DESIGNER| ILLUSTRATOR | CREATIVE

IT’S NICE TO MEET YOU

HELLO!

www.alexanderjward.com I’m Alex, a London-born designer, illustrator, creative practitioner, and overall pencil ninja. As a recent graduate with a 2:1 BA(Hons) in Graphic Design from the University of the West of England, I’m on the lookout for exciting creative positions in the UK and overseas, whether they involve design, illustration, editorial, film, layout, logos, animation, and more! After specialising in illustration for most of my life, it was during my studies in Bristol when I discovered my love of the many different facets of design. My skills so far have developed through conceptual thinking, innovative ideas, and visual experimentation, all for the purpose of communicating with an audience, and meeting the demands of a brief. Half-a-year of living in South East Asia allowed me to develop my understanding of audience interpretation and pay close attention to designing for different cultures and demographics. I hope you like what you see, and I look forward to working with you!

VILLUSTRATED Combining illustration with academic research, this series of booklets explores the psychological impact of Walt Disney Company’s 20th Century animated features on young people, investigating the implementation of stereotypes of minorities, negative aesthetics, and the concept of otherness in the portrayal of their antagonists, and how this has an impact on our cultural and social development.

METAMORPHOSIS A short film attempting to disrupt existing stereotypes surrounding a practice which many believe to be ‘inextricably linked’ to the sex industry, Metamorphosis challenges these presumptions by representing the act of pole dancing, not as a sexually objectifying performance, but as an art form.

#BEAUTYISPAIN A poster series showcasing real statements exactly as they appear on Twitter under the hashtag ‘#BeautyIsPain’, revealing the extent to which our society goes through in the pursuit of something that is inherently subjective.

COMPULSION A hand-drawn animation consisting of 1362 pencil drawings, which uses existing commercial audio to explore the restrictions we place upon ourselves as we adhere to society’s conventions.

THE FASHION PERSPECTIVE Editorial design featuring illustration alongside the views of industry professionals who work to construct commercial fashion imagery. Regularly criticised for their portrayals of body image, these creative individuals have been given an opportunity to speak out and contextualise their work, allowing readers to reconsider what it is they think they know about the fashion industry and re-evaluate the images that surround them.
