Our analysis of markets and economic trends indicates that we should increase our industrial presence in other countries and continents as a way to continue growing and strengthening our competitiveness in the global scenario that is coming ahead. With an eye toward this goal, ALIBERICO has designed the Vision 5 Plan, which aims to quadruple the size of the Group between 2011 and 2015. This is an ambitious but realistic plan that has been developed in detail for each of the business areas and companies of the Group. The Vision 5 Plan is a qualitative advance in the foreign strategy of the Group. It involves continuing to invest in technological innovation and talent as competitive factors, but also to choose to establish plants in markets with high growth potential. The first results of the Plan are already a reality for ALUCOIL. As reported inside, the company has just closed the purchase of the American aluminum composite panel manufacturer Intrabond and only a few months ago, ALUCOIL DO BRASIL was created to meet the needs of the Latin American market. After North Africa, the Americas are our next international goal. Manufacturing and selling in dollars as well as having some of our industrial activities on this continent will give us access to new business opportunities and give us greater flexibility in international operations. These factors together with the incorporation of renowned professionals into these new businesses, backed by the knowledge and experience that our team provides from factories in Spain, ensures our future success. The ALIBERICO GROUP international expansion plan has taken off and there is no looking back. First it was Africa, now the Americas, and soon other new markets in other continents.

ALUCOIL enters the American market with the purchase of 100% of INTRABOND The company aims to obtain over 15% of North American market in the next two years

A

LUCOIL has purchased 100% of the company Intrabond, one of the four U.S. manufacturers of aluminum composite panels and will begin operating in that market under the name of ALUCOIL NORTH AMERICA. The purchase transaction has been closed by ALUCOIL with U.S. group Intraco, owner to date of 100% of Intrabond, dedicated to the distribution of glass for the automotive and construction industries and the marketing of vehicles and accessories. Intraco is present in the U.S. and Middle East, with bases in Michigan and Dubai, respectively. Leading Intrabond as general manager will be Samuel Chastain, 42 year old industrial engineer, signed by ALUCOIL last August and so far the director of worldwide marketing for one of the large multinationals in this sector. The new Chairman and CEO will be Clemente Gonz叩lez Soler, President of the ALIBERICO GROUP and ALUCOIL. Intrabond has a modern factory, installed in 2009, with two production lines for aluminum composite panels, in Manning, South Carolina, near the port of Charleston, where it will channel imports of raw materials and exports to Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean as well as supplying the U.S. domestic market. The new ALUCOIL acquisition is part of the aggressive internationalization strategy of the company, which began with the opening of ALUCOIL MAROC in November 2010 in Casablanca and which has continued with the establishment of ALUCOIL DO BRASIL. Currently, the company is undertaking the construction of a new composite panel factory in Sao Paulo, Brazil. ALUCOIL NORTH AMERICA expects to have more than 15% of the U.S. market in the next two years incorporating new technology for composite panels developed its own know-how at the factory in Miranda de Ebro (Burgos), for more than fifteen years. The new U.S. plant will manufacture standard panels

and will also market some of the specialties such as larcore速, the revolutionary new honeycomb panel, manufactured exclusively by ALUCOIL in Burgos. The panels marketed under the name of Intrabond will switch to the new brands larson速 and Alucoil速, owned by the Group and will be further enhanced through an intense marketing campaign over the next 18 months, with a focus on the most important engineering and architecture studies in the country and companies specialized in metal cladding facades. The acquisition will involve a total investment of 12 million dollars, of which 5 will be invested between 2011 and 2012 and another 7 from 2013.

Spanish aluminum technology for the world

S

ince its inception in 1996 in Miranda de Ebro, ALUCOIL has been growing continuously. Over the past fifteen years it has seen five expansions and has gone from having an initial 2,000 square meter (21,400 square feet) warehouse to now having a modern 28,000 square meter (300,000 square feet) factory equipped with advanced technology and high automation manufacturing processes. ALUCOIL currently employs 100 professionals in its entirety, all residents from the town of Miranda de Ebro (Burgos, Spain). The company regularly develops training plans for employees and annually invests around 3% of its revenue in R+D+I, (Research, Development & Innovation).

ALUCOIL bets strongly on its innovation and technological development, and has made its products leaders in each specialty area such as the high quality powder coating termolac® for the protection and decoration of rolled products, and the aluminum composite panels larson®, for the construction industry. Together, ALUCOIL has been able to developed revolutionary products such as the aluminum foam airlite®, the aluminum multilayered mirrors Almirr® for solar concentration and the honeycomb panel larcore®, the only honeycomb panel produced in the world continuously for the sectors of construction, industrial and transport. With the expansion and internationalization plan, it is expected that all ALUCOIL´s proprietary technology will expand across the globe.

“I feel proud to belong to the great team at ALUCOIL” Samuel Chastain, General Manager at ALUCOIL NORTH AMERICA

M

r. Samuel Chastain has assumed the responsibility for the day to day management of ALUCOIL NORTH AMERICA. He has spent the past 13 years working in the field of aluminum composite panels in one of the largest global companies in the sector. His latest responsibility was as Marketing Director in that range of products. Chastain, who has spent part of his career in France and Brazil, and speaks English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Panorama held an interview with him to find out what challenges he faces at the company. What were the main reasons for joining ALUCOIL? From my point of view it is a very exciting and ambitious project for both the North American and broader global market, a big attraction for any professional. Also, I have to admit that I was very impressed by the professional caliber of the people that are part of ALUCOIL and the ALIBERICO GROUP. They are a great team with a degree of commitment and engagement that I am very proud to be a part of going forward. I also have to say that the ALUCOIL product range is wide and truly in the highest quality bracket of the market- a factor that makes any business leader’s dream come true. How do you currently see the North American market? Clearly, the construction sector is not doing well at the moment, but it is also true that the composite panels are increasingly gaining market share versus other building materials and are consistently becoming more of a standard in the nonresidential building sector. This, together with the fact that the company will participate actively in the market for corporate image and design, sets us up for a promising future in a market with much upside potential. Being present in the Uni-

ted States opens the doors to Canada, Mexico, and other areas of the region. What do you think is the hottest new product in the ALUCOIL range? Undoubtedly, larson® is among the top, with its offering in metal, copper, zinc, stainless steel and brass. It must be said that ALUCOIL pioneered the manufacture of these materials in the world and it has become a benchmark for the market. Also, the importance of the new product larcore® must be highlighted, with its application in architecture, transportation and industry, and more specifically in the construction of trains, buses and boats, especially high-speed ferries. It is a product without competition, innovative and a high technology component which is characterized by its lightness and great strength. What market share is forecast for ALUCOIL NORTH AMERICA? We have just bought Intrabond and plan to migrate its corporate image to match that of the Group. In addition, we are planning an ambitious marketing campaign over the next 18 months in the North American market. All this in order to achieve a rapid return on investment and generate cash flow that will allow us to undertake even newer investments. In fact, we have plans to expand the plant and warehouse within the next three years. The result of all these efforts we have forecasted that will evolve into a 15% of the North American market share within the first two years. Will joining ALUCOIL mean changing your life? The main change will be moving my family from Atlanta, Georgia, where we currently live, to a location closer to the ALUCOIL plant located in Manning, South Carolina. We will most certainly relocate to the area between Manning and Charleston.

ollowing its strategy of continuous improvement in order to remain always at the forefront of its sector both in technology and human resources processes, in early September ALUCOAT incorporated Fernando Parlange San Miguel as head of industrial processes.

ALUCOIL Deutschland is born

F

ollowing its expansion plan, ALUCOIL recently opened a new sales office in Germany, located in the town of Radolfzell on the shores of Lake Constance. Thus, ALUCOIL will be able to provide better service to the German and Swiss markets, marketing and selling larson® composite panels for the construction industry, and the revolutionary new honeycomb panel aluminum larcore® for the transportation sector (construction of trucks, buses, trains and high speed ferries) and construction of architectural facades. This new office joins those in existence throughout Europe, expanding the network of information and technical assistance available to ALUCOIL products throughout the continent. Peter Fischer, one of the most experienced professionals in the aluminum and composite panel industry in Germany, has been hired as Director of ALUCOIL Deutschland. The business office address is: ALUCOIL DEUTSCHLAND Fritz-Reichle-Ring 6a, 78315 Radolfzelll.

Fernando Parlange, industrial engineer, mechanical specialist, had been working for another multinational company for 23 years where he has held senior positions in the various factories of the group, always within the area of Production, Quality and Engineering. Fernando Parlange has joined ALUCOAT to ensure continuous improvement in the use of equipment and production processes in order to further raise the level of quality and production efficiency. His contribution will be significant given his extensive experience in implementing continuous improvement systems such as Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing and process control.

Kanban system at ALIBERICO PACKAGING

A

LIBERICO PACKAGING has begun to implement the Kanban system at its factory in Alcalá de Henares within the manipulated linear zone. Considered a Just in Time subsystem, this is an information system that harmoniously controls the production of products needed at the exact quantity and time required in each of the processes taking place inside the factory. Also called a “card system”, it utilizes cards fixed to material containers which are removed when material is consumed to signal the need for replacement of those materials. The cards act as a visual indicator in the production process. The same plant has adopted a Lean Manufacturing system to avoid finished product stock outs.

ALUCOIL builds its first factory in Brazil ALUCOIL DO BRASIL is the fruit of the alliance with the Brazilian industrial company Tekno

A

LUCOIL has started construction work on its new factory in Sao Paulo (Brazil), after having established the new company ALUCOIL DO BRASIL. ALUCOIL owns 51% of the company. The other 49% is owned by the Brazilian company Tekno, a company with over 70 years of history trading on the Sao Paulo stock exchange and shareholder, among other multinationals, in the steel giant ArcelorMittal.

Brazil plays a key role in the internationalization project being undertaken by ALUCOIL. The new factory will be the spearhead to provide the local market and other countries of the region with the full range of company products, including the latest technology in the world within the aluminum industry. Not surprisingly, ALUCOIL will become the only producer of this material on the South American continent with a market share reaching 35% in countries like Brazil and Argentina.

ALUCOIL DO BRASIL, chaired by Clemente Gonzรกlez Soler, plans to undertake an early stage of investments of 3.5 million Euros, which could be extended from 2013 to another 7.5 million. The new plant will start operating in February 2012 and will specialize in the manufacture of aluminum composite panels.

The investments in Brazil, the U.S., Morocco, and a planned opportunity in Australia slated for 2013, will provide ALUCOIL with the presence needed to compete in the global market and advance its goal of becoming a significant reference in the global market sector. This accomplishment has contributions from its own technology, a highly trained technical and industrial team and know-how without comparison.

INTERVIEW

“The key is to form teams that share objectives and wants” Ignacio Martín Maroto, Managing Director of ALIBERICO FOOD PACKAGING is based on humility and effort. “The key is to form teams that share objectives and wants and to apply common sense,” he says. What reasons led you to go for ALIBERICO? I really liked the project and I was motivated by Clemente’s personality. I trusted him completely. I saw the possibility of developing an exciting new project within a company that invests in growing in all directions and facing innovative challenges in the packaging industry. What has caught the attention of ALIBERICO FOOD PACKAGING in these eight months? Its operating style. It is a company unlike any other in which I have previously worked and i have had to learn the world of aluminum. Packaging is an exciting activity that involves more technology and knowledge than people think. Inside any packaging there is research, development and design. In addition, the product demands very high requirements and low prices. Since I started working in this industry, it has constantly been surprising me. Are there plans for the company to grow in client number, geographical presence and range of products? We are working on several lines of action, and one of them is on track to bring our products to new markets. For example, in the medium term, we want to be in North Africa, North America and Northern Europe. With regard to our product strategy, we want to extend our range into new materials like plastic or biodegradable materials. In this sense, our idea is to re-launch the PALCO Bio® line. We believe there is some demand from the market for this type of solution.

M

anager at ALIBERICO FOOD PACKAGING for eight months, Mr. Martin is an industrial engineer from the Polytechnic University of Madrid- specializing in Electricity, Automation & Electronics. He has an extensive experience in manufacturing environments and throughout his career has worked for several automotive companies. Five years ago he landed in the packaging industry, specifically in the PET, which is the product used to manufacture plastic bottles. His management style

In what way will the Vision 5 Plan affect the ALIBERICO FOOD PACKAGING projects? This is a long term plan that requires us to be ever more competitive in every way and which will make us tackle new markets and expand our range of packaging solutions but above all will make us understand our customers’ needs better each day. The market demands that we are innovative and creative because, in the end, the packaging is an inseparable part of the product image. Our commitment to value lies in being different from other competitors and offering optimal solutions to our customers. We do not want to be distinguished only by price. In this

INTERVIEW

“The Vision 5 Plan demands that we are constantly more competitive and that we meet our customers requirements better” position we need help from marketing and communication and in particular our new website which will allow any client or potential customer to approach us for help in designing the best packaging system. How much of the company sales do exports currently make up? Overseas sales now account for 60% of the total and our goal is to gradually increase this share. The fall in domestic consumption forces us to grow outwards to the extent that we cannot rule out that in two or three years we may face the challenge of setting up a factory outside our borders. Can you remember the list of countries that you export to? We export to approximately 15 countries among them, some exotic destinations as far as China. In this country we have been selling coated products for the food industry. Another far off market is Mexico. In Europe, we sell in Italy, Portugal, Germany,

Poland and France. In fact, we are the leading supplier of aluminum cans in France. We are also present in Morocco. In recent months, some changes related to corporate culture and production management have happened. Can you describe them? It is simply putting the customer first, and providing good service at all times. We’ve also shifted to a mentality of “it’s not always about acquiring more assets but rather, increasing the efficiency of the factory”. In this sense, we are introducing a Lean Manufacturing culture in our processes which is based on common sense rules, very simple and methodical. For me, a good professional is one who applies effort, perseverance and common sense in what he does and also does his duty with humility and simplicity. I believe in computer-based systems which set common goals and in which members help each other.

he flagship project of Gemelos 28 (Twins 28) in Benidorm is finished and among its hallmarks is larson®. Specifically, the facades of these two towers that are destined to become the icon of the city over the next few years have been clad with larson® aluminum composite panels with the LCH1 system according to the DIT 405-R. This specification has become essential to guarantee support against the high wind loads present due to the location and height of the landmark project. Responsible for quality control was the prestigious firm INTEMAC, which included the collaboration of facade expert Emiliano Madrid, responsible for executing the work. Gemelos 28 (Twins 28) is an initiative of Ballester Inmobiliaria, the promoter with increased investment in the Marina Baixa area and comprises two towers of 21 floors each, with 168 homes in total.

Located in a privileged location on the rocks of Punta Llisera, the home owners will have access to the existing natural platforms in the area and the promenade via their panoramic lift. The project has received numerous awards including the FAD Award in the category of city and countryside and an award from the Museum of Architecture and Design in Chicago for “Best New Global Design.” Their sinuous forms, mimicking the waves of the sea, make them unique and give harmony to the area from the west, while naturally integrating the sea, beach and urban environment. At present, it is possible that a project so close to the sea which satisfies the most demanding wishes in quality, design and performance does not exist anywhere on the Mediterranean coast. The complex has been equipped with the latest advances in construction and luxury materials featuring a spa, an outdoor heated pool, a gym, a clubhouse and shops.

IDM, CONSTRUMAT award 2011 in Construction

A

n IDM project in collaboration with the architects of Juan Herreros, the industrialized property Garoza 10.1 in Muñogalindo (Ávila) has won the Construmat Building award 2011. This was a project carried out in 2010 under a modular housing scheme which allows for extensions and changes and therefore, is always adaptable to the needs and personality of the owners. Units were built on the IDM premises complete with all interior finishes; a circumstance that added to the standardization of dimensions for transport made it possible for the project to be carried out with a very low degree of complexity. The exterior design is totally industrial and it highlights the installation of high points that keep the land on which it is situated intact. This system provides great

advantages in terms of insulation, ventilation and climate performance. The interior consists of a clear floor with a fully functional island kitchen, living room and a bathroom. The stairs giving access to the upper floor lead to the only bedroom in the house. Garoza House hosts facilities of high technical quality, home automation and other custom items like a revolving fireplace. The resulting assembly provides quality control over the execution time, plans for maintenance and expansion options far greater than traditional construction. At all times we have taken into account the principles of sustainable economy and the spirit of environmental conservation and recycling. Once again it has been shown that IDM manufactures modular buildings for the future.
