ooking back on past events to find deeper meaning and answers, especially those where we experience loss, hurt and sorrow, is an effort made to reason with the past. A person does this so you can make better sense of life’s story, in hopes of getting closer to the truth and finding peace. There are even instances where the anniversary date or season can catapult your memory back into remembering a part of your history. Even the act of seeing and holding an object can trigger an experience and emotion to be unlocked from your memory bank. All these examples are acts of reminiscence and are wound up in the story I am about to tell. January, 47 years ago, my relative and one of the Peace River Region’s well-respected guides and ranch hands tragically died after being attacked by a grizzly bear. Harvey Cardinal was a cowboy from Moberly Lake who worked at a number of ranches and guiding outfits. I first met him in the 1950s and he later became my uncle after marrying my Aunt Lena. They had two kids. Rancher Tommy Wilde had picked up Harvey from the residential school in Grouard, AB, to come and work on his ranch near the Doig River village. He also worked at the Foot Hills Ranch near the village and for the Ardill’s Ranch on the Peace River. He also guided for hunters in the mountains, working for different outfits during his working career. Ken Kyllo, near Finlay Forks, was one of them. Over the years, there have been varied accounts or interpretations of what could have taken place during the bear attack that killed Harvey. What follows is the context and background from the people who were with Harvey days before the attack and from the people who found him afterwards. In the fall of 1969, a grizzly bear was spotted
near the Flat Rock sawmill. In November, the grizzly crossed the highway between Goodlow and Cecil Lake, near Clearview, and headed northwest. I saw the tracks crossing the Siphon Creek road in the first week of December, heading north. That fall, Harvey came back to Fort St. John after guiding for Ken Kyllo and he spent Christmas visiting friends and family in Doig River. After the holidays, he was expected to return to work for Kyllo to look after his ranch, but a few days of unsuccessful hunts were keeping him at Doig River longer. On Jan. 12, 1970, eight hunters from Doig River headed southwest in a sleigh pulled by a horse team. We spread out to hunt moose, and returned to the sleigh in the afternoon. Harvey did not make it back until it was almost dark. He was trying to recover a moose that he had wounded, but had to leave it behind until the next day due to darkness falling and his waiting hunting group. However, the next day was too cold to go out and so we spent the day at my brother Tommy’s house. That morning the temperature recorded at the Fort St. John Airport was -40.6 Celsius and -58 Celsius with the wind chill! The temperature can be even colder at Doig River, which is roughly 50 kilometres northeast of Fort St. John. The next day, Jan. 14, 1970, is clearly etched in my memory and for many others from my community. Harvey called me in the morning and I guess he wanted me to light a fire in the wood stove. He called again and asked if he could borrow my gun. I had a short-barrelled .303 rifle that I had shot a lot of game with. He borrowed it and went out to get the wounded moose. Later, I got up and went to my mother’s house. She told Harvey it was too cold to go out, but he went anyway. She gave him food and a tea kettle to take along with him. Continued on B16
