Grassroots on the hill: An 85-year history
As we celebrate our 85th anniversary, we’ll look at how your co-op has changed and evolved over the years to better serve you.
The Rural Electrification Administration (REA) was born in Washington, D.C., a location which has been the key battlefield for the agency’s survival on more than one occasion. Over the decades, the nation’s electric cooperatives, under that REA umbrella, have faced conflicts that could have led to the downfall of the source of reliable and affordable power to millions of rural Americans.
It is only through the grassroots efforts (including the annual Legislative Conference) of electric cooperatives and their members that co-ops continue to have a strong voice on issues impacting rates, the availability of reliable power and a higher quality of life. In the graphic (right), there are some crucial events over the past 85 years that demonstrate the power of this grassroots spirit.
Electric cooperatives continue to work with our federal and state representatives on a variety of issues— from renewable power solutions and smart grid technology to current needs for broadband in rural communities.
You can be a part of this grassroots spirit by being a part of America’s Electric Cooperatives, or PAC. Learn more by visiting our website caec.coop and on page 10.
