Age: 38 | Career: Pilot, Entrepreneur, Business Owner of Fly Umatilla

A challenge that shaped me: Enlisting in the United States Navy as an Aviation Rescue Swimmer at the age of 25. It's a special operation field in which the initial training took two years and then another two years in the fleet before I was fully qualified. The attrition rate is over 70 percent. I can honestly say it was the first truly difficult thing I had ever done. It gave me the confidence and drive to keep pushing to try harder and bigger tasks. Learning how to jump out of a helicopter in pitch black water with waves crashing

over me was more physically and mentally taxing than I ever could have imagined. What I’d like people to say about me: He had an uncommon last name paired with an uncommon work ethic. He said what he meant and meant what he said, while always keeping honesty a priority. Fun fact: I used to own and operate an actual alligator farm with over 300 Florida swamp puppies.

Defining moment: The journey to adopting our son, Ryder, was one of the hardest and most humbling experiences of my life. It tested every ounce of patience, faith and strength I thought I had, but it also revealed a quiet, relentless determination I didn’t know I had and a persistence that carried me through. That experience deepened my capacity for love, taught me to trust the process, and showed me that the most meaningful things often come from the most challenging paths.

Beyond work: My family is my greatest motivation. My dad believed in me first and supported me even when it meant allowing me to fail. I tell my mentee that the last thing I want is for them to spend their life in a job that isn’t fulfilling. It’s so important to find something you truly enjoy doing. Biggest challenge: Launching A.I.M. during uncertain times tested my resilience and adaptability. Fun fact: I had the unique opportunity to choreograph two halftime routines for the University of Florida men’s basketball games, once as a student and again as an alumni. My inspirations: Beyond titles and achievements, what drives me each day is my family. Knowing that I can make a difference in their lives and be someone they can look up to, is what truly gets me going every morning. How I’ve grown: One defining moment that shaped who I am today was being given the responsibility to manage and design a large community project, a challenge far outside my comfort zone. A senior co-worker gave me advice that has stayed with me: “If a task makes you uncomfortable, it often means you’re growing personally and professionally.” While it’s okay to say no, I learned that by leaning on the support of those around me, I could rise to the challenge and achieve more than I imagined. What drives me: The smiles on our customers’ faces and their continued support for Ground Up Coffee bring me joy. We have built our own little community of family and friends with a cup of coffee. My team of baristas also plays a big part in that joy each day. We are all like family. We joke around, sing to the pop music playing, support and we truly care about one another. Having a strong team makes the day fun and not feel like work. They are all such hard workers and they care about Ground Up’s customers just as much as my husband and I do. What shaped me: Seeing my mom work two jobs and work so hard to provide for my brother and I and witnessing her drive, ambition, work ethic and willingness to adjust. She was the strongest person I know, and she jump started my love for coffee.

Fun fact: I may own a coffee trailer, but I actually don’t drink coffee!

What drives me: My family and the community that raised me. I want my daughters to see that a meaningful life is one built on service, gratitude and hard work. Fun fact: I learned to fly a plane before I learned to drive a car thanks to years in the Civil Air Patrol at the Leesburg Airport.

My legacy: I hope I can inspire the future generations to be fearless when starting something of their own. Believing in your true ability and purpose is the first step in creating something great! All that matters is that you stay disciplined and you’ll be able to achieve anything you want in life. Fun fact: I played ice hockey from ages 2 to 18. I started racing motocross at 14 and still race today, and I love riding dirt bikes with my son. I also really enjoy taking my daughter to Sky Zone every week!

An experience that shaped me: Joining the Air Force was one of the most defining decisions of my life. I knew I wanted to become a CRNA, but I didn’t want to take on significant financial debt. The Air Force not only gave me the opportunity to develop strong leadership and professional skills, but it also provided the financial stability to pursue my dream of becoming a CRNA. My legacy: My goal is to inspire people to chase their dreams and never hold themselves back. Your background doesn’t define your future; with determination and perseverance, you can accomplish anything. I especially want to encourage the next generation of CRNAs to know that it’s never too late to go back to school. Even with a family like I had, you can absolutely make it work.

My legacy: My hope is that throughout my career I can continue to give back to the community and schools in our area. Through that, I am able to impact the lives of our youth and possibly give them the opportunity that they may not have had otherwise. Second Act Actor Jerry Walsh trades Hollywood sets for The Villages spotlight. STORY AND PHOTO: CINDY PETERSON

ctor Jerry Walsh is finding renewed joy on a much smaller stage in The Villages after decades of appearing in major film and television productions alongside Hollywood icons. Jerry built an impressive résumé as a seasoned character actor in War of the Worlds, Fallen,

Premium Rush, Law & Order, The Wire and Gotham but his story began far from the lights of Hollywood. “I got involved in acting in my mid30s,” he says. “I had played semi-pro football, and a friend of mine, who’d become a model, got me into an acting class in Philadelphia.” That decision set Jerry on a decades-long journey through the entertainment industry. His first job was as an extra in Rocky V, where a few friendly poker games with members of the Screen Actors Guild unexpectedly launched his professional career. “By the end of the shoot, I was in the union,” he says. “That’s how it all started.” Jerry earned speaking roles in major productions over the years, working with stars like Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox. A highlight of his career came on the set of War of the Worlds. “Spielberg looks at me and says, ‘Oh, I know Jerry, I want Jerry on the boat. And all I could think was, ‘Steven Spielberg knows me!’” Jerry spent much of his career in front of the camera, but his

most rewarding experiences came from teaching acting. “There’s nothing better than seeing that light go on when someone finally gets it,” he says. “That’s the moment every teacher lives for.”

Jerry returned to his theatrical roots after retiring and moving to The Villages, performing with The Villages Theatre Company and Acting Out. Most recently he rehearsed for The Last Roundup of the Guacamole Queens, a Texas comedy by Jones Hope Wooten. “Film acting and stage acting are two completely different animals,” he says. “On stage, there are no do-overs. Once it starts, it goes.” And Jerry continues to go. “I loved it then and I still love it now,” he says. “It’s a lot of fun and that’s what keeps me coming back.”

The Cool Sommer Mornings series wrapped up its 40th anniversary season with a lively tiki party-themed race at Clermont Waterfront Park. The longrunning series founded by race director Fred Sommer has become a Central Florida tradition that blends endurance, fun and community across four summer events. The final race featured a 5K run/walk, sprint and international distance triathlons, a sprint duathlon, an aqua bike and a relay. Athletes from across the region competed along Lake Minneola’s shoreline, surrounded by music, cheering spectators and tropical décor. The tiki theme brought a festive finish to a milestone season that honored four decades of Fred Sommer’s dedication to creating events that inspire fitness, friendship and the true spirit of competition.

Zero Hour Life Center hosted an inspiring event at the Salvation Army in Leesburg last September that brought the community together for a day of connection, education and empowerment. Headlining speaker Brandi Mac delivered a powerful message on recovery and resilience that resonated deeply with attendees. Staff member Anthony Davis shared heartfelt poetry that captured both the struggles and triumphs of his journey that left the audience moved and motivated. With more than 20 vendors on-site, attendees gained access to vital information and support services, reinforcing the message that recovery is possible and help is within reach. The beautiful gathering was a testament to the community’s strength and its shared commitment to breaking the stigma around addiction and mental health. Zero Hour Life Center plans to make this gathering an annual event each September.

Lucky U Cycles in Wildwood drew a remarkable crowd as supporters from at least five counties came together to raise money for three linemen injured in a tragic worksite accident. More than 300 attendees helped raise $30,000 through raffles, auctions, food and live music. The event honored Justin Bryan, who was killed in the Aug. 12 accident, and supported Jeff Busch and Matt Waldrop, who were critically injured. Musicians Josh Williams and Braxton Bennett donated their time, Squealin’ Butts provided barbecue, Tap Truck poured brews and Lucky U’s staff volunteered. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the jaw to the temporal bones of the skull. This hinged joint allows the jaw to move, making it critical for talking, chewing, swallowing and yawning. Pain in the joint can be caused by grinding or clenching teeth, anxiety, poor posture, or physiological stressors. TMJ pain can radiate into the jaw, face, and ear, often associated with headaches, muscle spasms, and locking of the jaw.

Understanding Uveitis f you’ve noticed eye redness, pain, or sudden changes in vision, don’t ignore the signs. These symptoms could point to uveitis, an inflammatory eye condition that can lead to serious complications if untreated. What is uveitis? Uveitis is inflammation of the uvea, the eye’s vascular middle layer, which includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. How is inflammation treated? Depending on the clinical findings your doctor will discuss an individualized treatment plan with you. Most cases start with local treatment including topical corticosteroid eye drops to decrease intraocular inflammation. For more severe inflammation, injections around or inside the eye may be used. Systemic therapy including corticosteroids or immunomodulatory therapy is considered with more severe inflammation or poor response to local treatment.

What if an infection is the cause? If uveitis is linked to an infection, targeted medications such as antibiotics, antivirals, or antifungals are prescribed to address the underlying problem.

How do you manage chronic or recurring uveitis? For patients who experience repeated episodes or require long-term control, immunomodulatory therapy may be introduced. These medications help regulate the immune system and help to reduce reliance on corticosteroids.

Are there advanced treatment options? Yes. Long-acting steroid implants can be injected inside the eye to reduce inflammation over months or years, therefore reducing the need for frequent treatments. Systemic immunomodulatory therapy including targeted immune suppression is also available which can be initiated/ provided with rheumatologists.

When should I see a retina specialist for uveitis? If you notice persistent eye redness, pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision,

or floaters, schedule an appointment immediately. Early evaluation by a retina specialist is essential to prevent complications such as glaucoma, cataracts, or damage to the retina.

Trusted Care. Two skilled optometrists join Mid Florida Eye Center to strengthen its tradition of outstanding patient care.

DR . CA R OL I N E M I S C H Dr. Caroline Vollberg Misch joined Mid Florida Eye Center in September and has already found her fit. “I really, really like it,” she says. “This was the setting that I’ve been looking for.” Dr. Misch earned her Bachelor of Science in biology from Southern Adventist University and her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2020. Her interest in ocular disease led her to complete a residency in medical optometry at SouthEast Eye Specialists in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 2021. She has now been practicing for about five years. At Mid Florida Eye Center, Dr. Misch provides comprehensive exams for patients ages 5 and up, with a strong focus on medical eye care. She sees a wide range of cases, including dry eye, diabetic eye concerns and emergencies. Most of her patients are older adults, but she enjoys caring for all ages.

Her passion for eye care began on a mission trip to Fiji. Working in a small eye clinic there changed her path. “It was very powerful to see the locals trying on glasses and having that instant gratification,” she says. “They could see for the first time. I wanted to pursue that once I got back.” Dr. Misch aims to create “a very comfortable and easygoing environment that feels inviting.” “We like to have fun in our exams. My goal is to make the patient experience as easy and enjoyable as possible,” she says.

Dr. Hutton earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Rosenberg School of Optometry after completing a biotechnology degree at the University of Central Florida. His clinical training included rotations through the Jacksonville VA, San Antonio Contact Lens Institute and other specialty clinics, where he developed interests in primary care, ocular disease and dry eye management. His path into eye care began when his younger brother was treated for an eye turn. “Everywhere he went, I went,” he says. “I remember thinking it would be pretty cool to go into this. I just knew.” Today, he sees patients with glaucoma, diabetic eye issues, cataracts, dry eye and more, along with routine exams and post-operative care. Raised in Winter Haven, Dr. Hutton enjoys CrossFit, running with his dog Knightro, traveling and time with family and friends.

Lakeview Basketball Academy gives post-grad players a second shot. STORY AND PHOTOS: CINDY PETERSON

BRIDGING THE GAP akeview Basketball Academy (LBA) is far from a typical basketball camp. It’s a launching pad for young men from around the world chasing their dreams of playing college basketball. LBA found a home at the Florida Elks Youth Camp & Smith Conference Center in Umatilla,

where players train for a year under the leadership of academy owner/ Coach Douglas Leichner, who brings more than three decades of coaching experience at the high school, college and professional levels. “This is a serious, full-time environment,” Leichner says. “Our players train daily, study film, lift weights and shoot at night. They’re putting in 12-hour days. It’s not casual. It’s for those who want to maximize their potential.” The academy, which is in its second year in Lake County, serves

as a post-graduate program for high school athletes who need a gap year, or time to develop physically, mentally and emotionally before committing to a college program. From September through March, the academy functions like a fullseason college team. Leichner says partnering with the Elks was a perfect fit. “Pat Burke, a former NBA player who now works at Beacon College, told me about the setup here with the Elks,” he says. “He said it could be a great situation and he was right.

The Elks were very receptive and the partnership has been a win-win for both sides.” The Elks campus provides dormstyle housing, meal services and practice facilities. It’s everything players need to live and train full-time. “They eat here, sleep here and train here,” Leichner says. “It’s our own little basketball bubble.” The idea for LBA was conceived during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when student-athletes around the country found themselves without competition or exposure.

“In a lot of states, seasons were shut down completely,” says Leichner, who had just returned from coaching professionally overseas when he recognized the gap. “Florida was one of the few that stayed open, so I was able to attract players from the Midwest and elsewhere who needed a place to train, get film and keep improving. That’s really how this all started.” He focused on recruiting talented players who didn’t have opportunities to play in college simply because they hadn’t been seen. What began as a

short-term fix quickly evolved into a long-term mission. “Now, with so many older players staying in college longer because of eligibility extensions, there’s a real need for younger players to find a bridge year,” he says. “That’s where we come in.” Players who join Lakeview come from all walks of life and all corners of the globe. This year’s roster includes athletes from Florida, New Jersey, Connecticut, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand. Brenden Shaw and Caleb Godwin say that the academy has been life changing. “It’s an amazing program,” Brenden says. “My trainers knew Coach Leichner and told me he was the real deal. We’ve got great facilities, a great coaching staff and they put us in the right spots to get recruited.” Brenden, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Orlando, has already drawn interest from several college programs, including Virginia Military Institute, Florida A&M and Fort Valley State. Caleb, a 6-foot-1 combo guard from Tallahassee, said he came to

Douglas Leichner’s career reads like a world map of basketball. A native of Connecticut, he played and later coached at Central Connecticut State University before moving into Division I roles at Maine and Iona. His coaching journey also took him abroad, leading teams in China, Ireland and Great Britain, where he served as head coach for the national under-20 team. Over his 33 years in the game, he has developed an extensive network of college recruiters and coaches across every level of play, from Division I through junior college. That network is what allows LBA players to get real exposure to the next level.

LBA knowing he needed an extra year to develop. “There are a lot of older guys in college now and I just knew I needed this year to get better and get stronger,” he says. “The coaches do an amazing job of putting us in the right position to be seen.” Leichner says that the most powerful stories are ones where basketball truly changes a life,

like a player from Oklahoma who was working third shift at Amazon, unsure of what was next. “I recruited him and said, ‘Come here, and we’ll get you an education and a real shot at college ball,’” Leichner says. “He came for a year, went on to junior college and then transferred up. Now he’s playing Division I basketball and through NIL (Name, Image and Likeness), he’s earning six figures. That’s life-changing.” Stories like that fuel the program’s mission. “It’s not Division I or bust,” Leichner says. “It’s about finding the right fit, be it NAIA (National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics), Division 1, Division 2 or Division 3, whatever gives them the best education and experience. Our goal is to get them to the next level.” Last year, every player who completed the LBA program advanced to play in college, an impressive accomplishment. While the focus is on player development, Leichner says the personal bonds that form are just as important. “The bonding is real,” he says. “They come in as individuals and leave as family. The experiences they share here stay with them for life.” That same philosophy extends to his coaching staff, who are also using this experience to

advance their careers. Associate Head Coach Rodney Jackson and Assistant Coach Jack Curran are both former players who’ve been with Leichner since the beginning. “They’ve been invaluable,” Leichner says. “Their loyalty, work ethic and commitment have been huge for our success. A lot of times assistant coaches don’t get enough credit, but we couldn’t do this without them.” Leichner hopes to grow Lakeview Basketball Academy into a larger local presence by opening commuter spots for players who live in Lake County and eventually adding a women’s program. “I’d love to see more local kids take advantage of this,” he says. “They don’t have to live here full-time. They can commute and still get the same exposure and training. There’s so much talent in Lake County.” Off the court, players take trips to local colleges and community attractions, giving them a taste of campus life and the region they represent. “We want them to have a full experience,” Leichner says. “They’re not just learning basketball. heresa McRae had no idea she was walking into a turning point in life when she first walked into her new community’s clubhouse. Theresa and her husband Duncan McRae had just moved from Sanford to The Plantation at Leesburg to be closer to Duncan’s brother Tim. Settling in should have felt easy, but the weight she’d gained kept creeping higher. In April 2025, Theresa was diagnosed with fatty liver and the doctor encouraged her to take action. “My main motivation was my diagnosis and my doctor nagging, really encouraging me to lose weight by my next appointment to bring my elevated liver enzyme numbers down,” she says. Then Theresa came across a picture of herself at her brotherin-law’s wedding taken about six months earlier and it all clicked. “When I saw that picture and saw how big I had gotten, I realized I really did need to do something,” Theresa says.

Soon after she heard about TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) and showed up for a meeting. There, she met the group’s co-leader, Bev Krebs. “She was the first one to greet me, and she just made me feel so welcome,” Theresa says. “She’s such a sweetheart. All the women were very welcoming.” Theresa joined TOPS right away and began working out via the Walk Away the Pounds fitness program. She says many of the 46 active TOPS members follow a diet and exercise plan that works for them. They credit the weekly encouragement they receive from their TOPS peers as a tool to success, to help them to stay accountable and motivated to lose weight, eat better and move more. What she didn’t expect was how much she would love it, and even more so, how much she needed accountability. “I knew I needed help because I have yo-yo’d the same 40-50 pounds since the late 1970s,” Theresa says. “I’d lose and immediately put weight back on in no time.” “Dieting never has been tough for me,” she adds. “It’s been the struggle to keep it off that was difficult, so meeting women in TOPS who have graduated to KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) has been so inspiring. Theresa added that one particularly impressive KOPS member Wilma Heckler, a 93-year-old chair yoga and

balance exercise leader who lost 40 pounds and kept it off for nine years. “I figured out that attending meetings, having that accountability, the weekly weigh-ins and the support are what’s going to work for me and actually keep the weight off,” she says. By the end of August, Theresa reached her goal of losing 40 pounds. She “graduated” into KOPS, joining several other long-timers who’ve kept their weight off for years. Her success even pushed Duncan to join “Waist Management,” the men’s version of TOPS and he lost 16 pounds.

grandmother make potato faces and fun food designs. “My grandmother was really big on that,” she says. “She influenced me as a little girl.” These days, Theresa makes fruit and veggie trays using cookie cutters to cut shapes from cheese, watermelon and even cucumbers. She laughs when she talks about the little banana shaped like a dolphin that holds a sign saying, ‘You rock.’ “I think if you make fruit and veggies fun for kids, they’ll try them and adults love the fun in that too,” she says. Baking remains Theresa’s true passion. “During COVID, you couldn’t get out, so I would make a lot of cookies and leave them on neighbors’ doorsteps or take them to the clubhouse for people,” she says. Some recipes go back decades. “I first made my chocolate trifle like 30 or 40 years ago,” she says. “It’s amazing. But back then, the brownie mix was 12 ounces and now it only comes in 8 ounces. Everything is smaller now. I was really surprised to learn that and had to re-type the recipe to update it.” Her TOPS friends, including Bev Krebs and Merry Wallace, have been just as big a part of the cooking fun. They share recipes, swap low-calorie

Joining TOPS didn’t mean giving up the foods Theresa loves, but she splurges less often, plus modifies some of the ingredients to make them healthier. She also doesn’t follow one particular plan. “I love some of the keto recipes, the ones with the bacon and cheese or the Mediterranean dishes with beans,” Theresa says. “I found that switching things up keeps me from being bored.” She and Duncan also added intermittent fasting to their routine, which consists of no latenight snacking and eating mainly within an eight-hour window. They also gravitated toward fresh fruit, especially during Florida’s produce-rich winter.

Merry, who loves exchanging recipes with Theresa, has been cooking since she was 20. “I had a grandmother that was an excellent cook,” she says. “I learned a lot from her and I watch cooking shows.” Like Theresa, she prefers lighter swaps. “Yes, personally I like to do light substitutions like light mayonnaise, light sour cream,” she says. “But I don’t like fat-free because it takes the flavor totally away. But if you portion control and use the lite, you’re OK.”

Merry contributed her marinated chicken kabobs recipe, an old favorite. “Years ago, I used to live in central New York. We were near Cornell University and they had a marinade called the Cornell recipe,” Merry says. “My husband didn’t like vinegar though, so I modified it and I use beer instead.”

Bev has been a member for 16 years, lost 65 pounds and has kept it off for the last two. She used to make wedding cakes, often baking for friends and family. Now 87, she cooks much simpler and lighter. “Oh yes, I modify,” she says. “I try to make pies without crust and use lighter ingredients,” Bev says. Her best advice? “Well, you can eat anything you want,” she says. “It’s all in moderation and portion control. If you want a piece of cake, you can have a piece of cake, just make it a small piece or have one or two bites.” Theresa, Merry and Bev bring a mix of old favorites, healthier twists and plenty of laughter to every TOPS meeting. The magic of the group goes far beyond the food for Theresa. “Meeting women in TOPS who have graduated to KOPS has been so inspiring,” she adds. “The support and friendships I found there were just what I needed, and my doctor was elated with my blood work and weight loss. She says I can stop cholesterol meds and be totally medication free, plus I don’t have to go back to see her until November!”

Brown meat with onion in a large pot. Add taco seasoning and all other ingredients. Cook 25 minutes and let rest for 10 minutes so flavors meld. Serve as soup or strain and spoon over rice or lettuce. Add toppings like shredded cheese, sour cream, diced tomatoes, peppers, avocado, corn chips and more.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Cut peppers in half and remove seeds. Mix filling ingredients and spoon into pepper halves. Bake 10–12 minutes until light golden brown on top. Serve warm or cold.

ou don’t often see chefs greet guests at the front door, but saying hi to regulars is Sean Adamo’s favorite way to step out of the kitchen. “We’re blessed to have so many lovely guests that come in; most of the staff knows everyone by name,” says the popular chef at Francesco’s Ristorante & Stone Fire Pizza in Summerfield. “It’s like going to grandma’s house.” The regulars include Bruce, who allegedly came with the building, Lou and Louise, Tom and Gerry, JP and Kathy and the lovely Ms. Sally. All are more than valued customers, they are also consultants. Sean has asked many of them to help create specials. “Sean is so accommodating,” says Kristin, who comes from East Lake Weir with John Roman almost daily to socialize and enjoy the food. “Even though I’m Italian, I don’t like

“We come so often we probably pay the electric bill,” he says. He’s far from Francesco’s only fan. Francesco’s cuisine competes with other acclaimed Italian restaurants because Sean listens to his guests and takes pride in his menu. Everything is made from scratch with care. For example, the dough is mixed by hand and the bread is baked daily by baker Eduardo. Proteins are hand-cut, dishes are made to order and the sauces are family recipes.

The restaurant was founded by Kathy Funk and Paul Dalton, who have decades of Italian cooking experience. Chef Sean joined them more than 10 years ago, bringing 25 years of experience. He’s now a managing partner as well as head chef. The recently revamped kitchen adds space and tools to work more efficiently. A Marana Forni oven from Italy is the showpiece. The state-of-the-art oven built with dense refractory materials holds heat evenly so every pie cooks perfectly no matter how busy the night gets. “We only serve 10-inch thin crust pizzas that bake in about four minutes as the oven spins,” Sean says. “Each pie is meant for one person, making it easy to order several and share since the smaller size keeps flavors focused.” Nicole and I were greeted by the chef’s son Anthony, whose warm smile made it clear that the hospitality runs in the family. I love Italian food, but tasting the same five dishes gets blurry. Thankfully, Sean gave us an array of carefully thought-out specials to try. We started with the house made balsamic dip, which is tangy and emulsified to perfection, tangy and thankfully sold to the public. The gnocchi al pesto included oven roasted chicken, prawns and

veggies in a sauce made in house with ground toasted almonds, rather than the traditional pine nuts, for a delicate sweetness. The pecan crusted salmon was freshly hand cut and served with fresh asparagus, squash, zucchini and wild rice. The lasagna pizza was made with ricotta, mini meatballs, sliced Italian sausage, mozzarella, house marinara sauce, oregano and fresh grated parmesan. All three dishes were delicious. The house made tiramisu was cold, fresh and creamy. Other desserts, like the popular carrot cake, are procured locally from Donna’s Dreamcakes and Chef Rice’s Cheesecakes. The house favorite cocktail, “Taverna Red,” drinks like an amaretto sour with a red

wine float. Sean loves it so much he served it at his wedding last October. No matter what they serve, connections matter to the Francesco’s staff. “People may come in for the first time because they heard about our $8 specials, BOGO pizza, comedy night or all-day happy hour, but I hope they come back because we made them feel like family,” Sean says. went to the Hooters grand opening last July with a mission to record the crowd at the exact moment the doors opened. The video went viral two hours later. By the end of the day, it had spread across the country with more than half a million views. What began in 1983 as a cheeky Florida hangout has become a global icon with more than 425 locations and a reputation built on wings, beer and friendly service. So, bringing one to The Villages was a genius move. The same generation that helped make Hooters famous now lives here and they seem to crave the nostalgia. It’s packed every day. Regular patrons roll up by car or golf cart, greet friendly faces behind the bar and order their favorite menu item. For many, their visit is part memory lane, part neighborhood hangout. Bartender Tabitha Loose has worked behind the bar since day one and loves the camaraderie as well as the clientele.

“It’s really cool to see how many people travel here,” she says. “They’ll come in before heading home or after a round of golf and tell us they can’t wait to come back.” General Manager Summer Abarbanel says the response has been nothing short of remarkable. “Everyone has welcomed us with open arms,” she says. “It’s exactly what I thought it would be with amazing people in an amazing area.” During college football season, Saturdays are their biggest days, with fans filling every seat and wearing jerseys like they’re back in their glory years. I met several longtime fans on opening day, including Brian Thornton, who summed it up perfectly. “I was a regular at the original back in the early 90s,” he says. “Having a Hooters just a golf cart ride away now that I’m retired brings back the good times and makes life here even better.”

othing prepares you for the rollercoaster of emotions you feel as you become a mother to a high school senior. Up until this point, I have tried my hardest to guide my son, Dylan, and my daughter, Olivia, as best I could, instilling words of wisdom and life experiences, helping them set goals and watching from the sidelines as they achieve them. Previously a military family, we moved often, which also meant starting over at new schools for the kids. We started out at Fort Polk, Louisiana (Dylan’s birthplace); then Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, (Olivia’s birthplace); New Gloucester, Maine; Fort Knox, Kentucky and Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. From there, we ended up in Summerfield, where the kids and I have lived for the last 10 years, just

the three of us and our beloved golden retriever, Lily, until she passed. As a photographer — aka “momtographer” — I always have a camera in my hand. I’m known for snapping away while relishing the moments of my kids being kids, our travels, family and friends, documenting our lives as we grow. I had the privilege of taking Dylan’s senior photos this past summer. We carefully planned his outfits and searched for the perfect classic car to include — a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am muscle car complete with a firebird on the hood and in mint condition. He sported a Megadeth band shirt and his long curly locks. It looked like he walked right out of the ‘70s. It was a proud moment for me. When it came time to submit his senior photo, they also needed a baby photo. So, we started looking through all the pictures I had taken over the years for him to choose from. After sifting through so many precious memories,

it just hit me like a ton of bricks, and I began to cry uncontrollably. My heart ached for those moments that passed me by way too soon. I’ve had feelings like that on and off, but this was different. I had the overwhelming feeling of missing my children being little at different stages in their lives and realizing these photos are all I have left of the memories that once were. It all clicked when I remembered my parents often telling me not to rush growing up—that school would fly by, and one day we’d all miss it. As a kid, it’s hard to see how quickly time moves, but suddenly you’re older, and before you know it your life has passed you by. It is a gentle reminder that each day is a privilege. To grow older and to be part of these stages of their lives as they approach adulthood is precious and I will continue to preserve these valuable memories. What a gift.
