The Brief
New Civic Space An observation and investigation into the space in which people can meet, gather, interact, socialise and feel secure. “Civic space is the political, legislative, social, and economic environment which enables citizens to come together, share their interests and concerns and act individually and collectively to influence and shape their societies. Civic space enables people to pursue multiple, at times competing, points of view” (Civic Space Watch 2018).

All three sites have various local amenities that create well serviced green spaces which add to the local community is a positive manor. All three sites allow people free access to green spaces in which they can socialise, exercise and relax. While all of these types of spaces are important for many reasons, the first two sites seem to be better served areas already. For this reason this project will look to improve Colwick Country Park in terms of its amenities, to ensure that more people can enjoy the site with more facilities.

Proposed Project
Colwick Country Park has an existing activity centre that is for the use of children and teenagers. Set back from both of the lakes it does not utilise the location being surrounded by water. While the small lake is used for open water swimming this is limited and exclusively for organised groups. This project will therefore look to have a direct link with the lake to create an intervention that utilises the expansive nature of the lake. The creation of a public space, that can be used by all of the community, is crucial for this intervention as it is situated in an existing civic space.
