01 DUPLEX DEVELOPMENT VILLA FORESTA, MENDRISIO, SWITZERLAND 2016 The residential project stems from the client’s desire to build a second house in his own land. The building rises in front of the preexisting home, but without concealing the view to it. In fact, the project includes a large garden roof that can be used as a terrace by both families. The project includes two independent houses with structured gardens on terracing, the sleeping and service areas on the ground floor and the living area on the first floor. Both houses are characterised by a large skylight that allows the penetration of natural light up to the ground floor. The upper levels are designed open space so as to ensure an excellent view of the landscape. The glass doors can be completely opened to allow the fusion of the interior spaces with the exterior ones in the warm season. Even the bedrooms have large windows overlooking the garden, while maintaining privacy from the street thanks to the perimeter walls of the property.

02 PHYSICAL MODEL MEETING ROOM CO.MI.BIT., SIGIRINO, SWITZERLAND 2017 The 3x1 m model was developed from the need and desire to place a three-dimensional representation of the client company’s production site in the middle of the meeting room, to contribute and stimulate discussion and improve planning. To elaborate a model in line with reality, drone imagery, orthophotos and various in-situ photographs were used to complete the site survey. The collected information was then used for the 2D and 3D CAD modelling of the ground and the volumes. Then, the volumes of the buildings were 3D printed with a cutting edge technique, namely the sintering of Nylon powders. The 3D printed elements were then treated and airbrushed with acrylic paints, while for the assembly of the ground white FOREX panels were used. Thanks to the use of FOREX, the visual priority was given to the architectural structures so that they emerged from the background. physical model of the company

03 OFFICES FOR THE CITY OF LUGANO Lugano, Ticino, SWITZERLAND A.y. 2014 / 2015 Atelier Michele Arnaboldi The project develops parallel to one of the most dynamic and popular places in the city of Lugano, the train station. It takes into consideration various redevelopments and planned interventions, such as a new university campus, underground car park, underpass and bus terminal. Therefore, the project becomes an integral part of the city space both in the present and in the future. The building has a triple function: a sheltered bus terminal, a pedestrian connection between city and central station and an administrative and public space. The building consists of a plate with four vertical openings that allow greater natural lighting. It also includes a tower that stands out on the station and on the landscape. The first floor is characterised by public functions such as library, bookshop, cafe and access to the roof garden and tower. The second one consists of administrative spaces, both open space and more confidential ones, incorporating the tower’s first floor. The third and fourth floors are reserved for public use, cafe, restaurant and roof garden. The tower, also devoted to offices, ends with a two-storey cafe and one terrace that offers a wonderful view of the Gulf of Lugano.

REDEVELOPMENT OF QUATRO AGUAS ISLAND Ria Formosa, Algarve, PortUGAL A.Y. 2014 / 2015 Atelier JoÃo Nunes & João Gomes da Silva

post

5

The strategic location of the Quatro Aguas island makes it a popular transit destination for fishing, transportation to the nearby islands and marine tourism. The redevelopment program of this area aims to give a new life to a place that is both lived on a daily basis and neglected at the same time. The island is surrounded by salt flats, navigable waterways, water cultivation and extensive agriculture. This geographical and social setting is perfectly predisposed to become a great commercial pole for local products. Therefore, the renovation aims at attracting a flow of local people, but at the same time at those “eco-tourists” passing by and willing to touch with hand the local activities via workshops and trips. The project consists in the construction of a large stilt market for the sale of freshly harvested local products, the expansion of the current port, the reclamation of natural parks, a large parking at the entrance of the island, the construction of stilt apart-hotel for workers and tourists and the renovation of the preexisting buildings.

05 PENTHOUSE & SKY LOUNGE IN HAMBURG Hamburg, GermanY A.Y. 2013 / 2014 Atelier Martin Boesch The general program of this project is the reuse of a large building called City-Hof, consisting of 4 skyscrapers joined by a sheltered hallway. After the site survey and the reworking of the plans, this section deals in particular with the reuse of the 4 attics of the towers. The same structure lends itself effectively to two functions: as apartments and as a cafe-restaurant. These fall into two distinct uses, private and public. From the original supporting structure, the attics are developed on two levels, punctuated by large openings towards the city, like the preexisting floor below. In both cases, in the centre of the floor there is a large double-high space, characterised by an internal greenhouse equipped with an opening on the roof to allow natural light to filter. In the penthouse, this space is used as living room and reception area, while for the restaurant it is the main service room. In both situations, the plan is circumscribed by a balcony, which allow the relationship between inside and outside. The rooms’ pictures are handmade physical models.

06 TOURIST INFRASTRUCTURES ON THE MOUNT BRÈ

hotel

MoUNT BrÈ, Lugano, SWITZERLAND A.Y. 2013 / 2014 Atelier Michele Arnaboldi

observatory

The project was born from the desire to improve the daytime and nocturnal tourist attractivity of Mount Brè. The preexisting attractions (cable railway, panoramic restaurant and educational footpaths), the geographical position and the wonderful view of the lake and the Gulf of Lugano, have led to the development of the theme of sky observation. The project is thus composed by 4 interventions connected by a pedestrian path surrounded by nature and a shuttle service. The first intervention involves the redevelopment of the current main square and the insertion of an info point and refreshment building, and a new car park. The second one is the design of the night and solar observatory, connected to exhibition and multimedia halls. The third intervention is the planetarium, consisting of a projection dome of the celestial vault, research offices, conference room and cafe-restaurant. To extend the stay on Mount Brè, the program also includes a hotel. This building recalls the sky theme, with large windows positioned on the bedroom ceilings, in the sleeping area.

HOUSING UNITS IN UAGADOUGOU Gando, Burkina Faso, Africa A.Y. 2012 / 2013 Atelier Francis Diébédo Kéré The project idea aims to create a new housing district based on an easily repeatable construction method (pattern) able to improve the living conditions in this Third World country. After a thorough study of the culture, climate, habits and traditional buildings of Burkina Faso, the new residential project consists of private houses harmoniously connected to the community. Each house is based on the use of a series of elements arranged along two tracks joined by a central corridor. This creates various types of housing units of varying densities which give dynamism to the whole masterplan. They are built with locally sourced materials and following the autochthonous building tradition, with the addition of elements purposely designed for self-subsistence. The unit consists of a kitchen module, toilet, bedrooms, covered porch and a cistern for collecting rainwater. All the roofs convey rain into private tanks. The construction method used ensures good natural ventilation throughout the rooms.

08 MUSEUM IN SPERLONGA Sperlonga, Napoli, ItALY A.Y. 2012 / 2013 Atelier Francesco Venezia The project site is the archaeological area of the ruins of the villa of the Roman emperor Tiberius. The building is a museum housing statues and various archaeological finds found on the spot. It is a path that crosses the natural landscape and the historical ruins, leading the visitor into the Tiberius’ cave and its pools. The museum connects the ancient statues to the exact place of their discovery. The visitor entering the building momentarily abandons the relationship with the landscape, connecting deeply with the relics illuminated by natural diffused light. The suspended corridor overlooking the morphology of the mountain accompanies the deep tunnel of intertwined stairs. It is a long descent that leads its viewer into the ruins, passing from a dark and confined environment to another totally natural and illuminated. Once at the end, the cave of Tiberius offers the visitor the reconnection with the landscape through an explosion of natural light.
