The Power of Two

Behind every great success is partnership, perseverance and a shared passion for making a difference.

mazing things can happen when two people share a dream. This month, we celebrate local powerhouse couples who prove that love and ambition can coexist seamlessly. These dynamic duos not only lift each other up, but also make a lasting impact on the community we all call home. Doug and I completely understand. Between running Akers Media and working together as a real estate team, we’ve learned that success doesn’t come from doing everything alone; it comes from doing everything together. Working side-by-side means learning to balance late nights and deadlines with patience, trust and keeping things fun. It’s about cheering each other on, even when the day feels long and the to-do list seems endless.

The couples featured in this issue inspire us because they show what’s possible when two strong individuals align their passions. Whether they’re building a business, leading a cause or supporting each other’s careers, their stories are proof that teamwork is a true superpower in both life and love.

I hope these stories remind you to celebrate the people who stand beside you. Every great success starts with support, shared goals and someone who believes in your potential as much as you do.

To every couple featured, and to every reader working toward their dreams with someone they love, this issue is for you. Doug and I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a truly amazing 2026! Thank you for being loyal readers and for your continued support.

TRUST?

The Gift of Help

or people living with cancer, the most priceless gifts can be those that aren’t bought. Paying attention to someone’s specifi c needs is just as important.

1. Being there This can include helping with household tasks (like cooking, cleaning, yard work, etc.), accompanying someone to a medical appointment or test, providing transportation, or just holding their hand.

2. Staying in touch Phone calls, emails, snail mail, and texting can help people overcome isolation. Make note of any preferences they may have. Someone with head and neck cancer may prefer writing to talking. Someone getting chemo might want to rest now and get together later. Follow their lead.

3. Supporting together. Friends and family can form a support community, sharing a calendar for rotating tasks.

4. Listening Clinical psychologist Susan Silk developed her Ring Theory when she was being treated for breast cancer. Her diagram places the person in crisis in the bullseye of concentric circles. The next ring out holds people closest to that person, like family members. The ring farther out could hold friends; the ring still farther out could hold coworkers, etc. Silk writes, “When you are talking to a person in a ring smaller than yours, someone closer to the center of the crisis, the goal is to help.” If you need to complain, she says, complain to someone in a ring outside the one you are in.

Making a Difference

At RBOI we strive to make a positive difference in people’s lives. Meet two members of our amazing team!

Lenore Gallico, Offi ce Manager: “I believe what makes RBOI so special is not only the excellent care we provide, but the heart with which we do it. Over my 25 years here, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing countless moments of kindness. I’ve watched patients offer support to someone who may be sitting alone, and I’ve seen one bring fl owers and give a heartfelt hug to brighten another’s day. Healing is not just about medicine, but about connection, love, and hope. Being able to contribute to that environment is one of the greatest blessings of my career. RBOI has become more than a workplace for me—it feels like family. I carry with me a deep sense of gratitude for the patients who inspire us, the colleagues who support us, and the mission that unites us.”

Amy Roberts, LCSW: “I used to sometimes pop in the offi ce as a high school student when my mom worked here. Today, I am employed with RBOI as an oncology social worker. My work helping others navigate the mental health aspects of cancer and the aftermath of treatment is rewarding. During treatments, I assist with practical needs like housing, transportation, insurance barriers, social supports, family needs and more. Once treatment ends, people often feel lost. We provide groups, book clubs, and advocacy events. I chair the Cancer Alliance, which works to overcome gaps and barriers to care locally. At RBOI, coworkers, and community partners genuinely want to help patients fi rst and foremost. Our patients are courageous and inspiring. I believe this cancer center provides a meaningful and positive impact and I get to hear that from our patients and families almost daily.”

Becoming Santa: In December 2001, I was working at Leesburg Regional Medical Center and I was asked to portray Santa for the daycare center they had on Rambo Street. I was immediately hooked. I went from a borrowed suit to now

I love what I do because: There is great joy when a child locks eyes onto me and realizes that they are meeting the true Santa. It is especially true with children of all ages who have developmental disabilities, all are accepted. That warms my heart to no end.

Fun fact:
I adore my wife. I am so blessed to be with a woman who accepts me as I am, who

with our children, a sleepover at our house and great foods and drinks.

Favorite Christmas song: Jingle Bells, most people know the words.

Favorite memory as Santa: A couple of years back, someone said they needed a Santa. Their father was in hospice and his time was nearly complete. As a healthcare Santa, I immediately arranged a visit. He had portrayed Santa and Christmas was his favorite holiday. I arrived with my wife to nd a festive room with somber people, stockings everywhere, his spouse, children, grandchildren all there. I held his hand, spoke to him and the family, we laughed, we cried, we comforted and we did pictures. We honored his life, his legacy. My cry afterwards was full and cathartic.

My message to the world: We live in a time of divisiveness; children are particularly sensitive to that and all they truly want is acceptance and acceptance equates to love—agape love. Be kind, smile at your neighbor and know that Santa still remembers and loves you.

t Fross & Fross Wealth Management, the mission has always gone beyond managing money. It’s about guiding families through life’s biggest moments and preserving wealth across generations.

The rm was founded by twin brothers Thom and Rob Fross, who built their practice the oldfashioned way by going door to door and delivering exceptional service. Thom’s philosophy of “being all things to a few people” still de nes the rm’s focused approach today, now serving over $1 billion in brokerage and advisory assets through LPL Financial.*

Private Wealth Manager Zechariah Montera is helping carry that legacy forward while shaping the rm’s future. Since joining the team in 2018 as an intern, he earned his securities licenses, led the rm’s investment committee and now focuses on delivering advanced planning to a new generation of clients—many of whom are still working or recently retired.

Today, as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® practitioner, Zechariah specializes in comprehensive planning for families across multiple generations. “Part of our mission statement sums up all of our client relationships: we’re friends and family investing in life together,” Zechariah says. “Money is just a tool, we’re here to help clients

support their family, travel while they can, or achieve whatever goals matter most to them.”

Many clients relocating to Florida nd themselves needing to rebuild their advisory teams. Zechariah often acts as their personal chief nancial o cer, helping coordinate tax and estate planning by leading meetings with attorneys and CPAs. With a deep understanding of each client’s nancial life, family dynamics, and long-term vision, he helps align strategies across disciplines. His team-based model ensures retirement and business decisions are optimized and intentional.

“What’s di erent about the population moving here now is that many are still working or prefer to manage their own investments,” Zechariah explains. “But they want a trusted partner for planning and someone to step in for their spouse in the future.

That’s exactly why I launched

our standalone, fee-based nancial planning model.”

Still, selectivity remains a core philosophy.

“We start every relationship by making sure we have good chemistry, that their goals are achievable, and that we can truly add value,”

Power 2025 COUPLES

Power couples aren’t just partners in life; they’re partners in purpose. These dynamic duos chase big goals, build together, support each other and make an impact across Lake and Sumter counties. Their teamwork, drive and love prove that two people on the same mission can be unstoppable.

Bronson & Heather

LIVINGSTON

Making the most of every moment side by side.

Living, working and playing together makes for a sweet life when you find the right partner.

Bronson and Heather Livingston affirm that truth every single day.

Heather, who has lived in Umatilla her entire life, graduated from Umatilla High School in 1993 and then studied sports management at Florida State University (graduating in 1999).

Bronson hails from Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and graduated from Sevier County High School in 1994.

They met when mutual friends

Bronson has known since elementary school introduced them while Heather was vacationing in Pigeon Forge. They hit it off and Bronson moved to Florida in 2004. The couple married in 2007.

Bronson has been in the same field his entire adult life. He was 18 when

he started working at Sea Ray Boats, learning fiberglass from the ground up.

“When I moved to Florida, I started doing pool repairs for a local company,” he says. “As I got to know all the pool dealers, they asked if I did side work. Eventually I took a leap of faith, gave six months notice at my job and in 2014, we started our own business, Glassworkxx Fiberglass Pool Repair, doing repair throughout Florida and across the country.”

Heather worked for the Lake County government for 13 years before leaving to work with Bronson at Glassworkxx.

It’s typically Heather talking with customers while Bronson is handson, literally wielding the torch to apply ecoFINISH®, a flame-sprayed polymer coating.

“There’s nothing better than a happy customer,” Heather says. “Word of mouth has been our best advertising.”

When they’re not working or giving back to the community in whatever ways they can, you’ll find the Livingstons doing something fun, often joined by their grown children Aaron, Reno and Kayla. Reno also works for the family business.

“We like to golf, go boating and to the beach,” Heather says, adding that they also dote on their two grandsons. “We love college football and are big FSU and Tennessee fans. We have a pool, so all our friends and kids come over to swim and watch the games.”

Multiple times a year, the Livingstons pack their bags and hit the high seas.

“We’re homebodies, but Carnival cruising is our thing,” Heather says. “That’s what we give each other for birthdays, Christmas and our anniversaries. Our best destination so far has been Aruba, but for our 50th birthday celebrations next year, we’re cruising to Hawaii from Seattle.”

HUEY Michael Lisa &

Priorities matter.

For Michael and Lisa Huey, God comes first, followed by one another. After that, everything else falls in place.

The Hueys are dedicated to strengthening families, uplifting their community and committed to making a difference.

Michael grew up in Ohio and was a four-year letterman in track and field at Ohio State University.

He’s worked at the top of the fitness industry almost three decades as a personal trainer of high school, college and professional athletes in multiple sports. He worked with Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Sumter County and became an ordained minister in 2019. In June 2025, Michael became a master trainer at Genesis Health Clubs in Brownwood and received his master’s in theology.

Lisa hails from Chicago and works as an RN in interventional radiology at UF Health in Leesburg. She’s also an entrepreneur, certified Christian life coach and author who just published Healed, Whole, and Holy: A Devotional Journey of Truth, Identity & Transformation.

Michael and Lisa met at a Clearwater church in 2007 and married in 2009. They’ve lived in Sumterville since 2023. They don’t have children of their own, but they happily answered the call to mentor youth in their community.

The Hueys’ non-profit Faith in Action Global Ministries works with school sports teams at South Sumter and Wildwood high schools and the Sumter County community. They also serve as voluntary chaplains and Michael leads chapel for the sports teams at both schools.

“Our ministry tagline is ‘Local action for global impact,’” Lisa says. “We believe we can make a difference in the community with these kids, and then they can truly change the world. We consider it a ‘God

Answering God’s call to uplift youth and transform their community.

wink’ that Wildwood High School is on Huey Street.”

They’ve partnered with Sleep in Heavenly Peace to build and deliver beds to kids in Sumter County. The plan is to build 50 to 75 beds at the December 6 event, with a goal of making sure no kid goes without a bed in Sumter County.

Friends describe the Hueys as “a power couple for Jesus” and that’s their greatest honor.

“Our marriage is strong because we’re unified in our vision and mission,” Michael says. “It’s built on faith and fueled by purpose. We’re closing in on our 60s but feel like we’re in our 40s. We want to leave a legacy of love, hope and transformation for generations to come.”

The husband-and-wife team behind One Fire Church in Eustis has built a ministry rooted in sharing Christ’s love.

The best-friend bond and shared faith of John and Mia Tompkins continue to guide both their marriage and their mission.

“We actually met when I was in seventh grade,” Mia says. “His family had just moved here from New Jersey, and his sister was my best friend growing up. But we didn’t end up together until 2012, after he had given his life to the Lord. God brought us together at that point, but we’ve known each other our whole lives.”

That lifelong friendship turned into a partnership with purpose. When the two reconnected, their shared faith became the foundation for what would grow into One Fire Church.

“We started small,” Mia says. “It began as a Bible study in our home for young adults and it just kept growing. We outgrew the house, started renting spaces, and before long, One Fire was born.”

One Fire has flourished into a thriving ministry that reaches beyond church walls. The common thread through everything they’ve done has always been music.

“Our heart is to take worship into the streets and bring light to places that need it most,” Mia says.

The couple operates The Refill Station, a café and coffee shop designed around a “pay it forward” philosophy. Their Refined Variety Shoppe adds another layer to their outreach. The boutique is filled with custom jewelry handcrafted by Mia, along with motorcycles, home décor and other one-of-a-kind treasures. The shop also houses a barber area where John and licensed barbers offer haircuts. Every purchase and service supports the One Fire Outreach Mission.

Their journey hasn’t always been easy.

“We’ve been burnt out, robbed and criticized,” John says. “When you put yourself out there, it draws attention, good and bad. But we’ve learned to stay grounded in who we are and what God called us to do. Setting boundaries and learning to say no saved our marriage.”

Their secret to keeping their relationship strong is powerful.

“Listen to understand, not to respond,” Mia says.

John says a recent turning point in their marriage came when he told Mia she was his best friend, something he had always assumed she already knew.

“When he told me I was his best friend, something shifted,” Mia says. “It reminded me that we’re truly in this together. Not just as husband and wife, but as partners and friends.”

Michael & Kristy

Their oath to serve extends far beyond the badge.

Michael and Kristy Marden have spent their careers and their marriage

Executive Director for the Florida Association of School Resource Officers.

Between them, the couple has more than 55 years of dedication to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), where they met and discovered a shared calling to help others.

Kristy, who has served nearly 28 years, is the LCSO Chief of Staff. She coordinates special events, serves as the sheriff’s liaison for LCSO Charities and sits on several local boards, including the Women of Caring and the Lake Cares Food Pantry. The fourthgeneration Lake County resident says giving back is simply part of who she is.

Michael, also approaching 28 years with the sheriff’s office and 30 years in law enforcement overall, serves as a captain and heads up the School Resource Bureau, the largest bureau in the department. His focus is keeping students, faculty and staff safe on campuses across the county. And his service extends way beyond

He also teaches at the University of North Florida and Valencia State College and serves as

“Our mission is simply to serve others,” he says. “We give back to the community that raised us.”

Together, the Mardens have raised three sons and a daughter in their blended family and are now proud grandparents of two grandchildren . . . and three fur babies.

Their oldest son serves in the U.S. Marine Corps and their middle son works as a commercial appraiser with the Lake County Property Appraiser’s Office. Their daughter is Assistant Director of Operations for the Lake County Tax Collector’s Office and their youngest son works in the electrical field.

“We have spent our lives giving back and we raised our kids doing it too,” Michael says. “When we did charity cookouts, we had our kids out running around helping serve people. As they grew up, It has become a part of their life too.”

The couple credits their lasting partnership to patience and setting aside quality time.

“We still like each other,” Kristy says. “We are still best friends.”

“Yeah, we still go on dates,” Michael adds. “Even when the kids were little, we made it a point to get away together every six months or so. You have to make time for each other.”

Both describe their marriage as an extension of their life’s purpose to serve. Whether through law enforcement, local boards or volunteerism, their shared mission is to make Lake County stronger.

Faith and family come first. That’s our foundation. Everything else flows from that.

JoeSabrina& J CICERI

In that time, they’ve raised six children, three of them foster children, and now have five grandchildren. Their businesses, volunteer work and large family mean full days, but they wouldn’t have it any other way.

“We got together when we were just youngsters,” Sabrina says. “We’ve grown our family, our dreams and our businesses together.”

Both Lake County natives—Joe graduated from Leesburg High, Sabrina from Eustis—they’ve stayed rooted in the community that shaped them.

“Faith and family come first,” Sabrina says. “That’s our foundation. Everything else flows from that.”

Electrical Works started in 2007 with just Joe (the CEO/President), a pickup truck and a vision that took shape at the Ciceri’s dining room table.

“It was right before the market crashed,” Joe recalls. “It was tough, but we believed in what we were building.”

Today, the company is licensed in more than 25 states, employs over 80 people and is known for its commitment to safety, integrity and quality work.

“We don’t just hire people, we invest in them,” Joe says. “Our team members

Their oldest son, Tristan, now serves as vice president and has helped Electrical Works expand nationwide by partnering with major clients in commercial, municipal and telecommunications sectors. Together, Joe and Tristan also helped launch the four-year electrical apprenticeship program at Lake-Sumter State College, giving students hands-on training and job opportunities close to home.

While Joe builds infrastructure and opportunity, Sabrina focuses on wellness and healing. After a decade working in traditional nursing, she turned her attention to preventative health and opened Immunity Health Spa in 2020. The concept quickly took off, and this year, Sabrina opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art 6,000-square-foot facility in Leesburg unlike anything else in Central Florida.

The new Immunity Health Spa features the region’s first indoor Scandinavian spa, over 30 advanced therapies, personalized wellness plans and even an on-site juice bar.

“People are realizing how important it is to take care of themselves,” Sabrina says. “Our goal is to help them feel their best, inside and out.”

Launching the original spa during the pandemic could have been risky, but Sabrina says the timing was right.

“People didn’t know who to trust or where to go,” she says. “We wanted to create a place that truly helps people live healthier, longer lives.”

The Ciceris stay focused on giving back through both businesses. Joe serves on the Lake 100 board and partners with Lake-Sumter State College to expand workforce development. Sabrina has served on the boards of the American Cancer Society, LifeStream Behavioral Center and the Central Florida Boys and Girls Club. For 2026, she has her eyes set on serving as a board member for the AdventHealth Waterman foundation.

Despite full schedules, they make time for what matters most.

“In our free time, we’re usually just hanging out with the kids and grandkids,” Joe says. “We enjoy work but family is where everything begins and ends.”

Joe and Sabrina are building more than successful businesses—they’re building a better tomorrow for the place they’ve always called home. As for the secret of their marriage, they both agree that respect keeps them strong, and that faith, family and community remain at the heart of everything they do.

“We don’t always think alike, but we value each other’s perspective,” Sabrina says. “Even when it’s tough to hear, it helps us grow, personally and professionally.”

Keeping marriage and radio perfectly in tune.

ames and Patty Floyd go together like coffee and a morning show.

They are partners in every sense of the word—in life, business and their shared passion for community.

James and Patty, who will celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary this month, have spent the last decade running Leesburg’s WQBQ radio station, keeping local voices and businesses on the air.

Their story began when James, running a bus route for his church, knocked on Patty’s door and invited her to attend. The two dated off and on through high school before parting ways, only to reconnect years later.

The pair worked together for most of their marriage. Before taking over WQBQ, they ran an indoor putt-putt and laser tag business in the Lake Square

Mall for several years. When that chapter ended, the radio opportunity came along.

“I told her, ‘I got you a job,’ and she said, ‘Who said I was looking?’” James says. “November marked 10 years we’ve been here at the radio. Like I always tell people, she runs the office and I run my mouth.”

Despite seeing each other more than most couples, communication remains one of James’ and Patty’s biggest challenges. Working side by side means their worlds often overlap with business, family, church and grandchildren.

But sometimes, things fall through the cracks. “We assume the other one already knows what’s going on because we work together,” James says.

They have learned to pause, reconnect and remember that open

communication is as essential behind the microphone as it is at home.

Their partnership has powered the station’s mission to support small businesses and connect neighbors.

“Our local economy really comes from our mom-and-pop shops,” James says. “It’s not just about collecting paychecks, it’s about building relationships.”

Together, the Floyds have also used their platform to give back, hosting fundraisers for local students battling cancer and helping countless organizations spread the word about their causes.

“We just want to help people,” James says.

As for the secret to their 30-year marriage? James says with a laugh, “Happy spouse, happy house.” Patty adds, “God first, and everything else just seems to fall in place.”

Jeff Kim &

BURG

Kim and Jeff Burg grew up in Wisconsin and met in the 1990s through mutual friends.

“We’d get together every Wednesday to watch Melrose Place,” Kim says. “Jeff kept coming around, and after a while we started dating.”

Those Wednesday nights eventually paid off. Three years later they were engaged. After two more years they married.

“We took our time,” Kim says. “We did everything the steady way, making sure each step felt right.”

Kim and Jeff forged a partnership grounded in patience and support as they navigated school, career changes and raising two daughters.

Kim built a career in human services, first as a foster-care case manager before earning her master’s in education.

“I’ve always been drawn to helping people,” she says. “My training helps me create supportive environments where people feel seen and valued.”

Jeff pursued a path in business. His father bought

company when he was a teenager, and Jeff started working there after school. He later earned degrees in accounting and marketing and spent more than 20 years in strategic planning before launching a youth sports-training franchise.

“I’ve always liked building things,” he says. “Whether it’s a business, a product or a team, I love the process.”

Around 2020, Jeff began looking for something he and Kim could build together. His parents had lived in The Villages for more than two decades, so when the opportunity came to relocate, the timing felt right.

“We visited, and it just made sense,” he says. “It felt like the next chapter for us.”

A love story built on trust, balance and a shared drive to make life and business sparkle.

After months of research, they found their fit in Two Maids, a cleaning service franchise that combines their strengths.

“Jeff brings the operations and marketing,” Kim says. “I bring the people side. Together, we’ve created a culture where everyone feels respected and heard.”

Though they work side by side, they still make time for fun.

“We just spent a few days at Disney for Jeff’s birthday,” Kim says. “We work hard, but we don’t forget to live a little. We moved to vacation land so we could actually enjoy it.”

Their advice to younger couples? Kim says, “Trust each other’s strengths and stay in your lane. Don’t let ego get in the way, and remember to have fun.”

Jeff adds, “You can build a business and a life together, as long as you don’t lose sight of why you started.”

Steve Linda&

From one act of compassion grew a mission that’s lifted thousands out of despair.

“B

ear one another’s burdens” is biblical instruction Steve and Linda Smith take to heart.

Determined to follow Jesus’ example, they have dedicated the rest of their lives to helping the poor and needy.

Steve was president of an insurance company and Linda worked as an executive for a Fortune 500 health care company. Life was busy with family, golfing, church fellowship and travel.

The couple worked remotely and served on numerous community projects after moving to Clermont in 2000.

Then came the cold morning of January 1, 2007, when they met a homeless man outside a restaurant. Compelled to help that individual, they researched local services but discovered none were available.

Neither Steve or Linda had any background in social service, but they heeded God’s call to act because they’d been abundantly blessed.

In 2007, they founded New Beginnings, a faith-based nonprofit organization to help break the cycle of poverty.

“It’s a hand-up program, not a handout,” Steve says. “If someone is willing to commit up to six months to the program, we help them work on their skills and change their habits.”

NEW BEGINNINGS PROVIDES:

• Housing

• Counseling

• Financial Literacy

• Life Skills Training

• Job Training

The goal is for program participants to become self-sufficient, move into permanent housing and no longer need assistance.

What began with volunteers and a rented house for homeless clients has grown into New Beginnings Village, which features a training center, thrift store that covers 96 percent of overhead expenses and six newly built two-bedroom transitional homes.

New Beginnings has provided housing and services to over 10,000 people and has helped 512 families transition from homelessness to selfsufficiency over the last 18 years.

Steve helped develop Woodwinds, a 96-unit affordable rental community that provides case managers, activities and free afterschool care for the renters’ children.

New Beginnings also created Lake County’s first Community Land Trust and is partnering with the City of Groveland to build seven affordable homes for middle-income residents to purchase.

Steve and Linda are well versed in what families need. Married in Ohio 43 years ago, they have four grown children and 13 grandchildren.

Now in their late 70s, Steve and Linda are both cancer survivors, thankfully now in remission.

They continue to stay busy, having helped start two other nonprofits in Lake County.

“We give all the glory to God,” Linda says.

“Everything we’ve done has been with His power.”

PEACE OF MIND

FROM START TO FINISH

By integrating family values with professional moving expertise, Quality Moving Services delivers satisfaction, care and reliability on every move—near or far..

t’s a cool Tuesday evening and Travis Long is right where he wants to be.

Enthusiastic children’s voices and the crack of bats on baseballs create the perfect background noise as Travis coaches the 12-and-under Lady Lake baseball team.

“I grew up in Lady Lake. Now I’m coaching and watching my own kids play on the same

eld where I played 16 years ago,” he says.

With ve active children aged 5 to 12, youth sports are a main focus for Travis and his wife Kaleigh. All four of Travis’ sons play baseball and his stepdaughter is on a travel volleyball team. Between coaching duties and attending practices, you can nd the Long family at their kids’ sporting activities at least four nights a week.

“I get so much feedback from people who love that our business is family-owned and -operated. I really look at our customers as extended family and want the best for them,” says Travis, owner of Quality Moving Services, LLC.

With that in mind, he’s taken one of life’s most stressful tasks— moving—and simpli ed it.

“We try to take as much moving stress out of the way as possible. I love what we do and realize what we’re doing is truly making a di erence, one job at a time,” says Travis, who has a practical, common sense business ethic.

Based in Fruitland Park, the local family-owned business operates across Florida and in all 48 continental states. Fully licensed and insured, the business is owned by Travis and managed by his brother Turner (“Junior”) Long and Ryan Peterson.

FULL-SERVICE MOVING

People move for a variety of reasons, but certainly not for the fun of it.

Quality Moving Services takes the hassle out of moving thanks to their experienced customer-focused approach. Since the business launched in 2014, Quality Moving Services has handled 12,000 moves for thousands of satis ed customers.

Their expert team is there for you every step of the way— from planning the move, to packing, transporting, unloading and setting up in your new location.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

As a Villages’ real estate agent, Kristin Coleman is constantly working with clients moving in and out of the area. For the last nine years, she’s repeatedly worked with Quality Moving Services and says outstanding customer service is the main reason.

“They have very competitive pricing, and their sta is well trained. Their customer service is always top notch, and Travis takes great pride in this,” says Kristin.

“I’ve used them myself for a personal move and as a real estate agent, they have been my go-to when my clients’ plans with another company have failed. Quality Moving has proven their reliability again and again,” she says.

“They handle all di erent types of moves, whether someone is moving to another house in The

LOCAL

Whether it’s a local move or long distance, Quality Moving Services

The company is fully certified for out-of-state moves, and unlike most companies, Quality Moving Services does not require deposits for those moving out of Florida.

“We go anywhere in the lower 48 states with people either moving to Florida or leaving the state. Our moving jobs are about 50-50 split between people moving here or moving out. We recently went as far as Wyoming to move a couple back to The Villages,” Travis says. “Most people are moving to The Villages, but we move people everywhere

Quality Moving also offers direct moving services, which many

“We can load someone’s household in The Villages on a Monday and have their belongings at their new place in California on a Saturday. We can load in Florida on a Monday and be in New York by

Before moving from Chicago to The Villages, Bonnie Christenson contacted nine major interstate movers trying to find the “right” company for their big move.

“Then I remembered Quality Moving Services also did long distance moving. I’d used them previously when I had to move my sister-in-law out of The Villages into a nursing home. I still had Travis’ number, so I called,”

“I’d heard nothing but horror stories about people moving crosscountry, but Quality Moving made it seamless and stress-free. The staff is professionally trained; I can’t say enough about the company,”

Quality Moving Services can provide everything needed for a move— from complete packing, loading and unloading to full reassembly at the new location.

The company also o ers valuation insurance at no additional cost with no deductible.

“We hear so many stories about people’s belongings being in a tractor trailer with several other households. When the truck nally arrives later than expected, they don’t get all their belongings and end up being charged more than they were quoted. Unfortunately, this is a very common thing, so we made it a mission to not let that happen,” says Travis.

“Many companies that give you a great price will mix your belongings with other households and then take twice as long to get there. You’ll often end up paying $3,000 to $5,000 more than you were originally quoted. That’s bait and switch,” he notes.

“When I started the company, I determined that I would not mix multiple household belongings together in a single move. When we move someone’s household, their belongings are never mixed in with another customer’s belongings. Also, our pricing is guaranteed, so if we tell a customer the price, it’s that price out the door,” says Travis.

“We get paid when the job is done, when everything is out of the truck and put into the house. We’ve done it this way ever since we started our business and we handle thousands of customers every year,” he says. Is there a move in your future? HOW DR. BELA KUDISH DELIVERS HEALING THAT GIVES WOMEN THEIR LIVES BACK.
PAID PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

or many women, pelvic floor disorders quietly chip away at comfort, confidence and everyday joy.

The embarrassment of urinary leakage, the discomfort of pelvic pressure or the pain that makes even walking or intimacy difficult can leave them feeling isolated and unsure where to turn.

That’s why patients throughout Lake and Sumter counties, and far beyond, are grateful for Dr. Bela Kudish.

A double board-certified urogynecologist with more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Kudish specializes in helping women restore the quality of life they thought

they’d lost. Her work combines surgical precision with deep compassion, addressing complex pelvic conditions, lower urinarytract disorders and pelvic-floor dysfunction.

“I love that my field allows me to see immediate improvement in a woman’s quality of life,” Dr. Kudish says. “We’re not just treating symptoms; we’re helping people return to the activities they love.”

A CALLING TO IMPROVE LIVES

Dr. Kudish began her career in obstetrics and gynecology with plans to pursue gynecologic oncology, a field centered on life-and-death challenges. But over time she realized her heart was drawn toward something different — helping women live better, not just longer.

“Urogynecology allows me to make a real difference in how someone feels every single day,” she explains. “It’s about improving function, comfort and confidence.”

Today, her patients range from women recovering after childbirth to seniors seeking relief from longignored issues they assumed were simply part of aging.

“Many women think urinary leakage or pelvic pressure is inevitable as they get older,” Dr. Kudish says. “It’s not. These are treatable conditions.”

WHAT SHE TREATS AND HOW

Urogynecology sits at the intersection of gynecology and urology. Dr. Kudish treats conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse (when the bladder, uterus or vaginal walls drop due to weakened support structures), urinary incontinence, painful intercourse and recurrent urinary-tract infections.

Childbirth, heavy lifting, chronic coughing, constipation and even menopause can contribute to these problems. But Dr. Kudish emphasizes that “normal aging” doesn’t have to mean living with discomfort or embarrassment.

Her approach blends conservative therapies and minimally invasive surgical options. Some patients benefit from pelvic-floor physical therapy or medication. Others may require

reconstructive surgery to restore the natural support of the pelvic organs.

Dr. Kudish is particularly known for her expertise in robotic-assisted surgery, a technique that uses small “keyhole” incisions and advanced visualization tools for highly precise repairs.

“With robotic surgery, we can correct prolapse or incontinence using smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery,” she explains.

In 2024, Dr. Kudish celebrated performing more than 1,000 robotic surgeries — an impressive milestone that reflects her technical mastery and the trust patients place in her.

She has also been featured as a Castle Connolly top doctorurogynecologist in the United States for the past 11 years.

THE IMPACT OF HER WORK

For many women, the results are life changing.

“One of my patients had stopped leaving her home because of severe prolapse and incontinence,” Dr. Kudish recalls. “After surgery, she told me she finally went golfing again and took long walks with her friends. She said she felt like herself for the first time in years.”

It’s these transformations that keep her motivated. “When I see someone regain their independence and joy, that’s the best part of what I do,” she says.

MORE THAN MEDICINE

Dr. Kudish’s practice is built on thoroughness and trust.

New patient visits are designed to be comprehensive, giving her the time she needs to review every detail of a woman’s health history, address concerns and develop a personalized plan. “It’s important to take the time,” she says. “Every patient’s situation is unique.”

At her clinic serving The Villages area and surrounding communities, Dr. Kudish continues to break boundaries as the only urogynecologist performing these advanced reconstructive surgeries locally. Through compassionate care and cutting-edge medicine, she’s giving countless women their lives back.

Her care extends beyond the operating room, too. She provides each surgical patient with detailed recovery guides, emphasizing how

There have been major changes recently to the access of women’s health care in central Florida with the closure of UF Leesburg’s labor floor. However, rest assured that Lake OB/GYN Associates of Mid FL will continue to provide the highest quality women’s care it has provided for over 50 years. As a past president of the oldest and most prestigious society for the specialty (The South Atlantic Association of obstetricians and gynecologists), Doug Moffett, MD recalls one of the most special days of his career when he presented his father with the society’s highest honor — The Lifetime Achievement Award — for his service to the specialty over his prestigious 45 year career. It is with the same sense of pride that he anticipates his son-in-law, Anthony Fahsholtz, DC joining our medical community — continuing the family theme to the service of our patients. “Tony is a gifted chiropractor with almost 10 years of experience and

the fact that he is my son-in-law makes me even more delighted that he will be practicing out of our office in The Villages”, says Dr. Moffett.

Fortunately, Lake OB/GYN associates will continue to provide convenient, local prenatal services in their Leesburg and Villages offices with delivery at a new state of the art facility at South Lake Hospital in Clermontabout 30 min from their Leesburg office. “At rst we were just going to do it on the weekends because we both had jobs,” Jesus says. “But it started to grow, and we said, look, let’s just do this 100% or not at all.”

In April, the two opened Kings of Mini Splits, their Main Street storefront in downtown Leesburg, designed not just as an HVAC shop, but as a fresh-air destination. Alongside mini-splits, their wives Noelia and Linda introduced Lampe Berger French air-purifying lamps — a perfect match for cleaner, healthier air.

“A lot of customers come to us from The Villages,” Jesus explains. “They have nice cars or golf carts in their garages, and they want to keep them in near perfect condition. It can get to 100 degrees in there and leather cracks.

With a mini-split, you can keep it cool to avoid damage — and it’s fast and cost-e ective.”

Stop by the Leesburg shop to see the systems in action and feel the di erence for yourself.

STUDENTS COACHES TEAMS

ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT Setbacks shook her, but God’s presence reminded her that even the hardest seasons can shape something beautiful.

AMIRAH NEWTON

“I’ve always been driven,” Amirah says. “But I also had people around

Amirah’s sports journey started during her freshman year with girls’ flag football, a sport she’d never played but had long wanted to try.

“I did powderpuff in middle school and always wanted to do more,” she says. “When we finally got a team in high school, I knew I had to join.”

“I’ll be honest, I couldn’t catch a ball to save my life,” she laughs. “There was this one game where the ball came flying and it just went straight through my hands. My mom yelled from the stands, ‘Take her out, coach!’ I knew I wasn’t going to

Her toughness didn’t go unnoticed. Around that same time, a coach suggested Amirah try weightlifting. She was hesitant, but

“I grew up around the sport,” she says. “My cousin’s a national champion and I figured I’d give it a try.”

Under the guidance of Coach

Despite everything she juggles, Amirah maintains a 4.3 GPA and ranks among the top of her class. She’s deeply involved in the Honor Society

“I love to debate,” she says. “My teachers noticed it early. They’d say, ‘Amirah, you’re going to run this whole classroom debate!’ I want to be part of change. I want to be a voice

Much of Amirah’s strength, both physical and emotional, comes from her mother, Megan, an educator in

He’s got a wrestler’s grip, a cowboy’s heart and a never-quit attitude.

ports is a family tradition, personal challenge and way of life for Mount Dora High School senior wrestler Colton Fickett.

Colton says he immediately felt a connection to wrestling when he was introduced to the sport in third grade by a friend who suggested he give it a try.

“I liked it because it’s one of the hardest sports out there and I like pushing myself,” Colton says. “It’s one of the only sports where it’s just you. There’s no team, it’s you against the person across from you. The adrenaline rush you get when you’re out there, knowing you can control what happens, that’s what I enjoy about it.”

Coach David Kemmy’s mentorship has shaped his athletic career.

“Coach Kemmy is amazing,” Colton says. “He knows so much and I’ve only had one other coach. Having him has been a great experience. There’s no one like him.”

Wrestling is Colton’s primary focus, but his athleticism extends beyond the mat. He’s also involved in football and rodeo, where he has gained national experience. And he has the belt buckles he’s won to prove it.

“My whole family works with cows and horses,” he says. “I’m involved in team roping. I’ve been to Oklahoma for the National Little

Britches Rodeo Association and it’s been a blast.”

Colton is inspired by how his parents balance hard work and family life with grace.

“My dad, Robbie Fickett, is a Battalion Chief for Lake County Fire and owns Fickett Builders, a construction company,” he says. “I see how much he does for our family and how dedicated he is. I want to be like him when I grow up.”

Colton is also active in his community. He volunteers for FFA fundraisers, hosts cow shows for young children and participates in local events like the 5K run in Mount Dora.

Colton also loves hunting and shing, and he recently scored his biggest buck in Georgia.

“This buck was chasing a few does and I shot him at around 300 yards,” Colton says. “I got him hanging up in my room.”

Colton’s best advice to younger athletes is when things get hard, keep pushing through. Don’t let the challenges stop you.

MORGAN HORGESHIMER

She’s flipped pain into power and every setback into another reason to rise.
STORY: KYLE COPPOLA

ast Ridge High School senior cheerleader Morgan Horgeshimer has faced more than her fair share of setbacks, both physically and mentally. Yet, she’s emerged stronger from each challenge, driven by an incredible passion for the sport of cheer and a deeper understanding of herself.

Morgan didn’t always know she’d end up in cheer. In fact, she started out on a dance team alongside her sister Lily.

“I loved dance, but I wasn’t as energetic as I wanted to be,” Morgan says. “I wanted to explore acrobatics, trampoline, and gymnastics, but the team in Groveland shut down. So, I decided to try out for a competition team and fell in love with it.”

“I love performing because it lets a different side of me come out,” she says. “I get to perform, and I’m happy with what I’m doing. I love motivating others and helping people around me.”

Morgan’s recovery wasn’t just physical, it was also emotional.

“There were moments when I was really sad and felt alone,” she says.

“But seeing the support of my family and friends, especially my physical therapist, was huge for me. I found

HOLIDAY Shopping Tips

Tis the Season to Shop Safely! The holiday shopping season has arrived! Here are a few safety tips that will help you avoid falling victim to criminals who are out there looking for opportunities to steal your gifts…and your joy!

Always try to shop with others…remember the old saying “There’s safety in numbers!”

Try your best to SHOP DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS. If shopping after dark, only shop in shopping centers that have well-lit parking areas and make a mental note of where you parked.

LOCK YOUR VEHICLE and don’t leave items and gifts visible inside the car.

ALWAYS BE AWARE of your surroundings.

SHOK TOP

LOOK AROUND and under your vehicle before approaching it.

KEEP YOUR KEY fob in your hands while walking to your car in busy parking lots. This will allow you to push the panic alarm in the event you are approached by someone suspicious.

Simply appearing to BE ALERT AND AWARE of your surroundings is oftentimes the very best deterrent for would-be criminals.

TRAIN SMARTER. PLAY HARDER. GET TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

643 Powerhouse makes this possible year-round.

ractice makes permanent.”

When you have the right place to practice you can hone your skills and take your game to the next level.

That’s exactly what the Gibson family had in mind in March 2025 when they opened 643 Powerhouse, a premier indoor batting cage and training facility in Wildwood.

Central Florida weather can wreak havoc on outdoor practice, so having a high-quality indoor option makes it easy to train year-round. Designed for baseball and softball players of all ages and skill levels, 643 Powerhouse is for young athletes through seniors.

In addition to four professionalgrade batting cages, the facility offers expert coaching and personalized programs from three in-house coaches.

There were no local indoor training options prior to the opening of this family-owned and -operated business.

“This is the only facility of its kind for kids and adults to use in

this area. We offer batting cages for both baseball and softball and also have a cage to use for tee practice or soft toss,” says owner/CEO Dennis Gibson, a fifth generation Sumter County native, father of five and longtime coach.

“We offer memberships that allow for unlimited use of the cages, or you can rent the cages by the half hour or hour. You don’t have to be a member to use the facility, but members get the best rates,” says Dennis, noting that memberships are billed monthly for convenience.

The 2,500-square foot facility can also be rented for team practices and private events.

643 Powerhouse hosts special events, such as the pitching camp that took place in November with Rayan Gonzalez who played with the Colorado Rockies.

Private lessons offer one-on-one training with facility coaches, so players can work on different aspects of their game and fine-tune drills to

achieve their full potential. These focused training sessions are available as single lessons or in packages of four lessons or eight lessons.

Whether your second grader is into T-ball or you’re a Villager looking to stay fit and active, 643 Powerhouse is more than just a training facility. It’s a safe, family-friendly environment where you can have fun, improve your skills and up your game.

Historic house is young at heart

Pisces Rising is a love letter of flavor and hospitality to Mount Dora.

he little white Florida Cracker-style house at 239 W. 4th Avenue in Mount Dora has caught each last light off Lake Dora since it was constructed in 1919.

The building constructed in the then-popular “shotgun” architectural style designed to

keep out the Southern heat became home to Pisces Rising in 2003, a restaurant built around Florida cuisine, fresh local ingredients and warm hospitality.

Much of the home’s original charm was preserved by owner Anney Winters (from Key West), who kept the heart pine floors, cut-glass doorknobs with skeleton

keyholes and dining rooms that feel both historic and lived in.

When Anney retired in 2013, she passed the torch to a team of longtime employees who had helped build the business from the ground up. Owner and sommelier Joshua Jungferman and his sister, Stevie Solanick, started hosting and serving there in 2005. Stevie

is now the general manager and beverage director.

“We’re proud to say that much of our staff has been here for years,” Stevie says. “We prioritize growing from within, which is why so many people have gone from part-time positions to leadership roles,” she says. “We also encourage our team to pursue a life outside of work because we believe that a well-rounded life leads to richer experiences for our team and our guests.”

Stevie’s energy is infectious. Her bubbly personality fills the room and sets the tone for everyone around her. She leads with warmth and grace, creating a team that mirrors her enthusiasm and is grounded in purpose. The staff greets every guest with the same easy friendliness. In an industry known for turnover, their connection to one another and their guests says everything about the culture Pisces Rising has built.

The original house and staff have evolved with additions and upgrades, but one thing has remained consistent: community is at the heart of everything they do.

“Our story starts with people,” Joshua says. “From the moment our guests walk through the door, they’re part of our family. We believe food tastes better when it’s shared among friends, and that’s why our locals, tourists and snowbirds mean everything to us.”

From ownership to seasonal team members, the crew believes that the laughter, stories and support make Pisces Rising a home rather than just a place to eat.

“Every dish, every smile, every sunset over the lake is a reminder that connection is the heart of what we do here,” Jason says.

Chef Antonio Quiñones works hard to ensure the menu is a true tribute to Florida with ingredients sourced from local farms, distilleries and fisheries, reflected in flavors that celebrate the state’s

diverse cultures, rich history and natural bounty.

What began with Louisiana and Key West influences has evolved to incorporate a medley of Florida cultures with seafood, steak, a Caribbean flair, a little Cajun and a little Spanish to make it all unique.

“Florida provides diverse ingredients, so it was an easy evolution,” Stevie says.

The attention to detail stands out in everything from hand-cut steaks and freshly baked rosemary focaccia to the award-winning wine list and warm, earthy décor.

Appetizers range from rosemary focaccia bread and calamari fries to brisket poutine, with lighter options like Chef’s Soup of the Day, a seafood Cobb or a white anchovy Caesar.

Many of the entrées celebrate Florida’s coastal and Southern roots. The chimichurri pork tenderloin with mashed potatoes and sautéed squash is pure comfort, while the fresh catch is pan-seared and finished with preserved lemon beurre blanc. Shrimp and grits bring a little Louisiana to Lake County with andouille, peppers and wine cream sauce, and the whole snapper reflects the Caribbean with yellow rice and greens.

Handhelds and wraps include the mahi-mahi sandwich, Nashville hot crispy chicken and the ever-popular Paradise Burger. All are perfect

for a quick bite at the tiki bar while celebrating the sunset.

The house-made Bananas Foster arrives with a little ceremony and applause from surrounding tables. Want something more decadent? Treat yourself to a dessert from local purveyors Le Petit Sweets and The Chocolate Dream.

Specialty cocktails include the Blue Envy, a smoked blueberry old-fashioned made with Angel’s Envy Bourbon, and The Dora Canal, a coconut rum mixed with fresh mint, blackberries and lime juice. There are also multiple beers on tap as well as great alcoholfree concoctions.

SHRIMP & GRITS

12 oz. creamy stone-ground organic grits

2 oz. andouille sausage, diced

2 oz. red and green bell peppers, diced

2 oz. onion, diced

2 oz. fresh spinach

and just like the restaurant, offers experience, flexibility and dedication. The catering operation is no side hustle, but rather a natural extension of their mission to impress and overdeliver all over Lake County.

The restaurant partners with the Mount Dora Chamber, helps lead New Year’s Eve events on the waterfront and supports multiple nonprofits and celebrations like Lake Cares and Juneteenth, to name just a few.

“It’s a beautiful setting in a small town,” Stevie says. “It’s really a whole experience, not just the food or drinks. When people come in, they’re more family than anything. This is our home and we love to share it.”

1 oz. white wine

1 tbsp. butter

7 oz. heavy cream

Blackened seasoning

Pepper jack cheese, grated

DIRECTIONS:

Render the diced andouille in a hot pan until it releases its smoky richness. Add peppers, onions, and garlic, and sauté with butter until tender and aromatic. Deglaze with white wine, reducing by half before stirring in the heavy cream to create a velvety, spiced sauce.

Season the shrimp generously with blackening spice and sear until just opaque. Finish the sauce with spinach and a touch of pepper jack for creaminess and gentle heat.

Spoon the warm, buttery grits onto the plate, nestle the shrimp tails-up along the center, and cascade the andouille cream sauce over the top.

Chef’s Note: Southern comfort elevated — creamy, smoky, and indulgent, with layers of spice that linger just long enough to make you crave the next bite.

GRILLED PORK TENDERLOIN WITH CHIMICHURRI

INGREDIENTS :

8 oz. pork tenderloin

Brown sugar

Kosher salt and cracked black pepper

Buttery mashed potatoes

Sautéed squash and zucchini

Chef’s chimichurri (fresh herbs, garlic, vinegar, olive oil)

DIRECTIONS:

Rub the tenderloin with salt, pepper, and a touch of brown sugar for balance. Grill over high heat to achieve a caramelized crust and juicy medium interior. Plate over a bed of whipped buttery mashed potatoes and a medley of sautéed summer squash and zucchini. Spoon the bright, herbaceous chimichurri over the pork to finish — a vibrant contrast of acid and freshness against the smoky sweetness of the grill.

Chef’s Note: A study in contrast: earthy, sweet and herb-forward, grounded in classic technique with a touch of Florida sunshine.

JALISCO SOUR

INGREDIENTS :

2 oz. Authentico Reposado Tequila

1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

1/2 oz. Agave

1/2 oz. Malbec

few dashes Fee Foam

DIRECTIONS:

Add tequila, lime juice, agave, and Fee Foam in a shaker. Dry shake 2–3 times, then add ice and shake hard 5-6 times. Strain over rocks. slowly or with a spoon.

INGREDIENTS :

2 oz. butter

2 oz. brown sugar

1 ripe banana, sliced down the middle

1/2 oz. banana rum

1/4 oz. 151 rum

3 scoops premium vanilla ice cream dash of ground cinnamon

DIRECTIONS:

In a warm sauté pan, melt butter with brown sugar until it forms a golden caramel. Add sliced banana and toss gently to coat and caramelize. Deglaze with banana rum, then carefully add 151-proof rum: ignite for a dramatic flambé. Pour the molten caramel and bananas over vanilla ice cream and finish with a whisper of cinnamon.

Chef’s Note: Theater meets indulgence with rich, aromatic and timeless flavors. The kind of dessert that brings the whole room to a hush before applause.

here’s something special about sitting by the water at Fish Camp on Lake Eustis. Maybe it’s the way the sunset hits the glassy surface, or the smell of fresh seafood on the grill.

For Marc and Leeann Petitpas, who took ownership of the beloved Tavares restaurant last December, it’s the feeling of home.

Originally from New Brunswick, Canada, the couple is now dual citizens who’ve called Florida home for more than a decade. After growing up around seafood and long careers in the food industry, Marc retired from corporate life—but that didn’t last long.

“I took a couple months, did all my little projects, then realized I needed something to do,” he says. “When we saw Fish Camp for sale, we just fell in love with the location and its uniqueness.”

REVIEW

A New Wave at Fish Camp

Sun on the water, live music in the air and seafood worth slowing down for.

The couple, who both grew up around seafood and food service, knew exactly what they wanted to create: a true waterfront dining experience with “feel at home” hospitality.

“We take pride in treating people the way we’d want to be treated when we go out, so we really put a lot of e ort and hard work into making sure that everybody has a great experience when they’re here with us,” Leeann says.

Their rst year has been about building on what locals already loved while adding their own touches.

“We wanted to kind of learn the culture as it was, then see what needed to be adjusted or built upon,”

Marc says. “So, we gave it some time, listened to people’s feedback and now, we’re at the point where we’ve made a few changes and put our stamp on things.”

Today, the restaurant o ers a lunch menu designed for busy diners looking for a ordable, quality food without a long wait.

“We can have meals out in about 15 minutes, which is pretty reasonable,” Marc says.

Favorites include smash burgers, (especially at lunchtime) and other entrees like seafood boil and the mangrove snapper—a standout among regulars. Other hits are the crab-stu ed ounder, mussels in a white garlic wine sauce, and the blackened grouper Reuben. Every meal is made from scratch by longtime chef Troy Howard,

whose background in both seafood and breakfast shines through.

“He’s an incredible chef,” Leeann says. “We’re lucky to have him.”

Speaking of breakfast, it’s become the newest Fish Camp addition. Every Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 11:30am, guests can pull up by boat or car for mimosas on the dock and dishes like shrimp Benedict, crab cakes, huge strawberry topped hotcakes, cat sh and grits and much more.

When Style’s Chief Photographer Nicole Hamel and I were there to sample some of the menu items, it was extremely hard to pick a favorite. The seafood boil, a new avor pro le for me, was deliciously prepared and so full of avor, color and a sauce so good, I was spooning that up by itself.

“WE TAKE PRIDE IN TREATING PEOPLE THE WAY WE’D WANT TO BE TREATED WHEN WE GO OUT.”
- LEEANN

I think the perfectly seasoned, aky grouper was more my speed, but Nicole, a seafood a cionado from Maine, dug right into the boil like an expert, not even having to ask what each bite was, and she loved it. Overall, we both agreed that our favorite bite of the day was the chicken and wa es o the breakfast menu.

Nicole called it the best chicken and wa es she’s ever had, elevated considerably by the sweet and savory avor of the honey butter sauce the chicken was covered with. She even vowed to return soon with her boyfriend since it’s one of his favorite meals.

“People love going out to breakfast on weekends with family or after church,” Leeann says. “We both love breakfast too and there wasn’t anything like this on the water. If you’re on the lake, we’ll deliver it right to you.”

Each day of the week brings themed specials—Maryland Mondays with crab cakes and snow crab legs, Taco Tuesdays, Rib and Oyster Wednesdays, Steak Night Thursdays, Fish Fridays and Shrimp Fest Saturdays. The upgraded wine list and craft cocktail menu, featuring local spirits from Wicked Dolphin and Yalaha Bootlegging Co., complement the seafood perfectly, as does live music outside on the dock or inside in front of bay windows where you can still enjoy a lake view if the weather is i y.

The Petitpas family’s commitment to the community shows beyond the menu. Inside, one dining room has been transformed into The Gallery, where local artists display and sell their work.

“It’s a way for us to support local talent and make the restaurant feel even more connected to the area,” Leeann says.

Fish Camp also hosts private parties and special events, with banquet space and catering for larger groups arriving by car or even by boat.

Since taking over, the Petitpas have already earned several accolades, awards and recognitions by places like Trip Advisor, Restaurant Guru, the Tavares Chamber of Commerce, The Orlando Sentinel and more. Still, for Marc and Leeann, success is measured less by awards and more by people who return often to try new dishes or a favorite one they enjoy time after time.

“We’re really trying to bring our passion for seafood to this restaurant,” Marc says. “We want to be considered a restaurant with a bar, not a bar with a restaurant.”

THE ART OF THE POUR

BTW’s Crafted Concoctions delivers the ultimate cocktail experience.

op-up bars blending creativity with an exceptional experience are one of the fastest-growing trends in hospitality.

The model is kind of like a tiny, cocktail inspired theme park without rides.

Pop-up bars are often temporary, appearing for a few days or weeks in unconventional spaces such as rooftops or breweries, even inside existing restaurants.

The concept allows bartenders and owners to experiment with new themes and cocktails without the long-term commitment of a full bar. Guests are treated to something novel, eeting and memorable with atmosphere.

The concept has been elevated into a full experience three times per year at BTW’s Crafted Concoctions’ popular brick and mortar location in Tavares. The bar’s owner, Rebecca Doherty, has made seasonal transformations that draw crowds eager to see and enjoy each new creation.

“From the very beginning, my goal has always been to o er something di erent, something next level,”

Rebecca says. “I wanted to create a place that makes people want to come out just to say they’ve been here, that they’ve tried the newest thing, seen the latest transformation and felt part of something unique.”

Her pop-ups range from the whimsical Hatter’s Garden of Curious Curiosities to the spooky Apothecary Spookeasy for Halloween and the festive Miracle on Main for Christmas. Each one turns the familiar bar into an immersive environment that feels completely new.

“The original concept started o much simpler, but once I get an idea in my head, it tends to spiral into something much bigger — in the best way,” she says. “We’re closed on Mondays, and that’s when I do my decorating. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been up on sca olding and surrounded by decorations. It’s like falling down a creative rabbit hole, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

A lifelong hospitality professional, Rebecca was raised in the industry and began waiting tables as a teenager on Disney property. She later spent more than a decade working in construction,

which gave her the skills to design and build the elaborate sets that now de ne her pop-ups. She has also been bartending since the early 2000s. “That combination de nitely shaped how I approach everything we do,” she says.

The reaction from guests has become part of what drives her creativity. “It’s watching people come into the bar for the rst time and seeing the look of awe on their faces,” she says. “You can tell they’re trying to take everything in, but there’s so much to look at that they just keep turning their heads. That reaction never gets old.”

Rebecca’s favorite theme is the Mad Hatter-inspired garden party, which required weeks of construction and creative design. “That one will always

be special to me because I had to build so much from scratch,” she says. “But Miracle has been the one that’s grown us to who we are. It’s helped us see what we’re capable of, and the other pop-ups give us the freedom to keep being creative.”

Each transformation requires weeks of planning and many long nights, but Rebecca says the process remains rewarding. “Ultimately, it’s the joy and awe on our guests’ faces that drives everything,” she says. “When

All is Calm, All is Bright

Funny how peace, tiny fingers and even tinier toes can make starting over feel like a blessing.

his Christmas season feels beautifully and peacefully different. After finally breaking free from a toxic, narcissistic marriage earlier this year, I’m feeling whole again. My faith in God, myself and life in general is at an all-time high.

Most of all, there’s an inexplicable joy in the air I never could’ve imagined fully. His name is Jeremiah, my first grandbaby, and being GiGi to this sweet, smiley four-month-old boy is the best Christmas gift ever. It’s a feeling like when I had my own children yet layered differently.

So, forget hair accessories, purses, cool gadgets or Starbucks cards for me. Nothing compares to Jeremiah’s baby smell, soft-as-silk, peach-fuzzy hair, cute smiles when he recognizes me and little laughs at my best attempts to pull off baby songs, though I’m no Ms. Rachel.

Watching my youngest daughter Julissa step into motherhood has been just as special. From the moment I

learned about the baby and saw her belly grow to being in the delivery room, (where after teasing her fiancé Justin for months about not fainting, I almost did), every second has felt like a miracle.

Julissa is such a loving, patient, dedicated, fierce little mama bear and Justin’s been incredible too. He’s gentle and hands-on, always ready to take over for Julissa when she’s tired. Seeing them together, raising the perfect little soul with unconditional love, gives me extra hope for the future.

These days, I live in a wonderfully full house with my grown kids, Darius and Julissa, their partners Yuri and Justin, little Jeremiah and our combined dogs Remi Lulu, Cinnamon and Opal. My oldest daughter Megan lives nearby and gosh, I love them all. It’s not quite the picture I once thought life would look like in my 50s, but it’s real and I’m grateful.

With that, the 2025 holidays mark a season nothing or no one can ruin. The tree lights sparkle a little brighter,

Christmas songs sound more festive and our home feels refreshingly alive again with laughter, open conversations and the joy of having family and friends—old and new—always welcome. Julissa and I are continuing our tradition of adopting one boy and one girl from an angel tree, but this year, we also have our own little angel to celebrate with.

I’m already looking forward to the years ahead filled with more wonder, magic and maybe one day, more grandbabies to love. For now, however, I’m soaking up every cuddle, coo and my finger being held by a little grandbaby I would do anything for.

This Christmas, surrounded by all the people I love, my heart is full, at its happiest and open to new memories in the making.

All is absolutely calm, all is magnificently bright and it truly feels like everything I’ve ever wanted.
