USG ANNUAL REPORT 2016

ALEKSANDRA CZULAK PRESIDENT JEREMY BURTON VICE PRESIDENT DANIEL QIAN EXECUTIVE SECRETARY

Dear Princeton,

Letter from the President Aleksandra Czulak '17

Thank you for the incredible opportunity to serve as your USG President. It has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences I have had during my time here! I want to share two key lessons I have learned during my time on USG: 1. It is truly a community effort to make this University a safe, healthy, engaging, and enriching place for all students.

2016-2017

2. Everyone has an opinion on how they would improve Princeton, you just need to ask them and have a conversation about it. By improving Princeton, I don't just mean policy, but also think about how you feel about your student groups, your experiences in your Zee group, precepts, or classes. What are some ways to improve the Princeton student experience? I am looking forward to a semester of being a student outside of USG and keeping our USG representatives and Princeton accountable. During my time at Princeton and on USG, I have had the opportunity to see how students and USG can drive results. We've had many campus protests and petitions and with these we've seen action- University committees, school-wide email responses, and increases in resources. There is more that we can do and there is great potential and we need our community to be involved. I've been in USG for 3 years (previously the vice president and executive secretary) and I am still inspired and encouraged by the projects USG and other student groups work on to improve the Princeton student experience. There's still more we can all do together to ensure students are having the most enriching experience at Princeton. The key word here is together. It's easy to fragment ourselves as a campus by affiliations- major, eating club, student groups, etc. We're only here for 4 years and the time flies by. As we start the next semester, here's to new beginnings. One of my favorite experiences through USG is going door-to-door to meet students. I met friends my first year because I knocked on their door when I was running for USG and we are still friends today. If I haven't had the chance to meet you yet or you just want to chat, please reach out and let's grab a meal or coffee/tea! Thanks again Princeton! Thank you for sharing your experiences, concerns, and what makes you tick and appreciate this campus. Let's keep working on making Princeton a better place for all students. Best of luck to Myesha, Dan, and the 2017-2018 USG Senate! Here's to new beginnings, Aleks Czulak '17

HIGHLIGHTS 1. Fall 2016 Elections 49.8% Voter Turn-Out Only 2 positions were uncontested 2. Referenda Spring 2016: Changes to Honor Constitution and SPEAR Divestment Petition (Both of these proposed referenda did not meet the turnout threshold needed to pass. This was the first semester that new referenda rules were in place and we hosted a townhall and debriefs with the students who prepared the school-wide referenda. Fall 2016: Eating demographic referendum passed. 3. Communication Our communications team enhanced our image by tracking our reach and finding times and mediums that work best for students. The USG President sent 2-3 school-wide emails a week and we implemented more videos and photos/images to our communication strategy. 4. Collaboration with groups and testing initiatives Over the last year, USG has piloted new initiatives like the Free Pads and Tampons Project and the Dean's Date OnDuty Safety demo. By starting these new initiatives, we can collect data and make recommendations for campus policies that impact students. 5. Sharing Data & Better Metrics Working with campus offices for the Academic Calendar Survey and Bathroom Code Pilot Spring 2017 feedback to better share data and feedback from students on important campus issues.

EXECUTIVE PROJECTS Task Forces In Spring 2016, we started student task forces with the ultimate goal of bringing together key student stakeholders on important campus topics and working on solutions by students for students. Over the last year, there were three task forces: Sexual Misconduct Student Task Force, Student Group Support Task Force, Sororities & Fraternities Student Task Force, Cultural & Ethnic Studies, and Women's Leadership. Collaboration with the Inter-Club Council Over the last year, USG has collaborated with ICC for a Taste of Prospect dessert initiative for first year students, diversity initiatives, the hydration station for Princetoween, and the Dean's Demo for on-duty officers to wear visible gear. Better Information Sent to First Year Students Over the Summer Over the summer, we sent out our USG welcome video, but also included more information about USG projects and services that would be useful for first year students to know about. USG members also wrote posts for Project Welcome Mat, a resource to support first generation college students with information relevant to all students spearheaded by Bri Christophers '17 and Nicole Gonzalez '16, and we shared this resource with first year students. First year students also received a more comprehensive email about membership to the Honor Committee and Committee on Discipline. Sharing External Resources for Princeton Students Summer Playbook is an "online resource that connects students from Ivy League Schools and a few other schools over the summer to meet new and old friends, make travel plans, as well as find housing." Resoltz is a health and fitness application designed specifically for the Princeton Community. Princeton students have FREE access and it has a variety of fitness video workout plans. This free service is provided through a partnership between Princeton alumni and Campus Recreation. USG Office and Lounge Revamp In Spring 2016, we launched a revamp of the USG office space and were able to add a student lounge which is open during Frist hours. and open to all Princeton students. As a result, we have seen an increase in the number of students using our lounge, office space, and new whiteboard wall. The USG office is open every day during the school year and provides free student group printing, coffee, and tea for all students.
