allows more control over the eff ct, and painting repeatedly over the same area produces progressively darker colors, much like coloring with a marker. Coloring with black is like multiplying by 0: You’ll get black. Coloring with white is like multiplying with 1: You’ll get the same color in return. Color Burn A darker color darkens and saturates the base layer when you use Color Burn mode. It darkens by increasing contrast. Blending with white on either the base or application produces no eff ct. Linear Burn If you want to darken your work, use Linear Burn. It does its thing by decreasing the brightness of the base layer, which tints and aff cts white. Even light colors subtract from the base layer. Lighten The opposite of Darken, the base colors that are darker than the applied color are lightened. However, colors that are lighter than the applied color stay the same when you use Lighten mode. Screen Screen is the opposite of Multiply; the end result is always lighter with Screen mode. It looks at each channel’s color information and multiplies the inverse of the application and base colors. Painting with black gives no eff ct, but even an almost-black color lightens the base. Color Dodge Another lightening eff ct, Color Dodge infuses the base with the applied colors and brightens the base. The opposite eff ct of Color Burn, this lightens by decreasing contrast. As you can see in Figure 7.11, the eff cts of Color Dodge as a brush and applied as a Layer Mode are quite diffe ent. Linear Dodge Similar to Screen mode, Linear Dodge brightens the base to reflect the application color. It is a bit harsher than Screen, and it tends to go to white faster. Figure 7.11 Color Dodge.
