WHAT DOES ViewSPOTS DO? ViewSPOTS is an app that helps people find the perfect floor plan based on their own visual preferences. It analyzes the view connections to the outside and the visual connections between the different rooms in the inside of the house. Each person has different needs and requirements when it comes to their own living spaces - our App recognizes this and allows the user to find a floor plan that best suits their needs based on the inputed preferences. This booklet shows how we developed ViewSPOTS and how to use our Grasshopper definition and App.

SURVEY If you were to build your very own home, what parameters would be important for you to know in order to pick your floor plan? Before we developed our App, we conducted a survey to find out what parameters people find most commonly important. We asked 42 people to fill out a survey as seen below:

These 2 graphs above show information on the participants. The majority of people between the age of 18-24 live alone in a rented place, between 25-34 with their partner in a rented place and between 35-64 with their partner and kids in their own home. Showing us that our App will mostly cater to a 35+ age-demographic. 7

PARAMETERS Based on the survey we conducted, the parameter we chose to create our App was views. Our definition analyzes floor plans by calculating the amount of views to the outside and the view connections within the floor plan. Outgoing views: How much can be seen from the inside out?

direct view indirect view

DDU | Thousand Floorplans

Interior view connections: what rooms are visually connected? How much of those rooms can be seen?

ALGORITHM INPUT In order for the Grasshopper definition to calculate the view parameters from the previous page, the floor plan needs to be prepared as follows:

This is an example for a floor plan you would like to have analyzed in the Grasshopper Definition.

Draw over the room boundaries of the floor plan using closed curves. DDU | Thousand Floorplans

corridor 2 entrance hall kitchen bedroom 2

Each room needs to be labeled so the definition knows the function of each room. It is important that the beginning of each text object lies within its room boundary.

The Definition needs a second drawing of the floor plan with the exterior (windows) and interior (room openings including doors) openings. 13

RESULTS

1-POINT ANALYSIS The 1-point-mode allows you to analyze the views of a specific point within the floor plan. You can manually choose whichever point you like. The different types of views analyzed can be seen below:

RESULTS

OVERALL VIEW CONNECTION ANALYSIS The analyzed floor plan:

Heat-map showing the amount of exterior views:

The heat-map gives an overall impression of the amount of external views of the entire house. The lighter the heat map is, the more external views the floor plan has. DDU | Thousand Floorplans

18

View connection diagram:

The results are shown in a view connection diagram. Each room is assigned one circle (‚button‘). The percentage of the views inside the room to the outside is shown by the blue circle around each button. Every room that is visually connected (and the amount) is shown through lines connecting each room button. The more interior visual connections a button has, the larger and darker the black ring in each button is. 19

THE APP CONCEPT GETTING STARTED

The first step is creating an account. Then, before getting to the search page, the user first learns about the different types of view connections.

THE APP CONCEPT

LEARNING THE BASICS - VIEW CONNECTION COMPARISON As the floor plan becomes more open, the interior visual connection become stronger. A closed floor plan allows for more privacy within the room and an open floor plan allows different room activities to be linked together.

THE APP CONCEPT

MAKING A PERSONALIZED VIEW CONNECTION DIAGRAM After the user learns about the different view connections from the floor plan examples on the information page, he can then create his own personalized view connection diagram following the steps below:

1 The user adds all

the rooms he wants to have analyzed to the diagram as a ‚button‘

2 Through the

circle around each button, the user can specify the amount of view to the outside he wants to have for the given room

DDU | Thousand Floorplans

30

3 The user

connects the rooms he wants to have a visual connection with and through an inputed percentage specifies how large of a connection he would like

4 The size of

the room button varies; the more connections to other rooms it has, the bigger it is

5 At anytime,

the user can delete a room by dragging it into the garbage bin

31

ViewSPOTS | A. Helbig, P. Vehrenberg

THE APP CONCEPT RESULTS

Based on the view connection diagram the user creates, a floor plan thats views best match the diagram is picked from a databank of thousands of already analyzed floor plans.
