Hello Circle K’ers! Welcome to Circle K at UC Riverside! This is Crista Cabahug here serving as your President for the 2012-2013 year! Are you as excited as I am? Excited for what exactly?! :O Excited for a whole year full of a wide variety of service projects ranging from tutoring elementary students to renovating low-income facilities, participating in HUGE district events to meet people from all over CalNev-Ha while building your leadership abilities, and to most of all, MAKING A BUNCH OF NEW FRIENDS! I know I am totally ecstatic to see what this year will bring and how all of YOU will be a part of it. You are now embarking on one of the most beneficial and life-changing journeys that will make your memories in college everlasting. Thanks for picking Circle K to serve, to lead, and to befriend as a part of your lives.

Sincerely, Crista Cabahug President | 2012-2013 Circle K International at UC Riverside

STC South was an amazing event! After attending four Spring Training Conferences, this year’s was definitely the best. I was amazed at the fact that there were over fifty workshops available. From Treasurer Workshops to Improv, there was a plethora of choices for members to select from. Not only was STC educational, but it also had a ton of fellowship. Schools from Desert Oasis, Magic Kingdom, Central Coast, Metro, and Foothill cheered and represented their clubs! My favorite memory from this year’s STC was hosting the Event Planning workshop. Seeing over fifty people attend was really awesome! There was a lot of audience interaction, and the workshop as a whole helped a lot of members from other schools learn how to plan successful events. Stefanie Chow, from UC San Diego, was the STC South Chair and she did an amazing job organizing the event. Everyone who attended STC had a remarkable time. This is by far one of the greatest District Events I have had the chance of attending. I highly encourage all members to attend as many District Events as possible!

very year, CKI hosts two of its biggest events: Fall Training Conference and District Convention. These two events are always sure to be amazing and filled with countless memories and a vast amount of energy throughout the weekend. DCON this year didn’t disappoint. Cal-Nev-Ha’s 58th annual District Convention was held in Woodland Hills at the Marriott Hotel and took place Friday, March 23rd through Sunday, March 25th. With almost forty of our very own UC Riverside Circle K’ers attending this event, I could feel the excitement of new and old members alike when it was being talked about. Friday afternoon, we headed out to the hotel which was about an hour and a half away, having fun in the car, messing around and annoying Jimmy. Once we got to Los Angeles and went through the hassle of parking and registering for this enormous event, it was time for opening session! Clubs from all over California, Nevada, and Hawaii met up in the ballroom to be introduced and to cheer their hearts out. After this, we had a small break where we could go buy food at the very conveniently located mall across the street. By 9 pm, I went to help with caucusing while our club members went to the designated caucusing rooms to hear the candidate’s speeches. Once this ended, we all gathered together in one of the hotel’s room to discuss and choose who we believed to be the best candidates for the district and international board. This took around an hour and, of course, we were all exhausted from the long day and called it a night.

Saturday morning we were up bright and early to hear a few more speeches and the results of caucusing. After this, we had a little break and then headed off to workshops! There were many workshops throughout the day, whether you wanted to work on a service project creating board games for children, listen to a presentation on how to manage your money (led by Edward Rivera!), or engage in a new member mixer filled with icebreakers, there was bound to be something that interested everyone. When workshops were over, we had another break. Yay breaks! While some people decided to sleep or mingle with friends from other schools, William Wong, Tiffany Por, and I decided to go to the Jacuzzi. Although I just stuck my feet in, the water felt amazing, especially when because I had been wearing heels the whole day and the night before! Then it was dinner time! During this time, we had the awards ceremony as well, so it was quite a long meal. After dinner, we had a small break and then it was time for the talent acts! There were some technical difficulties at first, but everything worked out in the end. Since DCON was Tron themed, a lot of clubs decided to have dance acts under a black light, making their act literally glow. Once the singing, dancing, and skits were over, it was time for the dance! Or, if dancing wasn’t your thing, you could play video games, go to the poker room (where I spent most of my night), or check out the scrapbooks from other clubs. Then it was sleep time once more!

Sunday morning, a bittersweet day for everyone. For many graduating Circle K’ers, this would be their last large district event. During breakfast the new district board along with the new district governor (J-Cao!) was inaugurated. After this ended, Desert Oasis took group pictures together and our past Lieutenant Governor, Crista Cabahug, gave a teary speech thanking us for a great year. Then it was that time again. Time to end this amazing District Convention and wait until the next one. Being lucky enough to have attended both DCON’s in the (almost) past two years as a Circle K member, I can definitely say that this DCON was the best one yet! It is events like these that make me so glad I joined Circle K. There is true love and passion in every member and a real sense of family throughout our UCR club. Congratulations to all the graduating members! I hope you all enjoyed this DCON as much as I did!

On May 5th, Circle K of UCR participated in the May Relay for Life on the UCR Recreational Center’s volleyball and basketball enclosure. Relay for Life is an organization that seeks to help the search for the cure to cancer. Established around a decade ago, Relay for Life has become a renowned organization for its dedication to helping patients, their families, and loved ones through the entire ordeal. Although the start time of the event was 9 am, there were a few individuals who came early at 7:45 to set things up for the rest of the Circle K’ers. When the rest of Circle K arrived at 9, we began making duct tape flowers to sell in order to fundraise. Mei Kuen Tran, our KRock Chair arrived, but not empty-handed. She had decided to make friendship bracelets to sell to raise funds for KRock, our annual benefit concert. Throughout the day, as the sun heated up and more people arrived, Ryan Vescera and Vincent Ng kept a constant round of the track, showing our club’s respect for the Relay for Life cause. As night fell and the mood grew more somber, and we began the “why you relay” portion of the event. We were privileged to hear the stories of cancer survivors and their loved ones, and not only was it a touching event, but also eye-opening. Sadly we could not stay the night as we had Spring Training Conference the next day, but the impact of the event was felt by all.

By Wilson Shiau On April 28th, numerous Circle K members volunteered to help out at the March of Dimes. March of Dimes is one of the most recognized benefit walks which helps ensure that every baby gets a chance at a healthy start. Being the dedicated members that we are, we were prepared to start helping out by 4 A.M. Many of us had taken a short nap prior to arriving, but there were a daring few who were willing to attack the service without any rest. Upon arrival, we were asked by a lady dressed in pink to complete multiple tasks. We split up into groups and were assigned specific duties in order to maximize our efficiency. Some groups had to accomplish goals such as setting up tables, chairs, and balloons through the blistering cold. Other groups had the fingers swell as they tied balloons in an orderly fashion. With the help of other volunteers, all groups had completed their task, and the March of Dimes was ready to begin. At 7 A.M., runners had begun to arrive. As the morning progressed, the weather began to get warm. A

group of our finest volunteers were standing at the entrance ready to greet them as they entered. In order to get the runners pumped and motivated, they cheered and thanked them for what they were doing. At one booth, shirts were being handed out by our members to runners who had managed to raise a minimum of $200. At the food and refreshments booth, hot dogs, snacks, and water were being handed out to people who were hungry. There was also a booth where people who were injured could be taken care of. By 12 A.M., it was blazing hot and all the runners had completed their March of Dimes. Volunteers were tired, and many could not help but rest on a chair, but their service was not over yet. Our final duty was to clean up the beautiful decorations we had set up earlier that morning, and to pick up any trash we found on the floor. It was a long clean up due to the fatigue of many volunteers, but we had successfully completed our task by 1 P.M.

Members were up bright and early at seven o’clock for the Kingsley Elementary School Makeover on Saturday morning, April 14, but the same could not be said for the weather. We were all fortunate it did not shower that day which would have cancelled the project, although there was a slight overcast. The morning started off with roughly 20 Circle K’ers, with some new and prospective faces, on a 45 minute car ride to Pomona, California. When we all finally reached our destination, we were all greeted with name tags, free shirts, and breakfast. After breakfast, a few encouraging and inspirational words were delivered along with an unexpected marriage proposal! When all speeches were delivered, clusters of volunteers from all age groups were separated into groups to be assigned a task such as painting, working in the yard, etc. Luckily for Circle K, we were assigned to paint the front office with a fresh coat of white paint. Afterwards, we moved on to decorating the playground with colorful and fun activities, like painting a color wheel and a four square box. Around noon, lunch was in session, courtesy of Cardenas donating burritos. Before we knew it, it was back to work in the front office, moving furniture and binders back in their original positions. With the finishing details added and the place cleaned up, it was all set for the faculty members to put it back in use. After such strenuous activities, we all decided to let our inner child loose on the jungle gym where a relay race was conducted. Circle K works hard and plays hard. Break time was over and before we knew it another task arose before us. The creative and artistic minds of Circle K left a mark on the playground with the various activities we painted on the playground such as “Walk the Line,” which is a series of colliding and interweaving lines that must be followed until the end. Slowly one by one, volunteering groups finished their tasks and packed up until Circle K was the last group left. All good things must come to end, but only after an epic game of Ninja and painting several layers of protective paint over colorful and original murals on the walls of the playground. The community service project ended with rides back to Riverside, where bonding conversations took place and members got to know each other even more. Overall, the Kingsley Elementary School Makeover was filled with hours of community service with bright paintings and creativity, and a chance to get our Kiwanis family better acquainted with Circle K.

On most Saturdays people sleep in or spend their day lounging around. In circle K, many members spend their Saturdays doing service and helping the community. Riverside’s Kiwanis One Day was a joyous event that included Uptown Kiwanis, key clubbers and your very own UCR Circle K. The morning started out with an introduction of the event which was that our job was to paint and clean up graffiti that had been tagged on the one hundred year old bridge. Each of us was given paint and paint brushes, then we set out to clean-up! During the event I got to talk to one of the Kiwanian’s. He told me he was firefighter and he told me that he was a part of a special search and rescue unit. He told me that his unit was at the world trade center during the 9/11 attacks. The Kiwanian was very welcoming and gave me some advice on the future ahead. Many of the kiwanians come from very diverse backgrounds and are great to talk to! I really enjoyed my talk with him and I hope to work with him again. Throughout the event we made our clean-up more fun by telling jokes and playing music. We had fun while doing work and that’s what made this event fun for me. Still all of us got to do our part for the city of riverside. We got to meet wonderful Kiwanians and we got to enjoy the company of fellow circle K’ers. I myself got to meet a fellow new member Elizabeth Acosta who is a 4th year at UCR. She told that she was very happy to join CKI and hopes to come out to more events! Yes we did get paint on ourselves, but it shows that we put our hearts into service! So if you got nothing to do on a Saturday morning, come on out to one of our many service projects! See you at the next one!

This past Weekend of Awesomeness Weekend (WAW) was hosted by UNLV (Univserity of Nevada, Las Vegas). If you have not gone to a WAW weekend--especially one in Vegas-- I highly encourage you to do so! Not only do you get to do service and learn in workshops, but you also get to meet new people and of course walk the strip! It hardly feels like working at all when you’re having so much fun. And you get hours for it! So on Friday night, we departed from Riverside, heading to UNLV for their Relay for Life. Fraternities, sororities, and many other organizations had booths for food and drinks and tents set up as it was an overnight event. There was even a monster-pong tournament (for fundraising!). And because “Cancer never sleeps,” neither did we; we had at least one person from Circle K walk the track holding UNLV’s flag at all time. Of course we switched off from time to time. It was an interesting experience for me as I never pulled an all nighter before; I would usually try to go to bed before sunrise. After Relay for Life, we headed straight to Lake Mead for Kiwanis One Day. It was great seeing K-fam coming together and doing our part-- even if it meant having to put up with the sun breathing fire down on us. We were all broken up into groups--going off with key clubbers and Kiwanians, getting to know each other as we picked up trash. Some of us even walked all the way down to the lake to skip rocks. By the time it was lunch, we were all exhausted; no sleep, no shower. But, with our Circle K spirit (and smell-hehe), we picked ourselves up and headed on over to Nevada State College to help with their Heritage Festival by selling ice cold water, which turned out very well. Gotta stay hydrated in this heat! Finally, thanks to some wonderful Circle K-ers from UNLV, we were able to wash off seventeen hours of whatever stuck to our bodies and rest up for more service and fun! After a long day and a few hours of shut-eye, we treated ourselves to Fukuburger and desserts at Serendipity! What’s better than sitting around with amazing Circle K-ers and eating and joking around? Definitely the best part of the trip. But what was different than the other WAW weekends in Vegas was that we didn’t get to walk the strip. It was too warm and everyone practically had sugar crash. Instead, we went back to Brandon, Kevin, and Michael’s house (thank you for opening up your home to us!) to rest up. The next morning, we opened our eyes and were greeted by the sound of bacon and eggs sizzling and the smell of freshly made pancakes. Joining together in the living room we all enjoyed our morning breakfast with a side of Legend of Korra (um, team Makorra) while the presidents from each club had their President Council Meeting. With only a few hours left before the end of WAW, we ended the weekend with a workshop on team building/communication and Divisional Council Meeting. This was one of the most interesting WAW I have been to particularly because it was super hot. But that didn’t stop us! Circle K is unstoppable! Thank you to UNLV and thank you to Crista and Justin for driving us! Hope to see you all at the next WAW.

She is known as the Kiwanis Photographer and our Kiwanis Advisor. As our Kiwanis Mama, she love us and love all kids. Her life is tough and exhilarating for all the things she does as Kiwanian. She goes to Kiwanis Luncheon, which is like a general meeting for them. She takes pictures during the meeting and is always excited to see us there for their luncheon. Every other week, She does “Meals on Wheels on Friday. She also tries her best to come to general meetings, but the parking is so hard to find. There are many events she goes to. She says that there is a basketball tournament that happen once a year. All proceeds form the tournament go toward the purchasing of new equipment. The most amazing event that she participates in is during the month of December. During that time, they hold their meetings at Longfellow Elementary School. They discuss of the children that have done exceptionally well in school and achieve the most. They then have a Santa Clause give out gifts to those students for their awesome achievement. The gifts can be in the range of gift cards to toys to tickets to Disneyland. She enjoys what she does and hopes to tell others of her stories. :)

This place is a rare find in Riverside. It is far from the infamous fast food hole in the wall places that are normally raved about in this area! I first heard of this place from an old professor of mine who has been going here for years. Their sandwiches are delicious with an assortment of breads and drinks to go along with your meal. I always get a turkey sandwich on focaccia bread with fruit as my side. The focaccia bread is flavorful and soft. The veggies in my sandwich were crisp and fresh. Overall, very very delicious and doesn't leave me feeling guilty afterwards. I did try their pasta salad which was okay, I found the pasta to be overcooked. But their fruit is always remarkably fresh and has never failed. My favorite and a must try is the Tres Leches Cake, which is a butter cake, soaked in three kinds of milk: evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream. I can say with confidence that this is one of the best cake I have ever had. The location itself is a little tricky because it is difficult to spot from the parking lot, but once you find it, you'll see the "home-y" style decorations. The service is great; the workers have never treated me poorly and this is definitely, one of my favorite places to eat.

A fantastic burger joint where freshness and made-to-order = high quality & tasty burgers. The freshness and quality of the natural ingredients used here are top notch. You can taste the high quality of everything in every delicious bite. The second you walk in, you are greeted by the owner Mo. And I can attest that he is probably one of the nicest people you have ever met. Overall your experience here may be a bit pricier than by stopping somewhere else but I can personally vouch for the fact that every penny is well spent. And the best part is you can customize your very own burger the way you should be able to! Start by choosing your meat: Choose from the 3 oz Slider size, 6 oz single, or 12 oz Double burger patty. The ordinary single patties are huge! I made the mistake of ordering a double on my first visit and the burger alone was enough to put me under the table. The meat is fresh, never frozen, high quality 100% angus chuck which results in very tasty and juicy burgers. You can choose from a White Kaiser or Wheat Grain bun and you'd win with either. Both are toasted perfectly and taste delicious. The Kaiser bun retains its fluffiness even after being toasted and the Wheat Grain bun gets a thumb up for being a healthy wheat option that is tasty and doesn't taste like dry sawdust. The selection of cheese is commendable seeing as how you won't find several of these elsewhere such as the Bleu Crumble, Dolce Provolone, & Smoked Gouda. There are a myriad of sauces to choose from. Our favorites being: Garlic Herb Mayo, Chipotle Mayo, Sweet Chili, & Cajun Buffalo. And to top it all off (Pun fully intended), there are a number of toppings which you can add at no additional charge! Lettuce, Tomato, Pickles, Green Olives, Fresh Onions, Grilled Onions, Grilled Jalapenos, Grilled Mushrooms!!! Pick a few; pick them all, it won't affect your bill! :-) There are also a few premium toppings which will set you back a little extra at 99 cents a pop including: Bacon, Avocado, Hummus, or Grilled Pineapple. Be sure to add a side of fries to your order which are like thicker In-n-Out fries. Freshly cut and cooked every day.

We <3 you CKI! =]

These past four years in Circle K have been amazing. Having the opportunity to serve with so many service-oriented individuals has really made me enjoy my time here at UC Riverside. I will really miss a lot of the friends I have made here. Circle K isn’t just a club, it’s a family. And while that phrase has been used to death, I truly mean it. The difference that this club has made on our community and the difference our club has created on an individual basis is bar none. I hope that each and every one of you can have just as an amazing (if not more amazing) experience in Circle K than I have had the privilege of having. When attending events, be social, meet new people, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone to make an impact. Be the change you want to see in the world! Thanks for an amazing college experience Circle K International! I’ve truly enjoyed it!

These past four years being a part of Circle k has been a blast. I met so many great, genuine people that have a passion to make a difference in their community. Entering college, as a freshman, I was not very social and super quiet, but because I joined circle k I was able to become more sociable and in many ways break out of my shell. I was fortunate enough to attain officer positions, my second year I was appointed historian, my third year I was elected Treasurer, and my last year I was appointed District Kiwanis Family Chair. These positions came with their challenges but were still very enjoyable. I had so many circle K memories that I will take with me. I did so many things I did not expect to do. I learned how to talk to people and I even talked in front of 800 people at district convention, which I never would have imaged. Therefore, thank you Circle k for making college such a wonderful experience, I will truly miss it.

My time here at UCR has been somewhat crazy. There were ups and downs from the very beginning to very end. I first started attending Circle K meetings during my second year here because of a certain member who encouraged me to go. I did not become a member until my third year, and sadly enough I’m graduating a year early, so I won’t be staying for as long as I would like to have. The girl who got me to join Circle K is none other than Nancy Antuna and after a good amount of time, we started dating and I’m glad that she got me to join the meetings. I’m not gonna lie, I had a lot of fun going to the meetings and doing service whenever I can. If I had the chance to redo anything, I would of join Circle K during my first year of school. I’ve made a lot of good friends here, and you can’t get rid of me that easily. So you can expect me to make guest visits to future meetings. This is not the end, just the start of a new beginning.

Circle K International has been a part of my life for four years. I joined Circle K my freshmen year fall quarter, 2008. I almost did not join because at Bear Facts tabling, which is now called Highlander Expo, people were not so friendly and I never got those emails they promised. The only reason I heard it was through the emails my sister got. My first Circle K meeting was great because everyone was so excited and passionate about there jobs and the club. Their passion inspired me to stick with this club. Which was one of the best decisions ever. If you are doubting whether to stay or go and try another club don’t Circle K offers everything and if you get involved in a leadership position it will give you a even greater experience because it will teach you how to manage your time, public speaking, etc. I became secretary my first year going into my second year, Membership Development and Education Chair my second year going into my third year, and District Membership Development and Education Chair my last year. I gained something new from each position which allowed me to develop my leadership style and has allowed me to prosper. The quality and the quantity of service projects also allows you to connect with the community as well as different cities through out the California, Nevada, and Hawaii District. From helping the homeless to helping children with their homework has given me awareness for those in need. In Circle K you meet some of the most genuine good hearted people from all over the district and the club level. Circle K truly embodies the three tenants of service, leadership, and fellowship. This organization has been a great addition to my life and will now remain a great memory. "I remember going to orientation, seeing the Circle K booth and thinking 'Oh okay that's like Key Club. Cool, but why would I want to do community service in college?' I decided to check out a meeting anyways once my fall quarter started and everyone was too friendly! I had to go to more and pretty soon I was hooked. I joined Circle K my first year and even today, I still think it's the best student organization at UCR. It's provided me with tons of things to do whenever I was bored and even when I needed to procrastinate. Most importantly, it's provided me with great friends, lessons, and experiences I'll always remember. Thanks Circle K! for everything."
