LA SAGRADA FAMILIA Place of Worship Company: Arup - Faรงade Engineering.

Project: La Sagrada Familia is a church designed by Antoni Gaudi. Its construction started in 1883 and is due for completion in 2026. One of the parts that the Faรงade team of Arup was asked to assess is the Cross.

Contribution: I carried out a preliminary thermal assessment to identify the U-values achievable by the glazed and opaque areas of the Cross of the Sagrada Familia. In addition, I carried out a condensation risk assessment for each month of the year.

OMAN BOTANIC GARDEN Arts and Culture Company: Arup - Façade Engineering.

Project: The Oman Botanic Gardens celebrate the country’s botanic diversity and is located in Oman.

A cable-car was designed to assist with the transportation between three buildings.

Contribution: Alexandra carried out a solar radiation assessment on the glazed surfaces of the gondolas of the cable cars with Arup Solar and prepared a brief report.

Software: Autodesk AutoCAD, Arup Solar, Rhino, Grasshopper.

ELIZABETH HOUSE Retail Company: Arup - Faรงade Engineering.

Project: Elizabeth House is a redevelopment located in London, UK. Arup Facades has been assigned to conduct a thermal evaluation at the soffit of the building.

Contribution: Alexandra carried out the thermal assessment for several iterations of the build-up of the soffit and for several details of the mega-columns penetrating the soffit.

HIGH SPEED 2 Rail Station Company: Arup - Environmental Services Engineering.

Project: High Speed 2 is a high-speed railway in the United Kingdom, which will directly connect London, Birmingham, the East Midlands, Leeds and Manchester.

Contribution: I worked on the Euston Station Building focusing on the blue roof of the entire station and the green roof of the North Area. I am involved in Rainwater Drainage, Harvesting, Track Drainage and the Fire Protection Systems. I have taken part in the design strategy processes, realised calculations, produced schematics and mark-ups and prepared 2D/3D diagrams and graphics for reports.

HEATHROW TERMINAL 5X Aviation Company: Arup - Environmental Services Engineering.

Project: Heathrow Expansion undertakes the expansion of terminal 5, aiming at a world-class sustainable airport and delivering innovation in passenger service.

Contribution: I am involved in the West Campus part of the explansion and more specifically the attenuation of the roof and the rainwater harvesting. I have produced calculations, drawings, sketches and 3D graphics for reports.

Software: Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit, Bluebeam Revu, Adobe Photoshop.

BAY MOSQUE Place of Worship Company: Mangera Yvars Architects - Architecture.

Project: Bay Mosque is a mosque in the Middle East designed by Mangera Yvars Architects.

Contribution: I was involved in the architectural and technical design process for RIBA Stage 2 and Stage 3.

I additionally created visualisations in 2D for the Minaret and the Mosque interior.

Software: Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk 3Ds Max, Adobe Photoshop.

PLA DE MARC Residential Company: Mangera Yvars Architects - Architecture.

Project: Pla de Marc is a complex of 15 villas in Barcelona, Spain, designed by Mangera Yvars Architects.

Contribution: My involvement focused on the concept design of the mechanical and electrical installations of the villas.

I also took part in the visualisation process of the MEP systems in 2D for all 15 villas.

Software: Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk 3Ds Max, Adobe Photoshop.

STUDENT PROJECTS

KINETIC FACADE Comparison between optimised static and kinetic shading devices, for faรงades of office buildings in Mediterranean Climate, which regulate the indoor temperature.

Research Analysis Institution: The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment (UCL).

Project: This report investigated optimisation strategies for the energy efficiency of static and adaptive facades through a case study. The latter concluded that both the static and the kinetic shading devices led to a reduction of at least a third of the initial energy consumption when shading is absent or not applied. Furthermore, the kinetic shading device performed better in terms of energy efficiency than the static device.

SOLAR DESIGN Residential Institution: The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment (UCL).

Project: This project consisted of a residential building with a nursery space in Tanzania. The site is part of a complex of schools and is surrounded by green space. To design the residence, several environmental aspects were researched, such as the yearly local temperature, the relative humidity, the wind direction, noise levels, pollution, the solar path, the occupancy and the existing landscape. The architectural concept focused on the connection between private and public space, while the environmental strategy focused on the solar impact. To regulate the temperature in such a warm location, the sun path, the materials, the ventilation and the vegetation needed to be taken into account.

NATURAL AND MECHANICAL VENTILATION Culture and Retail Institution: The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment (UCL).

Project: This project consisted of a new theatre at the Victoria Embankment Garden. The environmental aspects studied for this project were the yearly local temperature, the relative humidity, the wind direction, the noise levels, the pollution, the solar path, the occupancy, the existing landscape and the views. The architectural concept is influenced by the “box in a box” philosophy. The auditorium was the “box” that was enclosed in the rest of the building, which hosted auxiliary and retail spaces. The ventilation strategy was based on the wind direction and a cooling void between the ground and the first floor. Small openings on the floor and the ceiling of the auditorium and openings on the roof of the building were designed so as to regulate the temperature and reduce the CO2 levels.

PRISON AND CITY: REINTEGRATION OF THE “KORYDALLOS� PRISON IN ATHENS, GREECE Culture and Landscape Institution: Department of Architecture, School of Engineering, University of Patras.

Project: This project studies the creation of a rehabilitation centre for underage ex-offenders to be situated in the city of Athens, where the prison of Korydallos is currently located. The rehabilitation centre preserved the memories of the city prison and attempts to transform the memory into something positive, through education, interaction and solidarity. The project was composed of a park and two alleys, connecting the site with the city, and hosted several activities, as vwell as workshops, where the ex-offenders learn new skills. A central square, additionally, invited locals and other visitors to interact with the ex-offenders/ students.

PLATOS ACADEMY REDEVELOPMENT AND NEW ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM Culture and Landscape Institution: Department of Architecture, School of Engineering, University of Patras.

Project: This proposal consisted of the configuration of a park and the design of a new Archaeological Museum. The existing park contains ancient monuments that are open to the public. The locals cherish this park and wish for more people to be involved in the activities that take place there.

For this reason, the Museum was designed as part of the park. The shape of the building is part of the new path that was designed to guide the visitors around the park and help them understand the history of the area and the philosophy of the locals.

EXPERIMENTAL HIGH-SCHOOL IN PATRA Education Institution: Department of Architecture, School of Engineering, University of Patras.

Project: This experimental high-school was located in an urban area, surrounded mainly by residences. The aim of this project was to create an interactive space that would attract students of all ages. At the ground floor level activities like skating, and climbing were hosted and spaces like an open theatre had been created. On the way to the top floor of the building one could find a library and a cafĂŠ. The top floor hosted the classrooms, which were kinetic and could be moved on a defined grid around the floor level, which helped create interactive classes.

CONCERT HALL IN PATRA Culture and Landscape Institution: Department of Architecture, School of Engineering, University of Patras.

Project: This project consisted of a park and a concert hall. The park was designed in a way that a narrative was created. The aim was to give the visitors the opportunity to practice all their senses with a focus on sound. While in the park, the visitors experienced a range of emotions from fear or excitement to absolute silence. The concert hall was integrated in the park. The building was half-submerged in the ground and its roof was covered by part of the park. The landscape was designed respecting the existing condition.

The existing trees were mapped and the majority were kept in their beautiful chaotic order, which determined the design of the main path inside the existing surroundings of the park.

STUDENT RESIDENCE Residential Institution: Department of Architecture, School of Engineering, University of Patras.

Project: This student residence was inspired by the idea of the “tree-house”, which was reflected on the façade and the arrangement of the spaces in the building. The core of the building was designed to cover the vertical transportation needs of the building, while the apartments surround the core, similarly to the branches of a tree. The building was located on a commercial road where most buildings’ ground floors are currently hosting stores.

To connect the building with the surrounding area, the ground floor hosted a bicycle store and a garden at the back of the site. The first floor hosted public activities and it was used as the space where customers interacted with each other. The other floors consisvted of apartments. The materials were selected in such a way so as to indicate the use of each space namely glass for public spaces and concrete for private spaces.
