our eyes peek open, the covers are unwillingly thrown back and before you know it, you’ve stepped out into another barely sunlit day. Somewhere in the middle of your search for a meaning to this life you struggle through lectures and labs, finally ending up in front of a computer (if you’re still awake) bathed in its eerie glow until you close your eyes again, awaiting another impossible day. Not a routine to live for by any standards… “Carpe diem” is a Latin term interpreted as “Seize the day!” Sure, we’ve all heard that one before, “time is of the essence” and so on and so forth, but who cares, right? We do. No, we’re not going to preach about the virtues of time management, how every moment counts and when opportunity knocks you’d be a fool not to let it in. Instead we expect you to be mature enough to see it for yourselves, because frankly- it’s your life. It’s a new year, and a fresh start for those you want it to be, so in this issue we decided to give you a taste of everything that the our world has to offer. There are opportunities just around the corner from your favorite seat in the canteen or the Rec room where you play carom, or the classes where you attend lectures or the grounds where you play sports. (In fact some of them can be found in exactly those places.) We’ve tried to cover as much as we can: from the technical to the cultural, to a brand new perspective on sports and music, opportunities that you may not be

aware of on the good ol’ internet, and the presence of the UAA (our alumni association)- an organization that will tie us back to our years spent exploring these very prospects. At the same time, we’re asking questions, poking fun at ourselves, and we've even picked at the brains of a few students who will be making the big leap into the “real” world at the end of this semester. We’re taking a step back and looking at what lies ahead, because only then can we really seize the chances that we get and see all that we can do. Carpe diem- Seize the day! There will never be another person like yourself, and this day will never return in the entire breadth and space of time and all existence. A
waaz" is a social cause initiated by ICT during the three day long cultural festival- MANZAR.
We wish to involve the youth for a social cause and in the process are trying to sow the seeds of social responsibility among ICTians. Events conducted during "Awaaz" will involve N.G.Os, students, sponsors and the underprivileged kids.

s the last rains of the season lashed Mumbai, and more specifically for this year, the first bout of swine flu became a thing of the past, a completely new kind of fever gripped the city.Its students, to be precise. Malhar, Umang, Kaleidoscope, Mood I and Manzar (yes, Manzar) are but a few reasons why every collegian from Churchgate to Thane eagerly awaits the winter, for though Mumbai never turns cold in this season, it definitely becomes ‘cool’.
Now I’m sure that the moment you read Manzar in the previous paragraph, you went like “Yeah right!”. And you Awaaz will be a celebration of sorts, a celebration of bonding know what, you’re correct. How informative do you think ‘TheSPIRIT’ is? What improvements would you suggest? Mohan Shetty (PhD student) Its good. Quizzes and articles are very interesting. My vocabulury has improved. It could include information on placement for PG students. Rohit Mohan (SYBTech) It is fun to read. The funny bits of humour are good, however articles are sometimes vague, haphazard and not timely. Overall presentation should be worked on.

There should be info for hostel students, about the T.A. activities and also about our students' achievements in academic, cultural and sports fields.

It is quite informative. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate it 5. I think that more people should contribute, so that we get a wider variety of articles. Kavisha Shah (TYPharm): Articles are interesting and fun to read, especially the humour and the games sections. But I think the articles need to be more timely and relevant to current affairs. Kshitij Nandwana (TYCE): The magazine was created with the aim of voicing students’ opinions. But the professors have too much control over its contents. The Spirit is not doing the job it was meant to do.

irst of all we’d like to thank everyone for their valuable opinions. We will try to make sure that all articles retain their relevance in the future issues, and yes, we agree that there is still room for improvement as far as designing is concerned. The Spirit is a cultural magazine-cum-newsletter of ICT, so, we have literary compositions from our students as well as all we cover events in ICT. We would also like to have more of the T.A. activities covered in ICT. Increasing the number of colored pages is possible but requires additional funds. We appeal to the student community to get sponsorships/ advertisements so that we may look into this aspect. The Spirit has freedom of speech within moral and ethical limits. No professor restricts the students’ opinion from being printed. Faculty coordinators are essential to the making of each issue, as we feel they have more experience than the students on the EdBoard. We at the EdBoard strongly feel that more people should contribute to the Spirit. It has been our experience (and of previous EdBoards as well) that while there is no dearth of talent, people are still unwilling to send in entries. We would like to take this opportunity to encourage the student body to send in articles/anecdotes/poems/ suggestions and even let us know about their achievements. 1. What kind of teenager were you? I was a very simple, innocent teenager as a result of my being brought up in a strict atmosphere. Even the word “boy” was taboo at my school. Also, I never conformed to trends just because it was “in”. 2.

What motivated you to become a teacher? Since childhood, I’ve always loved explaining things to people. At home I’d teach an empty room, ruler in hand, hitting tables and chairs. Teaching people helps me clarify my own concepts. In fact, talking to my students on a one- to- one basis made me shift my focus towards counseling. 4. 5.
What would you like to change about yourself? I can be very brusque in my replies. Also, I lack diplomacy. I'd like to work on that. How do you suggest teenagers deal with:
a. Heartbreak There’s no one general formula for it. Both the concerned people’s psychologies must be assessed for a definite answer. However, I wish more young adults of ICT would come and talk to me about their problems. b. Exam stress Some amount of stress for exams is always beneficial but when stress overcomes you, you are “stressed out”. Students must adopt the attitude whereby they believe that “through these exams I am trying to show the world what I have read- this is what I know”. Try and prepare in advance; eight days before the exam start winding down and relax. Writing an exam should be an enjoyable experience. 6.
Are you short tempered or hot tempered? I’m neither hot tempered nor short tempered. Life's too short; I prefer to forgive and forget. 7. • • •

9. What has been your most memorable experience in ICT? During my career here, I have averted at least 4 potential suicides by helping the students in question at the correct time. I’m so glad they came to me when they did.

A TRIP TO THE SIN CITY
A
fter a dreary drive through the deserts of Nevada, the sight of Las Vegas strip at twilight was enduring & resplendent. My unforgettable & enthralling trip was three days and two (sleepless) nights long. Las Vegas is an internationally renowned resort city for gambling, shopping, fine dining, clubbing and entertainment. The Las Vegas strip (6.6km long) which extends from the Stratosphere Hotel, to Hotel Mandalay bay, is a different universe on its own. The moment I caught a sight of this extravagantly lit city, I could wait no more to explore it. Vegas boasts of around fifty hotels with a wide variety of themes, attractions & costumes- New York New York, Paris, Bellagio, Encore & Wynn, Casino Royale, The Venetian, Caesar’s palace, Excalibur, Luxor to name a few. We checked in at the Bellagio, which had a floral theme, and its interior was highly ornate, embellished with colorful, gaudy, fragrant flowers. I was awestruck after watching their fountain show. The enormous façades & the interior décor of all the hotels were spell-binding. The volcano at The Mirage and the Sirens of TI pirate show at Treasure Island, the gondola rides of the Venetian and the artificial daylight sky lounge area, made my tour de Las Vegas an experience extraordinaire. Each hotel included an extravagant casino as gambling is an integral part of everyone’s Vegas trip. I was very disappointed to know that I would not be able to play poker as I was underage. So I guess I need to visit again to win some moolah!!! Resident shows of Cirque du soleil like KÀ, O, Mystère are a must watch. I saw KÀ and was thrilled by the breathtaking stage effects, stunning costumes, spine-tingling acrobatics & martial arts. Rides at Stratosphere and New York New York are worth a try. The roller coaster at the latter is the most electrifying one I have ever been on. Interesting facts: 1. As seen from space, the Las Vegas metropolitan area is the brightest city on Earth. 2.Nineteen of the world's twenty-five largest hotels by room count are on the Strip, with a total of over 67,000 rooms 3.The tip of the pyramid of hotel Luxor contains a fixed-position spotlight that points directly upward & is claimed to be the brightest beam in the world, & is visible from the moon. -Sneha Solanki

here is a long list of Do’s and Dont’s- so called protocols as far as human behavior is concerned but humans are inherently different with respect to their response to changes in the environment, and so we cannot treat them all the same. For instance-a person walking on the streets of United States is fined for spitting, but can such things be practiced in India? Yes, they can, but practically speaking? No. We blame the prevailing conditions, without realizing that we are responsible for them. This ’Chalta Hai’ attitude’ is a popular public sentiment. What would it take to knock out all wrong from our society? Efforts, attention, determination and most importantly, ‘time’. We expect the right conditions to prevail immediately and correct response from everybody in the same situation, but that isn’t possible because human behavior is highly complicated. ‘Rome was not built in a day’, and we too need to have tremendous patience. Our initiative isn’t going to give positive results before the next generation takes up the responsibility. Our country has the two most powerful resources - Youth and History and yet we are not able to progress with our full capabilities. The reason? Ignorance. Principles are absolute but situations are relative. So how can one apply absolute principles to relative situations? This, however, does not mean that we should not have any principles. Wisdom is the most powerful asset and it takes a lot of time and experience to acquire. It may seem simple to get a solution to an engineering problem on the basis of standard practice, but the practice that we follow today has been developed over years of continuous experimentation. Let’s have a look at the problems the youth faces today-population, unemployment, criminal psychology, pollution and I think the answer to all of them is ‘education in a broad spectrum’. Practical and not only theoretical education should be taught right from childhood itself. Education is meaningful only if it imparts wisdom and character and if there is personal development in the following aspects- technical, social and moral. Replanting a crop is pretty easy but replanting a big tree is impossible. In the same manner adult education is much more challenging than educating children. Secondly, facing the reality of the situation and not getting carried away by emotion is vital. The action taken by Shivaji Maharaj against the Mughals is not applicable against some of our countrymen, who are the victims of unemployment caused by failure of concerned bodies. A rainbow depends on timing as much as it does on rain and sunshine. Similarly we have to synchronize our assets with wisdom to get effective development. We have to take the initiative before expecting others to do the same as time is of the essence. If we quit procrastinating we can move forward and learn from experience. We are now in a position to make virtuous choices for the unending challenges in our way ahead. We have the power, rights, and more importantly the responsibility. ah , it’s a wonderful place , this world - wacky, strange and not to mention unpredictable. Just when you think the insane v/s time plot slope tends to zero, there are those discontinuities; that pinch of vibrancy, that makes it a whole new ball game. There are normal people and then there are the crazy ones, there is normal food and then there is the Mess ki Sabzi. Wacky is everywhere and believe you me, wacky is GOOD. This time around SportSpeak is taking a dip into a completely different world-which means there will be no Cricket analysis , no Sania Mirza criticism and yes no biased Arsenal praising. It’s time to look beyond the podium finish , beyond the extra time winner and beyond the match winning six. It’s time to look at Mr. Sports giving the ol’ Wackiness a try. Basketball, one of the most loved sports in the world; trampoline jumping, one of the craziest activities in the worldcombine the two and you get an intense, high- adrenalin, super-wacky game called SLAMBALL. Probably started by some loser who was so short that he couldn’t reach the basket and thus placed a trampoline right under it, this sport has evolved into one hell of a crowd pleaser with slam dunks galore and requires a great deal of endurance and of course, a whole lot of skill. If you thought nothing in this world is more exhilarating than

sky diving , think again. Imagine surfing on waves not of the sea , but of high velocity air crashing into you at unimaginable speeds. It’s simple, jump off a plane at the highest of altitudes with a surfboard glued to your shoes. Not for the faint hearted, this sport requires you to maneuver your body through the sky maintaining your posture at a constant angle of inclination. (Of course, you also need to remember to pull that parachute cord.) Imagine an eagle with a surfboard and what you get is SKYSURFING. Not impressed? Ok, then check this out (and yes it is true) Round 1- Rappel down steep cliffs, Round 2 -suspend yourself horizontally on a bus moving at 150 km/hr , Round 3 – Banana Boat. All this while you’re ironing - YES IRONING. This latest danger sport combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt. This is EXTREME IRONING (just when you thought things couldn’t get wackier!) This is just the tip of the iceberg- with a welter of wacky sports like lawn mower racing, cheese cake gulping, underwater rugby, wife carrying, midget tossing and of course the famous Uzbek sport of Buzkashi, the world of Sports has so much to offer. Eighteen Issues. Four Volumes. Two years since The Spirit became a part of the TA. The Spirit started as a bimonthly cultural magazine of ICT. We have covered all major events, included many literary works of the students, and have interviewed Professors, alumni et al. In a core technical institute of the level of ICT, The Spirit has brought out literary and artistic talents of a lot of students. Of late, people have complained that pages from copies of The Spirit are used to weigh chemicals in labs. If you think that I should be shocked, let me say- The Spirit is a magazine and just like any other magazine, most people will throw it in trash after reading it. A few people may save the copies, probably as a memory of their college days. So, what’s the fuss about? The Spirit is not only a medium of encouraging and appreciating literary/artistic talents of students. Isn’t it great to have college events archived so that ten years down the line, people who are new to ICT know what was the 2008 trek like or how was the first Manzar. Time and again, we have provided a platform for the internal publicity of various festivals and TA activities. I do not claim that The Spirit is perfect. It is far from achieving that status. For this growth it needs each one of you. I know students who write wonderful blogs, but don’t contribute even a single article to The Spirit. The Game of ICT We all love a good game, once in a while. There’s nothing like a good game to cheer up the soul, so to help you get through each year in this wonderful institute- we give you “THE GAME OF ICT”. unfortunately we have not been able to provide a dice with every issue, so you’ll just have to find/make your own! (As future engineers/technologists/entrepreneurs that shouldn’t be too hard!)

APPEAL from the President, BOG, UAA for Membership and Support Pledge: It is our immense pleasure to invite you to join UAA as a member and be a part of the family to which you belong and were longing to connect. Our alma mater; the former UDCT or MUICT has now been granted the Deemed University status in recognition of its accomplishments and unparallel track record which could not have been possible without the contribution of so many individuals – students, faculty, support staff, alumni, well wishers, philanthropists, donors and industries. If you glance through the pages of history of technological advancement of modern India, ICT stands out as a shining example for others to emulate. We have been trying to reach all our graduates and associates, teachers and well wishers to join us in the process of Institute building so that ICT converts itself into a world class university. We cannot do it without you. Please join this great family of UAA, tell us about your experiences and advise us as how to be in the forefront of knowledge creation and propagation. Remember all universities in the Western World are great because their alumni care for them, participate in their activities, advise them on every front and are their torch bearers. We need to create a brand of our own and it is here that you are needed. Try to reach out to your classmates and acquaintances from the ICT and create an occasion to visit the alma materlet that be the reunion of your class; decennial, silver, golden or any other milestone you deem it fit to gather. Bring your family to the ICT and show how your destiny was shaped by the portal of excellence. Not only should you become a Life Member but also pledge annual support to the institute and mentor some of the young students and faculty, if you could afford to do so. If you are in the city of Mumbai, please do visit and meet the Director and your teachers and friends. Our doors are always open – indeed there are no doors literally. Join us today.
