No es un exceso de entusiasmo ni un desborde de nuestros recuerdos —tan cercanos, tan vívidos— el que nos lleva a afirmar que, más allá de nuestras constantes idas y venidas, todavía nos queda mucho por explorar en los veinte distritos de la provincia de Caylloma. Viajes pendientes, excursiones venideras que, como todas las anteriores, rebasarán la mera contemplación del paisaje. Sentir, vivir, alimentar los sentidos y el alma. Eso es lo que queremos transmitirles con nuestros textos, aunque somos conscientes de que ninguna palabra o imagen será capaz de describir fielmente o evidenciar, en toda su intensidad, la experiencia de recorrer el cañón del Colca y el vecino valle de los Volcanes, un portento geológico en el distrito de Andagua, provincia de Castilla. Hay que estar en el valle, otear la profundidad, andar por un camino bordeado de abismo, ser parte de una fiesta patronal o compartir los rituales a la Pachamama con los collaguas y cabanas, para darse cuenta de que existen momentos que no se pueden explicar. Tienen que vivirse y nosotros confiamos que, después de tener en sus manos Colca, paraíso profundo, se animará a visitar estas tierras de altura. Esa será nuestra mejor recompensa. Eso sí, no haga caso si alguien le dice que con dos días alcanza. Quédese un poco más, siempre un poquito más.
And this is no product of excess enthusiasm or a trick played by fond memory –for our memories are so recent and so vivid. In fact, even after so many journeys through that region, there is still so much that we have not explored in those twenty districts that make up the province of Caylloma. And all of our excursions have taken us -and those to come will do the same- far beyond mere contemplation of the scenery. Experience, life and a nourishing of the senses and the soul: that is what we hope to transmit through these texts, although we are aware that no words or images can faithfully describe the full intensity of journeying through Colca Canyon and the neighboring Valley of the Volcanoes, that imposing geological phenomenon of the district of Andagua, in the province of Castilla. One must go to the valley, run one’s eyes across its depths, walk a trail on the edge of an abyss, form part of a local fiesta or share in rituals to honor Pachamama with the Collagua and Cabana peoples, in order to understand that there exist moments which cannot be described. Such moments must be lived, and we believe that, after you have held this book in your hands, you will feel encouraged to visit Colca yourself. For us, that would be sufficient reward. And ignore anyone who tries to tell you that two days are enough. Stay a little longer, just a little bit longer.
