the life I want to lead?” says Stoller. “Sylvia’s always assumed her marriage is going to be the same and I think Charlie becomes a surprising agent of change — something that she turns to Will for help with, because his life is always chaos.”
Delbanco and Stoller, who initially based the series on Delbanco’s real-life friendship, continue to happily cull more Platonic storylines from their own lives. “There’s a core emotional truth to what these characters are going through that I think that reflects our experience and our writers’ experience,” says Stoller. Delbanco adds that making the show feel like a true slice of life is what makes it endlessly refillable and relatable. “It is kind of the joy of doing it,” she says. “I often joke that when we get into the writer’s room, we ask everybody to push their worst stories and experiences and most conflicted relationships into the middle of the table so we can sort through them. But once you start actually dealing with the specific story, none of them will be exactly beat-by-beat mirroring your life.”
It’s that close-but-not-quite element to the series that off-screen friends Byrne and Rogen enjoy most about their characters. “I don’t personally relate to Will all that much, it’s more something I see in people that I’m friends with — this sort of midlife crisis, not being able
L-R: Jenna (Rachel Rosenbloom), Charlie (Luke Macfarlane), Sylvia (Rose Byrne) and Will (Seth Rogen).
to settle down, not knowing what you want, not knowing what’s good for you, grasping at straws to find yourself even as you’re in your mid-40s,” says Rogen.
“The tone and style of the show is very specific . . . It kind of reminds me of the sitcoms that I grew up watching, like Seinfeld, where its main directive was to explore comedic situations.”
“That’s something I see a lot and it is very funny.” Though Sylvia is far more nosy and energetic than Byrne, she acknowledges some similarities to her character. “I do relate to raising small kids. When you’re in the trenches with little kids, that just changes things. And it’s crazy being middle aged. Like, how did this happen? I was always the youngest person in the room and now I am not.”
Even if not basing it on their lives, Byrne says Delbanco and Stoller know how to write to their strengths. That’s the easy part, according to the couple. “Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne are two of the funniest people alive and they have such amazing chemistry,” says Delbanco.
“Getting to write these characters for them is a huge part of the pleasure of creating the show.” Adds Stoller: “We knew that on this show, being friends, they would be able to fight all the time and that it was going to be very funny to watch these two actors fight with one another. They’re obviously the key to making this whole show work.” ■
Sylvia (Rose Byrne) and Will (Seth Rogen) navigate fresh terrain in their frienship as Will prepares for his wedding to Jenna (Rachel Rosenbloom).
New prequel series delves deeper into the saga of Outlander
Jamie Fraser’s parents, Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) and Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater).
Claire’s parents, Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield).
OUTLANDER: BLOOD OF MY BLOOD

s Outlander starts approaching its end, the epic love story of Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp about to head off into the sunset in early 2026, fans need not worry about their Scottish period romance fix. In Blood of My Blood, the creators of Outlander explore the origin story of Jamie’s parents, Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) and Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater), the Romeo and Juliet of the Scottish Highlands. But to make the series truly fitting of its time-travel genre, Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts had a stroke of genius: What if Claire’s parents didn’t die in a car accident but accidentally traveled back in time to the 1700s? And what if, without them being in Scotland, there would be no Brian and Ellen?
The result is two love stories with high stakes and built-in fan investment, complete with book author Diana Gabaldon’s seal of approval. “The Brian and Ellen story was thread through the books,” explains Roberts. “We’ve heard stories about how they met and eloped,
but the Julia (Hermione Corfield) and Henry (Jeremy Irvine) story wasn’t there. There’s so much room to explore that love story and how the stories connect.”
Even for those who read Gabaldon’s books and devoured details about Jamie Fraser’s parents, watching their love story unfold on screen is sure to please. “For Brian and Ellen, it’s very much love at first sight,” says Slater. “It is described in the script as a ‘thunderclap moment,’ when lightning strikes and these two souls who are destined to be together finally meet. They fall in love with each other before they even know who the other is. It is not until the second meeting that they find out that they’re from rival clans, but it’s too late. They’ve already decided that their hearts belong to each other.”
The love between Claire’s parents has its beginnings in the First
World War and starts to simmer sight unseen. “It’s an epistolary romance to begin with,” says Corfield. “It’s a meeting of minds through words.” Once the two unite in person, they become inseparable until the dreaded stones tear them apart. While Julia longs to be reunited with her husband, her determination to conquer all that the 18th century throws at her is not just about Henry. “A lot of her choices are perhaps more for her children than for herself,” says Corfield. “But that’s love, isn’t it? Love is what drives them all to make the decisions that they make, and I think it just proves that love is the strongest force in the world, stronger than hate and fear.”
As viewers are currently more familiar with their offspring than the characters themselves, Roberts and his writers made sure to infuse some

of Jamie and Claire’s essence into their parents. “Ellen’s definitely got the MacKenzie fire, that’s how Jamie gets that. And I think Jamie always thinks a few steps ahead. He probably gets that from Brian, who is very introspective. They also have a sense of fairness that I think he gets from both of them,” says exec producer Maril Davis. On Claire’s side, Henry is the one who gives his daughter her romantic side. The steely resolve, demonstrated in different ways, is a quality inherited from both parents.
“Love is what drives them all to make the decisions that they make, and I think it just proves that love is the strongest force in the world, stronger than hate and fear.”
“That curiosity to know everything and look at things with wonder, that comes from Julia who has this innate instinct to just learn and learn and learn. And, also, to strive for something other than what society says you can be,” says Roberts. “And Henry is a fighter who will fight for the things that he loves, with a blind passion sometimes. We’ve seen Claire do that over the course of the show. That comes from Henry, whereas Julia might think it all the way through.”
Roberts and Davis also saw Blood of My Blood as an opportunity to expand the storylines of characters often seen on Outlander, but never truly explored. “On Outlander, we wanted to stay central with Jamie and Claire so everything flows through them,” says Roberts. “That’s not the case on Blood of My Blood. We can go down other roads with other characters, because I think the fans really want to know about Murtagh, Colum and Dougal, and how they became who they became. It opens up a lot of doors.” One door that remains closed, however, is a
meet-and-greet between Claire and her parents, however far in the future it may be. “That’s canon in both the book and the show, so she can’t know that they meet,” says Roberts. “You can read into that any way you want.”
What you don’t need is an advanced degree in Outlander to enjoy the prequel. “I don’t think you need to know anything,” says Roberts. “You can come into [the series] and fall in love with these characters. And if you want to know more, you go watch Outlander. You don’t have to watch it, but I recommend it highly. Then you can play along and see some of the nuggets that are in there. You get all these little Easter eggs and you go, ‘Oh, that’s what that means,’ so you’re almost watching it two ways.” ■
Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine), Claire’s father, serving in the trenches in the First World War. Frustrated with the state of war, he writes a letter to the Times, which is intercepted by Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield).
Murtagh Fitzgibbons (Rory Alexander) is Brian Fraser’s cousin and best friend, who goes on to become Jamie’s godfather and confidant in the original series.

JOHN CENA RETURNS WITH A NEW SEASON OF TWISTED SUPERHERO COMEDY PEACEMAKER
PEACEMAKER
Thursday, 8 p.m., Crave1
s Bob Dylan famously declared more than six decades ago, the times they are a-changin’, and that’s as true today as it was then. It’s also the case for another (fictional) world: the DC Universe.
When American filmmaker James Gunn and British producer Peter Safran took over as co-chiefs of DC Studios in 2023, they announced that the existing DC Extended Universe would be abandoned in favour of a more streamlined sequence of reboots and reimaginings. Thankfully for fans of John Cena’s Peacemaker, the patriot — like DC mainstays including Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman — has made the cut. With this in mind, the muscly, no-nonsense hero is back this month in a big way, more than three years after his titular series premiered in early 2022.
As originally described by HBO Max (formerly Max) via its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, “Peacemaker follows the explosive escapades of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of James Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad — a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.”
Now, after Peacemaker (a.k.a. Christopher Smith) has recovered from
his injuries and waged his own brand of justice, in the second season he “discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be.” However, “this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands.”
Cena appeared at a recent Peacemaker Q&A at ComicCon in San Diego — costumed as his character, no less — and weighed in on Peacemaker experiencing an alternate universe in which he’s beloved by the public, not considered to be a joke. According to Cena, the character “is going through a rough patch in life and thinks the grass might be greener on the other side. That’s something people can relate to.”
“Peacemaker is a different guy this year. He’s dealing with the demons he uncovered from the first season and trying to deal with them, and the world is not accepting him the way he is. They aren’t accepting him as a hero.”
Gunn — who wrote all eight episodes for the second season — explained that he wanted to take the character’s journey into some audacious new directions. “I really like TV shows where the characters don’t just return every season and they’re the same exact characters,” he said. “I want to see growth. I want to see change and sometimes regression. And Peacemaker is a different guy this year. He’s dealing with the demons he

uncovered from the first season and trying to deal with them, and the world is not accepting him the way he is. They aren’t accepting him as a hero.”
As for Cena’s co-stars, Danielle Brooks returns as Leota Adebayo, daughter of Suicide Squad founder and ARGUS (Advanced Research Group Uniting Super-Humans) leader Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), along with fan favourites Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Jennifer
Holland as Agent Emilia Harcourt and Steve Agee as Agent John Economos.
Peacemaker’s racist father, August “Auggie” Smith (a.k.a. White Dragon) will return, with Robert Patrick reprising the role. In addition, Peacemaker’s trusty avian sidekick Eagly (voiced by American Dad’s Dee Bradley Baker), also returns for the new season.
New additions to the cast include Tim Meadows, Sol Rodriguez and Frank
Grillo as Rick Flag, Sr., who has more than likely come to settle the score after Peacemaker killed his son, Rick Flag, Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) in Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad. When Den of Geek asked Cena about his expectations for Peacemaker, he was bullish about the future. “I can confidently say that the future of Peacemaker is one that will defy the odds,” he declared. ■
Freddie Stroma is back as Peacemaker’s goofball sidekick, Vigilante.
Agent John Economos (Steve Agee) and Langston Fleury (new cast member Tim Meadows).

THE HUNTING WIVES Crave (Stream)
QWhat does Margo see when she looks at Sophie [Brittany Snow], this brighteyed young newcomer to her group?
A“A new toy!” Margo is smart. She may not use her smarts for good, but she is definitely smart and she wants smart people around her. She likes the challenge, she likes to be titillated. Sophie brings in a freshness and I think Margo really likes it, respects it, wants that on her side. She pulls her in because she wants a powerful woman beside her — but also someone who seems like she can control, because her best asset is being able to control people. There’s always an agenda with Margo, there’s always something to get out of it. But I think the initial feeling is, “Oh, this is a fun new shiny toy, and I want it . . . and I’m gonna have it.”
QThe dynamic of this hunting club is really quite the vipers’ nest . . .
AIt’s catty! It’s the worst of what you can see in women. Very different from my life where, over time, I have gathered a group of incredible women who support each other. This is the complete opposite of that. When your goal is just to be at the top of the social ladder and your values are not lined up with what you actually are, what you should be searching for, this is what you get. You get a bunch of women clamouring for the top. They do not want to upset the top dog because they don’t want to be cast out, because if you’re cast out of this circle, it’s such a small town that you’re cast out of everything. It’s not a very nice insight into female relationships, but these kinds of relationships do exist. We
MEMORABLE ROLES:
Born in Sweden, raised in Toronto and now a Hollywood star, Malin Akerman got her break as conflicted crusader Silk Spectre in 2009’s Watchmen; she also played the girl of Ben Stiller’s nightmares in twisted rom-com The Heartbreak Kid; and popped up in Couples Retreat and 27 Dresses. Meanwhile, her TV résumé includes shortlived sitcom Trophy Wife, absurdist medical spoof Childrens Hospital and hit Wall Street drama Billions.
CURRENT GIG:
watch it on reality TV, on the Housewives of Whatever
It’s a very hypocritical small town. People talk one way and act the complete opposite. That’s always fun to watch.
QSo, you’re not Canadian, but you do have quite the history with Canada.
AI’m officially a Swedish citizen. I never ended up getting my Canadian citizenship, funnily enough. I was here for 22 years, but when we first moved over, Sweden didn’t allow dual citizenship, so we just kept the Swedish and we were landed immigrants for a long time. But growing up here, it’s very much a part of me and my most developmental years of my life. So, I feel very Canadian, but I also sense that there’s something different about me because I, culturally, was raised Swedish. And Los Angeles is home now. So I feel like what a mutt must feel like [laughs]. But coming back to Toronto, it really feels like I’m coming home.
Akerman leads this soapy eightpart mystery as Margo, queen bee of a women’s hunting club in East Texas. A “master manipulator,” our antiheroine meets her match when young Sophie (Brittany Snow) enters the hive — just as a dead body sets the whole town abuzz.
I don’t mind it. I really don’t. And you also get to use it when you want. When you’re travelling and they go, “Where are you from?” you go, “I’m Canadian.” People always love Canadians.
Q There used to be a large divide between film and TV in terms of the “prestige.” Does that exist at all anymore?
A Not that I see. I think for many of us, if anything, TV is more coveted. It’s a job that lasts a bit longer. The character arcs are a bit longer. We have incredible directors who are going to television, incredible show creators. Unfortunately, we’ve seen a decline in movie theatre-goers, and I hope that comes back around, but people are really clamouring to their home screens. All the streamers are offering so many great, different shows — and outlets for women my age; that wasn’t really a thing back when I started 20 some-odd years ago. So, there used to be kind of a taboo — “You don’t do television.” Now, everyone wants to do it.
The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
