• Family: Wife Kristin, one son and three daughters
Becoming the Barefoot Ninja: I took my kids to a Ninja Warrior class and ended up competing myself. I placed in a local event, then regionals, then the world championships—all on a whim. I later applied and got selected for American Ninja Warrior, where they called me “The Barefoot Ninja.” I was the rst to run the course barefoot.
Why barefoot?: Shoes often limit the natural movement of your feet so walking barefoot engages the bones, joints, muscles and ligaments, strengthens feet, improves balance, posture and proprioception and reduces injury risk. It also enhances sensory awareness and even mood through “grounding.”
My greatest accomplishments: My wife Kristin and our four kids are my whole world, but other than them, I’d say my education, certi cations, competing in the American Ninja Warrior World Championships and helping pro athletes achieve success.
On American Ninja Warrior: Filming was intense—overnight shoots, cold temps, no idea what obstacles we’d face. In Hollywood, the temperature was about 45° so I was freezing cold while running. I stayed calm and enjoyed the experience. It was one of the ‘funnest’ things I’ve done.

My day job: I opened Soma Health & Performance in 2015 to help people heal from chronic pain using a holistic, assessment-based approach. We treat people of all ages, including elite athletes.
Life goals: Most of my goals—family, business, world competition and reality TV—have already happened. Now I want to keep helping people, see my kids grow, travel and maybe do an Ironman.
I love: Helping people is what gets me out of bed in the morning. It is my true passion, and I have spent over two decades earning the knowledge and skills to be able to help people who really need it.

Born in Alabama and raised in Central Florida from the age of ve, Dr. Weppelmann attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he spent a decade earning multiple degrees, including a PhD in Public and Environmental Health. He later earned his medical degree from Florida International University in Miami and completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Altogether, he dedicated more than 20 years to higher education and training.
“It was fun,” he said. “You live your life along the way. It’s been kind of a journey.”
Although Dr. Weppelmann originally considered a career in infectious disease and pathology, even serving as President of the Pathology Club in medical school, a
single moment during his surgical rotation changed everything.
“I walked in on my rst day and I was with an ophthalmologist, and they were performing cataract surgery,” he says. “It was the coolest thing I ever saw, and I knew right then I was going to be an ophthalmologist.”
After years of training, Dr. Weppelmann returned to Central Florida to be closer to family.
“My brother, sister and my wife’s family all live here, and funny enough, we all have two kids each,” he says. “It’s great having a big family and the grandparents are a big part of everything.”

Although passionate about surgery, Dr. Weppelmann said his treatment philosophy is simple: “What would I want someone to do for my parents? I try to treat every patient as if they were my own parents and always do what’s best for them.”
While outside of work, he enjoys gardening, speci cally orchids, cooking and spending time with his wife and two children.
Dr. Weppelmann is now seeing patients at Mid Florida Eye Center and is excited to carry on the center’s mission of delivering high-quality, compassionate care to the Central Florida community.

Honoring Legacies in Stone
COMBINING CRAFTSMANSHIP WITH COMPASSION
t Set in Stone Monuments, every memorial tells a story—a lasting tribute to a life well-lived. Born from a deeply personal experience, this family-owned business was created to help others avoid the challenges they faced in honoring a loved one’s memory.
“We lost my father, Ted Bland, in February 2022. When my mom and I began looking for a monument, we were told it would take 12 to 18 months to complete,” recalls Allison Hartog. “We ended up traveling to Elberton, Georgia—the granite capital of the world—and paid a signi cant cost just to get it done in
three months. That experience made us realize our community needed a better option.”
Out of that realization came Set in Stone Monuments, founded in 2025 by Colton Hartog and Dr. Teddy Bland. With Allison—a mother and sister—serving as sales manager, the business is rooted in family values and community care.
FULL-SERVICE MONUMENT
DESIGN CRAFTED WITH CARE
From their Mount Dora workshop, the Set in Stone team creates custom monuments using time-honored techniques, modern equipment, and a deep sense of purpose. Every piece is carefully designed and
crafted on-site, ensuring quality and personalization from start to nish.
THEIR OFFERINGS INCLUDE:
• Individual and family headstones
• Columbaria and cremation niches
• Civic monuments and veterans’ memorials
• Historical markers and commemorative plaques
• Custom pet memorials
Planning ahead is becoming more common, with individuals choosing to design their own monuments to spare loved ones the burden later. Pet memorials are also growing in popularity, honoring the deep

bonds people share with their furry companions.
PERSONAL TOUCHES MAKE A DIFFERENCE
“Designing a monument is more than placing a name in stone—it’s about creating a legacy,” says Colton. “We want each one to feel as personal as possible.”
Set in Stone encourages families to be involved in every step of the process. Once granite arrives, families are invited to view it before and after engraving. All sandblasting, laser etching, and design work is done in-house, allowing for faster turnaround and complete creative control. Domestic granite is primarily used, ensuring quality and availability.
For existing monuments, Set in Stone also o ers on-site services— using a mobile sandblaster to add names or dates directly in cemeteries.
From traditional styles to scenic etchings, scriptures, symbols, or even laser-engraved photos, the team ensures each monument re ects the personality and spirit of the individual it honors.
Photographs can also be permanently embedded in porcelain plaques ush with the stone’s surface.
“Our graphics team can replicate images that hold meaning to a family—anything from military symbols to a favorite landscape,” says Allison.
be present, the team welcomes their involvement.
Whether the family attends or not, each monument is delivered with a yellow rose placed gently on top—an homage to Ted Bland, who always brought yellow roses to his wife.
“It’s a special tradition for us,” Allison shares. “That’s why we include a yellow rose in our logo—it’s our way of honoring him.”
PRESERVING MEMORY, HONORING LEGACY
A monument is more than stone— it’s a symbol of love, memory, and connection. At Set in Stone, the team is committed to ensuring that every monument stands as a timeless tribute to the people and stories that shape our lives.
“Stone lasts forever,” says Colton. “When you choose a monument with us, you’re choosing to preserve your loved one’s memory with dignity, respect, and permanence.”
Contact Set in Stone Monuments today to schedule a consultation. Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, with appointments available after hours and on Saturdays upon request.

ARMOR ROOFING & HOME IMPROVEMENT:
From experience to excellence
How Two Industry Veterans Built a Company You Can Trust. PAID PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
he team behind Armor Roo ng & Home
Improvement is a hard-working testimony of putting customers rst.
That’s exactly what Justin Shelton and Bobby Roesch had in mind when they started the company.
If ever a business partnership was meant to be, it’s this one. The two men became friends while working together at a roo ng company in 2003. Knowing what they wanted— and didn’t want—in their own business, they launched Armor Roo ng & Home Improvement in 2022.
Their choice of name and the Armor Roo ng logo was strategic. From day one, the partners’ mission has been to provide homeowners with peace of mind by shielding their homes.
“We had a vision of what we wanted to o er our customers and how we wanted to treat our employees. We took what we learned along the way at the other large roo ng companies and tailored that to operate so that our integrity could shine through,” says Justin.
Bobby was born and raised in Central Florida; he and his wife have two daughters and a son. Justin’s family moved here from Indiana when he was just 6; he and his wife have one son.
Family men who are fully committed to their community, Justin and Bobby lead a skilled team of experienced employees, both in the eld and the o ce.
Management sta rockstars include Eddie McDonald, new construction department manager and senior estimator; Steven Walz, senior project manager; project managers Bo Boyles and Brian Dubicki; Trevor Lane, logistics coordinator; Andrew Miller, senior
roo ng consultant; and roo ng consultants Steven Barnes, Nancy Barnes and Allen Barton.
Cassandra Lamb holds down the fort as o ce manager, while Ashton Walton serves as marketing director.
Roofing of all types
Armor Roo ng & Home
Improvement provides all-in-one convenience that includes full-service roo ng for any type of structure from mobile homes to high-end luxury homes and commercial buildings, as well as home improvement projects.
Fully licensed and insured, Armor Roo ng has built a reputation for customer satisfaction one job at a time. Their team approaches every project with an emphasis on honesty,
transparency, and doing things right the rst time.
What sets Armor apart
By providing outstanding work, attention to detail and clear communication, the company makes each customer’s job a priority.
Armor Roo ng has the highest-level credentials possible with two of the largest roo ng manufacturers, which is good news for homeowners. These credentials include CertainTeed® Select Shingle Master and GAF Master Elite® contractors.
“The industry standard for labor warranty is 3 to 5 years, but with these credentials we can o er up to 25 years labor warranty backed by the manufacturer. Less than two percent of roo ng contractors in North America have the GAF Master Elite® contractors’ credential,” notes Bobby. “We choose to partner with the best manufacturers that we know will service our customers if there ever is a problem—which is rare.”
“We believe in installing a compete manufacturer’s roo ng
system, meaning we utilize a single manufacturers’ roo ng products on each project. We don’t ‘Frankenstein,’ which is mixing together products from di erent manufacturers,” says Justin.
“We’re well versed in complicated commercial scopes and often do the jobs other roo ng contractors don’t,” he adds.
and continuing education we do allow us to stay ahead of the curve on new laws, codes and regulations for our industry,” Justin notes.
says Justin. “You can expect our roo ng consultant to be extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of the process.”
Customers reap the bene ts of Armor Roo ng’s long-standing relationships with industry suppliers.
“We’ve been partners with the largest roo ng supply company in the nation for years. We also have relationships with some of the top-level executives from multiple manufacturers, including shingle, tile, and metal manufacturers,” says Justin, who is also associate vice president of the Home Builders Association of LakeSumter (HBA-LS).
Justin and Bobby take annual continuing education classes with chief building o cials, attorneys, and the Florida Roo ng and Sheet Metal Contractors Association (FRSA).
“We have a meeting every month with all the local building o cials. Codes can be added and changed every three years and municipalities can also make changes. The training
Detail oriented
Detail oriented
Armor Roo ng is a mix of old school and new school. They use the latest technology and products but believe that a hands-on, personal approach is always best.
“WE ARE A ‘BOOTS ON THE ROOF’ TYPE OF COMPANY. FROM THE FIRST CALL TO THE OFFICE TO SET UP THE APPOINTMENT TO WHEN WE COME OUT, WE ALWAYS MAKE SURE TO GET ON THE ROOF TO KNOW WHAT WE’RE DEALING WITH,” SAYS JUSTIN.
It’s common for roo ng companies to use the new satellite services for measuring. Armor Roo ng utilizes these services but doesn’t rely on this alone.
“We don’t feel that’s the best way to o er service to our customers, so we always get on the roof ourselves to inspect and measure it. That way we can detect any damage,”
On new construction projects, the Armor team meets with the builder and general contractor on site to ensure the plans are correct so they can deliver the functional roo ng job as intended and designed.
For all roo ng jobs, after measurements are complete, the customer is given a detailed estimate that clearly states which manufacturer’s products will be used.
Once the customer signs the contract, the scheduling process begins. Cassandra lets the customer know the material delivery date, as well as the project start date.
Each job has a dedicated project manager along with a competent factory trained and experienced crew foreman. The same crew works the entire project. The on-site project manager meets with the customer at the start of the job and keeps them updated throughout.
Most re-roo ng jobs are completed in one to two days. The job site is kept clean all through the process.
“We tarp the driveway and the area where the dump trailer sits. We run magnets throughout the property, including the driveway and ower beds. We also have canopies set up where our workers can cool o ,” says Bobby.
Upon completion, the project manager walks the job to ensure quality and if any issues are recognized, the customer is informed, and those issues are addressed immediately.
“Our goal is to leave the home looking even more beautiful than it was. The customer won’t even know we were there except that they now have a beautiful new roof or completed home improvement project,” Bobby says.
Ahead of the curve
Start to finish
Home improvement
WHEN IT COMES TO HOME IMPROVEMENT AND REPAIR, ARMOR CAN HANDLE ALMOST PROJECT, INCLUDING:
• Stucco and siding
• Facia, soffit and gutters
• Painting (interior and exterior)
• Screen enclosures
• Chimney rebuilds
“We wanted to o er the convenience to homeowners so they can meet with us, and we’ll take care of everything. They don’t have to manage their own jobs because we can o er all these services. Some of the tradesmen we work with are locals we’ve known since middle school,” says Justin.
Storm damage and insurance claims
Armor Roo ng steps up as a partner during tough times by o ering emergency services and insurance claims support to give peace-of-mind to homeowners.
‘We have over 20 years of insurance-related work experience. We are well versed with assisting customers throughout the insurance claims process,” says Justin.
This includes helping homeowners navigate through the tedious and lengthy claims process all the way from initial inspection, tarping the roof to prevent further damage, if needed, doing repairs as stipulated, meeting the insurance adjustor on site and providing the procedure documents to the insurance company for nal payment.
“Most people don’t realize a normal insurance claim can add 20 to 40 hours of additional leg work behind the scenes that has to be done. We meet the insurance adjuster on site to point out the damage. Because of our knowledge with local
building codes and manufacturer installation instructions, we can help ease the customer’s mind,” Justin notes.
If storm damage extends beyond the roof, Armor Roo ng can address the damage, provide a proper estimate and complete the repairs, as needed.
Local matters
Local matters
Armor Roo ng purchased a staple of Leesburg--the old Lenhart Electrical building. The company is proud of its standing in the community and works to reinforce those connections every day.
“So many of the large local roofers have been bought by hedge fund companies, but local matters. We’re a locally owned company that gives back to our community and helps as much as we can,” says Justin.
Armor Roo ng recently raised 1,196 pounds of food for the food pantry, Lake Cares, and is planning a back-to-school drive.

THEATER STAGE TO THE and Beyond
The Villages Theatre Company raises spirits—and thousands for charity.
STORY:
t’s only natural to mention The Villages Theater Company and Judy Prior in the same breath. After all, the pint-sized dynamo has been a vital part of the popular club for the last two decades.
Under Judy’s leadership, The Villages Theater Company (TVTC)
MCFARLAND
has evolved from a social club to a 501(c)(3) nonpro t organization that bene ts over two dozen area charities. Members put on outstanding performances for the public and participate in theatre-related activities throughout the year.
Born in Rhode Island, Judy has loved performing arts since starting dance class at age 5. She took dance until age 14 and performed in school plays. Her claim to fame was competing in the Miss Rhode Island pageant in her town. “I won Miss Cranston in 1968 and then was third runner-up in the

Miss Rhode Island pageant. I won Miss Congeniality twice, but at 4’9” I really didn’t have a shot,” Judy laughs.
She majored in microbiology at the University of Rhode Island. After graduating in 1967, she began working in research but quickly realized it didn’t t her animated personality.
“There was no one to talk with. I took a pay cut to be a teacher. One day I was working in a lab; two weeks later I was standing in front of a class,” says Judy, who taught junior high for three years before becoming a high school chemistry teacher.
She married Jimmy Prior in 1969. Their daughter Rebecca was born in 1974.
Judy taught for 28 years in Warwick, Rhode Island. After retiring, in 2002 she and Jimmy moved to Orlando, where Rebecca was living.
Discovering The Villages
When Rebecca and her family moved out of that neighborhood, Judy had an idea after visiting a friend who’d moved to The Villages.
“When I saw all the activities, I said, ‘That’s where I want to go.’ We moved there in 2004 and have lived in the same house all this time,” Judy says.
She was taking a tap dance class when another participant invited her to check out the theatre company.
“My brother was doing community theatre in his town and having so much fun. I went and the rest is history. I tried out a lot in the beginning and got parts in a few plays. I started volunteering, got on the board and then took over as president in 2011,” says Judy, who also performs with their traveling troupe Shows-to-Go, which performs for parties and other clubs in The Villages.
She thought she’d just help out for a while, but she’s been president ever since. TVTC obviously knows a winner when it has one.
TVTC was founded in 1992. All members must be Villages residents. In addition to acting, the company builds their own sets for most plays.

The owner of Dunstan & Son Plumbing in Leesburg believes that every customer deserves oldfashioned service that goes above and beyond what they expect.
Most people consider running water and working toilets essential. When those “must haves” aren’t working, they turn to an experienced company they can trust. That’s why homeowners in Central Florida have been using Dunstan & Son Plumbing since 1922.
A four-generation family business is rare these days, but
that’s Dunstan & Son. The trusted neighborhood plumber has been taking care of business in Lake and Sumter counties for over a century and provides:
• 24/7 emergency services
• Leak detection and repair
• Water heater replacement and maintenance
• Drain cleaning and repair
• Propane and natural gas repairs
• Dependable service
A master plumber for 32 years, John Synder began working at
Dunstan & Son in 1979 as an 18-year-old senior in high school. He’s worked there ever since and bought the business in 1999.
Dunstan & Son Plumbing has won “Best of the Best” in its category as long as Lake & Sumter Style has held the popular annual vote recognizing area businesses.
John says the reason is outstanding service and praises his team for that. With 24 people on sta , Dunstan & Son’s long-time employees operate more like a close family than a business. Over half the employes have been with the company more than 20 years.

hen you step into PayPer-Klip Salon & Spa in Eustis, the atmosphere is anything but typical. Brightly colored metal art lines the walls, stylists stay busy at their stations and laughter is a constant. It all adds up to a place that feels genuinely welcoming.
Owner Jessica Merchant opened Pay-Per-Klip in March 2020 with a clear vision: quality work, honest pricing and a warm environment for every person who walks through the door.
“Everyone is welcome here,” she says. “Whether you’re a new client or following a stylist on their professional journey, we truly appreciate anyone who comes in. Clients will even drive here just to hang out or see how we’re doing. Some have been with me since the beginning of my journey in 2006 and have watched my children grow up.”
Locally operated from the start, Pay-Per-Klip has become the kind of salon where clients and stylists feel right at home. Built on trust, professionalism and a love for what they do, the teamwork shows every time someone leaves feeling their best.

“We believe in a lot of education, keeping up, nurturing our new stylists and always looking for new talent,” Jessica says. “We are truly a team. That’s why the sta genuinely loves working here and why clients pick up on that easy, collaborative energy.”
It’s common to see stylists mentoring each other, learning side by side without pressure. Ana, a Senior stylist, says she’s felt a close camaraderie that was missing in other spaces.
“I love the fact that we help each other here,” she says. “If one stylist is stronger at a type of color or cut, we are always really happy to work together or recommend one another.”
The team handles everything from precision cuts and creative color to Brazilian Blowouts, which is a specialty smoothing treatment. Waxing, plus lash and brow tinting are also on the menu.
Prices are clear and posted by stylist level so guests can pick what ts their needs and budget. Studio and Designer stylists are newly licensed and closely mentored, while Senior

“It’s about more than just hair,” Jessica says. “It’s the con dence people feel when they walk out the door. We’re their con dants and we take that seriously. What’s said in that chair stays here. We understand the trust people place in us with their hair and their personal stories.”

At the end of the day, Pay-Per-Klip is about more than cuts, color or those much-loved massages. It’s a place built on community ties where stylists feel valued and people leave with more than a fresh look. Lake County’s battle to stop fentanyl before it ends another life.

80,000
That’s how many Americans died from drug overdoses in a 12-month period ending November 2024, according to the CDC. In Florida alone, the toll was roughly 5,400.
Every one of those people had a name. A story. Family members who still wake up in the middle of the night, longing for someone who isn’t coming home.
Lake County Sheri O ce Capt. Patton says the numbers are not only devastating, but alarming. “It’s not just happening in big cities. It’s happening right here,” he says. “Every overdose we respond to is a tragedy that didn’t have to happen.”
Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine, is at the center of this storm. It’s often mixed — without the user’s knowledge — with
other drugs like heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana or pressed into counterfeit pills resembling Xanax or Oxycodone. Just two milligrams — the equivalent of a few grains of salt — can kill.
“You don’t have to speci cally be a fentanyl addict,” Patton says. “You just have to be unlucky.”
Lake County saw 52 fatal overdoses in 2021.
By 2023, that number dropped to 19. So far in 2025 (from January 1-June 22) there were three con rmed
Patton and his team hope that trend continues, but they’re not letting their guard down.
“Every call we respond to is a chance to save a life,” he says.
“We’re seeing people of all ages.
Teenagers, grandparents, parents; no one is immune.”
Lake County deputies now carry Narcan (naloxone), a fast-acting medication that can reverse an opioid overdose when sprayed into the nose. Every deputy is trained to administer it to civilians, themselves or each other in case of accidental exposure.
That training has saved lives … including the life of a deputy who collapsed after a tra c stop.
The deputy wore gloves while patting down the suspect, who was suspected of using or transporting narcotics, but it wasn’t enough. After securing the suspect in his patrol car and removing his gloves, the o cer either inhaled fentanyl residue or had it on his clothes or hands.
the spot, one on the way and one at the hospital — but he survived.
The threat is so severe that even the department’s K9s are trained to detect fentanyl — in trace amounts because dogs aren’t immune to its e ects.
“I spoke to one our handlers and he said the dogs would have the same symptoms as humans and they would use the Narcan on them as they would a human,” Patton says.
“He started having trouble breathing and said he felt faint,” Patton says. Other deputies promptly administered Narcan. It took three doses — one on
Lake County Sheri Peyton Grinnell has made fentanyl enforcement a top priority by focusing e orts on dismantling mid- to high-level tra cking operations. The sheri ’s narcotics task force has seized more than 50 pounds of dangerous drugs in the past two years through partnerships with federal agencies like the DEA, FBI and HSI and police departments in Clermont, Leesburg, Eustis and Mount Dora.
“Sheri Grinnell’s mission is clear: protect our community and protect our deputies,” Patton says.
That protection includes supplying deputies with free Narcan through Florida’s Helping Emergency Responders Obtain Support (HEROS), program which has distributed more than 850,000 doses statewide since its inception.
The impact has been great in Lake County. According to Patton, fentanyl deaths have dropped dramatically due to rapid response by trained deputies and easier community access to Narcan, which is now available over the counter.
“People can get it from their pharmacy. You can keep it in your glove box, your purse, anywhere,” he says. “You might never need it, but if you do, you’ll be grateful you had it.”
Still, the danger, silent and merciless, persists.
Fentanyl comes in powders, pills and even liquid form. It’s been found in nasal sprays, eye drops, paper or candy. Because it’s cheap to manufacture and incredibly potent, tra ckers use it to stretch or replace other drugs despite the potential for deadly consequences.
“You think you’re taking a Xanax or smoking marijuana and don’t know it’s been contaminated. You’ll never know until it’s too late,” Patton says.
That’s what makes this drug di erent and more dangerous.
Even as national trends show signs of improvement, the crisis isn’t over. According to the DEA—information supplied by Patton—7 out of 10 pills tested in 2023 contained a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl. In 2024, that dropped slightly to 5 out of 10, still far too high.
Public health e orts are beginning to make a di erence. Wider naloxone distribution, increased funding and access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs are helping. Policy changes have made it easier to obtain methadone and buprenorphine, key tools in treating opioid addiction and more and more centers or programs that o er support and treatment, are popping up throughout Florida, including Lake.
That’s why education is as important as enforcement, Patton says. He wants parents to talk to

their kids. He wants young people to understand that today’s drugs are more deadly than they were 10 years ago.
“It’s not about experimenting anymore. Sometimes you don’t get a second chance,” Patton says.
Lake County has also sought justice through Florida’s “Death by Distribution” statute — a law allowing prosecutors to charge drug dealers with homicide if someone dies from drugs they supplied. Several cases like that have resulted in lengthy prison terms, including one recent 20-year sentence.
“This sends a clear message that you’ll be held accountable,” Patton says, adding that the department remains cautiously hopeful and determined to curb overdoses.
“We’ve made progress, but we’re not done,” he says. “Every life matters. If we can save one more son, one more daughter, one more parent, then we’ll keep ghting.”

ames Hassell doesn’t shy away from the truth — not in front of students and de nitely not about himself.
“I was a scoundrel,” he says. “The essence of a dirtbag. I lied, I stole, I manipulated. I worked and every dime
I made was going to drugs—whatever it took to get high.”
Today, James, 28, is nearly three years sober.
“I started using when I was 12 or 13 in middle school, and by 14 or 15 I was already addicted to pills, including Adderall from a cousin. My brain wasn’t even developed yet,” he says.
What followed was a downward spiral: marijuana, alcohol, prescription painkillers, heroin. Then came fentanyl—the synthetic opioid now fueling a national crisis.
“The rst time I used it, I didn’t even know what it was,” James says. “A coworker pulled over and crushed up what I thought was cocaine. He said, ‘It’s fentanyl.’ I said, ‘All I hear is that this
stu kills people.’ He told me it only does if you do too much. I believed him.”
James was instantly hooked. Soon he was using daily—multiple times a day— often mixing fentanyl with Kratom, a plant-based drug he wrongly thought was safe. He thought he was saving money but eventually spent up to $400 a day chasing a high that never lasted.
“The high from fentanyl, especially when mixed with other drugs, oors you. It’s immediate, but short lived. You’re like asleep standing up you’re so high out of your mind,” he says. “There are TikTok videos out there of people like that, they call them ‘zombie people’ and I didn’t know I was doing that, but my family noticed. That’s when they knew something was really wrong.”
At his lowest, James weighed less than 100 pounds—he’d developed an eating disorder as a result of his drug use. He was wanted, found and luckily spared by a dealer he owed money to. He couldn’t hold a job. He forged a check in his mother’s name but after the bank called her, she gave him two
tools and confidence to avoid drugs, violence and hopelessness and find their purpose.

effects of an opioid overdose.
Floridians can find naloxone for their community by calling DOH-Lake at 352.771.5500.
“We couldn’t let it end,” Scott says. “This is life and death. Teens are getting pills off Snapchat, weed laced with fentanyl—they have no idea what they’re playing with.”
The program isn’t about scare tactics. Scott and his team, including mentors like James, focus on real conversations, helping kids set meaningful goals and building emotional resilience—like learning how to handle life’s challenges, knowing it’s okay to feel what they

feel, but then to ask for help when they need it.
“When James walks in, the room changes,” Scott says. “He’s real. He’s lived what they’re facing and he doesn’t sugarcoat things. They can relate to him.”
“I love talking to the kids,” he says. “There are some that are probably already using. I know that; I was them. But if I can save one person from the things I had to learn the hard way, then sharing my story is worth it.”
When students ask if he still craves drugs, James is honest. “I did at one time and I tried Kratom once after rehab, and it did nothing for me. I don’t want any of that anymore,” he says.
He also admits it’s not always easy to revisit the past.
“Sometimes, it’s like I’m reliving some of the darkest times in my life. It’s hard but I get through it because I know I’m OK now.”
He also knows he could’ve died.
“It’s surreal to look back and realize I was doing the exact thing that’s killing over tens of thousands of Americans every year,” he says. “That could’ve been me.”
James says the things he feels the most shame from is how he felt about his kids, but then he pauses, and sees it was kind of a godsend.
“My ex would try and get me to see I was missing out on my kids when I was using, but I didn’t want the burden of taking care of them,” he says. “I feel bad about it, but I’m glad their mom made the choices she did when it came to not leaving them alone with me because I could’ve put them in danger. I’m grateful for where I am now and that I can be a good dad to them.”
His message to students is simple yet hard-hitting: “You matter. It’s OK to not be OK but just don’t give up on yourself, especially by letting drugs take over your life.”
If any Lake County school would like this message shared on their campus to students, please email Powerhouse Youth Project at scott@powerhouse.org. For more information, visit www.powerhouse.org.

Recognizing the signs of overdose can save lives. These include:
PINPOINT PUPILS
COLD OR CLAMMY SKIN BLUE LIPS OR NAILS
SLOWED OR STOPPED BREATHING GURGLING OR CHOKING SOUNDS LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS LIMP BODY
If you see these symptoms:
1. Call 911 immediately.
2. Administer Narcan if available.
3. Try to keep the person awake and breathing.
4. Lay them on their side to prevent choking.
5. Stay until help arrives.
Florida’s Good Samaritan Act (Fla. Stat. § 893.21) provides legal immunity to people who, in good faith, seek medical help or administer Narcan during a suspected overdose. This includes protection from prosecution for simple drug possession and violations of probation or parole, if discovered as a result of seeking help.

Celebrating 100 Years
On September 10, 2025, The First National Bank of Mount Dora (FNBMD) will celebrate its centennial by hosting a community event in Mount Dora’s Donnelly Park Building, marking 100 years of steadfast banking and community support. But for residents in Lake County, this is more than a bank anniversary. It represents a century of shared memories, resilience, and community growth.
ROOTS IN THE ROARING ’20S
In September of 1925, Mount Dora Bank and Trust Company opened its doors in the historic “Old Bank Building” at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Donnelly Street in Downtown Mount Dora. The building featured imposing arched windows and an interior adorned with Alabama marble and bronze teller cages, a design meant to convey trust in an era when depositing cash in a bank account was a new concept. After changing to a national bank chartered in 1927, the Bank was renamed
The First National Bank of Mount Dora and solidi ed its place as Mount Dora’s premier bank.
NAVIGATING CHALLENGES THROUGH THE DECADES
From its earliest days, FNBMD faced trials that tested nearly every community institution. During the Great Depression, for example, when more than 9,000 banks failed across the country, FNBMD kept its doors open and o ered stability and con dence to the residents
and businesses of Mount Dora. Next came World War II and the postwar boom, the fads of the 1960s and 1970s, and the economic prosperity and birth of technology in the 1980s. Through it all, the Bank remained a trusted nancial partner to the community.
The 1990s were known for peace, prosperity, and the dot.com bubble. In Lake County, the nineties were also known for the “Storm of the Century,” when Mount Dora was hit by a series of tornados and lost power for days. FNBMD remained open to help customers access funds to rebuild. And during the 2008 housing recession and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, FNBMD helped residents and businesses keep their homes and businesses through loan modi cations and the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).
“Every decade has brought its own challenges. Through it all,
The First National Bank of Mount Dora has supported the community as a stable nancial institution, and we’ll continue to do that for years to come,” said Bob White, current Chairman of the Board, President and CEO.
SERVING THE HEART OF LAKE COUNTY
The growth of FNBMD has followed the evolution of Mount Dora, from a quaint turn-of-the-century town to a vibrant lakeside city with historic charm. Today, FNBMD operates three full-service bank branches in Mount Dora and Sorrento, a Trust & Investments Department in Mount Dora, and a wealth management office in Winter Garden.
What truly de nes FNBMD, however, is its unwavering dedication to ve-star customer service. “I’ve worked at FNBMD for more than

40 years, and our commitment to customer service is what remains consistent,” said Lori Ross, Chief Operating O cer. “As a community bank, customers really do become family, and over the years, there have been many cases where we helped make it possible for customers to own a home, buy a car, or send their kids to college.”
Another characteristic of FNBMD is an ongoing spirit of giving back to Lake County. Each year, the Bank supports worthy initiatives including the Lake Cares Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity home builds, Lake County school drives, Thanksgiving food drives and holiday toy drives for children and families in need, and much more. These e orts re ect FNBMD’s belief that community banks can have a direct impact on the health and stability of the communities they serve.

A GREAT PLACE TO BANK – AND WORK
A number of FNBMD employees have worked at the bank for 20 years or more. It’s not uncommon for employees to start at one position and work their way up to leadership positions in the same or di erent areas.
Sandi Nelson, for example, began working at FNBMD more than 30 years ago as a bank teller in the Sorrento branch. Over time she moved from teller to Customer Service Representative to Assistant O ce Manager to Loan O cer. In 2018 she moved to the main o ce on Donnelly Street and just this year was promoted to Assistant Vice President, Commercial Loan Assistant and Lender.
“What I love most about working at FNBMD is de nitely the people,” she said. “We truly are a family. We help each other through whatever is going on in our lives - work or
personal. There is no better place to be than part of the FNBMD family.”
Kendall Davenport is another example. She has worked at the bank since 2017, starting in Loan Operations and then moving into various leadership roles and expanding her skills. Today, she is Vice President & Compliance
O cer, overseeing Loan Operations, Compliance, and Marketing.
What she appreciates most about FNBMD is growth opportunities and career development.
“Management wants all employees, regardless of position, to be successful,” she said. “If we nd outside training that would help us excel in our current roles, management is happy to provide that training. Here, no one is ‘just a number.’ Our senior management

LOOKING AHEAD
Today, FNBMD o ers modern banking tools such as online and mobile banking while still maintaining the trusted, personal customer relationships and community focus that have de ned its legacy. Looking ahead to the next 100 years, FNBMD is planning more of the same: enhancing digital banking capabilities while preserving the personal service for which the bank is known; and giving back to the community through investments in housing, nancial literacy, small business development, and other community initiatives.

Nineteen-year-olds Ryan Oldham and Easton Workman met in middle school and started making music in Ryan’s bedroom with an iPad and a shared love for layered soundscapes.

These refrains have experimental, genre-blurring sound built on honesty, curiosity and a surprising willingness to evolve.
Ryan, now at Clemson University, is the band’s multi-instrumentalist and primary songwriter. Easton, named after the baseball bat, attends Lander University
Despite being miles apart during the school year, the two have maintained their creative momentum, writing and producing collaboratively
“We’ve gotten good at adjusting,” Ryan says. “Sometimes we’ll record separately, other times we’ll just work for hours

naturally wherever they are.
As for the name Flora’s Embrace, it wasn’t just a poetic choice from ction. “It felt like a short story,” Easton
Their second album Sense the Petrichor captures that philosophy. The title, a nod to the earthy scent that follows rain, mirrors the album’s tone of being fresh, re ective and quietly stirring.
Songs shift textures with ease, moving from ambient and atmospheric to grounded and melodic. One track might echo the storytelling simplicity of Tom Petty, while the next leans into dream pop haze or indie rock grit.
“We don’t really worry about tting into a genre,” Ryan says. “It just diverges.”
That freedom is evident in the album’s track list, which plays more like a mood journal than a traditional record.
In uenced by artists like Tame Impala, Twenty One Pilots and The Beatles, Ryan and Easton blend introspection with edge, layering lyrics that resonate with emotion but avoid cliché.
It’s not polish that sets them apart, but a rare self-awareness. At 19, they’re already comfortable with change and willing to shift direction if the music calls for it. That mindset, paired with their evolving sound, makes Flora’s Embrace promising.
“Each song is a time capsule of that moment,” Ryan says.
“Sense the Petrichor” is streaming now on Bandcamp.

Citrus Hearing Clinic Now Using New Technology and the Latest Research to Manage Tinnitus.
PAID
f you struggle with tinnitus, don’t give up and think you just have to live with it. Relief is available and treatment options are making a real difference.
Thanks to new research and cuttingedge technology, the auditory experts at Citrus Hearing Clinic can create effective personalized care plans.
“Even if you’ve been seen for tinnitus in the last couple years, there are new options and treatment possibilities,” says practice founder Dr. Laura Pratesi, Au.D.
“It’s amazing because it’s based on science and real research so treatment can be tailored to the individual. We’re bringing patients back in for verification to ensure treatments are working. This allows us to make real-time adjustments in managing their tinnitus,” says Dr. Pratesi.
Citrus Hearing is one of just three centers in Florida that offers the FDA-approved Lenire® device, which uses bimodal neuromodulation to soothe tinnitus.
The clinic is considered a Black Belt Provider, meaning it’s one of the top private tinnitus practices in the country.
It’s the only Florida practice recognized by Modern Tinnitus Specialty Centers.
In a majority of patients, tinnitus is caused by an abnormality of the ear. Citrus Hearing utilizes ultra-high frequency testing to explore damage to the auditory system. Such damage may not be identified by standard hearing tests from “big box” retailers.
“We’re also tracking biometric data using wearable technology to learn what can influence a patient’s tinnitus. For example, research shows if your heart rate spikes or your blood pressure is too high, it can affect your tinnitus. Your stress level and how you’re sleeping can also affect it,” explains Dr. Pratesi.
Intensive auditory testing and data tracking are game changers for patients. The goal is not to sell someone a hearing aid, but to identify the cause of their tinnitus and any contributing factors, in order to create the best individualized treatment.
At Citrus Hearing, every staff member-including Dr. Pratesi and Dr. Teresa Parsons, Au.D,--has hearing loss and wears hearing
aids. This mission is personal for them; they thrive on finding answers for patients.
“Exceptional hearing care is worth traveling for. We’ve attracted patients from 36 states and 9 countries who trust our expertise for their hearing health,” says Dr. Pratesi.
Citrus Hearing specializes in hearing loss, balance therapy, tinnitus management and patient education. In addition to in-person visits, the clinic offers virtual consultations. Call to make a consultation and learn how your

CAMILA ANTONSANTI-SOTO
Lake Minneola High junior volleyball player turning heads.

hen Camila AntonsantiSoto brings more than talent when she steps onto the volleyball court, she carries the legacy of a family that bet everything on her potential.
A junior at Lake Minneola High School, Camila has emerged as one of Central Florida’s brightest high school volleyball stars on a journey that began more than a thousand miles away in Puerto Rico, where she began playing volleyball at 8 years old.
She quickly outgrew the local circuit, and after winning an AAU National Championship with her Puerto Rican 10U team in 2019, she and her family made a bold decision.
“My parents saw the potential in me and my brother Fabian early on,” Camila says. “They knew if we were going to chase our dreams, we needed to be where the opportunities were.”
So, in 2021, Eric Antonsanti and Soelimir Soto — both former professional basketball players in Puerto Rico — moved their family to Clermont, a place that o ered their children the best shot at athletic and academic success.
It didn’t take long for Camila to prove that mom and dad made the right decision.
Soon after settling in, Camila helped East Ridge Middle School win back-to-back District Championships, and her club USAV Girls Jr. Nationals quali ed for the 13U open division.
Now entering her junior season, Camila is coming o a breakout year at Lake Minneola in which she led her team to a District Championship with 137 kill shots, 22 service aces, and 190 assists.

irst Academy-Leesburg multi-sport athlete Logan Stalvey is known as a reliable leader.
Logan, a senior who plays football and basketball, has built a reputation through hard work, consistency and a team- rst attitude. Whether he’s making tackles under the lights on Friday or shooting lay-ups in the gym, Logan brings the same focus and energy that’s made him a key part of the Eagles’

His athletic roots run deep. Athletics weren’t just encouraged in the Stalvey household, they were part of the architecture. His mother, Gina Stalvey, played softball and volleyball at Leesburg High. His father excelled in football, basketball and track & eld at Trenton High. “If you want to be good at something work as hard as possible,” Logan says. “Don’t just show up and think you’ll be good at it. It’s a philosophy that’s guided him through injuries, long practices, and the pressure of leadership. Last season, a shoulder injury cost him ve football games, but it didn’t break him. Instead, it led him to discover a new passion: sports medicine, inspired by First Academy’s athletic trainer Kari Earwaker, who helped guide him through recovery and back onto the court.
“Kari didn’t just help me physically, she reminded me how much I love the game,” Logan re ects. “Now, I want to help others the way she helped me.”
Logan maintains a 3.5 GPA, is active in Student Government, National Honor Society, and Key Club, and is set on studying sports medicine after graduation.
First Academy-Leesburg isn’t just a school to him, it’s home – a place he’s attended since kindergarten. A place where teachers know your name, and where kindness is part of the curriculum.
“It’s a special place,” he says. “You feel supported here. The teachers, the coaches, they care.”
Among those mentors, Logan highlights two who’ve helped shape him most: Athletic Director Don Birdsall, whose quiet wisdom often arrives right when it’s needed, and head football coach Canh Bui, the man who introduced him to the sport that now de nes so much of who he is.
As Logan steps into his senior year, he knows the team around him is young. But that doesn’t concern him. Quite the opposite, he sees it as a blueprint, an opportunity to lay the groundwork for something greater.
“I’m excited to see where the program goes,” he says. “And I just hope I can be the kind of leader who helps build something lasting.”

FUELED RISE
He’s not chasing fame—he’s chasing purpose. And that’s what makes Nate Rembert’s story so powerful.
STORY: KYLE COPPOLA
PHOTOS: NICOLE HAMEL
ate Rembert doesn’t need a stadium full of fans to tell him that he made it.
For him, success is not about being in the spotlight. It’s all about the path upward from late nights watching his mother juggle jobs, his introduction to football in youth league and a relentless drive to not just play the game but build a life out of it.
Nate didn’t take the typical route to Jackson State, where he’s now a standout wide receiver—it’s been a road marked by challenges and powered by his unshakable faith in God and in himself.
Born and raised in Eustis, Nate’s rst taste of football was when he played youth football for Coach Johnnie Saunders. “Johnnie was the one who really got me into it,” Nate says. “Playing with Coach Johnnie helped me fall in love with the game.”
Saunders wasn’t the only guiding light. Nate’s mother, Laura Rembert, was the steady force behind the scenes. Dad wasn’t always around, so Laura picked up extra shifts at Publix, Kohl’s and anywhere she could to provide for her children. Today, Laura is a Mount Dora High School teacher by day and jack-of-alltrades by night.
“She is who I look up to the most,” Nate says. “She personi es what it means to work hard. It’s not always been easy for her, but her love shines so bright. The dedication that woman has is incredible.”
In 2021, Nate transferred to Wildwood Middle High School to join friends Nate Mikell and Alfred Corbin on the basketball court and
ended up capturing a Florida state championship. “We came together our senior year knowing we could win it all,” Nate recalls. “We believed it, we worked for it and we did it.”
Prior to achieving his basketball goals, Nate rediscovered his love for football under then-head coach Vincent Brown, Sr. who converted the former JV quarterback to a new position.
“Coach Brown saw I had great
Nate initially hoped to continue with basketball in college, but his dream didn’t materialize. Too small. Rather than dwell on disappointment, he pivoted back to football. That’s when Edward Waters University, a private, Christian HBCU in Jacksonville, gave him a shot.
“YOU DON’T AND GIVE UP YOUR TIME IF YOU’RE NOT SOMETHING.”
He made the most of it.
receptions for 730 yards, 22.81 yards per reception and eight touchdowns
His breakout season earned him a spot at Mississippi Valley
historic SWAC roots and the alma mater of NFL legend Jerry Rice. Nate didn’t just t in at Mississippi thrived. In 11 games, he notched 70
receptions for 1,038 yards, averaging nearly 87 yards per game and joining an elite group of just ve State receivers – including Jerry Rice – to top the 1,000-yard mark in a season.
“It was surreal,” Nate says. “I was even nominated for the Conerly Trophy, given to the best college football player in Mississippi. Only 10 players get that honor. The winner was
was more than just a step up, it felt like destiny.
“Jackson State feels like Eustis,” he says. “It’s close-knit, people look out for each other and there’s just a sense of community. I feel at home here.”
Nate’s journey is about more than stats or championships. It’s about inspiration, especially for kids back home.
For Nate, everything starts with faith. Around his neck, he wears a dog tag engraved with an inspirational thought based on Luke 1:37 that’s guided him through dark days and bright moments: “Faith doesn’t make things easier; it makes things possible.”
He looked up to Keon Ellis, another Eustis native who de ed the odds and now plays for the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. “To see a kid from our town make it, that’s inspiring,” he says. “It shows other young kids that if you put in the work, you can get there.”
Nate regularly returns home, often working out at South Sumter High and mentoring younger athletes.
DOESN’T MAKE THINGS EASIER; IT MAKES THINGS POSSIBLE.
-BASED ON LUKE 1:37
“I met a young guy there recently,” Nate recalls. “I asked him, ‘Why do you play the game?’ He didn’t have an answer. So, I told him, ‘You don’t sweat through summer practices and give up your time if you’re not working
His message to young players is simple yet powerful: “Know why you’re doing this, why you play the game. Have a purpose. Mine is to get to the NFL. But more than that, it’s to honor God and everything He’s
He credits not just his mother but also his father, Craig Rembert, who has stepped up in recent years to support him. His sisters, Natalie (a Eustis High state champion in softball who graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University) and older sister Madison (a veterinary assistant trained at Lake Tech), are constant sources of pride and motivation.
And then there’s Labrica Everett, mother of South Sumter alum and Texas A&M player Rashad “Tom Tom” Johnson, Jr. “She was like a second mom to me,” Nate says. “Always helping, always there. They don’t make too many women like Labrica.”
And of course there’s Chiquita Patterson. “I call her my bonus mother, she’s someone who took me in while at Wildwood and who ended up passing from cancer. She was and still is a big motivational piece in this journey of mine,” Nate says.
As he pushes toward the NFL, Nate is thinking long-term. He’s studying business and dreams of owning his own company. “I’ve always liked working for myself,” he says. “That’s something I want to do, build something of my own.”
In his downtime, he nds peace in simple pleasures like shing, feeling the breeze at the beach and spending quiet moments in re ection.
Nate’s story is far from over, but it’s already one worth telling. This small-town kid with big dreams has overcome setbacks, leaned on faith and risen on the strength of a mother’s love, a community’s belief and his own unwavering spirit.
“I didn’t have the easiest road,” he says. “But I know now it doesn’t have to be easy to be possible.”

Vision loss is more widespread than you might imagine.
Over 7 million Americans have vision loss that can’t be corrected, and more than 1 million people in the U.S. live with blindness.
Eliminating barriers and opening doors to those with vision loss and the businesses that serve them.
Here in Central Florida, New Vision for Independence is determined to make a di erence in these lives. The non-pro t organization has two main missions:
• Provide support services and foster independence in those with vision impairment
• Provide community education and training to help businesses improve their interaction and customer service with the visually impaired
Founded in 2005, New Vision celebrated its 20th anniversary in July.
The organization serves Lake, Sumter and The Villages; its support services and vision rehabilitation are available to anyone with visual impairment.
Community education is vital. New Vision o ers special events to inform the public and help alleviate the fear and stigma around blindness. Customized training for businesses helps them cultivate great customer experience for people with vision loss.
Among the next annual special events are “White Cane Day” (October 15, 2025) and “Dining in the Dark” (March 5, 2026). Learn more at the Special Events page on the New Vision website.
friendly practices gain more customers; they also encourage a sense of unity and compassion.
“People don’t think they know a lot of blind people, but we all know people on the vision-loss spectrum, such as someone who has glaucoma or cataracts,” says Chantel Buck, President & CEO of New Vision for Independence.
“Unfortunately, many people don’t realize that someone who is blind or vision-impaired is going to the movies or clothes shopping for themselves. They’re going to the grocery store, pharmacy and tness center. Not only are they utilizing these businesses, but they are more likely to do so if they are treated with dignity,” Buck explains.
New Vision o ers blindness awareness training to help businesses adopt better practices when dealing with customers who have vision loss.
For example, during training sessions at the Eustis and Leesburg branches of Addition Financial Credit Union, employees were given tasks to complete while blindfolded. The idea is to get the business thinking about how to make such tasks easier for

vision-impaired customers and how to o er assistance as needed.
“These lessons bring some humility into it, as the employees realize the tasks are do-able for someone who can’t see but with some modi cations,” says Buck. She emphasizes that when o ering help, doing so with dignity is crucial.
“People with disabilities are twice as likely to shop where they feel welcome,” Buck adds. “It often comes down to just being kind and descriptive.”
For example, at movie theatres nationwide, guests can check out a DAS Receiver (Dolby Accessibility Solution) from the guest services desk.
The device, which is about the size of a smart phone and includes headphones, combines Closed Captions and Assistive Listening Content into one easy-to-use unit. It provides an audio description of what is happening on screen when there isn’t dialogue or during a silent scene in the movie.
However, at AMC Lake Square 12, they take it a step further.
“About seven years ago, we started doing monthly shows that would play the Assistive Listening Content through the speakers. That was the rst time I had ever experienced a movie that way. Now we try to include these types of shows with the most

AXY Awards
Since 2016, New Vision has recognized area businesses that provide excellent customer service to people who are blind or have low vision by giving out AXY Awards.
AXY is derived from the word “accessible.”
“AXY Awards shine a light on businesses that prioritize accessibility, ensuring individuals with vision loss can navigate their services with dignity and ease,” says Buck.

This year’s AXY Awards winners include Addition Financial Credit Union; Culver’s in Mount Dora, and AMC Lake Square 12 theatre in Leesburg.
“Think of how you’d want a store to treat your grandma with macular degeneration who took an Uber there for the rst time by herself to feel independent,” Buck proposes. “What does your business need to serve that person?”
Providing excellent customer service to people with vision loss doesn’t have to be hard. Often, it comes down to empowering businesses with tips, resources, and even training.
“We want to be a resource for our community businesses. Need help? Let’s grab some co ee,” says Buck.
“Our restaurant is very open concept so it’s easy to get in and out without a lot of congestion. This allows more space to accommodate customers, and all our entry points have braille writing. We’re open to hearing from any vision-impaired member of the community about anything that would help us prioritize any changes.”

UF Health is Changing Lives with Comprehensive Spine Care
Restoring function, preserving motion and improving quality of life.
PROMOTIONAL
obility. We take it for granted until there’s a problem. Whenever you’re moving about, your spine is part of the process. Yet 80 percent of adults will experience back or neck pain at some point, and spine problems can limit even the most active individual.
Until this year, UF Health Medical Group did not have a dedicated spine program. That all changed in February 2025 when Ali Zarezadeh, MD, joined the team.
A highly skilled spine surgeon, Dr. Zarezadeh, (or Dr. Z as patients fondly refer to him), has extensive expertise in treating both common and complex spine conditions.
There was a clear need for an experienced spine surgeon in Central Florida — and UF Health has answered that call. Before Dr. Zarezadeh joined the team, patients often had to leave the area for spinal surgery. Now, with expert care available locally, UF Health proudly o ers both clinical consultations and advanced spine surgery right here in Lake, Sumter, Marion and surrounding counties.
DR. ZAREZADEH TREATS
PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC AND COMPLEX SPINE DISORDERS, INCLUDING:
• Degenerative conditions
• Spinal stenosis
• Spinal deformities
• Spinal fractures
• Spinal tumors and oncology
Among the most common spine procedures being performed are spinal decompressions, spinal fusions, lumbar and cervical procedures, and microdiscectomies, also known as surgery to treat herniated lumbar discs.
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
“We provide comprehensive spine care, surgical and non-surgical treatments based on a patient’s needs,” says Dr. Zarezadeh, adding that the latest technology and techniques are used to improve patient outcomes.
“We employ top-of-the-line technology called the O-arm™ surgical imaging system to help design what needs to be done and execute it during surgery. We use the O-arm™ in the operating room
MEET THE DOCTOR
A University of Florida graduate, Ali Zarezadeh, MD, did his orthopaedic surgery residency at UF from 2015 to 2020. He then completed an orthopaedic oncology fellowship at UF from 2020 to 2021. This was followed by a spine surgery fellowship at the University of Colorado in Denver from 2021 to 2022.
to guide us to place the hardware with greater accuracy during spinal surgery. This technology has advanced over the years and we’re using the latest version, which gives us more options,” says Dr. Zarezadeh.
“It shortens time in the operating room and enables us to safely perform more complex procedures with a reduced risk of complications. The precision of hardware placement directly contributes to better outcomes for our patients,” he adds.
Arti cial intelligence is also proving bene cial. It’s the 21st century, after all.
“We use AI to plan spine fusion surgery so that alignment is accurate according to the patient’s anatomy. This model predicts which alignments work best for each patient, which increases the optimal outcome. In the spine, millimeters count, so having hardware in the exact right place is crucial,” says Dr. Zarezadeh.
“AI assistance in surgery planning has evolved and progressed over the last four years. The knowledge is much more than what we used in 2021 when we started using AI assistance,” he says.
In addition to UF Health o ering the most advanced technology, state-of-the art operating rooms and
TIPS FROM DR. ZAREZADEH
Patients play a crucial role in their wellness journey. To preserve spine health, Dr. Zarezadeh recommends:
GOOD BACK POSTURE
Keep your spine’s natural S-curve by sitting tall, relaxing your shoulders and supporting your lower back.
STAY ACTIVE
Daily strengthening and stretching exercises can promote flexibility, strength and proper alignment.
instruments, Dr. Zarezadeh notes that it’s not only the technology, but their entire team that makes the UF Health spine program so unique.
“From the nurses to the radiology techs, physical therapists and schedulers, we have an amazing team,” he says. “We can connect patients to providers across the entire UF Health system, in case a patient needs interdisciplinary care, which is a de nite bene t of coming to a UF Health facility.”
There are times when hip and knee pain overlap with spine problems, so a patient may see both Dr. Zarezadeh and an orthopaedic physician during their health journey.
ABOUT THE DOC
“I grew roots here in Florida. My wife, Elham, a pathologist, is also a UF Health physician and she works in Gainesville. We have a 7-year-old daughter and she’s a native Floridian, so our most rational choice was Florida,” says Dr. Zarezadeh.
WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
Maintaining a healthy weight supports spine health by reducing strain on the spine.
STRESS REDUCTION
Managing stress through staying active, stretching, relaxation and restful sleep can improve spinal health by reducing tension.
Some of their favorite family activities include time at the beach, hiking in the national parks and visiting the springs.
An avid Gator fan, Dr. Zarezadeh follows both football and basketball. He also has another passion. “I’m a ight enthusiast and am working on getting my private pilot license,” he says.

hether it’s a painful bunion, badly ingrown toenail, or troubling chronic condition, you want a solution that o ers pain relief.
When problems strike below the knee, Ankle and Foot Center of Central Florida provides solutions with personalized treatment.
Symptoms can include:
• Numbness
• Tingling
Everything below the knee is covered by the experts at the Ankle and Foot Center of Central Florida from sports injuries and bunions to diabetic foot ulcers, arthritis and much more.
• Burning pain
Dr. Joanne Balkaran, DPM, MS, FACFAS, FAMIFAS, CWS, and Dr. Blanca T. Diaz, DPM, DABPM, subspecialize in di erent areas so all patient needs are addressed.
PERIPHERAL NERVE SURGERY
Some patients seek relief from nerve pain due to previous injuries or surgery that resulted in scar tissue or nerve entrapment. Other patients may be in pain from tarsal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, or compression due to a high arch.
• Shooting pain
• Neuropathy
A full work-up is done and labs are ordered to rule out vitamin de ciency neuropathy. In some cases, patients nd relief with medication, nerve creams, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections or laser therapy. If the nerve is compressed, has traction on it, or is completely severed, surgery is necessary to repair it. Depending on the situation, Dr. Balkaran can use di erent surgical procedures to restore function and alleviate pain.
MIS can be performed in the o ce surgical suite under local anesthesia and o ers:
• Smaller incisions
• No hardware or pins
• Less swelling and discomfort
• Reduced downtime
• Faster recovery time
TTBT
MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY
When quality of life is a ected by the painful progressive deformities of a bunion or hammer toe, the answer may be minimally invasive surgery (MIS).
An e ective alternative to “open” surgery, MIS performs the same bone cuts, but with smaller incisions and without disrupting circulation or blood supply.
Transverse tibial bone transport (TTBT) is an exciting development for patients at risk of amputation. This includes diabetics with foot ulcerations or anyone with severe circulation problems that prevent healing.
“The bone healing time is the same, but patients have early mobility and early weight-bearing after surgery,” explains Dr. Balkaran, who founded the practice in 2015 and is boardcerti ed in MIS.
“This is a limb salvage and limb preservation procedure. TTBT can prevent amputations and allow for new circulation formation,” says Dr. Balkaran, noting that external devices are used and can show improvement within 10 to 12 weeks.
Whatever the condition, each patient is unique. Treatment is always customized to the individual. Calltodaytoschedule yourappointment.

In February, after much persuasion to participate, Diana was recognized at the Taste of Lake for Best Dessert
“I was shocked,” she says. “I was up against Lake Tech and some others who had more intricate things. I was very happy, trying not to cry.”
Throughout her journey, Diana has had people continually encourage her, including her soul sister Joa Harpster and Rick Moore, a retired caricature artist who drew Diana’s cartoon logo. Perhaps Diana’s biggest cheerleader
was her cousin from Ohio, but sadly she recently passed away.
“She always pushed me,” Diana says. “She was so proud of me for doing this. I lost my drive for a while, but I’m getting back to it.”
Now, Diana’s back in the kitchen — baking, selling at events and dreaming up new ventures, including combining her two passions, karaoke and cupcakes. Although she’s still working on exactly how those two things t together, she’s fairly sure she’s on to something great.
“Every time I give someone my card, they’re like, ‘Cupcakes and karaoke? How do you put that together?’” she says. “Joa and I have been talking about it. It could work. Maybe you sing for a cupcake.”
For now, she continues appearing at markets, events and fundraisers across Central Florida and taking cupcake orders through her website: www.sweetlittletreasures.carrd.co.

4 c. confectioners’sugar
1/2 c. finely chopped pecans (optional, or use as garnish)

BUTTERCREAM FROSTING
(standard recipe)
INGREDIENTS :
1 c. (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
3-4 c. powdered sugar (sifted)
2-3 Tbsp. heavy cream or milk
1 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS:
Beat the butter: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter on medium-high speed until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes). Add powdered sugar: Gradually add 3 cups of powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Add vanilla & cream: Add vanilla and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk. Beat on medium speed until combined and fluffy. Add more cream (a little at a time) if it’s too thick. Adjust texture: If the frosting is too thin, beat in more powdered sugar 1/4 cup at a time. If it’s too thick, add a bit more cream or milk. Add food grade colorings for a colorful finish.

1 c. all-purpose flour
1 1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/8 tsp. salt

Scrape bowl and beat for 10 seconds until smooth. Fill muffin tin 2/3 full with batter (use an ice cream scoop for ease). Bake for 22 minutes or until golden and a toothpick comes out clean. The Edna E ect
A family tree blossoms under the oaks at Ednas’ on the Green in The Villages.
hat started as a simple food truck with a few tables and part-time music next to a golf course has grown into one of the most beloved gathering spots and hospitality concepts in The Villages.
After six years at the Marsh Bend Trail location, Ednas’ on the Green has expanded, but still keeps things unpretentious. You order at the counter, grab a drink, then nd your seat close to nature with your friends and neighbors. The experience has evolved with the community.
“We love to call it ‘Cheers under the oaks,’” says GM Lisa Reilly. “We’ve grown organically, just like the area and it’s always been about elevating the guest experience while still making it feel like home.”
STORY: GINA HORAN ≈ PHOTOS: NICOLE HAMEL
These days, there’s live entertainment seven nights a week, a carefully curated beverage lineup and a fresh menu that changes with the seasons.
At any given moment, the kitchen might be turning out blackened red sh, golden tots and fried green tomato BLTs while a talented local band plays the blues. Meanwhile, Lisa, who holds a Level 3 WSET certi cation, could be leading a wine class.
Owner Jordan Edna and her husband, British-born chef Jon “JT” Tubby, launched the whole enterprise as a mobile kitchen and a leap of faith. Now it’s a full-service brick-and-mortar spot that somehow still feels like a locals-only secret.
Local musician Dale Stumbo, who has played every Thursday since
opening week, puts it this way: “They listen to the community and support local talent. There’s nothing else like Ednas’.”
Dale grew up in Wildwood, left for Nashville to play music and is now enjoying a ful lling second career in his hometown.
Ednas’ was one of the rst places I discovered when I moved here almost four years ago, and I was more than excited to go back and see what they’ve been up to.
Luckily, chef Bryse Bernstein has been there since day one and is proud of the restaurant’s subtle but steady growth.
“My aim is to provide our guests with a unique culinary experience unlike anything else in The Villages,” Bryse says. “We take classic dishes and
add our own creative twist, resulting in food that’s both outside the box and delicious.”
One of my favorite dishes was the juicy beef belly pastrami Reuben made with house-brined beef navel pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Ednas’ Sauce. I also loved the cold shrimp roll, made with local Gulf shrimp, house-made dill aioli and cilantro microgreens.
“I make an e ort to update the menu each season to keep things fresh and exciting for our guests,” Bryse adds.
As always, chief photographer Nicole was there to help me sample the goods. She enjoyed the atbreads, especially the Margherita, made with house tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, balsamic glaze and opal basil microgreens. We both devoured the spicy Hawaiian topped with roasted pineapple, jalapeno and bacon.
We also shared the Florida strawberry salad made with spring mix, fresh strawberries, watermelon radish, cheddar and jack cheeses and candied pecans. The decadent charcuterie board was loaded with smoked gouda, Manchego, Sopressata,
chorizo, house-pickled collard stems and hand-made Boursin.
There’s a rotating draft list, craft cans, featured wines by the glass and curated pours like BellaFina Prosecco and Château Haut Branda Sauvignon Blanc. Red wine fans can grab a bottle of Radley & Finch Cabernet or a smooth Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, among others.
They’ve added a wine school, themed tastings and chef-led pairings, but the heart of Ednas’ hasn’t changed. What may have started as a truck under the oaks now feels like the soul of the neighborhood, with equal parts backyard party, haven for local talent and something the original Edna’s patrons would be proud of.
Let’s do lunch or dinner! Tell us about a great restaurant by emailing gina@akersmediagroup.com.
MEET THE EDNAS’
Edna “Lil” McGlocklin, left, and Edna “Skippy” McDonough, right, met in their 30s on Beaver Island, Michigan, and stayed close for life. Lil ran the Circle M Supper Club with her husband while raising five kids. Skippy helped run McDonough’s Market and raised seven children. They were practical, loyal and always showed up for each other.
Their friendship became family when Lil’s daughter Laurie married Skippy’s son Tom. That union eventually led to Jordan “Edna,” who, along with her husband J.T., named their Villages location as a tribute.
Today, Edna’s on the Green honors their grit and hospitality with fresh seasonal food, a carefully curated beverage program and live music seven days a week.
Both Ednas were able to visit the site before they passed and are now most likely raising a glass together under the oaks, right alongside their extended community.

Where Family Meets Flavor

hen Ildefonso Hernandez took over La Palma Mexican Grill in Leesburg three years ago, he brought a strong work ethic, some family recipes and a clear sense of what he liked when dining out.
“I didn’t know anything about running a restaurant, but I knew what I wanted and I was lucky enough to have very talented people already there to guide me through,” he says. “I couldn’t have done it without them.”
From the start, Ildefonso has been supported by his wife Annette, sister Sylvette and mom Esperanza and especially his dad, Rodrigo, who’s support made everything possible.
Together, they’ve created a space that feels like home: fresh, authentic food served in a laid-back, family-friendly atmosphere where regulars become friends.
The Hernandez family is growing right along with the business. Three-year-old Rodrigo now has two little sisters, Camilla and baby Paloma, who can often be found around the restaurant, adding to its welcoming feel.
Next to their beautiful, lush forest full of tropical fruits and famous animals, La Palma is a place where authentic Mexican avors meet family, where quality matters and every dish is made with care.
The menu has something for everyone. Guests come for mojarra fried sh, siete mares soup and classics like enchiladas, fajitas and arroz con pollo. The signature Molcajete is perfect for sharing, and the 15-inch burrito Tejano is not just big but bursting with avor.
On Mondays enjoy $5 margaritas, for Taco Tuesdays each taco is $1.99 + tax and margaritas are 3 for 1 year-round. A kid’s menu and lunch specials round out the o erings.
The bar stays busy, not just for Ildefonso’s famous avored margaritas served in glass Patron bottles, but for the welcoming atmosphere and wide selection of beer, wine and spirits. They’re also planning to remodel the bar area this year, giving guests even more reason to pull up a seat.
La Palma has become a favorite spot for everything from casual family dinners to lively celebrations with a party room that seat 50 people and is available to reserve for private events. Cinco de Mayo always draws a full house, with standing-room only on the patio, live music from Mariachi de Tampa and plenty of margaritas to keep the party going.
Their thriving and popular catering operation serves companies like Walmart, ROMAC, T&D Construction, Premier Pools and many more, showing that La Palma can handle gatherings of any size and is truly a place for the community, seven days a week.
SO MEADY
STORY: GINA HORAN ≈ PHOTO: NICOLE HAMEL
hroughout my days of wine and roses, I was convinced that I’d tasted every type of alcoholic beverage on the planet. But during a recent visit to downtown Eustis, I realized the ancient elixir of mead had somehow eluded me.
This honey-based beverage is no longer a relic from medieval banquets in dusty storybooks. Mead is having a full-blown renaissance thanks to dedicated enthusiasts like TJ Lawrence, president of Pinesmoke Bee Company.
“It all started as a backyard beekeeping passion,” TJ says. “After years of ‘Ren’ faires and farmers markets, we’ve blossomed into a pretty distinctive and inviting gathering place here in the Ironblock Building.”
He’s being modest. Armed with nearly two decades of research and enough nerdy data to make any fermentation geek swoon, TJ has been ready to unleash this clean, gluten-free beverage on the public for years.
Alongside fellow beekeeper Jason Gajentan and head of events and marketing Audra Montgomery, TJ has helped build a devoted following through hive tours, hands-on workshops and handmade goods.
“We’re ready to start making our own mead now,” TJ says with palpable enthusiasm.
Part classroom, part taproom and full-on community hub, Pinesmoke is decked out with close-up images of bees, glass-etched honeycomb and a live hive.
Their honey ranges from seasonal to spicy, and the rotating menu
features more than 20 meads, ciders and beers, including nonalcoholic options and ights.
Pinesmoke also supplies honey to Pisces Rising, The Deli Llama, Eden Abbey and other local restaurants.
“Visitors can sip small-batch meads, shop honey-based goods or take part in a range of events from candle-making to fermentation classes,” Audra says.
Future plans include a citysupported apiary, “Day in the Bee Yard” experiences and small plates to pair with all that golden goodness and a very smooth and sneaky buzz.

DIRECTIONS :

RBOI’S GROUNDBREAKING Melanoma Treatment
ore than 20 years ago, RBOI founder Dr. Norman Anderson successfully treated a man whose metastatic melanoma had produced 23 brain lesions. Anderson performed whole brain radiation, administering low doses twice a day. His discovery led to a study with 19 patients, whose melanomas together had metastasized to the brain, other areas of the head, neck, lung, abdomen, liver, pelvis, and extremities, along with lymph nodes. They had all exhausted their other treatment options.
Now, over 100 melanoma patients have completed treatment. Eighty percent of people whose melanoma was metastatic at the outset are alive three years after radiation treatment, and the occurrence of further disease elsewhere has been “markedly diminished if not eliminated, increasing the potential for a cure.” Other patients have remained disease-free for up to a decade and longer.
Dr. Anderson’s radiation protocol, often used without added surgery or pharmaceuticals, eliminated melanomas that had been resistant to other procedures, or that had returned following surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.
“Dr. Anderson points out that there is a big difference between once-daily radiation and smaller doses of twice-daily radiation. More frequent radiation has eliminated tumors even in untreated areas, a historically rare phenomenon called the abscopal effect.”
Twice-daily radiation can eliminate all signs of the disease, reduce side effects significantly, and extend patient survival, for a small fraction of the cost of other treatments. According to the medical literature, treating advanced melanoma in which surgery is not an option can cost around $1.6 million to add a single year of progression-free survival. “Treatment with twice daily radiation as an alternative appears to offer optimum results,” Dr. Anderson says, “while markedly decreasing overall cost to a few percent.”
Annual melanoma deaths in the US total 8,430 and rising. Twice-daily radiation may help reverse that trend. Patented in the US and Australia, with 34 patents pending in Europe, Dr. Anderson’s treatment protocol is poised to serve “an essential therapeutic role for melanoma.”

MOLES: Benign, or Melanoma?
When examining moles, use the ABCDE rule:
A=Asymmetry: One half of a mole or birthmark does not match the other.
B=Border: Edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred.
C=Color: Color is not the same all over and may include different shades of brown or black, or may have patches of pink, red, white, or blue.
D=Diameter: Spot is larger than 6 millimeters across (about pencil eraser width).
E=Evolving: The mole’s size, shape, or color changes.
Also check to see if a spot looks different from all the other spots on your skin. If you see something that doesn’t look right or that causes you concern, tell your doctor.

Combined, Shae and Ray bring nearly 30 years of experience to the job, backed by a team of highly trained electricians, including two statecerti ed electrical contractors. Every Blueprint crew leader has at least a decade of hands-on experience— something that’s rare in the industry.
“We’re not just another electrical company,” Shae explains. “We’re focused on customer satisfaction and building long-term relationships. That means showing up when we say we will, doing the job right, and making sure every client feels taken care of.”

Sew Priceless
A childhood gift that’s really stuck with me.
STORY: R0XANNE BROWN
y sewing box is a little faded now and the Velcro strap that once held it shut no longer sticks. But with a little creativity, it still holds everything I need. That and a lot of heart.
I was 8 or 9 when my Nina taught me how to sew, not on a machine, by hand. My younger sister
outings and activities we’d prefer on what days. We’d arrive by Greyhound (a 1½ hour bus trip from Nogales to Tucson) and they made us feel special every second.
One year, sewing lessons made the cut. I can still picture us at her kitchen table, pulling thread through a needle—or trying to—while she taught us how to knot the ends. We practiced various stitches on felt squares, sewed them together, added big colorful buttons and created the cutest coin purses.
A few weeks later, two sewing boxes arrived by mail. Mine was pink with roses and both were lled with everything you’d ever need: a handmade cloth pin cushion patterned with a little violinist, all kinds of thread, sewing needles and stick pins, a silver thimble, a thread cutter, scissors and a plastic bag lled with buttons in every size, shape and color imaginable. Who cares if we barely knew three stitches?!
I’ve had that sewing box for ... well, let’s just say the number of years is not important, but I never really became great at sewing. Still, I can replace a button, repair a seam or patch a small tear like a near pro! My kids even know to bring me things that need mending before tossing them and USUALLY, they are wearable afterwards, which makes me feel proud.
To this day, I don’t know if my sister kept her sewing box, but mine brings me comfort when I see it next to my bed, where I keep it for some reason.
It’s been with me through many chapters—leaving home, two marriages that eventually unraveled, three beautiful kids I love so much, friendships, moves, victories, losses, lessons, ups, downs and in-betweens. And although the sewing box isn’t lled with the exact same needles and thread, the love and care found inside has always remained.
It’s a little worn and the stains are deeply embedded, but it’s held together all this time, and honestly, so have I.
Hey, readers! Is there a particular subject that you would like me to write Tell me, via email at roxanne@akersmediagroup.com.
