JODY VENDER Bien vivre tra finanza e cavalli

La passione per il cavallo lo ha folgorato da adulto.

“La più bella immagine che ho in mente quando penso al lungo periodo che ho passato coltivando la passione per i concorsi ippici è legato al circolo che ho frequentato per vent’anni, alle porte di Milano, e a chi lo ha fatto grande con la sua presenza costante: Castellazzo e il cavalier Graziano Mancinelli. Per essere in ufficio per tempo montavo quando appena aveva albeggiato e in maneggio con me c’era sempre solo lui. Per uno strano effetto di luce nella penombra sembrava che il cavallo non avesse nessuno in sella.”

Jody Vender è un elegante signore lombardo che non dimostra affatto i suoi settant’anni da poco compiuti e che nel mondo della finanza è molto di più che un semplice vip. Laureato negli anni ‘70 in Bocconi dove è rimasto come docente fino al 2005, in Università si è occupato prevalentemente di finanza delle Piccole Medie Imprese e in particolare di Venture Capital e Private Equity. Nel suo campo ha sempre avuto il doppio cappello di studioso-docente e di operatore professionale. Ha scritto alcuni libri di taglio accademico e pubblicato nel tempo alcuni articoli su Il Sole 24 Ore e sul Corriere della Sera.

La passione per il cavallo lo ha folgorato da adulto. “Da quando ero piccolo passavo le vacanze a St.Moritz nella casa di famiglia. Non mi sono mai divertito il dovuto perché non potevo sciare per un problema di salute né fare molti altri sport. È stato lì che all’età di trentasette anni ho cominciato a frequentare il maneggio. La cosa mi ha subito molto coinvolto. Pensando a come fare al rientro a Milano ne ho parlato con mio cugino Emanuele Castellini il quale mi ha indirizzato al Circolo Ippico di Castellazzo dove mi sono subito iscritto dopo le prammatiche presentazioni al cavalier Mancinelli e a sua moglie Nelly.”

Il passaggio da un club ippico per turisti ad un centro di eccellenza come Castellazzo non è stato certamente indolore per Jody Vender che ha saputo però prestissimo adattarsi. “Il primo problema è stato il mio cavallo. Ne avevo comprato uno in Svizzera, senza pormi troppi problemi e lo ritenevo più che degno per le mie esigenze. Quando è arrivato il van erano tutti riuniti per vederlo. Non appena è sceso dalla rampa Mancinelli mi ha guardato con aria schifata e mi ha detto “Caro Vender, lo butti subito”. Si è girato e se ne è andato. Come inizio niente male ma aveva ragione perché io non mi ero neanche accorto che era nevrotomizzato. O meglio non sapevo neanche cosa volesse dire.”

“The most wonderful image that comes to my mind when I think back to the many years I spent cultivating my passion for show jumping, is linked to the riding club close to Milan where I was a member of for twenty years and to the rider who made it great with his constant presence: Castellazzo and Graziano Mancinelli. So as to get to the office in time I would ride just after sunrise and he was always the only other rider in the indoor school. Due to a strange effect caused by the light in the semidarkness it always looked as if his horse was riderless.” Jody Vender is an elegant gentleman from Lombardy who recently turned seventy, looking a lot younger than his age, and who is a great deal more than just a VIP in the world of finance. Having graduated from the Bocconi in the Seventies, staying on as a professor until 2005, at university he mainly addressed the subjects of finance in SMEs and more in particular Venture Capital and Private Equity. In his field of expertise, he has always been both a scholar-professor and a professional operator and has written a number of academic books and published various articles in the daily newspapers Il Sole 24 Ore and the Corriere della Sera.

He developed his passion for horses as a grown-up, “Ever since I was a little boy, I spent the holidays in the family’s house in St. Moritz. I never enjoyed myself as much as I should have because due to health problems I wasn’t allowed to ski or practice many other sports. It was there that aged 37 I enrolled in a riding school and instantly became captivated. I wondered what to do about it when I returned to Milan and discussed the matter with my cousin Emanuele Castellini, who advised me to join the Castellazzo Riding Club, which I immediately did after being formally introduced to Graziano Mancinelli and his wife Nelly.”

Moving from a riding school for tourists to a centre of excellence such as Castellazzo was certainly not a painless experience for Jody Vender, who did, however, very quickly learn to adapt. “The first problem was posed by my horse. I had bought one in Switzerland without asking too many questions and thought it suited my needs perfectly. When it arrived, everyone gathered around the horsebox to see it. As soon as it had been unloaded, Mancinelli looked at me in disgust and said, “Dearest Vender, get rid of it immediately.” Then he turned and walked away. Not the best of starts, but he was right, since I had not even noticed that the horse had undergone a neurectomy.

Vender nonostante gli impegni professionali è riuscito a conciliare l’attività sportiva con il lavoro e per oltre vent’anni ha regolarmente preso parte a gare anche di buon livello. Ha smesso con l’agonismo nel 2005 dopo un intervento al cuore:“Avevo uno stile pessimo ma molto senso. Se mi sono divertito tantissimo lo devo a Charming, un cavallo belga comprato anche lui in Svizzera. L’ho avuto da quando aveva otto anni fino a trentadue ed era veramente fantastico. Basti considerare che ho festeggiato i suoi 30 anni in sella saltando un ostacolo di 1,30 m. Ne ho avuti molti altri di cavalli ma nessuno come lui”.

Castellazzo è un posto speciale ed è stata la presenza di Graziano Mancinelli a renderlo tale. “Il Cavaliere mi seguiva spesso ma chi mi aiutava maggiormente era la moglie Nelly. Uscivamo spesso in concorso, almeno un paio di volte al mese. Ho continuato a montare a cavallo e fino a qualche mese fa a possederne uno. Adoro la campagna e appena posso scappo da Milano in Val Tidone, nelle colline piacentine, in quella casa che amo molto e che considero il mio ‘buen retiro’. Lavorare in maneggio francamente non mi piace proprio mentre mi diverte molto andare in passeggiata. È per questo motivo che vorrei comprarmi un bel quarter horse. Ora seguo con gioia le mie nipotine, Emma e Maria. Entrambe hanno iniziato a montare a cavallo e mi sa che mi divertirò moltissimo nel ruolo di “ipppo-nonno”.

Actually, I didn’t even know what that meant.” In spite of his professional commitments, Vender managed to reconcile sport and work, and for more than twenty years regularly rode at horse shows jumping in quite big classes. He stopped competing in 2005 following heart surgery. “My style was appalling but I had a really good eye. If Ihad so much fun, I owe it to Charming, a Belgian horse I also bought in Switzerland as an eight-year-old and that I rode until he was thirty-two. He was really fantastic. We celebrated his 30th birthday together clearing a 1.30m jump. I have owned many other horses, but none like him.”

Castellazzo is a special place was made so by the presence of Graziano Mancinelli. “The Cavaliere [title of an Order of Merit in Italy, Editor’s Note] often taught me, but the person who helped me most of all was his wife Nelly. We often went to shows, at least twice a month. I continued to ride and until a few months ago still owned a horse. I adore the countryside and whenever possible I escape Milan and drive to the Val Tidone, on the hills near Piacenza where there is the house I love dearly and that I consider my ‘buen retiro’.

I don’t really like riding in an indoor school while I love going out hacking and that’s why I would like to buy a nice quarter horse. I now enjoy watching my granddaughters, Emma and Maria. They have both started riding and I am sure I will greatly enjoy the role of being a horsey grandfather.

Mi divertirò moltissimo nel ruolo di “ippo-nonno”.
