Get Around the Interface
Also on the Status bar, you can view any document errors in the preflight notification, or click the arrow to view a menu for opening the Preflight panel or defining profiles. (Read about preflight in Chapter 17.) Finally, click Open to reveal a menu where you can choose other versions of the file, or you can locate the file in your system by choosing Reveal In Explorer (Windows) or Reveal In Finder (Mac). If you’re working with a new file that hasn’t been saved, the tooltip reads Never Saved, and the menu options are unavailable.
Take a Shortcut (Menu) Unlike the menus that appear at the top of your screen, contextsensitive, or shortcut, menus display commands related to the active tool or selection. For example, right-click a graphic frame to choose from a variety of fitting, content, and transform commands. When you right-click a text frame to display the shortcut menu, you’ll reveal text and text frame options in addition to the commands shown for a graphic frame.
Organize Your Efforts with Panels Modify, monitor, and manage your work in the panels at the right of the program window. The panel configuration changes according to the selected workspace. Choose Window and select other panels to open them as well or to close existing panels. Each panel includes a menu, accessible by clicking the Menu icon at the upper-right edge. Most panels include a toolbar along the bottom (see Figure 1-4).
Experiment with Panel Behaviors Panels behave in the same ways, along with sharing common features. The best way to learn about panels and how they function is through experimentation. Like other CS4 programs, the InDesign panels may be docked, grouped, moved, and so on. Dock Panels for Safekeeping By default, panels are docked at the right of the program window, meaning they are stationary. Dock or undock a panel by dragging its tab. For a panel group (several panels tabbed together) drag from the title bar, the empty bar above the tabs. To prevent a panel or panel group from docking, press CTRL while moving it.
