Recipe For Efficiency

Wrapping your water heater

Did you know that your water heater can account for 18 percent of your home's utility bill? By performing a simple, low-cost DIY project, you can increase your energy savings with only about 30 minutes of work. Check out the steps you can take to make your water heater more energy efficient.

Utensils (tools)

• Measuring tape

• Scissors/utility knife

• Mask, gloves, eye protection

Directions:

• Water heater insulation blanket

• Duct tape and marker

• Proper clothing since blanket is made of fiberglass

Step 1:

Measure the length and circumference of the water heater to ensure proper coverage of the wrap (some packaging comes pre-sized). Once you have properly sized the wrap, cut the wrap to fit your heater. As you wrap the blanket around the heater, tape one side of the wrap to secure it to the tank.

Step 2:

Indicate with the marker the location of the elements to allow future access to those areas. Cut the marked areas, creating a flap that allows the elements to be insulated yet accessible as needed.

Step 3:

Pull the blanket snugly around to meet the other end and tape the blanket closed. You may also add an extra piece of tape to secure the seam on the blanket and ensure your tank stays sufficiently covered.
