Even the flying snow can’t stop you from having unforgettable glacier encounters. While you don’t get the running water and glacier melt pools created by the warm days in summer, in winter the rich blue ice really pops against the bright white snow. It’s an amazing photo op!
Plus, there are many ways to experience a glacier in winter, each suited to your adventure level.

BY AIR
Just want a good look at a glacier? You can’t go wrong with a flightseeing tour. You’ll see how massive icefields, dozens of miles long, spill into valleys to create glaciers. These expansive sheets of ice leave only the highest mountain peaks and ridges peeking through. Marvel at the beautiful patterns created by deep crevasses. Call Alaska Helicopter Tours (907272-7777), Outbound Heli Adventures (907-351-6736), or K2 Aviation (907-733-2291) to arrange.
ON FOOT
Feel the crunch of snow and ancient ice underfoot. 10 Salmon Berry Tours (907-278-3572) offers treks on the mighty Matanuska Glacier, just two hours north of Anchorage. Starting with a pickup at your Anchorage hotel, you and your small group will head north, stopping to take photos of the glacier you’ll soon be walking on. You’ll get a helmet, trekking pole, and microspikes that fit over your sturdy shoes. You’ll spend around two hours out on the ice with your local Alaskan guide, learning about the glacier’s unique qualities as you take in the magnificent spectacle before you.
BY SNOWMOBILE
Visit the secluded Spencer Glacier by snowmachine with 11 Alaska Wild Guides (907-250-4250) or 12 Glacier City Snowmobile Tours (907382-1050). You’ll ride to the bright blue face of the glacier and have the opportunity to explore the ice caves and formations if it’s safe to do so.
