Hello Ladies, Welcome to our third Ladies Who Rock event raising funds for The Prince’s Trust. This year we have brought the event to The Biscuit Factory, where this fabulous new function suite has been creatively designed and built to cater for events such as ours. We have been utterly overwhelmed by the response and support from all of you, as this event was practically sold out within a matter of weeks from the day the tickets were released for sale. This year, like the previous two years, is set to be another fabulous day packed with great entertainment and a few surprises, and of course good food, great wine and our famous Ladies Who Rock goodie bag. We are delighted that Barbour will be supporting us for the third year, and we are indeed overwhelmed by their continuous generosity towards our charity work. Jules B is a welcome addition to our fashion section of the day and we are very much looking forward to seeing some very special frocks on the catwalk. Multi award winning hairdresser Hooker & Young and their team have been busy making their very own hair creations with our fabulous models supplied by Tyne Tees Models and Fenwick’s own talented make up artists have kindly donated their time to add the finishing touches! Berry’s, THE Jewellers of Newcastle, will be supporting us for a third year running as well with a fabulous diamond bracelet for our amazing raffle. Taking us through the day, again for the third year, is our MC Mr Matt Lee Alliston who, with his huge personality, keeps all of us thoroughly entertained whilst reminding us of the great charity whose amazing work we are all here to support. Yet again I am indebted to the numerous individuals and organisations, who have contributed time and resources to make this day possible. I am very mindful that without goodwill and benevolence towards steadfast charitable causes such as The Prince’s Trust, this region would be a more perilous place for our youth. Last, but not least, I thank MY Ladies - the ladies on the committee, who well and truly rock! They work tirelessly behind the scenes over the course of the year to help make this day a special one for all of you, who love to rock in style for a worthwhile cause!

SINCE 1984

OUR MASTER OF CEREMONIES Matt Lee-Alliston Matt is thrilled to be back with the Ladies Who Rock! Matt has worked with the likes of Smokey Robinson and Gladys Knight and now he is looking forward to working with The Ladies Who Rock! Matt, owner of The Panto Company based in Northumberland has been performing since the tender age of six. As a very young man he appeared on the world famous Palladium stage in The Pirates of Penzance and the musical Buddy, working with household names such as Wayne Sleep and Dora Bryan. After recording with Riverside Studios in Germany, Matt became Children’s Production Manager for the Rank Group UK where he wrote and performed alongside Noel Edmonds, Bobby Davro, Marty Wilde, Alvin Stardust and the Bay City Rollers. In 1998 Matt became Director of Entertainment USA, where the performers were legendary. Gladys Knight, Kool and the Gang, Smokey Robinson and Ben E King were all performers in Matt’s lavish shows. He returned to the UK to put down roots for his young family and together with his wife started their company with a grant from The Prince’s Trust. The company, which is part of The Stage and Production House, produces shows across the UK for companies such as Center Parcs, MacDonald Hotels, Village Hotels and the Copthorne chain. Most recently, they have completed a 40 city tour of China with a new adaptation of The Little Mermaid and also created new sales and entertainment teams for Ripley’s Believe it or not! London, and all before bedtime! Ladies Who Rock are privileged to have Matt as Master of Ceremonies for this rocking good day.

SPECIAL GUEST: JO CAULFIELD Best-known for her legendary one-woman shows, Jo Caulfield is “one of the finest female comics at work” (The Observer) and has recently been nominated as “the best female Stand-Up in the country” (Chortle.co.uk). She is also Graham Norton’s head writer. “She is, quite simply, a damn funny woman.” (The Scotsman) Jo was born in Wales to Irish parents and brought up in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. She grew up believing the East Midlands was her oyster. At 17 Jo left home and moved to London to sing and play drums in a Rockabilly band. This was an unusual decision as Jo can neither sing nor play drums. Jo spent many years honing her skills as a waitress and was frequently fired for arguing with customers. She also worked in retail and was a shop manager before being fired for arguing with customers. She then set up her own business selling 50s vintage clothing, but soon fired herself for arguing with the boss. Jo Caulfield has come a long way since her first open spot 12 years ago. To misquote the Human League, Jo was working as a waitress in an Italian Restaurant when she found herself drunkenly entering the weekly open mic competition at The Comedy Café in East London. Although she hadn’t prepared anything and could hardly stand, let alone speak, Jo won the competition and was asked back for a 10 minute booking the following week.

Many of the points Jo Caulfield makes about the human condition would have sociologists stroking their beards in admiration, but her audience tend to be laughing too much to notice. Do not miss her. (The Times)

After being advised that regular compering was one of the best ways to improve as a comic Jo saved her ‘waitressing tips’, bought a cheap microphone and a small amplifier and opened her own comedy club in the basement bar of The White Horse in Hampstead. It was getting up on stage at her own club every week for five years that gave Jo her ability for bantering with the audience and improvising on their comments. As one critic put it, “It’s an amazing knack. Caulfield seamlessly weaves in and out of material and audience banter”.

THE COMMITTEE Meet the women behind the committee that make Ladies who Rock a day to remember, all in the name of WORTHWHILE STYLE.

10.

Alison Morgan – Prince’s Trust Patron and Ladies Who Rock Founder Throughout my business career success has been determined through motivation and inspiration. Motivation is the force, which determines our behaviour, and gives us incentive and a reason to act. Inspiration is the creative thought which is the stimulus. As a result of my passion, determination and formative influences, I have been fortunate to motivate and be motivated, inspire and be inspired. As a result, my life is productive, positive and fulfilled. I have had the pleasure to see other people grow in confidence, principle and purpose and go on to succeed in their own right. And so when The Prince’s Trust honoured me by seeking my patronage and allowing me to be the first female patron in the North East of England, I was determined to utilise my business and personal qualities to support The Trust wholeheartedly. Life can be demanding, challenging and complex whatever your age but for some young people in our region, the path you walk only leads downhill. I have seen what this can do to young people and how with the help of The Trust they can be supported to turn around, walk tall, and step by step move in the right direction.

Alex Morris – Ladies Who Rock Creative and Communication Director When I was asked to sit on the committee for this organisation, I did not hesitate even for one second in accepting what I see as an absolute privilege. I began my career as a very young woman and I know that I would have not been able to start, never mind carry on, if it wasn’t for the practical help and emotional support of particular individuals, Alison Morgan being one of these people. I know I was fortunate in having access to such contacts but not everyone is. Many young people have the skills and determination to succeed yet they lack the means, others lack the confidence as they are not surrounded by the sort of environment that can nurture and encourage their aspirations. I can only see myself as extremely fortunate for having had access to all of these. Working on making Ladies Who Rock a bigger and better event year on year, raising valuable funds for The Prince’s Trust, is a little something I can do to impact someone else’s life, the way mine has been through the years. It’s my way to ‘Pay It Forward’.

11.

Ann Crombie – Prince’s Trust Mentor On retiring from the fashion industry after 30 years of retailing, manufacturing and consulting I was approached by The Prince’s Trust to join their team of mentors. Only then did I discover what an important and diverse role The Prince’s Trust has to play in the future of so many young people and I feel honoured to have been able to play a small part in some of their progress. Without The Prince’s Trust so many young people would not have been given the opportunity and support or had the confidence to make it in their chosen field, particularly in the unsettled financial climate that we live in. I am therefore delighted to be part of the new fundraising committee which I am sure will reach its set goals with your support.

Zoe Mulvenna – Fundraising Manager for The Prince’s Trust It is my great privilege to work for The Prince’s Trust. During my time at The Trust, I have had the opportunity to work with so many inspiring people, from the amazing young people we support, to our fabulous supporters, staff and volunteers, who make it all possible. One such group of fabulous and extremely glamorous supporters I have had the great pleasure of working with, is the Ladies Who Rock committee. They are the driving force behind this event and fantastic to work with, full of energy, ideas and enthusiasm. It has been a joy to watch the Ladies Who Rock event go from strength to strength over the past few years. All net proceeds raised from Ladies Who Rock are used to support disadvantaged young people in the North East. Many of the young people The Prince’s Trust helps are in or leaving care, facing issues such as homelessness or mental health problems or have been in trouble with the law. The Prince’s Trust programmes are designed to give those young people the practical and financial support needed to stabilise their lives. Last year The Prince’s Trust supported just under 4,000 young people in this region alone. Without the support of the Ladies Who Rock committee, those who attend the event, sponsor the event and donate prizes to be used in our auction, this would not be possible. Your support does truly make a difference to the lives of young people right here in the North East. Ladies (and gents) you really do rock!

12.

Helen Roseberry – Ladies Who Rock Promoter and overall massive Supporter When I was asked to come on board The Ladies who Rock committee to raise funds in aid of The Prince’s Trust, it made me stop and evaluate my start in life and I know how lucky I have been, to have had love, stability and guidance throughout my whole life. I was always taught to apply myself in education, work hard, and respect others at all times, be confident and believe in myself, and when you get knocked back, dust yourself down and get up and try again. Not everyone has been as fortunate as me. The Trust is able to offer this to young people, to enable them to fulfil their full potential through opportunities to develop confidence, learn new skills, get into work and start businesses. The Prince’s Trust targets those not in education, employment or training and those in or leaving care. Our support to The Prince’s Trust offers young people a chance in life. And that is something I am extremely proud to be part of.

Lynn Bushell – Ladies Who Rock Business Relationship Manager Throughout my chosen career I have come into contact with people of all ages, abilities and from all walks of life. Oftentimes our paths have crossed because they have been disadvantaged by ill health, developmental ability or by the narrow beliefs and attitudes of society. This has been my working life and my passion for the last 32 years. More recently I made a big decision to stray from that very well-trodden path and was fortunate to come into contact with an amazing group of women with varying interests, ages and backgrounds but with a common goal. Despite our diversity, we all feel passionately about the North East, its culture and its future and wanted to make a difference. Finding your strengths, abilities and a valued place in society is a huge task for everyone and one, which is epitomised by the work of The Prince’s Trust. They need help from likeminded constructive people to make that difference. And so, in partnership with The Prince’s Trust, I have worked together with the Ladies Who Rock team to support the young people of the North East through the staging and proceeds of Ladies Who Rock. Together we believe we are Ladies Who not only Rock but will also make a difference to the future of the North East.

THE RUBY DOLLS

The Dolls are: Jessica Sedler, Susanna Fiore, Rebecca Shanks, Tara Siddall, and Jenny Grove (currently away). In four years they have performed four fulllength shows: Ein Abend Mit Ruby (Soho Theatre, Jermyn Street Theatre 2010) Rubies In The Attic (Riverside Studios, Edinburgh Festival 2012: Assembly Roxy), Rubies In The Smoke (St. James Theatre, 2013) and Fabulous Creatures (Edinburgh Festival 2014).

Together, The Ruby Dolls have sung for Ed Miliband, shared a stage with Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet and been introduced by Stephen Fry. They’ve appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, BBC Radio 3’s The Verb, and BBC Scotland’s Festival Culture Cafe. They have spent the summer premiering Fabulous Creatures - a brand new musical by Abigail and Dominic Burdess with music by their Musical Director Benjamin Cox - at the world’s biggest arts festival: The Edinburgh Festival.

“ “ “

“ “ “

The Ruby Dolls are theatre-makers, singers, cabaretlovers and storytellers. Five years ago, they formed their now critically acclaimed, multi-disciplinary, collaborative theatre company. Their work is strongly influenced by cabaret. Both the intimacy of it: they play fast and loose with the idea of the “fourth wall so that they can contact an audience more directly to share our stories; and the variety of it: they infuse their work with dance, puppetry, clowning and their trademark close part harmony song.

M Glorious‌ Performances are stunning‌ brilliant original songs. A triumph. (Broadway Baby).

Unique Inspired and altogether uplifting. (The List)

So original that if you can catch it you must. (The Spectator)

The Prince’s Trust helps disadvantaged young people into work, education and training.

Today, another vulnerable young person in the UK feels hopeless and without direction, because no one’s ever believed in them. However you choose to support us, your help will give a young person the chance for a better future.

YOUNG AMBASSADOR CASE STUDY Tess’ Story Let down by those who should have protected her, at the age of just 16, Tess suffered from low selfesteem. Growing up in an isolated environment and the victim of abuse, she’d become very withdrawn and was trying to hide behind the shadows. Her life was in disarray and she was unable to concentrate or motivate herself; instead she sought solace in alcohol, found herself spiralling out of control and stuck in an abusive relationship, with nowhere to turn. At only 17, she was forced to drop out of college as she was rarely able to attend; having to stay at home and help look after her family who were in crisis. Tess said her outlook on life was, “poor,” and she was really unsure about what her future would bring. She was scared of agencies brought in to help but desperate to get out of the situation she was in. Tess first got involved with The Prince’s Trust in May 2013 when she joined the Team programme, delivered by Washington Fire Brigade, following a recommendation by a friend. Tess found the programme exactly what she needed in terms of helping her build confidence. She says, “I felt really supported and encouraged, I also learnt that we (the Team) were all there for different reasons, and no one judged anyone else, we all felt included; almost like a little family.” Tess found the strength to move out of home and she and her sister sourced their own accommodation, which, she says, “made me feel safe for the first time in a long time.”

Moving forward to February 2014, Tess heard about the Get Started with Dance programme and, having used dance as an escape, she felt compelled to get involved. Tess immediately shone. She recalls how happy she felt to be around dancers in an inspirational venue, such as Dance City. Again, she says that The Prince’s Trust has helped her develop as a person, adding, “I have built team work skills, I feel independent and my future is much brighter, because of the people at The Prince’s Trust who have supported me and shown me that I can be somebody.” Struck by Tess’s dedication and talent, she was encouraged by staff at Dance City to audition for a place on the Btec course. Tess states that, “The Prince’s Trust helped me feel worth something and go for my dream. I auditioned at Gateshead College to start my Btec in September; being told I had got a place was amazing. It was nice to have people feel proud of me.” Tess has recently started Gateshead College as a Btec student. Her dream is to be a choreographer, travelling the world and learning different genres of dance on the way. She has her sights set high and hopes to apply to Bath Spa University to study dance at degree level, something she has been hoping to do since she took up an interest in dance.

BLISTERED MOLLY Blistered Molly is a female fronted rock group from Newcastle who have performed on the same Festival bill as Toploader and many other established artists. They combine strong vocals and complex harmonies to take on classic rock songs by the likes of The Rolling Stones and many other rock artists, in addition to writing and performing their own original material. Having won the runners up prize in MTV’s 2012 Open Mic UK national singing competition and performed at the O2 stadium in front of thousands of people, Blistered Molly are well versed performers and are in the midst of recording their debut album whilst performing at various venues across the North East. Blistered Molly, made up of Rachel Miller, Ashleigh Humble and Jessica Martin, beat off competition from thousands of hopefuls at MTV’s Open Mic auditions, impressing judges with their version of a rock classic by The Foo Fighters. Now with a full backing band made up from the cream of local talented musicians, the girls are ready to rock n roll and have a number of gigs and festivals lined up for the next year. They’ve built up a great following here in the North East since forming in 2013 and now nationwide, since the Open Mic competition, which gave them the opportunity to showcase their unique sound to an impressive audience.
