LIVING ROOM

Alexia Asgari is a Cornell Introductory Photography student, specializing in portraiture. Her work uses the human body as a compositional tool, while simultaneously expressing a story. She begins the work by developing characters and a setting. She then enlists her friends to be dressed and photographed by her, as she choreographs their moves, transforming them into the imagined persona. In her collection, “Living Room, Asgari expresses her experience in quarantine abstractly, conveying isolation through a wilderness setting. Her characters interact with furniture placed in the forest. The collection is very personal, not only including close friends, but also occasionally featuring herself. Her choice to incorporate her grandfather’s paintings nod to her personal exposure to art at a young age. She uses the current climate and restrictions of isolation to inspire her collection and dictate the method she photographs her portraits. She takes inspiration from portrait photographers such as Giovanna Silva and Steven Meisel who prioritize the dynamic between people and their environment.
