LEARN Albany Civil Rights Institute 326 W. Whitney Ave. In 1961 Albany joined the Civil Rights Movement with the formation of a desegregation and voter’s rights coalition. The rich history of this movement has been documented and preserved at the Albany Civil Rights Institute that includes the Old Mt. Zion Church - site of the first mass gathering – and more than 12,000 square feet of historical artifacts that aid in learning about the Southwest Georgia civil rights struggle.
