Looking for a few eminent Albionians minister. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Lakeview High School in 1987. Reed currently lives in Albion with his wife, Virginia O’Dell Reed, ’46, and they have three daughters: Karen Messing, ’70, Ann Reed-Schluter, ’82, and Susan Muzquiz, ’87. Reed enjoys golfing, playing bridge, travel and walking.

Thomas G. Schwaderer, ’56 A respected leader in the Grand Rapids medical community, Thomas Schwaderer has practiced orthopaedic surgery there for 30 years. After graduating from Albion, Schwaderer went on to Wayne State University College of Medicine where he earned his M.D. in 1960. He did his internship and surgical residency at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids from 1960 to 1963. After service in the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1965, Schwaderer completed his orthopaedic residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. In 1968 he began a private practice in orthopaedic surgery at the Orthopaedic Associates of Grand Rapids where he remains today. Schwaderer served as vice chairman for the Department of Surgery (1971-73), chief for the Division of Fractures and Orthopaedics (1975-79), and chairman of the Department of Surgery (1977-81) at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Additionally, Schwaderer serves as an associate clinical professor in the Department of Surgery at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and was the assistant director of the orthopaedic residency program at Blodgett and Butterworth Hospitals from 1975 to 1984. Schwaderer serves on the senior attending staff at Butterworth Hospital, on the consulting staff at Kent Community Hospital and on the courtesy staff at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center and St. Mary’s Hospital. He was named Teacher of the Year for the Grand Rapids Orthopaedic Residency in 1989-90 and is the recipient of the Epsilon chapter of Delta Tau Delta fraternity’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. During his time at Albion College, Schwaderer was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, was president of Omicron Delta Kappa, was selected for the biology honorary Beta Beta Beta, and was “A” Club president. An outstanding athlete, he was cocaptain of both the basketball and track teams and also played varsity football. Schwaderer was inducted into the Albion College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. He has kept active in the life of the College since graduation, serving from 1987 to 1993 on the Alumni Association Board of Directors, as well as on the Albion Campaign for the Generations National Committee and as the coordinator for the Elkin Isaac Lectureship Committee. Schwaderer lives in Grand Rapids with his wife Pamela. They have two children, Christian, ’90, and Gregory, ’91. When he is not working, Schwaderer enjoys golf, fishing, photography, reading and running.

Distinguished Alumni Award

Meritorious Service Award

Up to five Distinguished Alumni are chosen each year from as many as 100 nominees. These men and women are selected on the basis of the following criteria: • Only alumni of Albion College shall be eligible for the award. • Recipients should display genuine leadership and dedicated service to others and exemplify the qualities of a liberal arts education. Well-roundedness in aspects of career, family and community service are sought. • Recipients are selected on the specific basis of: (a) Excellence in career achievements (b) Contributions to community/humanity (c) Service to Albion College The selection committee, made up of members of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, looks for outstanding achievement in at least two of the three areas outlined above.

Up to three Meritorious Service Awards may be given each year, based on the following criteria: • Only alumni of Albion College shall be eligible for the award. • Time, effort and monetary gifts on behalf of Albion College shall constitute the elements in the consideration of a candidate to be worthy of the award. The award may recognize one, two or all three of these elements. • Nomination and election to receive the Meritorious Service Award shall follow the process used to nominate and elect individuals receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Exemptions for these awards include current members of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, members of the Board of Trustees, faculty and staff. Once an individual is no longer in any of the above categories, he/she will be eligible for consideration. Nominations for either of these awards are welcome and may be sent no later than Feb. 1, 1999 to: Office of Alumni and Parent Relations, Albion College, 611 E. Porter St., Albion, MI 49224.
