First council to pass the motion to eradicate the s*n in Liverpool From the smallest newsagent to the largest institutions, the S*n 'newspaper' is reviled in the City of Liverpool. After a meeting that took place on the 14th of September at the Liverpool City Council, admins of totaleclipseofthes*n group made a compelling presentation which lead to a motion calling on all newsagents in Liverpool to cease selling the S*n.

At a meeting of the full council at Liverpool town hall tonight councillors backed a motion calling on retailers to stop selling the paper.

The notice of motion says “Due to crowd control mismanagement those fans, whose ages ranged from 10 to 67 years old, had the life crushed out of them.

“Contrary to the facts, The S*n published a front page story with the banner headline ‘The Truth’ which contained blatant lies.

Far reaching support as Derry & Strabane join Liverpool in passing the motion to boycott the reviled 'newspaper' The people of Strabane have long been strong supporters of the campaign. There are newsagents there not selling the S*n, taxis and businesses displaying their dislike of the rag and the local Council, backed a motion calling on all vendors of the rag there to cease selling it.

IN THE PRESS The S*n astonished at councils motion Source: Councillors in Derry and Strabane have voted to call on shopkeepers in the district to stop selling The Sun newspaper.

The motion was carried by 27 votes in favour with just one against while several councillors, believed to be unionists, abstained.

The Sun is disliked in Liverpool because of untrue claims it printed about Hillsborough disaster victims, however, it remains one of the best selling newspapers in the north.

Mr Gallagher encouraged retailers to boycott the paper.

“Since I can remember this paper has produced lies after lies after lies,” he claimed.

Wirral council passes motion in a unified, unanimous decision The momentous decision at Wirral Council to unanimously support the totaleclipseofthes*n motion was accompanied by a 3 minute standing ovation.

- Cllr Abbey Source: The notice of motion to Wirral council quotes lies from the The S*n’s report including accusations that Liverpool supporters were drunk and attacking rescue workers – all of which have been shown to be untrue.

The claims in the article were found to be entirely without foundation and the end product of a smear campaign to shift blame onto victims.

Cllr Abbey said: “Hillsborough had a profound effect on me and I gave my season ticket up afterwards.”

Cllr Abbey who remains a Liverpool supporter, said: “I fully support the aims of Total Eclipse of the S*n, and do not believe the S*n should be on the shelves of newsagents in Merseyside.”

West Lancashire Councillor Kevin Wilkie, brought the motion to ask all newspaper vendors to cease selling the S*n.

30 councillors voted in favour of the motion, 12 voted against as the campaign continues to gain momentum.

- Cllr Kevin Wilkie Source: Cllr Kevin Wilkie, who forwarded the motion - and was at Hillsborough in 1989 gave a passionate speech to fellow councillors.

The councillor for Digmoor, in Skelmersdale , said: “I was 14 years old when I attended that match with my dad and my friend. After the crush I couldn’t find my mate, but people were dead.”

Becoming emotional in the council chamber, Cllr Wilkie urged his fellow councillors to support him in putting a stop to the paper being sold in West Lancashire.

He said: “Let’s stop it, lets stop what they’re doing.”

His best friend, Dave Hughes, lost his father Eric in the disaster.

Cllr Wilkie refused to even mention the paper by name during his speech, and he slammed the publication for failing to acknowledge the finding of Hillsborough Inquests, which ruled the 96 were unlawfully killed and exonerated fans who had been blamed for the disaster, on their front page. He simply called it “that rag I refuse to name”.

17th November 2016 SEFTON COUNCIL Sefton Council joins Liverpool City, Derry and Strabane, Wirral and West Lancashire Council in passing a motion calling on all retailers in their area to stop selling the s*n 'newspaper'.

Delight as the council shows overwhelming support for the motion by totaleclipseofthes*n. Passionate and heartfelt speeches echoed for a tragedy that has left a scar on the collective soul of Liverpool.

IN THE PRESS Sefton Council is urging all shops in the borough to stop selling The s*n newspaper.

Source: A Labour councillor has filed a motion asking for the council to join the Total Eclipse of the S*n campaign.

If passed, the motion, filed by Linacre ward councillor Gordon Friel, would mean the council calls on all retailers and vendors to stop selling the controversial newspaper. The ban would be voluntary, but would be encouraged by the council.

The Sun has been hated among many in the area ever since its infamous “The Truth” front page after the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 in which 96 people were killed.

Cllr Friel's motion states: "On 15th April 1989, a disaster at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield led, ultimately, to the deaths of 96 innocent fans who had left home that morning to watch a football match.

Preston City Council become the sixth authority to support the totaleclipseofthes*n campaign motion Totaleclipseofthes*n motion passed with 30 councillors showing support. This means shops and newsagents in Preston will now be called upon to stop selling the newspaper.

IN THE PRESS 30 councillors vote in agreement of the motion Source: Labour councillor John Browne put forward the motion originally, arguing that two of the Hillsborough victims were from Preston, Christine Anne Jones and Gerald Baron, and the S*n published “blatant lies” about those who had “the life crushed out of them”.

Two members of the anti S*n campaign group ‘Total Eclipse of The S*n’ travelled to Preston for the hearing and stood in the Town Hall with banners and posters.

A spokesperson from the group told the Echo: “We’re delighted that Preston has joined Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral, West Lancashire, Derry & Strabane councils alongside Mersey Travel in asking their newsagents to cease selling that particular newspaper.

“We hope more councils follow suit.

“Newsagents have a freedom of choice and we hope they will respond favourably to their councillors’ call.”

'The Magnificent Seven' St. Helens Council votes, the s*n is not welcome here!

At the full meeting St Helens Council has voted to ask all vendors of the s*n "newspaper" in their area to stop selling it.

St Helens becomes the 7th Council to pass this motion, joining the principled Councils of Liverpool, Derry and Strabane, Wirral, West Lancs, Sefton and Preston in passing this motion.

IN THE PRESS ''The council recognises and will not forget the hurt and distress caused to the people of Merseyside'' - Cllr Shields Source: Calls for the S*n newspaper to be removed from St Helens shops have been backed by the council.

In a motion by Parr councillor Terry Shields the local authority was asked to support the Total Eclipse of The S*n campaign – urging retailers in the borough to take the newspaper off their shelves.

The S*n has been hated on Merseyside ever since their infamous “The Truth” front page printed after the Hillsborough Disaster in which 96 people were killed.

Cllr Shields put forward a passionate motion to fellow councillors about the newspaper and its role in the aftermath of events on April 15, 1989.

He said: “St Helens Council notes that a disaster at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield on 15 April 1989 led ultimately to the deaths of 96 innocent people who had left their homes that morning to watch a football match.

Unanimous vote as Knowsley Council ask all newsagents to cease selling the most offensive publication on their shelves.

Eight Councils now on board adopting the motion

and calling for all newsagents to cease selling the reviled tabloid. Knowsley becomes the second council to back the motion in the month of January 2016.

IN THE PRESS “The council wishes to express its disgust that these slurs on the victims of this disaster were published by a British national newspaper.”

- Cllr Moorhead Source: Cllr Moorhead added that ‘Knowsley GMB was campaigning to eliminate The S*n newspaper from the borough, and this council therefore resolved to support Knowsley GMB’s campaign’.

However the printers of the tabloid, which are based in Kirkby, have spoken of their ‘deep disappointment’ over the local authorities decision.

A spokesman for NewsPrinters say that ‘it is extraordinary that the council would look to undermine ongoing investment in the area’.

Halton Borough Council have unanimously voted to back the Total Eclipse of the S*n campaign.

This council expresses its support for the families of the Hillsborough disaster that tragically occurred at Sheffield on the 15th April 1989.

This disaster directly affected families at Halton and we commend the continuing efforts of relatives and friends of the victims of the disaster in their search for justice. It is this Council's hope that in due course the conclusions reached by the Hillsborough inquest will come to finally result in justice for the victims of this tragedy.

Further, we understand the continuing feelings being expressed by people throughout the Liverpool City Region at the inaccurate and hurtful reporting of the disaster by The S*n newspaper and support the efforts to raise awareness of this by the campaign 'Total Eclipse of the S*n'.

Cheshire West & Chester joins nine other principled councils who have taken a formal stance against the s*n Cheshire West and Chester Council support city boycott

of controversial tabloid becoming the 10th council to pass the motion in quick succession.

They have been found out for lying, for abusing their power and for failing to admit when they got it wrong.''

Eleven councils now stand formally against the s*n 'newspaper' as the momentum continues to grow since first motion passed only one year ago.

Source: Councillors said it showed 'moral support' for anger against the newspaper over it's reporting of the Hillsborough disaster.

Councillors in Flintshire today voted in favour of the motion, which was brought by deputy council leader Bernie Attridge and Cllr Kevin Hughes.

The proposal won the backing of 37 members, with six against and 18 abstentions.

The motion was put forward as a result of the newspaper’s coverage of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, when 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives, including some from North Wales.
