syndicate that named their horses after well known sporting identities. Their first two horses, bought as yearlings, were the smart pair Boom Boom Becker and Em Maguane. Boom Boom Becker showed a lot of promise including starting second favorite in the 2007 APG final, but after an all too brief career of five wins from 14 starts, he was retired in May 2009. With 20 members all wanting a say, the Royal Flush syndicate also broke down. “The sydicate no longer exists, because for whatever reason everyone went their own way. Too many opinions, too many hard heads if you like,” Cendron

explained. But Cendron was keen to maintain his interest and with a few surviving members from the Royal Flush days, he now races three horses. Other than Bus To Harland, they still have Em Maguane and the rising star Sushi Sushi. As you may have guessed Sushi Sushi wasn’t named after any prominent sporting star. Cendron recalls the circumstances that led to her “unusual” name. “We were sitting around discussing a possible name when a cousin of mine suggested we should name the horse Sushi. “I didn’t take much notice at first,

but to cut a long story short, when we were putting the names down for the horse we, put it in at about eight or nine. But there was a mix up with the naming, so we had to have a second crack at it and we started thinking ‘Sushi Sushi’ and the rest of history.” On the same day that Bus To Harland won at Melton, Sushi Sushi took his record to 10 wins from 18 starts when he strolled home in a Cranbourne night meeting, paying just 1.04. And when they are that good, any name sounds okay, or as Cendron believes, “It is the best name I have ever come across for a racehorse.” “We have certainly had the sweet taste of success.”, Cendron admitted, well aware of how lucky he and his friends have been to get their hands on such a good string of horses in such a short period of time. “We were just a group of punters sitting around having a few bets and decided it was time to buy a horse. I got involved with a few mates at the sales and it has just got better and better.” But as much as he thinks they have been lucky, Cendron also heaps praise on trainer Freddy Taiba. “Freddie has been a long time friend of ours. We got to meet him through the harness world. He does a great job picking out the right races and foreseeing long term plans for the horses.

“They have taken us on a good journey. As well as doing New Zealand, we have been to all the APGs when our horses have been racing. “Boom Boom Becker at Harold Park was the first year, the second year was when Bus To Harland won it, we went to Queensland to watch Jorg Is Best and Jar Zinyo plus a trip to Menangle to watch Sushi Sushi last year. “It’s most certainly better than watching from the TAB.”
