Lotto NRFL 2015 Welcome Anzac weekend brought the second double header of the Lotto NRFL season and the results had a significant impact on the upper echelons of each table. Hamilton Wanderers took a two-point advantage at the top of the Premier League while Glenfield Rovers jumped to second spot. There was only one game in the Women’s Premier with most of the teams tied up in the ASB Women’s Knockout Cup competition. Glenfield travelled to Hamilton to take on Claudelands Rovers but returned with nothing after a goal from Football Ferns striker Helen Collins secured the points for the hosts. In Division One, Ellerslie relinquished top spot to North Shore United and are now fourth behind Shore, Tauranga City United and Forrest Hill-Milford United, the latter of whom play each other this weekend. Manukau City moved to the top of Division Two while it was a bad weekend for previous leaders North Force, who slipped to fifth after suffering a pair of losses. Oratia United pocketed a six-point haul to lift themselves to second as the goals of golden boot pace-setter Mark Withers continue to fuel their title charge. In the programme this week we preview the Round 8 action in each division and feature photos from Phototek of the thrilling 3-3 draw between Takapuna and Mangere United in Division One, as well as Oratia’s come-from-behind 3-2 win over Claudelands in Division Two. Our Lotto NRFL social media platforms continue to be the place to go for all score updates, results, goal details and other news – remember to tag us @ LottoNRFL with your updates from the sideline! Good luck for your game!

Round 8

East Coast Bays vs Waitakere City Bay City Park | Saturday 2 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Glenn Lochrie, Assistant Referees: Greg Woo, Steven Black Waitakere endured a miserable Anzac weekend and have now recorded just one win from their opening seven games. East Coast Bays have posted an identical record but had a bit more joy over the double header, recording a vital 2-0 win against fellow strugglers Melville on Monday. They will be confident of building on that here against a Waitakere side shipping goals at an alarming rate.

vs

Eastern Suburbs vs Three Kings United Madills Farm | Saturday 2 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Cory Mills, Assistant Referees: John McCoskrie, Rajesh Kumar The hosts will be in great spirits after pocketing six points over the long weekend, including one of the results of the season so far in beating heavyweights Birkenhead on their own patch. They are now fourth on the table, having played one game less than all their rivals – an excellent return for a newly-promoted side. This will be a tight one though as Three Kings are just two points further back.

vs

Glenfield Rovers vs Melville United McFetridge Park | Saturday 2 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Campbell-Kirk Waugh, Assistant Referees: James Ashford, Eric Yu Any hopes Melville had of using the double header to haul themselves out of trouble failed to materialise as they fell to another pair of losses and they are now still desperately searching for their first points. A visit to the defending champions does not seem to offer great promise of this search coming to an end however with Rovers looking to keep the pressure on leaders Hamilton.

vs

Bay Olympic vs Western Springs Olympic Park | Saturday 2 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Kerr, Assistant Referees: Chris Wolken, Mazhar Batoor Bay Olympic emerged from Anzac weekend in good shape after earning an excellent pair of results, 4-3 at home to Central and 3-2 away at Three Kings. Despite the wins though, Carl Jorgensen will be concerned at the number of goals being conceded – the Bay now have the worst defensive record in the top half by some margin. Springs will look to capitalise on this as they chase their first win.

vs

Central United vs Onehunga Sports Kiwitea Street | Sunday 3 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Martin Neale, Assistant Referees: Allan Wilson, Hayden Tutbury This is a key fixture for both sides as they are each in mid-table and looking to string some results together to launch a push for the top four. Recent history suggests this will be a tightly-fought encounter as both games last season were decided by a single goal. Onehunga emerged victorious on each of those occasions so Central will be keen to exact some revenge this time around.

vs

Hamilton Wanderers vs Birkenhead United Porritt Stadium | Sunday 3 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Owens, Assistant Referees: Darren House, Sean Coon This is the highlight of the round and, with the match taking place on Sunday, the action is likely to be keenly followed on social media by the other sides with title hopes. Birkenhead finished just a point ahead of Wanderers last season in pipping them to second but the tables appear to have turned so far in this campaign with the Hamiltonians leading the way in first place.

Round 8

Forrest Hill Milford vs Claudelands Rovers Becroft Park | Sunday 3 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Jeremy Ferguson, Assistant Referees: Anthony Barnes, Rhys Kimber

vs

Claudelands took part in the only Women’s Premier game last weekend – the other fixtures were all postponed due to the ASB Women’s Knockout Cup – and used it to secure a very significant victory, 1-0 over Glenfield. Having already seen off a challenge from one of their title rivals, they are now faced with another as they travel to the defending champions, who will be well rested after their weekend off.

Norwest United vs Glenfield Rovers Huapai Reserve | Sunday 3 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Eric Yu, Assistant Referees: Free Diao, Charlie Tseng It’s hard to tell whether this is a good or bad time for Norwest to be facing Glenfield. On the one hand, Rovers would appear vulnerable at the moment after their loss last weekend but, on the other, the visitors will be determined to get back on track and Norwest could therefore be on the receiving end of a backlash. Glenfield’s Katie Rood and Belinda van Noorden will be eyeing up this game as a chance to boost their goal tallies.

vs

Lynn Avon United vs Three Kings United Ken Maunder Park | Sunday 3 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Mazhar Batoor, Assistant Referees: Kieran Withers, Greg Woo These are two of the traditional heavyweights of the women’s game in the Auckland region but neither has claimed a title within the last five years. Of the two, Three Kings appear to have a much better chance of doing something about that and a win here could see them go top. The two Hannahs, Robert and Wall, have ten goals between them for Three Kings and shutting them down will be a key part of Lynn-Avon’s game plan.

vs

Eastern Suburbs vs Fencibles United Madills Farm | Sunday 3 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Wendy McNeely, Assistant Referees: Jay Fu, Charles Nothnagel This battle of the east features a pair of sides both in need of another victory after recording just one win each so far. Both will approach the match with confidence though after notching morale-boosting wins in the cup last weekend with identical 7-0 scorelines over local league opposition. Football Ferns pair Betsy Hassett and Rosie White each scored hat-tricks for Fencibles and coach Angela Wallbank is keeping her fingers crossed that they will be available for this weekend.

vs

Western Springs vs Papatoetoe Seddon Fields | Sunday 3 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Johanna O’Connor, Assistant Referees: Chris Casey, Dave Doidge

vs

It’s a quirk of the draw that these teams are meeting each other in this round as they have just crossed swords in the cup, Springs completely outclassing the south Aucklanders to the tune of 7-0. Given they were so dominant just a few days ago, anything less than a convincing win for the hosts would be a surprise, especially as Papatoetoe have won just one match (not including their retrospective awarding of the points in the opening round loss to Eastern Suburbs)

Round 8

Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Ellerslie AFC Anderson Park | Friday 1 May | Kick-off: 7pm | Referee: Mark Fisher, Assistant Referees: John McCoskrie, Khalid El Gana Mt Albert coach Nick Snedden will be breathing a bit easier after picking up some much-needed points in an undefeated Anzac weekend, including a crucial 4-2 win at Waiuku. Tim Hayhow pulls most of the strings going forward and he came to life over the long weekend, scoring three goals. In contrast, Ellerslie took just one point so the hosts will feel they have a chance of an upset here.

vs

Manurewa vs Metro Memorial Park | Saturday 2 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Owens, Assistant Referees: Mark Fleming, Bruce McGrath Along with Ngaruawahia, Manurewa are now in danger of being cut adrift at the foot of the table. The double header failed to yield any points and Monday’s 5-0 thumping at Forrest Hill could not have come at a worse time. An away win would therefore appear the most likely outcome but Metro’s confidence will not be high after letting Mangere put seven past them.

vs

Hibiscus Coast vs Takapuna Stanmore Bay Park | Saturday 2 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Anna-Marie Keighley, Assistant Referees: Sarah Walker, Richard Middleton The division’s only northern derby on Saturday brings together a pair of sides sharing promotion-chasing ambitions but approaching the match in contrasting moods. While North Shore went on the goal rampage last week against Mt Albert, the Coasters were thumped by Waiuku in a result that has put a dampener on their otherwise promising start to the season.

vs

Tauranga City United vs Forrest Hill Milford Links Ave | Sunday 3 May | Kick-off: 2.30pm | Referee: Bruce Horrox, Assistant Referees: Brett Willis, Andrew Lamberth This is the match most deserving of top billing in Division One this weekend as it features two of the sides most likely to be in the mix for the title. Both are among the highest scorers in the league with a Tauranga strike force that includes Jerahl Hughes, Colm Kenny and Andrew Cooper particularly potent. Forrest Hill will need to defend well to take anything back north with them.

vs

North Shore United vs Ngaruawahia AFC Allen Hill Stadium | Sunday 3 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: James Ashford, Assistant Referees: Torres Chang, Steve Merriman On paper, there would appear to be only one winner here with North Shore flying at the top of the table and Ngaruawahia still without a win. Shore coach Paul Temple will be delighted with the way his charges are performing as they are second on the goal-scoring charts and also have the meanest defence, having conceded just five goals in seven matches.

vs

Mangere United vs Waiuku AFC Centre Park | Sunday 3 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Paul Shakes, Assistant Referees: Thomas Lee, Greg White Taking in a Mangere match continues to be well worth the effort as they are making a habit of being involved in thrillers and remarkably high-scoring encounters. Two more such affairs were added to the ever-growing list over Anzac weekend with a 3-3 draw at Takapuna followed up by a 7-1 dismissal of Metro. If they can get things right at the back as well then Waiuku will be up against it.

Round 8

Claudelands Rovers vs Te Atatu Galloway Park | Saturday 2 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Carl Watkins, Assistant Referees: Matt Norton, Hubert Bakx Te Atatu emerged as one of the surprise packages of the Anzac weekend action with two wins, one of which was an impressive 7-2 success over Onehunga Mangere. Harry Gage and the experienced Danny Eisenhut are both in good scoring form while Lome Funafuti struck a hat-trick in Monday’s win – his first goals since the opening day. Josh Groom is the main man for Claudelands at the moment after his three goals over the double header.

vs

Lynn Avon United vs Papakura City Ken Maunder Park | Saturday 2 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Hayden Tutbury, Assistant Referees: Neil Tobin, Chris Scott Lynn-Avon remain the league’s only side without a win and must turn around their form quickly as they are currently on a collision course with the drop. Papakura have their sights set on the other end of the table so an away win would be the safest bet here but, given Lynn-Avon nearly earned a point against leaders Manukau on Monday, the hosts are likely to make life difficult for City.

vs

Onehunga Mangere United vs Manukau City Mangere Domain | Saturday 2 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Allan Wilson, Assistant Referees: Rene Vaughan, Pat Barrett Manukau’s dream start to their NRFL return shows no signs of coming to an end and they will be confident of continuing their undefeated ways in this southern derby. Onehunga Mangere went from heroes to zeroes over Anzac weekend, putting six past Papakura before crumbling themselves two days later, slumping to a 7-2 loss against Te Atatu. William Batts scored four against Papakura and is likely to be targeted for special treatment by the Manukau defence

vs

Papatoetoe vs Fencibles United Murdoch Park | Saturday 2 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Jeremy Ferguson, Assistant Referees: Morgan Breuer, Gordon Lee

vs

Fencibles’ title credentials were called into question on Saturday in being beaten by fellow contenders Manukau but they provided the ideal response by sweeping aside Albany 5-0 in their next outing. Papatoetoe have lost three of their last four matches and are only being kept off the bottom by Lynn-Avon so the chances of an upset appear slim.

Albany United vs AFC Fury Rosedale Park | Saturday 2 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Vaughan Couillault, Assistant Referees: Charlie Tseng, Robin van Niekerk

vs

A lengthy trek north would usually not be welcomed by the Fury players. But they will be happier than usual to face this one as they proved on Monday they are capable of shaking off the effects of travel with a 3-1 at North Force. They will also feel Albany are there for the taking after suffering a 5-0 humbling at the hands of Fencibles.

North Force vs Oratia United Kamo Sports Park | Sunday 3 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Neil Tobin, Assistant Referees: Allan Tobin, Aiden Moffatt North Force went into the long weekend looking to consolidate their position at the top of the ladder but things didn’t exactly go to plan with consecutive losses to Albany and Fury – both sides they would have expected to beat. They must now try to get back on track against in-form Oratia, who have not been beaten since round one
