Anchorage is a great base for scenic day drives—it’s easy to rent a car here, and iconic sites are easily accessible. Take off on the legendary Parks Highway toward Talkeetna with views of Denali; meander on the Seward Highway enjoying coastal views along Turnagain Arm; or set off down the Glenn Highway to witness the Matanuska Glacier.

RIDE THE RAILS

Sightsee on the Hurricane Turn Flagstop Train on the first Thursday of the month from October through May; as you travel round-trip from Anchorage, you’ll meet locals who live in remote areas and use the train to commute. Or take the Aurora Winter Train between Anchorage and Fairbanks on weekends from late September to early May; there are select mid-week dates in February, and March. Alaska Railroad (907-265-2494)
