SPLOST The unpopularity of property taxes and the simplicity and perceived fairness of sales taxes has made Special Purpose Local Option Sales Taxes (SPLOST) a popular method of financing needed Capital Projects in Georgia. In 1985 the State Legislature authorized counties to hold referendums for the approval of an additional 1% sales tax for funding Special Purposes. These Special Purposes were originally only for roads, streets and bridges with collection limited to 4 years.
