FIRSTLY OBTAIN THE LATEST DAT FILE: Create a temporary folder C:\DAT using Windows Explorer. Now to download DAT, Engine, XDAT, or Stinger, go to official website of McAfee, select Products > Downloads > Securityupdates. (You may need to download these if automated update fails or if you wish to use an ExtraDAT on an infected PC.) Now Download avvdat-xxxx.zip (here xxxx refers to the latest DAT version)
TO ALLOW CHANGES TO MCAFEE SERVICES: Go
to Start and then Click Programs > McAfee > VirusScan console. Here double click the Access Protection and then deselect Prevent McAfee services from being stopped. Click OK. So exit now the VirusScan console.
STEPS TO STOP MCAFEE SERVICES: Go
to Start and type Run in the search box. In the provided box enter services.msc and then click OK. Give a right click to McAfee McShield and select Stop. Again give a right click to McAfee Framework and tap Stop. Now exit the Services screen.
EXTRACT THE DAT FILE:
Extract the .DAT file using WinZip. Press and hold CTRL key and then select following files: avvclean.dat avvnames.dat avvscan.dat
Give a right-click on one the selected files mentioned above and then click Copy. Now go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\McAfee\Engine. Give a right-click on Engine directory and tap Paste. Lastly, select Yes to All if you are prompted to replace the existing files.
NOW VERIFY THAT THE UPDATE IS DONE SUCCESSFULLY: Click
Start > Programs > McAfee > VirusScan console. Here click Help> About.
