ALBANY MUSEUM OF ART | SUMMER 2022

FROM THE DIRECTOR HOMECOMING Since I was a kid, I have been fascinated with museums and the treasures they do not have on display, those unnumbered artworks stored safely and securely in environmentally controlled vaults, a rarefied milieu where only the privileged art experts get to stroll, research, and bask in the vastness of human creation. When I began my stint for almost 15 years as a curator of art, history, design, and sometimes a mix of all these disciplines, I counted myself so fortunate to have access to art and artifacts, some of which had not been seen by the general public for decades. It was my job to decide which pieces would emerge from their hermetic concealment and make their way to a gallery to form the backbone of whatever curatorial narrative I was tasked—or that I tasked myself—to create.

Andrew James Wulf, Ph.D. Executive Director

When I began my work at the AMA in the fall of 2019, there were the faintest stirrings of a virus that would soon impact each and every one of our lives significantly over the next few years. Back then, the everyday goings-on at the museum were normal, save the tall order of bringing home our permanent collection from the High Museum in Atlanta and the Conservation Center in Chicago, where our art treasures resided following the straight-line winds that tore the roof from the museum in January 2017. Following 2017 and until very recently, it was strangely haunting to walk the empty vaults at the AMA, an absence that hit me—and thousands of others who love the AMA—viscerally, nay, not viscerally, but in the heart itself. The question we have all been asking is: when will the collection return, and, perhaps dramatically, when will our heart beat again? That time has arrived and we shall all have the opportunity to celebrate together the return of every single work in our collection—none were lost to the storm—this summer when we take over the entire museum with our newest show, aptly titled, Homecoming. This exhibition, curated by our director of curatorial affairs, Katie Dillard, will highlight in dazzlingly original fashion the broadest array of our permanent collection. On behalf of the AMA Board of Trustees and our most fabulously dedicated and talented staff, I hope you will join us to explore the inspiring diversity of our permanent collection and discover the many ways art now and forever serves to break down and set aside the illusive barriers and differences we somehow believe can keep us apart. Looking forward to seeing you soon, Andy

DEVELOPMENT & MEMBERSHIP COME HOME FOR A FAMILY VISIT Summer is a time for travel, but also a time when families gather. School is out, schedules are freer, days are longer, and those “whenever I have a chance” days have finally arrived. At the Albany Museum of Art, our members are our family. With membership even outside the state of Georgia, it’s quite an extended family, but a family nonetheless. For the first time in half a decade, another part of the AMA family—our permanent collection—is back home, and much of it will be on view throughout the summer in our special Homecoming exhibition, which opens with a special AMA members reception at 5:30 pm on Thursday, May 12. At the reception, our family of AMA members will be the first to see these marvelous works from across the AMA collection in all of their glory. Chloe Hinton Director of Development & Membership

If you are part of the AMA family and you haven’t been “home” to see us in a while, this will be the perfect opportunity to get reacquainted with the works of art in the collection. There will be familiar works like Francois Flameng’s Féte Nocturne, which you see on the cover of this magazine, and pieces by well-known artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. You will also be introduced to our latest acquisitions from up-and-coming artists such as Cedric Smith and Eli Saragoussi. Your museum membership makes acquiring and maintaining these works possible. And as an AMA member, you are invited to a special behind-the-scenes lunchtime tour of the AMA on Monday, June 27. And we know many of you will be traveling out of town this summer, and we wish you safe and joyful travels. Keep in mind that your AMA membership card is a marvelous travel companion. As a member, you get free and discounted deals at hundreds of participating museums throughout the Southeast through the Southeastern Reciprocal Membership (SERM) Program. If you are a member at the Supporting or higher level, your AMA membership gives you access to hundreds more museums across the United States (as well as some in Canada and Mexico) through the AMA’s participation in the North American Reciprocal Membership (NARM) program. We hope you have a wonderful summer, and that you will drop by the AMA. If you have renewed your membership, we thank you. If you haven’t renewed, we hope that you will soon. We are already planning events and activities for the 2022-23 year, with our AMA family in mind. Chloe Hinton Director Development and Membership

ON VIEW May 12 – Aug 13, 2022 | All Galleries

HOMECOMING In March, the final portion of the Albany Museum of Art’s permanent collection returned from the Conservation Center in Chicago, where it was conserved, restored, and inventoried following the storm of Jan 2, 2017, that severely damaged the AMA building. Starting with an Opening Reception for AMA members at 5:30 pm on Thursday, May 12, objects from the permanent collection will be on exhibition in the museum’s five galleries. “This summer, the AMA will proudly present many of its treasures, some that have been away from home since January 2017, in a complete museum takeover,” Director of Curatorial Affairs Katie Dillard said. “The museum’s permanent collection will occupy as many square feet as possible within our five galleries, giving visitors a chance to explore the wide variety of artworks this institution has collected over the years, going back as far as 1967, when the Albany Museum of Art was known as the Southwest Georgia Art Association. “There will be an exploration of what the museum has collected, examining pieces that were collected during a completely different time from the one we all live in today. Visitors will have the opportunity to see how the collection has grown, noting who some of the major donors were back during the museum’s collecting heyday (the early 1980s through the late 1990s).”

In addition, Dillard will lead AMA members on a behind-the-scenes lunchtime tour at noon on Monday, June 27. It will include a tour of her work area, and she will talk with members about the process of going through the large project of bringing back the collection, how she keeps track of all the artwork, how she documents it, and her process of selecting the objects for the summer exhibition. The AMA has more than 2,100 objects in its permanent collection, and since December 2021 Dillard has been slowly reintroducing a few pieces at a time. A small number of abstract paintings have been on display in the lobby, and several masquerade masks from Sub-Saharan African nations recently were on exhibition in the Hodges Gallery, giving visitors a bite-size sample of what is held in the full scope of the museum’s collection. “The opportunity to have the museum’s permanent collection completely take over all the galleries is one that is few and far in between, and museum staff wanted to share with our stakeholders, members, and visitors near and far, the joy that we have and the pride that we take in our collection, which in many ways, is a reflection of our community and our history,” Dillard observed. “Guests will be able to view the entire journey this museum has taken throughout the years through the eyes of the collection, beginning in the late 1960s through to the 2020s. “This exhibition is significant for our growth and our ability to move ever forward. Reflected through the pieces that will be on display, visitors will be able to see that path of institutional growth; the decisions both donors and staff alike have made throughout the years regarding what was collected and why.”

AMA CHALKFEST RETURNS SATURDAY, NOV 19 On Nov 19, which is the Saturday before Thanksgiving, AMA ChalkFest will bring back to downtown Albany professional and amateur chalk artists, tents with craft beers and other libations, live music, kids and family activities, food trucks, vendors, and more. The festival will take place 10 am-5 pm and, as in 2021, admission will be free for everyone. “We want to be as inclusive as possible with this event, which is truly a community festival,” AMA Executive Director Andrew J. Wulf, Ph.D., said. “More than 2,500 people came out during the day last year, and we expect an even larger turnout this November. The weather should be pleasantly cool, and, of course, we shall hope for sunny skies.” Each festival has a theme that 10 or more professional artists, who come from as far away as Texas, tackle with colored chalk on the pavement. These highly skilled artists create roughly 50-square-foot images while festival-goers watch and chat with them. The professionals compete for Best-of-Show bragging rights, which come with a cash award. Local artists and school and community groups also compete in amateur categories. Sponsors are already showing keen interest in the festival. “We’re happy that we are getting early inquiries about sponsorship opportunities,” AMA Director of Development and Membership Chloe Hinton said. “The Bridge Group, one of our 2021 sponsors, already has agreed to return as a sponsor this fall. AMA ChalkFest is the type of fun, communitywide event that sponsors love to be associated with.” Sponsorship opportunities and applications for artists, vendors, and food trucks will be available soon on the AMA website, www.albanymuseum.com.
