DEAR DONORS,
I didn’t expect when I wrote last year about the extraordinary challenges we faced in 2020 that we’d be here, 12 months later, continuing to meet challenges presented by the COVID pandemic head on, yet here we are. Managing the impact of this pandemic has been a real test of our combined resilience and ability to adapt to ever-changing circumstances, yet I believe we have met and overcome those challenges.
The pride I have in how our professional staff, our faculty and, especially, our students and their families have come together to thrive during these very disruptive times cannot be easily described. I could not be prouder of the efforts you all made to ensure that our students received what we always promise Academies students – an innovative learning environment that develops diligent students of high character who become curious, critical thinkers.
Meeting these challenges came with significant, unplanned operational expenses. However, when we asked for your help you responded with tremendous support. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to you if you have contributed to our annual or endowed funds. Your gift was essential in supporting the school and our students during the past year, and I hope you will continue to include us in your charitable giving.

During the 2020-21 school year, as we continued to deal with unique challenges brought on by the COVID pandemic, you once again showed us your steadfast dedication to the Academies and your willingness to support this school financially when there was a need. And we learned a valuable lesson: when help is required, we have to ask for it, and then accept it gratefully. We asked and you responded with such generosity and grace, and for that we are most appreciative.
Whether you contributed to our annual fund, to one of our endowed funds, or to our Giving Tuesday campaign, please know that your gift was essential in supporting the school during this second year of the pandemic. Having unrestricted funds available to address unexpected expenses was invaluable.
My hope is that you will continue to support us as so many of you have for so long. If you are considering your first gift to us, there is no better time than now to make your intention a reality. The options for giving are nearly limitless. You can donate to our annual fund, set up a scholarship with a specific intent, support a capital project such as our outdoor pavilion, or provide instructions for a legacy gift through estate planning. A Tribute to William B. Picotte ’67
We continue to mourn the loss of a valued friend and former trustee of The Albany Academies, William B. Picotte ’67, who passed away suddenly on August 6, 2021 at his home in Menands. In addition to his service on our Board of Trustees, for a time as board
chair, Bill was also a member of The Albany Academies’ Board of Visitors and the Institutional Advancement Committee. His dedication and service to the Academies were immense; he was always present at special events and his willingness to assist the school with whatever was needed was unfailing. Bill also chaired his class’s 50th reunion and was a major donor to the school.
After graduating from The Albany Academy, just one of a long list of his family members to do so, he earned a bachelor’s degree from College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. In 1971, he completed basic training at Fort Dix in New Jersey before serving in the New York Army National Guard. Also that year, he began a 50-year career at Picotte Companies, a commercial real estate company founded by his grandfather, uncle, and father, where he remained a senior vice president at his death.
Bill’s life was marked by leadership and service to numerous Capital Region organizations. He was a director of Parsons Child and Family Center, Teresian House Foundation, WMHT Public Television, the Greater Capital Association of Realtors, and Commercial and Industrial Real Estate Brokers (CIREB), among other organizations. Bill served as president of the Fort Orange Club and as a member of the Board of Governors for the Lake George Club. Together with his cousins, sister, and wife, he was honored with a Citizen Laureate Award by the University at Albany Foundation in 1997. Bill is survived by his wife, Susan Carroll Picotte, and two sons, David and Philip, both alumni of The Albany Academy.
Bill will be greatly missed by the Academies community.

The Annual Fund
The Annual Fund supports the people and the programs that make a difference in the lives of Academy students. Tuition covers approximately 85% of annual school operations costs, with the rest coming from philanthropic support. Annual Fund donations help to close that gap. The world was a very different place eight-plus decades ago when E. Wayne Wilkins Jr. ’37 walked the halls of The Albany Academy. During his time at the school in the early 20th century, Wayne experienced many firsts: witnessing Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt lay the cornerstone on November 21, 1929, being introduced to his first radio, and being a member of the first class to have completed the entire Upper School course in the new Academy building. Some of his classmates were never able to realize their academic dreams due to the Great Depression and many others made great sacrifices during World War II.
Wayne said The Albany Academy laid the foundation for the success he enjoyed in life and his legacy gift, given to the school after his death in December 2020, reflected his appreciation of and fondness for the school. A portion of that gift supported the recently completed renovations on campus that allowed for the creation of the Early Childhood Center. We are extremely grateful to Wayne for the gift and offer our sympathy to his family and friends.
At the time of his death, he was 101 years old. His last days were in keeping with all his days: uncommonly attentive to others, and driven to get the very most out of life. In fact, shortly before his death, Wayne came for one last visit to The Albany Academy and met with Chief Advancement Officer Ann Wendth.
Wayne grew up in Rensselaer, N.Y., and after graduating from The Albany Academy he went on to Williams College, where he majored with honors in chemistry, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude. While at Williams he also played varsity football and baseball, and served as president of both his class and his fraternity — setting up a lifetime relationship with the college that spanned nearly 84 years and included service as a dedicated member of the board of trustees and president of the Society of Alumni.
A graduate of Harvard Medical School in 1944, he served shortly thereafter in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific before launching his 40-year career. Nearly all of his career was spent in Boston as a prominent thoracic surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he also served as chief of emergency services and a member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School.
His work ethic, self-discipline, deep commitment to his students and the wellbeing of his patients, and the pride he took in his work were at the core of a number of his professional innovations — from esophageal surgery to the airlifting of trauma patients — and formed the energy behind his appeal as a highly sought after teacher and mentor.
During his retirement years in Williamstown he teamed up with his late beloved wife of 75 years, Suzanne (“Suki”), in an array of service projects all over the Berkshires, for which they would share the 2004 Williamstown Community Chest Good Citizen Award. He also held a number of leadership positions during those years — with the Williamstown Library, as president of the Taconic Golf Club, as a trustee of the Village Ambulance Service, and as co-chair of the former North Adams Regional Hospital’s Capital Care Campaign.
We are tremendously grateful to Dr. Wayne Wilkins for the legacy gift he provided to the Academies. His name is proudly displayed in our Early Childhood Center.
