WSEASON PREMIERE
hen It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fist arrived back in the summer of 2005, it’s doubtful anyone — including the show’s stars and creators — would have predicted that fans would be eagerly anticipating the show’s 18th season more than two decades later.
Yet here we are, with Sunny holding its spot as the longest-running liveaction sitcom in TV history.
Fans can prepare for another batch of venal, vicious and always-hilarious behaviour from the gang: Mac (Rob Mac), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Sweet Dee (Kaitlin Olson) and Frank (Danny DeVito). Over the course of 18 seasons, we’ve seen these knuckleheads botch one get-rich-quick scheme after another, ranging from selling stolen gasoline door-todoor to deliberately getting hooked on crack in order to become eligible for welfare.
In the upcoming season, the gang receives an inheritance, deals with tent encampments and copes with job loss due to workplace automation. Episode titles include “Frank Marries a Corpse,” “The Gang Goes to the Ren Faire” and “The War on Alcohol,” while fan-favourite recurring characters like Uncle Jack, the McPoyles and Cricket will be returning.
In her recent book — It’s (Almost) Always Sunny in Philadelphia: How Three Friends Spent $200 to Create the Longest-Running Live-Action Sitcom in History and Help Build a Network — journalist Kimberly Potts zeroed in on the secret sauce that’s kept the show chugging along for so many seasons. “The thing that stands out most overall is just how much everybody has a good time on the show,” she wrote in the book. “Going there as a guest star, one of the recurring actors, the crew, the writers, they all tell me something and laugh as they were telling it, because they were clearly thinking back on some happy memory . . . no one ever had a bad thing to say. And that’s pretty unusual about a show that’s gone on that long.”
During Disney’s recent D23 “Ultimate Fan Event,” one of the highlights was a special live performance, “Disney Princess: The Ultimate Concert Celebration.” Held at Paradise Gardens at the California Adventure theme park, the “spectacular performance brings together the largest gathering of Disney Princess talent ever assembled, celebrating the iconic stories across animation, live-action, stage, and music,” notes a press release for the event — which, at the time this issue went to press, had yet to take place. “This one-of-a-kind concert will transform the night with dazzling lights, sweeping projections, and sky-high fountains creating a truly immersive world where the music, magic, and legacy of Disney Princesses shine like never before,” the synopsis adds. While performers were kept secret until the last minute, rumoured singers included Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid) and Paige O’Hara (Belle in Beauty and the Beast).

This reality show brings together four of South Korea’s most popular personalities and sends them on a huge hike through snowy mountain peaks. The twist: not a single one of them has even the teeniest interest in hiking. Despite that seeming deal-breaker, the stars set out on “an epic midwinter journey across the snow-capped mountains of Korea for the first time in their lives. Hiking with their own two feet, the series becomes an unexpectedly charming test of grit, teamwork, and good humour.” The four stars are: singer Car, the garden; Dowoon, youngest member and drummer of K-pop group Day6; actor Lee Chae-min (Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, Cashero); and rapper, actor and model Tarzzan of K-pop outfit AllDay Project.
Back for a sixth season, this harrowing true-crime documentary series follows actual people who’ve been placed under arrest, following them through the jail intake and booking process. We’ve been adoring the last Interview With the Vampire series. Super-cool new direction! Hope the network shot-callers plan to keep going?
—G.G., Burnaby
After a third season that changed the title of the hit drama from Interview With the Vampire to The Vampire Lestat, AMC shall indeed continue with a fourth chapter. This one will also be re-monikered — again in line with a novel from author Anne Rice’s “Vampire Chronicles.” It’ll come as no surprise to avid viewers (and readers) that this instalment, set for 2027, is called Queen of the Damned, after Rice’s 1988 tome — and will find Lestat and Louis tangling with ancient “mother of vampires” Akasha, reawakened in the modern era after a centuries-long slumber. Akasha, played by Sheila Atim, debuted in this past Lestat season. She was previously brought to the big screen in a 2002 Queen of the Damned film, starring the late Aaliyah.

What’s up exactly with Wonder Man? It was one of the best, freshest things Marvel’s done in awhile . . .
—V.M., North Vancouver
Debuting all at once on January 27, 2026, the eightepisode Wonder Man did, indeed, shake up the Marvel Cinematic Universe with its satire of a superpowered actor (Watchmen Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) battling to secure a part in the next big superhero blockbuster — in a world where superheroes are barred from Hollywood stardom. In addition to AbdulMateen II, the show featured Sir Ben Kingsley, reprising the role he originated in 2013’s Iron Man 3 as Trevor Slattery, the degenerate actor masquerading as a supervillain.
The series was actually greenlit for a season two in March 2026. Then, in July, Disney+ unexpectedly revoked that renewal — effectivel putting Wonder Man on ice and leaving both fans and those making the show to wonder why.
As co-creator Andrew Guest mused on TikTok (via Variety): “The writers’ room was supposed to start this month. The production was supposed to begin early next year, and there was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them, even though a few months ago it did. And that’s essentially all I really know.”
After a third season centred on Lestat’s rock-star daze, chapter four of AMC’s oft-retitled Anne Rice adaptation will put the spotlight on newly awakened (and quite peckish) mother of vampires Akasha (Sheila Atim).

I remember a 1960s sci-fi series called The Invaders, which starred Roy Thinnes. My brother says it was not ’60s, but mid-’90s — and he proved it with a Google search. Can my memory be 20 years out?
–O.W., West Vancouver
You are correct in your recollection of the Roy Thinnes-led production that aired on ABC from 1967-1968. Yet your brother is equally right in his remembering a 1995 version — with not only the same title, but the same star.
The premise for both series was the same. Roy Thinnes — who, a few years earlier, originated the role of Dr. Phil Brewer as an original cast member on iconic daytime soap General Hospital — got his true claim to fame via The Invaders. He played architect David Vincent, who spotted a mysterious UFO on a dark country road late one night.
As the show’s voiceover told us at the start of each episode, “David Vincent knows they are here” — “they” being aliens bent on doing no good to
making the rounds promoting other projects.
Unfortunately/delightfully, most of that chatter has taken the form of these erstwhile co-stars pranking each other with allegations that the other actors are the ones holding up a revival.
Johnson, for instance, quipped this past March during a panel at the SXSW festival [via Deadline] that: “We’re all in besides Lamorne . . . Because he got an Emmy [for Fargo] and he thinks they’re better than us. And I have direct quotes saying, ‘I’m too talented and
the human race. The extraterrestrials in question took human form, but as we learned, they had a “tell” — a pinky finger that stuck out awkwardl, making it possible to identify them.
Even though the show only had a short, two-year run, the David Vincent character was named No. 6 on a list of sci-fi legends in television history compiled by TV Guide in 2004.
In 1995, the show was rebooted as a Fox miniseries — now starring Quantum Leap’s Scott Bakula but featuring a much older David Vincent, still played by Roy Thinnes.
The new version disappeared after its initial airing, but MeTV runs original 1960s Invaders episodes on late-night weekends to this day.
too funny to be on a sitcom with you, hacks.’ ”
The latest, seemingly much more earnest volley comes from Greenfield during an appearance on NBC’s Today With Jenna & Sheinelle (via The Hollywood Reporter), saying that he has “seen scripts” from New Girl creator Liz Meriwether and “they’re amazing.”
Perhaps unsurprisingly, that’s prompted Meriwether to playfully wade into the fray, claiming on Instagram that, “the scripts were pretty good, until everybody started giving me notes . . .
“Jake wants [his character] Nick to be really thin . . . He asked to have a dance number with him, fully nude, dancing to ‘Levitating’ by Dua Lipa . . . Lamorne keeps asking for more and more jewelry. For his character, he wants a very long chain . . . And then Max has just been very adamantly asking to be the New Girl. Like, he wants the title to be, ‘Max Greenfield Is the New Girl’ ” All told, we can’t tell if a reboot is imminent, never happening or somewhere in between . . . but we can’t say we’re not entertained!

Outer Banks
THURSDAY, NETFLIX
Set on along the titular string of North Carolina islands, Outer Banks introduced us to the “Pogues” — a gaggle of hard-luck, working-class, largely shirtless teens who, when one of their fathers goes missing, embark on a swashbuckling adventure to dredge up the sunken fortune dad was on the trail of when he disappeared. Across four seasons thus far, they’ve also pursued mythical “City of Gold” El Dorado, and, most recently, a possibly magical artifact called the Blue Crown — once pillaged by Blackbeard himself. All the while, they’ve clashed with preppy teen rivals the Kooks — not to mention the cops, fellow relic hunters and, of course, the ever-mercurial Mother Nature.
Now, John B (Chase Stokes) and his crew reach the series’ proverbial “X,” with a fifth an final hunt tht fans can only hope will hit the spot.
After the death of J.J. (Rudy Pankow) in the season-four ender, our Pogues are at their lowest . . . having lost not only their pal, but the Blue Crown to his murderer — J.J.’s own father, Chandler Groff J. Anthony Crane). What’s more, they’re on the verge of losing their homes, thanks to the scheming of the Kooks back in North Carolina.
As Tudum’s synopsis tantalizes: “It’s the Pogues against the world as they seek to avenge their best friend and bring it on home . . . one fina time.”

Tasked with unravelling the case is lead detective Thomas Berg (Jakob Oftebro), who — talented sleuth though he may be — finds himself at a loss. And s, Thomas must turn to the last person in the world he ever wanted to ask for help: his own father, retired cop Alfred Berg (Peter Andersson).
As Oftebro teased in a statement, this five-part series i “an intense, emotional journey. Thomas is a man who has dedicated his life to the police, but when the attacks start targeting his own world, he’s forced to confront not only a brutal killer, but also the complicated relationship with his father. Playing him was both challenging and incredibly rewarding — it’s a story about justice, loyalty and what happens when the past refuses to stay buried.”
Meanwhile, creator Kay mused: “At its heart, Blood Sacrific is a love story between an estranged father-andson duo, whose work draws them back together — all wrapped up inside a dark, adrenalized Scandi noir crime drama.”

Ride or Nighy!
Oscar nominee Bill Nighy talks channelling Charlie’s Angels in hit action-comedy series Ride or Die, and why darker projects often make for lighter sets
Q Speaking as someone who’s read a lot of scripts during your career, what was it exactly about Ride or Die that intrigued you?
A
I love the genre. I love comedy-action. And Tessa Coates, who wrote these scripts and produced the series, has done a brilliant job. And this is not PR . . . they’re just really superior. They’re properly funny, truly romantic — and the action is all flash-bang allop. It really motors along. I just thought it was really smart.
Q What can you say about your character, The Director? Is he someone who has a true sense of loyalty, or is he just using his operatives and associates as a means to an end — pretending to care about them?
A I think he presents himself as somebody whose only concern is usefulness. But as the story progresses, you will find tht it’s not quite that straightforward . . . and that he does struggle between the two. I don’t wanna give too much away — because it would be a spoiler — but there is a tension between those two elements . . .
The Director is someone with a very complicated past . . . and it’s quite surprising.
He’s also a bit like Charlie in Charlie’s Angels — only you get to meet him, obviously. He’s not just a voice on the phone. He is the boss, and he acts like the boss. He’s lethal and merciless. He is ruthlessly efficient, as ty say.
Q When you compare working on a really dark drama vs. a funny, actionoriented project like this, viewers mights assume the latter set would have a lighter sort of tone behind the scenes. But I’ve heard people say that the darker films and shows often have the lighter atmosphere almost as a release valve . . .
A That is absolutely true. I don’t think the genre or the tone of the piece necessarily informs the experience of being on set. You can do very grim, upsetting dramas where people do mess around in between takes — just because it kind of lightens the mood. Otherwise, it’s gruelling.
I remember trying to kill Hitler with Tom Cruise [in 2008’s Valkyrie]. This is not quite the same thing, but you put on a Nazi uniform and everybody, as soon as they put it on — including Tom Cruise — feels like they wanna do something disreputable in order to dishonour the uniform . . . to unplug the awfulness.
Also . . . I like being a vampire [in the Underworld films], here you’re supposed to be really, really spooky. Well, as soon as they say “Cut!” usually the crew fall apart — because it’s so ridiculous. When you’re hissing and biting people, it gets kind of funny, you know what I mean?
So, there isn’t really a correlation between the material and the mood. It depends on the people around and how everybody’s feeling.

YOUR WEEKLY SCOOP ON NEW TV PROJECTS IN THE WORKS
IT WAS ANNOUNCED more than a year ago — last November, to be exact — but FX’s live-action series adaptation of Far Cry seems to be taking shape.
For the uninitiated, Far Cry is one of the top-selling fist-person shooter video game franchises, known for its storytelling and unhinged villains. It was fist released in 2004, and fie more games (and numerous spinoffs) have followed since.
Sunny and Welcome to Wrexham, while Hawley is the creator of Fargo and Alien: Earth. As for Caplan, one of her two Emmy nominations was for the FX series Fleishman Is in Trouble.
But another Far Cry cast member is partnering with FX for the fist time: Steve Buscemi; Far Cry will be his fist FX series.
From Game to Series
FX’s Far Cry series is based on those video games and marks the fist live-action adaptation for TV — an important distinction, since it was previously adapted into a 2008 direct-to-video film, while Netflixs 2023 animated series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix is based on a standalone expansion of the third game in the franchise.
Lizzy Caplan — who will next be seen in Netflixs adaptation of the 1978 film The Boys from Brazil has now been tapped to star in the FX series opposite Rob Mac (formerly McElhenney of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia). Mac is also involved as co-creator and co-executive-producer alongside Noah Hawley (Fargo).
All three have worked with FX before: Mac is known for both
“What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology,” Hawley said in a statement last year. “Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme.
To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true.
I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.”
As for Mac, he stated the following: “Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized. Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”
Far Cry will air on FX and Hulu, and on Disney+ internationally.
Lizzy Caplan will be heading up the cast of Far Cry, an upcoming FX series based on a hugely popular video game.
DEVILISH CASTING
Three years after winning an Emmy for playing a member of the unscrupulous Roy family in Succession, Kieran Culkin is moving on to voicing the ultimate bad guy.
Family Guy has readied new Halloween and holiday specials that are heading to Disney+ later this year. It’s the third straight year that, like The Simpsons (also produced by Fox Television Animation), Family Guy has produced episodes exclusively for its streaming home, with Bob’s Burgers joining them this year for the first tim.
In the Halloween special, Brian and Stewie, both voiced by series creator Seth MacFarlane, find themselves in the underworld, where they must pay for 24 seasons worth of bad behaviour. As you’d expect things to go with those two, they end up in charge after annoying the Devil himself, voiced by Culkin.
Things are a little lighter in the holiday special titled “The Peter Clause.” When Peter (also voiced by MacFarlane) and the guys compete to become
TRUE CRIME HORROR STORY
Quahog’s official Santa, eter turns out to be anything but a gracious loser.
As for the new season (its 25th) of Family Guy the animated series will return in 2027 as part of Fox’s midseason schedule.
Meanwhile, SNL veterans Kenan Thompson and Vanessa Bayer have just been cast in Stewie, an upcoming spinoff focusing on the Griffin family’s youngest member.
“After getting the boot from his old preschool, Stewie is forced to enrol in a new one that’s not exactly top-of-the-line,” states the logline.
“It’s attended by a handful of kids he doesn’t know, and a 75-year-old class turtle with a half-cocked theory on just about every subject,” the logline continues. “Stewie’s miserable, the other kids are miserable, and even the turtle is miserable … until Stewie begins rolling out his trusty array of devices to take them anywhere in space and time, turning every boring day at school into an insane and surreal adventure.”
A star-studded limited series about the murder of JonBenét Ramsey is moving from Paramount+ to Netflix
Starring Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen as parents Patsy and John Ramsey, The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey had been greenlit by Paramount+ in 2024, before the merger with Skydance Media.
Filming wrapped in early 2025, and at the time, Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey (as it was then known) was destined to be the first instalment of an anthology series that would be based on high-profil, unsolved crimes.
And then it was shelved.
However, the twist is that the series hails from Yellowstone co-producer 101 Studios, which followed Taylor Sheridan to NBCUniversal earlier this year. 101
Studios then took the completed series and shopped it around, with Netflix — already a true-crime juggernaut — emerging victorious following months of negotiations. Now that it has locked down the series, Netflix is saving this one for premiere this winter, coinciding with the 30th anniversary (Dec. 25, 1996) of the shocking murder.
“The series focuses on one of the most infamous unsolved murder cases in American history, and the devastating personal and public reckoning that followed JonBenét Ramsey’s death,” reads the logline. “After a national media frenzy, nearly 30 years — and more than 21,016 tips, letters, and emails later — the killer has not been found.” JonBenét was just six at the time of her death.

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

A healthy dose of humour defines ne Canada-set coming-ofage drama
Sterling Point
Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin) with her adoptive father (Jay Duplass).
A GOOD COMING-OF-AGE STORY should make you feel nostalgic, whereas a great one will make you feel like you made a hilarious group of new friends. In Sterling Point, all the markers that you would expect from a Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage production are present. Like their previous series — The O.C. and Gossip Girl — characters on the cusp of adulthood are figuring out ho they are and what kind of people they would like to be. But it is Canadian series creator Megan Park that makes Sterling Point an often laughout-loud journey through the awkward trials of Gen Z.
The pilot episode, titled “But I Just Took an Ambien,” sees 17-year-old Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin) make her way to Muskoka from New York City (severely underestimating the distance between the two locations) in search of answers about her origins. She and her twin brother Connor (Keen Ruffalo) have been raised by their adoptive father Steven (Jay Duplass), who has shared limited information about their adoptive mother, who died young. Well, Annie is about to get answers aplenty to questions she didn’t even know she had.
Sterling Point
It is on Sterling Point, the Ontario-based island that she inherits from her estranged grandfather, that Annie’s life will change forever. “The real core of Annie’s story is that she is a girl who does not see herself as somebody who’s been defined y having lost her mother at a young age,” says Park. “It’s something that was very sad, but she didn’t feel like she knew her mom. So, it’s like, ‘How can I be sad about something I didn’t really know? I don’t know any other life.’ She realizes by the end of the show that it’s the thing that’s defined her lie the most.”
For the studious New Yorker, who has always been more of a deliberative creature, taking off on a him is just the beginning of her personal growth. “She makes the fist impulsive decision that she’s ever made

in her life and decides to just go and try to uncover something that’s clearly being hidden from her,” explains Rubin. “Once she gets there, she kind of stumbles into this massive life change and found friendships, love and sisterhood. Annie is someone who really uses outside accomplishments and external achievements to stifle the uncomfortable questions that have always been knocking on her door. Over the course of the show, she lets go of the fear that has kept her from asking those questions.”
One of the show’s biggest shockers arrives early on, when Annie comes face to face with 16-year-old Ramona (Amelie Hoeferle) — the spitting image of her mother. “Ramona is her sister,” reveals Park. “And although Ramona sees this conversation about nature versus nurture in a different way, ultimately they are both connected by this woman who was so
obviously important in both of their lives. They both see her as a very different person and knew her and feel her in themselves in different ways. It’s about them discovering who their mother really was, together.”
No YA drama would be complete without a love triangle, and Annie soon finds herself torn between local teen Ellis (Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie) and NYC buddy Rory (Daniel Quinn-Toye) who summers in Muskoka. “Ellis is a very, very quiet guy, who is kind of the nature boy of the show,” says Whiteduck-Lavoie. “Ellis didn’t have a lot of city friends growing up, so Annie’s vibe and the whole New York thing that comes with it — obviously he falls in love instantly.” Rory on the other hand is no stranger to city life. “What’s so interesting about the dynamic in the love triangle is that it’s not just picking between two boys, it’s two ways of life and two socioeconomic

backgrounds,” says Quinn-Toye. “It’s quite complex and speaks to the nuance of the show, and how unique it is.”
While many of the show’s premises are profound, the cast of characters makes going through the hard stuff all the moe amusing.
“Megan does an incredible job of balancing light and dark in the series,” says Rubin.
“There’s a lot of sadness, there’s a lot of grief, there’s a lot of anger. And, at the same time, it’s really funny. The characters are really fun people, and a lot of them are really funny, accidentally.” One of the often-accidentally funny characters is Annie’s twin brother Connor. “He’s snarky and a little bit mean but as he’s on the island more and more, we see him drop that mask that I think he uses to protect himself,” says Ruffalo, who praises Park for balancing hilarity and emotion, while still letting the cast play with the words.
“What really caught me off guad was the amount of faith that she put in us to really have fun with them and let us find them o
our own,” he says. “That blew me away.”
For Park, it was important that the chemistry that was so evident between the cast members would get to shine through.
“The ultimate goal with everything I make is that I want it to feel like you’re just dipping into someone’s real life and you’re right in the middle of it. I think a lot of that comes down to the atmosphere you create on set so that you can feel it on camera,” she says.
“That was the North Star from the writers’ room to being on set to the edit.” Hoeferle adds that there is something so authentic and relatable about the world Park has created. “Megan writes so realistically and so naturally,” she says. “I think a part of her letting a story be so human is that it leaves room for human error – and human error is funny. You can so easily see yourself in it. So then, are you laughing at the show? Are you laughing at yourself? Are you laughing at something that’s just innately human? She does that so well.”
Connor (Keen Ruffalo) is Annie’s twin brother.

Rookie Green Lantern John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and grizzled veteran Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler).
Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre star in Lanterns, a neo-western with a superhero twist JOHN JOHNSON/HBO
SERIES PREMIERE
IN THE ANNALS of comic book superheroes, there’s definitely a hierarchy. Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, Iron Man and their ilk tend to rise to the top. Meanwhile, there are others that are considered lower-tier, a description that certainly applies to Green Lantern.
Interestingly, the character’s origin dates back to the 1940s, an ordinary mortal imbued with incomprehensible powers by placing an otherworldly ring on a finer. In the character’s later iteration, the hero was human Hal Jordan, who became part of an extraterrestrial crime-fihting organization as one of numerous Green Lanterns spread throughout various galaxies. Over the years, the Green Lantern mythology

has grown more expansive — and more convoluted. The character’s popularity was done no favours by the 2011 Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds, which proved to be a commercial disaster hated equally by critics and comic book fans.
Enter Lanterns, a new HBO series set within the Green Lantern mythology that is more of a neowestern than a superhero series.
“The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery with cosmic ties as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” reads the logline for the series, which also stars Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Jasmine Cephas Jones and Nathan Fillion
As viewers will see, the pairing of the laconic former Friday Night Lights star with British thespian Pierre yields a classic mismatched-partner vibe familiar from buddy movies of the 1980s.
“They brought together a fellow from rural Texas and a fellow from South London,” Pierre explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “and they made magic with that.”
The series’ storyline unfolds across two timelines. In 2016, John — who is just two months into his Green Lantern training — joins Hal
to investigate a shooting in a small Nebraska town that might have an alien connection. Meanwhile, flash forwards to 2026 hint at mysterious events that will be revealed as the series progresses.
For Pierre, getting a handle on his character involved moving past John’s superpowers and focusing on his humanity.
“The fist places that I dived into were the parts of him that are arguably not directly related to his superhero-ness,” Pierre told EW “Who was the boy who turned into the adolescent, who turned into the young man, and then the more mature man that we get to know later in the series?”
Chandler found his way into Hal by zeroing in on his relationship with Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen), his former mentor who is now an outcast after staging a failed coup against the Green Lantern Corp.
“It was really interesting, because you’re getting into all kinds of different weeds of what goes on in their relationship in the past,” Chandler explained, “a lot of which, for myself, is very personal. I created little things for myself with him that created a relationship that was very intimate and intense.”
Both actors knew that Lanterns was going to work at the fist table read, which marked the beginning of a tight bond between the actors that extends beyond the screen.
“Aaron’s got this great way of giving me this look — and he could if he wanted to — like he wanted to break my neck,” Chandler said. “We were in the car one day and I said something about wisdom, I think. And this was pivotal: Aaron shot back, he goes, ‘Yeah, but you’re old.’ Now I’m good at giving it, but I can take it. When he said that old thing, it was my turn to give him that look. That was a dynamic that we ran with: wisdom versus age.”
We both find a lot of joy in not knowing exactly where the scene is gonna go. We’ll never do anything that will derail the scene. We’ll never do anything that will change the storyline. We’ll always get from point A to point B successfully, but how we get there, you never know,”
That give-and-take is evident throughout Lanterns, a loose spontaneity that permeates their characters’ relationship. “We both find a lot of joy in not knowing exactly where the scene is gonna go. We’ll never do anything that will derail the scene. We’ll never do anything that will change the storyline. We’ll always get from point
A to point B successfully, but how we get there, you never know,” said Pierre, while his co-star compares their characters to an iconic comedy team.
“Abbott would never let Costello hit the ground and Costello would never let Abbott hit the ground,” Chandler added, “but they let him get real close.”

TED TALKS
Jason Sudeikis reveals why he decided to revive TED LASSO
WWHEN TED LASSO aired what appeared to be its series finale in 202, its creator Jason Sudeikis truly believed he was done with the American coach’s soccer journey. Then thoughts of more Ted Lasso started to percolate. But was it just a feeling of longing, or was there really more story to tell? The answer required not just individual deliberation but some Lasso-like teamwork. “It was filling y own cup worth of ideas — probably a 32-ounce cup — then seeing the other people we were lucky enough to make this show with: Brendan [Hunt], our buddy co-creator Joe [Kelly], our writing staff, and speaking with them before anything was decided,” says Sudeikis. “To kick the tires on it and see if this enthusiasm that I was feeling bubbling inside me was rippling out into other areas. And it was.”
It was well known that those involved with the heartfelt series — which had given viewers around the world an emotional anchor in the pandemic and beyond — were eager to reunite. But rebooting just to reboot was not something Sudeikis was interested in. And not all ideas were great reasons to put the band back together. “One that I remember kicking around, because it was very easy to picture, was, ‘What if Ted is coaching a team in America?’ And we briefly taled about, ‘Does Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) buy Sporting KC? Does Rebecca buy LAFC?’ It didn’t go very far,” says Hunt, who along with co-creating the series stars as Coach Beard. “But it was easy to picture — especially the part about not having to get on a 13-hour fliht to go to work.”
The idea for Ted to return to A.F.C. Richmond to coach a professional women’s soccer team ultimately won out. “The cool thing about this was we were going back to a similar location, but we had fresh blood,” says Sudeikis. “There was re-establishing the world, but also world-building with these new characters. We had to go back to our mindset from season one, when we were thinking up Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), Jamie Tart (Phil Dunster) and Nate the Great (Nick Mohammed). And that was fun because it made it fresh again.”
It also provided the coaches with an unfamiliar challenge. “It certainly puts them behind the eight ball, as the saying goes,” says Sudeikis. “We got to meet a professor from USC and she had found, when trying to distill
Ted Lasso WEDNESDAY,
Brendan Hunt and Jason Sudeikis return as Coach Beard and Ted Lasso, with new cast member Tanya Reynolds as assistant coach Alice Chilton.
The cool thing about this was we were going back to a similar location, but we had fresh blood. There was re-establishing the world, but also world-building with these new characters . . . and that was fun because it made it fresh again.”
what the difference is between [men and women soccer athletes], that often with men’s teams, if you tell them to jump, they’ll say, ‘How high?’ And with women’s teams, if you say jump, they’ll say, ‘Why?’ and then you have to give them an answer. It’s those kinds of handles that you can hold onto and both move towards and then choose to move away from to shape the season.”
The fourth installment of the series indeed introduces a new group of players, helmed by less-than-cheerful assistant coach Alice Chilton (Tanya Reynolds). For the Other Bennet Sister actor, stepping onto set alongside these long-time colleagues was exactly what one would hope for on a show like Ted Lasso. “I came and met everyone on my fist day on set, and it really did feel like stepping into an already established family,” says Reynolds. “Everyone knew each other and everyone was really excited to be back. It was lovely.” Onscreen, however, the frosty coach’s encounters with Ted and Beard are a touch less charming. “To play the polar opposite of Ted is delicious,” says Reynolds. “There’s so much room for fun in that, and fun was what we had. It’s hard to not laugh all the time — because I wanted to laugh all the time — and Alice is not a laugher. I think she’s laughed maybe four times in her life.”
It is a given, of course, that the new season of Ted Lasso serves some nostalgia. From the moment Rebecca, Higgins (Jeremy Swift) and Keeley (Juno Temple) step onto the screen, even the most casual fans will feel their hearts flutte. “Last night was my fist time watching it and actually getting to experience it and feel the nostalgia in person, in a room with that many people, said it all. Everybody left that room feeling
The gang ambushes Ted in Kansas City to lure him back (L-R): Jeremy Swift, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple and Jason Sudeikis.
so optimistic about being alive,” says Temple. “I would say serving that again was something that was imperative.” Yet the writers make sure that even the established cast has new problems to tackle. Rebecca, for example, fihts some unconscious bias, as the new owner of a women’s soccer team. “It’s very cleverly done because if I think about it, we are all, as a society of women, brought up with the fact that men reign supreme,” says Waddingham. “You have Rebecca thinking she’s a feminist, but actually not very much of her is. She really has to question herself, and the fact that she’s called out by someone like Alice is absolute genius.”
How audiences ultimately will feel about the merging of the old and the new is something that Sudeikis recognizes is out of his hands. His career track, however, has shown him pushback is inevitable. “[On Saturday Night Live] people have disliked the new people since the very fist cast. They didn’t like Bill Murray after Chevy Chase left, which we forget. They didn’t like my generation after Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon left,” he says. “But you got to do it — the show must go on. And doing the old and the new is fun. I mean, we’ve always delighted in putting little touches and little homages — I would call it shopping from your own closet — and we have plenty of those. But we know that’s not what a show makes. Finding new in the old and finding familiarity in the new was a very joyful process. It kept you engaged. It’s like that workout exercise where they make you stand on something unsteady and lift weights so that your whole body and mind are activated. It felt like that at all times — it still feels like that.”
Finding new in the old and finding amiliarity in the new was a very joyful process. It kept you engaged.”
Ted (Jason Sudeikis) hears the pitch from Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) that brings about his return to Richmond.

Their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognizable surroundings. “A few years ago, I was walking through our neighbourhood in Michigan, just walking down the street, and I was passing by this garage [with a] chain link fence and garbage cans,” director David Robert Mitchell told Entertainment Weekly of how he came up with the idea for the movie. “And I was struck by the image of, like, ‘It’d be really interesting if there was a dinosaur right there.’”

A LAST WORD THE
Q You’ve been very open about your religion and the role it plays in your day-to-day. Do you have a particular Bible verse or a daily habit you draw upon when things get tough — out in the wild, or just in life?
A First of all, one of the reasons I’ve done this show, Chosen in the Wild, is that faith has been a beautiful, empowering part of my life for many years. I’ve learned through many experiences — many jungles, deserts, mountains — that we all need something, you know? And my Christian faith has been a real backbone and help through many of those moments . . . and every day.
My faith isn’t particularly religious or “churchy.” I try and keep it simple. I try and start the day on my knees — say, “Sorry,” say, “Thank you” and say, “Help for the day ahead” — then crack on and get on with it. That’s how I see it. I see so much of my spirituality in connection with good people and friends and the outdoors and nature. I feel the light of the Almighty in all those things.
I like that cartoon I once saw of a building and two kids holding hands next to it — and the arrow says
Bear Grylls
“Church” over the kids and then “Building” [over] the church. I kind of see spirituality and faith like that — in each other, in the Almighty, and help for the day ahead.
Q In addition to shepherding celebrities through the wilderness on these shows, you also end up having some quite intimate conversations with them. That in mind, were there any surprising revelations during your time with the folks from The Chosen?
A Well, I think all of the cast on The Chosen . . . out of all the different shows I’ve done, they were especially out of their comfort zone. They’re all rookies in terms of that. And
My faith isn’t particularly religious or ‘churchy.’

we went to some wild places — Canyonlands and Colorado River and the Adirondacks and forests.
But, even though they were nervous, they all had their hearts on their sleeves, and they had such incredible stories about how this show, The Chosen, has changed their life. I didn’t expect that level of emotion from them.
The Chosen in the Wild With Bear Grylls
PRIME VIDEO
You know, Running Wild, my day job . . . it’s on Fox, which is great, and I love it, and you hear from all these stars about their movie roles and all of that chatter as we go along . . . but this is different. This role, for these actors, has really impacted their lives. Not always great — some of it’s been a real battle. You know, you’ve got so many fans around the world — something like 300 million viewers of The Chosen — and yet, they don’t actually tend to know the actors as people very well. And I think this has just been a beautiful way of getting to know these actors and hearing their stories. That was a great privilege.
QA big part of your job across all of these versions of the Wild format has been to push people out of their comfort zones. How do you figure out the xact right way to approach that?
A I think that’s called the wisdom of life, isn’t it? Sensitivity and just experience, as well. You get a feel very quickly for where people are at. Both on Running Wild and Chosen in the Wild . . . I’m not trying to “break” anyone. Like, the wild does that. We’re there to journey side-by-side. I consider I’m just nudging people
gently along, and standing beside them and helping them as best I can. But it’s a journey and never a competition. Help them shine, ultimately, is what I want to do.
I love that dynamic. It brings out the best in people. And then the wild can do its job for me — which opens them up and encourages them to talk honestly about their lives. That’s how I look at it.
Q Do you ever reflect on those early seasons of Running Wild and think, “I didn’t really know yet the best way to nudge these people out of that comfort zone?”
A Yeah, totally. Actually, I haven’t been asked that before and it’s so true, looking back. I way pushed too hard sometimes.
It’s a bit like that analogy of the wind and the sun trying to have a competition — who can get the man to take his coat off. The wind blows hard — and the harder the wind blows, the tighter the man holds onto the coat. The sun goes, “I’ll show you how to do it,” and just gently shines. And the man sits down, gets at his sandwiches and takes his coat off. So much of life is in that. Sometimes, the harder you try and push people . . . it’s not the way. Just, gently . . .
CURRENT GIG
For his latest star-studded excursion into the Wild, English adventurer Bear Grylls serves as sherpa to the talent behind biblical sleeper hit The Chosen. That includes creator Dallas Jenkins and cast members Jonathan Roumie (Jesus), Paras Patel (Matthew), Elizabeth Tabish (Mary Magdalene), Noah James (Andrew) and Luke Dimyan (Judas).
Across six episodes, they traverse the most gorgeous-yet-treacherous expanses that Utah has to offer — including Castle alley, Canyonlands, the Ausable River, the Colorado River, the Great Basin Desert and the Adirondack Forest.
Amidst all the death-defying acts of survivalism, Bear et al. also have profound chats about life, fame and faith.
And the other thing is, standing beside people — doing it [along with them] and sharing that: “I’m finding this had. This is hard. This is scary.” You know, “This is scary” is OK — and quite reassuring. And [the old saying,] “Softly, softly always catches a monkey” . . . that is true.
QIn one of the episodes with Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus, you asked him a question that also applies to you. You’ve starred in so many shows and you’ve been all around the world, had so much success . . . how do you stay grounded, when it would be very easy to become unmoored?
A I think family really helps. You know, I really look at my job as my job. I don’t look at it as an identity. To be honest, my family don’t watch a lot of the shows. They
MEMORABLE ROLES
A ubiquitous presence across the TV landscape for the past two decades, Bear Grylls has made a name for himself on both sides of the pond via survival series that plunge him into nature’s harshest locales, with nothing but his wits, gumption and a celebrity or two to get through it. His breakout was Man vs. Wild, which ran from 2006 to 2011 on Discovery, and mostly featured Bear braving the elements alone — save for some special eps featuring the likes of Will Ferrell and Jake Gyllenhaal. Those special instalments ultimately set the stage for his true claim to fame, Running Wild. Jumping between NBC, National Geographic and, currently, Fox from 2014 to present-day, the show has changed not only networks, but titles — yet all feature the common premise of Grylls taking a walk on the Wild side with Hollywood A-listers Kate Winslet, Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, Ben Stiller, Natalie Portman and oh-so-many more. The man has also starred in/hosted myriad other, similarly themed series over the years, including WorstCase Scenario, The Island, World’s Toughest Race: EcoChallenge Fiji and, bringing things full-circle career-wise, Netflixs choose-your-own-adventure You vs. Wild.
used to in the early days . . . but really, they don’t. I’m just a regular guy. I’m a dad and a husband. I have a few sort of “niche skills,” as they would call it, that are probably not very applicable to everyday life . . . unless everything’s gone wrong [laughs]. So, I keep it as, “That’s my job.”
And I love that. I go work hard [with a] great team, and then we come back into normal life. I also feel really grateful that I have a job that I love — I never take that for granted. But, yeah, family always are grounding things.
And faith is part of that journey, as well. What do they say? “Being humble isn’t thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking about yourself less.” I always liked that. It’s not like you’re rubbish; it’s just [taking] the focus off ourself for a second. The danger of TV is you end up talking about yourself, and it’s not real life; it’s just a blip . . . the real life happens afterwards.
QAs much as you’ve always played the role of the guide during these TV adventures over the years, do you also find yourself gleaning wisdom from the people you’re guiding?
AYeah, that’s true. You’re always learning from each other.
I mean, that’s the great thing about the wild as well, is that there is no manual completion point of: “You’ve done it.” I actually feel now I almost know less than when I started. It’s such a big manual, the outdoors. Our team has actually got smaller over the years, and we depend on each other more and more. But, you know what? It’s like we share and show that dynamic more and more in the shows — “We’re a team, we’re in this together.” Sometimes you have to improvise and adapt the journey and shorten it . . .
And we’re always learning, always innovating — always failing, as well. That’s the other thing. Always getting things wrong. Like, “Oops!” And you figue it out.
Like I say, the wild’s very humbling. Life is very humbling. That’s the journey. And I’ve learned long ago, embrace all of that.

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
