You’ll find fun, food and adventure from one end of Lake County to the other. With more than 1,000 lakes, the water activities are endless — from kayaking, fishing and boating and canal tours to leisurely cruises on a rented pontoon boat.
Prefer a land-loving adventure? Enjoy a visit to one of the many quaint downtowns featuring unique shops, historic museums, art galleries, local theaters and picturesque waterfront dining.

The Forest Gateway on the eastern edge of Lake County offers a quieter side of Central Florida. Altoona, Umatilla and Astor invite visitors to slow down, explore nature and experience Florida at a more natural pace. This region anchored by the Ocala National Forest is defined by springs, rivers and wide stretches of protected land. Communities here are closely tied to the outdoors, where boating, hiking, paddling and wildlife viewing are part of daily life and the beaches are just over the river.

Set along the eastern edge of Lake County, Altoona meets the Ocala National Forest, which shapes both the landscape and the pace of life. Surrounded by more than 600 square miles of protected land, the area offers easy access to outdoor recreation.
Alexander Springs, just outside the community, remains one of the region’s biggest draws. The spring’s constant 72-degree water makes it a year-round spot for swimming and snorkeling, while canoe and kayak rentals, hiking trails, birding and picnicking draw visitors into the surrounding forest scenery. The crystal-clear water and shaded landscape make the area a favorite for both day trips and longer stays. Nearby campgrounds and lodging options allow visitors to use Altoona as a base for exploring deeper into the forest.
History and landscape define Altoona as a place rooted in both land and legacy. The community’s rural character and quiet sense of history date back to incorporation in the late 1800s but Altoona never fully rebuilt after a devastating fire and today remains unincorporated. The nearby McTureous Homestead and Museum, a restored 19th-century Cracker home, honors Medal of Honor recipient Robert M. McTureous, Jr.

Umatilla has long been known as “Nature’s Hometown,” a title that reflects both its setting and its way of life. Compact in size and easy to navigate, the city offers a pace that feels calm without feeling disconnected. Mature oak trees, historic neighborhoods and locally owned businesses give the community a lived-in character shaped by generations of Umatillians. Downtown has become a vibrant destination for visitors. A growing restaurant scene adds energy and variety, inviting visitors to savor local cuisine, relax with a drink, and discover charming eateries in the heart of the city.. Dining now shares space with longtime shops and businesses that continue to anchor the area. Festivals and special events throughout the year create a steady rhythm of activity that draws visitors while maintaining a hometown atmosphere. Among those events is the Umatilla Black Bear Festival, held each winter at Cadwell Park, typically in late January or early February. The

festival celebrates the city’s history and its long-standing coexistence with the Florida black bear. Live music, food trucks, vendors and wildlife education programs and community exhibits fill the park. Recent highlights have included appearances by Highwaymen painters, a sword demonstration, children’s activities and even short introductory flights over Black Bear country by a local flight school. The Oscar Mayer “Wienermobile” even made an appearance.
The Umatilla Cracker Christmas Parade, held the second Saturday in December, is another signature event. The day begins with a morning dog jog before the parade steps off, turning the corridor into a gathering place for families and visitors alike. The well-attended parade now more than 50 years strong travels down State Road 19 and concludes with a Christmas festival at Cadwell Park.
Agriculture remains visible in and around Umatilla. Working farms and u-pick operations, including Sunsational Farms, reflect strong ties to the land. Seasonal harvests bring families together and reinforce traditions rooted in local soil.
Outdoor access shapes much of the city’s appeal. Lakes and waterways support fishing and boating, while parks provide space for walking and recreation. The Ocala National Forest, which lies just beyond the city, offers trails, springs and opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing.
Umatilla’s scenic landscapes, rich agricultural heritage, and local traditions make it a charming destination for visitors. The city offers a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere where travelers can explore nature, experience authentic Florida culture, and enjoy the town’s unique character at a leisurely pace.

Astor is shaped by the steady presence of the St. Johns River, where life moves at the pace of the water. This riverfront community offers a distinctly relaxed atmosphere centered on outdoor living, natural beauty and a deep connection to Florida’s waterways. Being surrounded by forest, marshland and open sky are reasons Astor appeals to visitors looking for space, scenery and spending time outside.
The St. Johns River anchors daily life, drawing boaters, anglers and paddlers year-round. Whether navigating the river by pontoon, kayak or canoe, the experience is defined by quiet stretches of water and abundant wildlife. Wading birds, manatees and native species are common sights, making the area especially popular with nature watchers and photographers. Nearby creeks and backwaters offer additional opportunities to explore beyond the main channel.
Recreation extends well beyond the river. Hiking, birding and fishing are all part of the landscape and access to nearby conservation areas and forested land add to Astor’s appeal. Outdoor dining and riverfront gathering spots provide places to unwind at the end of the day, often with views that shift from golden afternoons to wideopen sunsets.
Astor also maintains a strong sense of community reflected in local traditions and seasonal events. Festivals and gatherings bring residents and visitors together, celebrating the area’s river culture and easygoing lifestyle. The setting feels far removed from busier destinations, which makes Astor a welcoming stop for those traveling through Lake County.
Astor’s river-centered focus, abundant wildlife and laid-back character offer an experience rooted in nature where the surroundings are inviting and the pace encourages visitors to slow down and stay awhile.

Northwest Lake features some of Lake County’s most established communities where history, nature and everyday life intersect. This region centered around Lady Lake, Fruitland Park and Leesburg offers walkable downtowns, picturesque parks and easy access to lakes and waterways. Northwest Lake balances small-town charm expressed by oak-lined streets and historic landmarks with the energy of places that continue to evolve through local shops, dining and year-round events.

Lady Lake pairs a strong sense of place with old Florida character manifest by moss-draped oaks frame streets that create a canopy that has been turning heads for decades. That signature look was even captured in a photo featured
in the Saturday Evening Post in 1929, a reminder that Lady Lake’s scenery has long been part of its identity.
Lady Lake also leans into its rural roots. One long-standing attraction is Uncle Donald’s Farm, which has been open for more than 40 years and operates as a working farm across 50 acres. Visitors can pick up fresh eggs and other farm products, including goat’s milk soap, and get up close to a wide range of animals. The experience includes everything from milking goats to petting pigs and feeding cows, giving families a hands-on look at life on the farm. Visitors to Uncle Donald’s Farm may come across Jersey Giants, known as the largest chicken breed in the U.S., along with Nubian goats, Florida panthers, miniature horses and even a 200-pound African tortoise.
Shopping is part of the draw. On Tuesday, the Lady Lake Farmers Market at the Rolling Acres Sports Complex brings together local farmers, artisans, crafters and food vendors in a setting that supports small businesses.
Golfers also have options nearby. Harbor Hills Country Club sits just outside town and offers a scenic 18-hole course with rolling elevations and tree-lined fairways. Water Oak Golf Club welcomes players with its rolling elevations, tree-lined fairways, and a relaxed, inviting setting perfect for every skill level.
The town’s history is easy to spot — if you know where to look. Visitors driving north on U.S. Highway 441 are greeted by a historic log cabin built in 1935 that served as the original town hall and remains a visible link to Lady Lake’s earlier days. Nearby, the Lady Lake Historical Society Museum in the old train depot traces the area’s story from its earliest Native American inhabitants through pioneer families and beyond.

Fruitland Park offers a welcoming blend of small-town charm and easy access to nature. Tree-lined streets and stately neighborhoods reflect the city’s history, while thoughtful growth has added modern touches that keep it feeling current. The community invites visitors to slow down and experience a quieter side of Lake County.
Outdoor recreation plays a major role in daily life. Lake Griffin and the Ocklawaha River provide opportunities for boating, paddling and fishing, while nearby parks offer space for walking and enjoying the scenery. Hikers, birders and nature lovers will find plenty to explore, with trails and waterways showcasing the area’s natural beauty.
The city is also home to Lake Griffin State Park, a destination known for its diverse wildlife and scenic landscapes. The park features Florida’s second-largest live oak, estimated to be between 300 and 500 years old. According to historians, the tree may have provided shade for Seminole leaders and early settlers who once traveled through the area.

Fruitland Park’s downtown adds to its appeal with local shops, bakeries and cafés that create a friendly atmosphere and restaurants offering casual spots to dine and gather. One standout is Rose Plantation in a historic mansion overlooking scenic Fountain Lake where fine dining pairs with a memorable setting.
Fruitland Park’s natural surroundings, rich history and relaxed pace deliver a small-town experience that feels genuine, accessible and deeply connected to the landscape.

Leesburg blends a historic downtown with the energy of a growing city. Brick-lined streets, preserved architecture and an active restaurant scene give the downtown area a distinct sense of character, while shops and attractions keep it lively throughout the year. Leesburg is home to Beacon College and the city benefits from a steady flow of students, cultural events and community activities that add to its vibrancy.
The city’s calendar is filled with events that draw visitors from Lake County and beyond. Large-scale gatherings such as the Leesburg Bikefest, which attracts riders from around the country, have helped put Leesburg on the map as a destination for festivals and outdoor celebrations. Seasonal events, concerts and community gatherings keep downtown active well beyond the workweek.
Nature spots and recreation facilities are never far away. Venetian Gardens, just a short drive from downtown, offers one of the city’s most recognizable settings, with lakefront paths, shaded walkways and scenic views that make it a favorite for walking, relaxing and enjoying the outdoors. The park’s design blends

landscaping and water to create a peaceful space within the city.
Leesburg also has a rich sports culture. The city’s long relationship with professional baseball dates back to 1922 and Leesburg was the spring training home to minor leaguers in the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Braves organizations. Leesburg also fielded a Florida State League team for more than 20 years and won league championships in 1938 and 1966. Several Hall-of-Fame greats played here, including Rollie Fingers, ace pitcher of the 1965 Leesburg Athletics. The hallowed 89-year-old diamond adjacent to Venetian Gardens currently hosts the Leesburg Lightning, a collegiate summer league team.
Facilities such as the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex support youth tournaments, regional competitions and community recreation throughout the year.
Dining and entertainment continue to expand, with options ranging from casual lakefront spots to established local favorites. Ski Beach Bar & Grill offers accessible waterfront dining, while other restaurants contribute to a diverse mix that reflects the city’s growth. Beyond downtown, Leesburg is surrounded by lakes, conservation areas and parks that invite exploration. Come visit and see how Leesburg honors its past while continuing to evolve with its balance of history, recreation and ongoing development.

Sco ’s Roofing is excited to introduce a new service that is already making a big impact in local neighborhoods: roof soft washing. After years of working on homes throughout the area, Tyler and his team began noticing a common issue—many roofs looked worn, stained, or aged long before they really needed to be replaced.
“We see so many homes every day with roofs that appear to be at the end of their life,” Tyler explained. “But a lot of the time, the roof isn’t old enough to require replacement. It just needs the right kind of cleaning and care.”
That realization led the company to begin offering soft washing, a safe and effective method for removing mold, algae, and other organic growth from roofing surfaces. Unlike traditional pressure washing, which can be too harsh on shingles and roofing
materials, soft washing uses a gentler process designed to clean thoroughly without causing damage.
“Soft washing offers homeowners a refreshed look in a way that’s safe for the roof,” Tyler said. “It’s amazing what a difference it can make when all that algae and staining is removed.”
The results are often dramatic, instantly enhancing curb appeal and restoring the overall appearance of a home. For homeowners who want their property to look its best, especially before selling or simply maintaining pride in ownership, roof soft washing provides an affordable option that can extend the visual life of the roof.
The Sco ’s Roofing team believes this service fills an important gap for many homeowners. “Not every roof that looks dirty needs to be replaced,” he noted. “Sometimes it just needs to be brought back to life.”
With roof soft washing now part of their offerings, Sco ’s Roofing continues its mission of helping homeowners protect their investment while keeping their homes looking clean, cared for, and beautiful.
To learn more about this new service, visit the Roof Soft Washing page on their website, www.tsco roofing.com.
Homeowners are also encouraged to call today for a free quote and see how soft washing can transform the look of their home.

Sun, water and fun. It’s not just Florida beaches that deliver this glorious trifecta.
More than 143 million visitors traveled to the Sunshine State in 2025, drawn by the multitude of entertainment options.
In addition to Central Florida’s famous tourist attractions, you’ll find a wealth of hands-on outdoor adventures far beyond the theme park crowds and queues. Lake County is a literal paradise with countless memories to be made.

TLake County after all, filled with picturesque lakes just waiting to be explored.
One of the most entertaining ways to experience those lakes is with Catboat Clermont, which offers private guided tours for individuals, couples, families and groups on the Clermont Chain of Lakes.
No paddling required. You’ll cruise the lakes in a powered “catboat” (short for catamaran) capable of speeds up to 30mph. These unique two-seat watercrafts are an exhilarating yet safe way to glide across the lake. And unlike kayaking, you aren’t sitting at full-on water level. You’ll have a high, stable perch where you can relax and enjoy the adventure.
“We use the Cadillac brand of catboats; the seats are very comfortable, kind of like a LaZ-Boy with shocks,” says Nate Crawford, owner, general manager and tour guide.

connected navigable lakes that are home to an abundance of native flora and fauna, wildlife and birds.
Passengers can be as young as age 5, but drivers must be at least 18. All participants can communicate by radio.
“We love questions,” says Nate. “In fact, about half of our tour was created by people’s questions.”
Tours launch at Cypress Cove Marina & Resort with close parking and clean restrooms. Before setting out on your tour, you’ll have a quick safety briefing and practice session so you can confidently captain your catboat.
“My career before this was doing stunt work for film, tv and live shows, so we provide multiple layers of safety and all the equipment,” says Nate. “We want you to have the safest, most beautiful experience available.”
Book on the Catboat Clermont website. Check the calendar and pick the date and time that works for you. Then show up ready to have a blast!
“This is a first-class special experience, and we don’t have groups any bigger than 10 people so you get the attention you deserve,” says Nate, who describes
“There’s a lot of water, and we explore about a third of it on a tour,” Nate says.
There are no more than five catboats (10 people max) on

What began as a family business venture has turned into a destination for people seeking to get closer to nature. Guiding guests on that fun adventure are King and Lucy Lee Fowler and an assortment of friendly, fuzzy hosts.
King and Lucy Lee launched LunaSea Alpaca Farm in Clermont in 2010.
“We started with the idea of raising alpacas for fleece and showing them,” says Lucy Lee. “Once the pandemic hit, people were looking for things to do outside. They were coming by the farm, so we started giving tours.”
The farm is home to over 30 alpacas and a flock of free-range chicken, geese and ducks but no “angry birds.”
Up-close-and-personal animal encounters make this an intriguing place for visitors of all ages.
“Our tours are about one hour long; they’re both interactive and informative, so you’ll learn about alpacas and their care,” says Lucy Lee. “You go in the pens and get treats to feed them. You’ll also visit with Lilly, a llama with unusual spotted markings, and go into the nursery with the crias (baby alpacas).”
Tours are held daily and usually capped at 25 or fewer people, but
the farm can accommodate larger groups with advance notice.
Explore your creative side during a Painting with Alpacas session led by a skilled instructor. The popular two-hour class is held twice a month in the alpaca nursery. All materials are provided, but don’t fret if you’re not particularly artistic. Pre-sketched canvases are provided that you’ll customize as you paint. Participants are surrounded by living inspiration, and you’ll have time to feed and interact with the alpacas.
Alpaca Yoga is an opportunity to indulge in quality personal time. Stretch, relax and laugh out loud as you enjoy the calming presence and playful antics of both adult and baby alpacas.
“We hold yoga classes twice a month in the nursery and the babies interact with everybody,” says Lucy Lee. “It’s a one-hour session and you’ll get treats to feed the alpacas during and after class.”
Tours and classes are by advance reservation only. Painting and yoga classes are for ages 10 and older; children must be accompanied by a participating adult. You can also make arrangements to celebrate a birthday at the farm.
Call or text for more information and to make reservations.

Weekends at the Winery take place every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4pm. Admission is free and tasting is just $5.
“It’s set up festival style and visitors walk through the warehouse, get a souvenir cup and go station to station where they taste seven to eight wines,” says Christian.
Weekends at the Winery also feature live music in the back pavilion, along with a wine and beer bar. With different food vendors on site, the food offerings change, but you can always enjoy a full lunch.
Daily tours and weekends at the Winery don’t require reservations, but you will need a reservation to participate in the VIP Tour & Tasting Experience.

VIP guests are treated to a personally hosted special access walking tour, followed by an indulgent experience in the private tasting room. You’ll savor a variety of wines, including reserves not normally included in the complimentary tastings, all paired with a lavish gourmet charcuterie platter.
In addition to daily tours and tastings, Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards offers special events throughout the year, including Grape Stomps, Wine & Chocolate Festival and Lakeridge Lights (an interactive drone show featuring live music, wine bar and food under the stars). Visit website for upcoming events.

Florida is certainly a vacation spot, but it’s also a serious agriculture state. Florida’s farmers, ranchers and fishermen provide 2,204,400 jobs and make a $132 billion economic impact on the state.
In 2023, Florida ranked #1 in U.S. production of sweet corn, Valencia oranges and watermelon.
Florida is home to 44,000 farms and ranches that cover 9.7 million acres. Some of those farms offer u-pick fruits and veggies.
You’ve probably seen “Fresh from Florida” stickers at the grocery store. That colorful little sticker means you’re buying fresh, locally grown food produced by Florida farmers.
A quick visit to the Fresh from Florida website shows you what’s in season. The website also includes a bonanza of tasty recipes to help you use all those fresh finds.

Experience Lake County’s scenic and wildlife areas along the shorelines of nine blueways, which are similar to hiking trails with physical and geo-positioned markers to guide kayakers, canoers, and paddleboarders through waterways. Check out trails within the areas of the St. Johns River, Golden Triangle, Palatlakaha Basin and Ocklawaha Basin:

• BLUE CREEK RUN
• GOLDEN TRIANGLE RUN
• HELENA RUN
• LAKE GRIFFIN RUN
• LAKE HARRIS RUN
• PALATLAKAHA RUN
• STAGGER MUD LAKE RUN
• ST. FRANCIS DEAD RIVER RUN
Blueway users can find a trail for different experience levels. The Golden Triangle along Lake Dora’s shorelines in Tavares and Mount Dora is suitable for novices and casual use; trails along the St. Johns are considered “wilderness” areas (more appropriate for experienced users). Experience the beauty of Lake County’s waterways through Tavaresbased Adventure Outdoor Paddle, which offers kayak and paddle board rentals. It’s a great way to see Florida’s abundant wildlife in its natural habitat. You can also explore the equally beautiful Clermont Chain of Lakes thanks to self-serve paddleboard rentals available at Clermont’s Waterfront Park.
Book a tour with Catboat Clermont to experience Central Florida’s most pristine waterways on a sporty ProGliders power boat. You’ll practice driving the two-person catamaran in the Cypress Cove Marina and Resort before heading to the Clermont Chain of Lakes following a guide who will lead you to the highest point on the Florida peninsula, an area which includes Lake Louisa, Lake Minnehaha and Lake Minneola.
Any visit to Lake County should include a boat ride, especially on the Dora Canal, which is lined with picturesque cypress trees. The canal is one of the best waterways for wildlife viewing because it is a haven for nesting ospreys, herons, and egrets.
Experience the canal via kayak/ paddleboard rental with Adventure Outdoor Paddle in Tavares or hop on a CatBoat Adventure Tour in Mount Dora.
