After surgery, Sherry recovered from home with no pain pills and walked with no assist—not even a cane! “I am 100% glad that I had this surgery done. My advice for people thinking of getting the surgery would be do not wait! It makes a world of difference.”

All the best

absolutely love this time of year when our readers determine the content of our/their magazine.

It’s time to reveal our Best of the Best winners as selected by our faithful readers who vote for their favorite businesses, restaurants, doctors, stylists, and so much more.

I love the mad rush that ensues when the magazine hits the streets, as readers find out who wins.

The winners excitedly post the results on their social media pages. Akers Media Group provides decals to the winners, which are proudly hung on the doors of their businesses.

I want to be clear about something for those who are unfamiliar with our Best of the Best competition. Nominations are 100 percent based on reader participation. We simply put the categories out there, and readers fill them in. The same holds true for the voting process. Thousands of readers come to our website each year to vote for their favorite people, places, and events. Akers Media Group does not influence the vote or outcome in any way, shape, or form.

Last year, our competition generated a record 20,000 votes as you told us which restaurant serves your favorite meals, which hairstylist provides the best looks, which doctor provides the highest quality of care, which massage therapist truly has healing hands, and which financial advisor steers you down the path to financial freedom. What better way to let professionals know they are doing a good job and are appreciated?

We also enjoy this competition because it’s a go-to reference for those who need a Realtor to help them find a dream home, or a personal trainer who can help them lose weight.

In closing, I’d like to congratulate all the Best of the Best nominees and winners. You are the standard by which others are measured. Kudos to you for making Lake and Sumter counties great places to live, work, and play.

Sincerely,

Cancer Navigation

Addresses All Aspects of Health Care

Care for cancer patients extends well beyond the oncology team. This is why oncology navigation deals with every aspect of a cancer survivor’s health care, which can include one’s primary care physician and any specialists treating other medical conditions. Cancer treatment affects not only cancer survivors and their loved ones. It affects their entire healthcare team.

Patient navigation systems are designed to:

 Reduce cancer incidence and mortality.

 Improve patient quality of life.

 Develop education targeted to specific patient needs.

 Provide access to early screening diagnoses and treatment.

 Help patients navigate the health care system.

 Help patients adhere to their medical treatment.

 Remove any barriers to care.

RBOI returns patient navigation to its roots in the community

Patient navigation began as a community-based practice when Dr. Harold Freeman pioneered an outreach program in Harlem, NYC. Dr. Freeman provided education to a severely underserved group of women with high mortality rates. His studies showed improvement in survival. Over the years, patient navigation grew into a massive, largely hospitalbased program, and moved away from its grassroots beginnings.

RBOI returns patient navigation to its communitybased roots. Our navigators are licensed clinical social workers. We help bridge the gap between the community and large health systems. When individuals can’t access care, don’t have resources, or need psychosocial support, they reach out to us.

PAID PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

 We help connect them to free cancer screenings when available.

 We work alongside hospital navigators to bridge any gaps in care.

 We find resources, financial assistance programs, and groups to help them overcome barriers. RBOI also donates to Citrus Aid Cancer Foundation and Heartfelt Unconditional Giving (HUGs) Charities to help ease financial burdens.

 We serve on community boards, such as those at Tobacco Free Florida, Cancer Alliance of Marion County, or Rotary Club, to educate and bridge gaps.

We are out in the communities we serve, hoping to be that hand of compassion so that people don’t give up before they even get started. And we are there when the active phase of treatment ends and people are looking for emotional and mental health support (often a gap in large health communities).

We have the groups, the counseling, and the time to spend with those whose lives have been affected by cancer, not only on the front end but sometimes for years to come.

Wendy Hall, LCSW, is a certified navigator. Amy Roberts, LCSW, helped one of the first patient navigation programs nationally under a grant funded by the American Cancer Society. They bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to our cancer community. Call Wendy at 352527-0106 or email WHall@rboi.com. Call Amy at 352-732-0277 or email Aroberts@rboi.com.

RBOI’s oncology navigators, licensed clinical social workers, and support programs are available to the community for anyone dealing with cancer, at no cost to either you or your insurance, regardless of where you are being treated.

The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators, the largest national patient navigation network, is founded. 2017

Two recent alligator attacks at Alexander Springs are important reminders that we must take precautions when venturing into the animal’s habitat. SHINING STARS:

Groveland has been o cially certi ed as the rst city in Florida – as well as the Southeastern United States – to be designated as a Dark Sky Community. Not familiar with the honor? Towns, cities, and municipalities are designated a Dark Sky Community for displaying exceptional dedication to the preservation of the night sky through the implementation and enforcement of a quality outdoor lighting ordinance, dark sky education and citizen support of dark skies. Signage has been installed throughout Groveland to celebrate this important achievement and city o cials are working with Toole’s Ace Hardware to carry dark-sky compliant xtures for residents. Meanwhile, all the lamp posts in Lake David and in the historic downtown district have been converted to shielded lighting and a plan is being developed to retro t all city-owned lighting. O cials are also working with developers to ensure new neighborhoods meet dark-sky standards.

Your smile is your greeting to the world. It’s also a window to an important part of your dental health — the alignment of your teeth. Not everyone is born with picture perfect teeth. Crooked teeth or spaces may be a source of embarrassment or self-consciousness. Improper alignment of the teeth and jaws is called a “malocclusion.” Malocclusions can contribute to tooth decay and a host of sometimes painful dental disorders. The good news is that orthodontic treatment can correct malocclusions and help you achieve a healthy, beautiful smile that’s good for life®. What would you like to know about orthodontics?

What causes orthodontic problems?

Most orthodontic problems (malocclusions) are inherited. Examples of these problems are crowding, spacing, protrusion, extra or

missing teeth, and some jaw growth problems. Other problems are acquired as a result of thumb- or finger-sucking, dental disease, accidents, the early or late loss of baby (primary) teeth, or other causes.

Why is treatment so important?

Orthodontic treatment can help create a better bite, making teeth fit better, and decreases the risk of future, and potentially costly dental problems. Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain, and can contribute to tooth enamel wear, difficulty in chewing and/or speaking, and excess stress on supporting bone and gum tissue. Without treatment, many problems simply become worse.

How much does treatment cost?

The cost of orthodontic treatment depends on many factors, including the severity of the problem, its complexity

and length of treatment. Dr. Wollenschlaeger offers a free consultation to discuss treatment options and costs. Many patients find that orthodontic treatment is more affordable today than ever. Dr. Wollenschlaeger offers a variety of payment plans. Employers may offer dental insurance plans with orthodontic benefits, and/or the option to set aside pre-tax dollars in a flexible spending account or other health savings account.

Why select orthodontist?an

Orthodontists are dental specialists who diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial irregularities. They receive an additional two to three years of specialized education beyond dental school to learn the proper way to align and straighten teeth. Only those who successfully complete this formal education may call themselves “orthodontists,” and only orthodontists may be members of the American Association of Orthodontists.

What started out as a small Sumter County farm town circa 1870 has grown considerably, bringing everything residents need to their own backyards.

f you haven’t visited Oxford in a while, you may want to check it out. Gone is most of the farmland, and where citrus and tomato packing houses once stood or where vacant land was located, are beautiful homes, bustling plazas, thriving schools, restaurants, and businesses of all kinds. And it’s still growing.

Something that hasn’t changed however, is Oxford’s welcoming charm,

and Preston Place, a newly built plaza which opened in 2023, is the epitome of that.

The plaza is a one-stop shop for everything needed to better oneself: mind, body, and soul. It consists of two 10,800 square foot ex/industrial buildings behind the o ce/retail properties fronting US Hwy 301 just south of SR 466 in the heart of Oxford. An additional 86,400 square feet of space is projected by the end of 2024.

The plaza is conveniently located at 4060 Thomas St., near major roads like I-75, the Florida Turnpike

and Highway 44, and in the middle of multiple single family home communities. It is also in close proximity to other retail sites, The Villages, The Villages Charter School, various restaurants, medical facilities, banking and more.

Best of all, the tenants of Preston Place, all handpicked by its owners, o er diversity and excellence. So far, they are The Iron Village Fitness Center, Prominent Fox Boutique, K Renae Salon, and Anchored in Health Primary Care. Look for more tenants in future months and enjoy!

Luke Elder and Aaron Carter are known for wearing many hats. They both played high school sports, and after graduating, ended up working together— both respected o cers—for the Ocala Police Department.

In between, Luke and Aaron got into the gym scene, began lifting weights, and in 2021, decided the time was right to make the dream of opening their own gym a reality. They came on board with Preston Place and in May 2022, started building. In February 2023, they opened the doors to The Iron Village, a 4,500 square foot tness center, soon expanding to 6,500 square feet.

“We’ve both been into di erent aspects of tness for a long time and decided we wanted to do something di erent,” Luke says, explaining that while Aaron, a power lifter, is still with the Ocala PD, he retired to oversee the gym’s buildout, and spend time with his baby daughter.

Like most gyms, The Iron Village, open 24/7, o ers a wide variety of exercise machines and equipment. What makes them stand out are the free weights and power

lifting equipment they’ve also incorporated.

“Our gym is geared towards active people who want to lift, instead of those who want to just do machines or classes. To me, that’s great because with free weights, you have a little more freedom,” Aaron says.

With the expansion, there’s also more to come.

“We’ve taken pieces of what we like from di erent local gyms or things we’ve seen and combining it to build on what we think our clients would like best and what is most bene cial,” Aaron adds.

Another cool thing about The Iron Village, is that local law enforcement and active/ retired military personnel receive an exclusive discount. Also available are monthly memberships and day passes for people in the area visiting family.

“I’m glad that Aaron and I met. It’s been a real blessing and it’s been exciting seeing all this come together. Once we opened, it was like a dream come true,” Luke says.

“This is a great area and at Preston Place, we’re like a big family. Everybody knows and talks to each other, and everyone is always here to support each other.”

Prominent Fox Boutique

Leigh Ann Berry rst opened Prominent Fox Boutique seven years ago to o er women a place to go for unique clothing and accessories.

Little did she know God had a few plans of his own. Initially, she opened in Oxford, with intentions of a second location in Leesburg, but when COVID hit, her plans were reversed.

Fast forward to today, and Leigh Ann says everything is as it should be.

“It’s an unexplainable type thing, because when I was able to move back here to Preston Place, it felt as though I’ve always been here. It’s like I’m

home. That’s the only way I know how to describe it. I love it here,” Leigh Ann says. “I also love that more businesses are coming in and that we’re all working together, feeding o one another and supporting each other.”

“With everything that’s here, you don’t have to go anywhere else. Preston Place is like the “better me” plaza,” she adds.

In fact, making people feel good about themselves is part of Leigh Ann’s mission. She says she sells a wide variety of clothes and other merchandise at her store, but she also o ers inspiration every chance she gets.

“My goal here is to make every girl, and every

woman who comes in here, whether young, middle aged, or older, feel good and comfortable in their skin,” Leigh Ann says. “Sometimes, people are their own worst critics, so I like to remind them that God doesn’t make mistakes, and that they are beautiful.”

Besides words of hope, what people will nd at Prominent Fox is trendy, stylish, and classy women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing, western wear,

gifts, home décor, ladies jewelry/accessories, and Christian-based products including co ee mugs, devotionals, bibles, and graphic tees.

Leigh Ann also o ers custom gift baskets, lled with items from her boutique, depending on the occasion.

“We have something here for everyone and I want everyone to feel con dent in who they are, blessed, and happier when they leave.”

During her time in Iraq, serving with the US Army, Amy Ester found that her passion was something more than working as an x-ray technician, a mindset that ignited her journey into nursing.

“Before leaving the Army, I really felt the pull to be more involved with patients and their health care. I continued to work and go to school until I became a nurse practitioner,” Amy says. “My desire to open my own practice burned deep inside me.”

After more than 13 years in the eld, she has worked in women’s health, pediatrics, and emergency medicine. After becoming frustrated with insurance companies’

limitations, Amy branched out and opened Anchored in Health Primary Care

As a certi ed family nurse practitioner, Amy focuses on general medicine, including annual visits, women’s issues, sick and acute visits, plus medically managed weight loss, vitamin infusions and more. She also sees patients of all ages and perhaps the best part of all, is that the practice is membership based, meaning no co-pays or additional o ce visits and access to your health care provider.

“I am membership based so patients don’t have to worry about co-pays, just their monthly membership fee, which allows them to get an annual exam with screening labs, sick visits, virtual visits and after-hour access,”

With that, Amy’s primary focus is building relationships with patients, getting to truly know them and working as a team to get their health back on track, and searching for the root of their problems.

“In traditional health care settings, it’s impossible to really develop a good rapport and relationship with my patients with such limited time constraints, so here, my appointments are anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour,” Amy says. “I really want my patients to know and feel that when they come into my o ce, they aren’t just another number, and this isn’t just another ordinary practice.”

When Kristin Caruthers opened the doors to K Renae Salon more than 8 years ago, she was at a di erent location, but her intention has always remained the same: making people look and feel beautiful in every way possible.

K Renae has always specialized in everything hair related, but when she moved into Preston Place in Feb. 2023, she brought in a nail tech and esthetician to enhance the services o ered.

“We’ve built a really big reputable clientele here in The Villages, so we wanted to provide them with everything they need, beauty-wise, in one place, so we incorporated even more services to really amp things up,” Kristin says.

At K Renae, every hair stylist is trained in many specialties from everyday cuts and styles to extensions, razor cuts, highlights and balayage.

“Every one of my stylists can do it all. Each one has been vetted by me and they are all highly trained in

everything,” Kristin says, explaining that K Renae’s new nail tech focuses on basic and specialty nail designs and her esthetician o ers facials, massages, microblading, eyebrow waxing, and much more.

Additionally, Kristin says many of her stylists have been with her for years.

“I’ve been able to keep most of my stylists. Many of them have been with me since we started, which is a testimony to what we’ve built here,” Kristin adds.

Most of all however, Kristin says what she can o er her clients at K Renae is motivation, love, and transformations.

“It’s a wonderful thing to have someone come in and leave here feeling totally good about themselves and happy with how they look, especially if they’ve had a prior bad experience, or a service they were unhappy about,” Kristin says. “That’s the most rewarding thing to see happen, because when they are transformed from the outside, they are transformed on the inside, too.”

Hear for you!

Established in 2018 by Doctor of Audiology Laura Bradley Pratesi, Citrus Hearing is a one-stop audiology clinic for patients of all ages.

he practice o ers: diagnostic audiologic/hearing aid evaluation, hearing aid dispensing and tting, hearing care for infants and children, earwax removal, real ear measurement, remote hearing care, tinnitus treatment options, hearing aid repair and maintenance, and more. The clinic can also help patients with the process for determining whether they are good candidates for a cochlear implant, another option that could help when hearing aids no longer prove bene cial.

For patient Al Cooper, who has su ered with progressively worsening hearing loss since 1984, the procedure, which he underwent in October 2022 on his right ear thus far, has been life changing.

Q: How has getting a cochlear implant impacted your life?

Al: Not only do I hear better than I have in many years, even with the most powerful hearing aids, but I’m now able to carry on conversations with my wife Nancy, as well as with my friends and co-workers. The surgery has brought me back from being a “personal hermit” on the verge of clinical depression to being someone who wants to talk to other people. Once I have the second implant, I’m planning on getting a smartphone that will interface directly with the implants and I hope to be able to get back to communicating by phone with remote friends and family rather than just by email. Also, a couple of months ago, my wife Nancy

was watching a movie after I had gone to bed, and she decided to turn o the captions on our TV while she watched. The next afternoon, I watched over half of a movie before I realized that the captioning wasn’t there. I had been slowly weaning myself o reading them for some time and found that I didn’t miss them. Since I was no longer relying on the captions, I decided to leave them o and I’ve only wished they were there a few times when someone was talking very fast, but even then, the captioning often failed to stay on screen long enough to read them.

Dr. Pratesi about Al’s progress since his cochlear implant surgery:

Mr. Cooper’s pre-op scores were between 0-2 percent word understanding, and then about three months post-op, he was at 80 percent speech understanding. That has been a pretty incredible transition to witness. Our second Audiologist, Dr. Teresa Parsons, has done an amazing job of working with Al and getting him to this point.

ver 2 million people moved to Florida in the last decade and more than 1,000 people continue to move to Central Florida on a daily basis, the Census Bureau reports. The numbers are expected to continue to increase and with the population of seniors in Florida increasing, the demand for home health care services continues to increase. According to the home health care association, roughly 350,000 seniors in Florida use home care agencies for skilled or custodial care.

The need for home health care in the state of Florida has grown for many reasons. The sunshine and warm weather continue to attract the retired population, but it’s the advances in medical science and technology that have given people options that were not previously possible. Many treatments that could only be done in a hospital can now be done in the home. Home health care is usually less expensive and obviously more convenient for the patient. The risk of infection decreases when a patient can receive treatment and recover in their own home. With advances, treatments in the home are just as e ective as they would be in a hospital or a skilled nursing facility. In-home care also allows the patient to get individualized care, as compared to a hospital that typically has more than one patient assigned to each clinician.

Lake Centre Home Care (LCHC) is a certi ed agency with deep roots in the local community. Shayna Grunewald, CEO and Lori Davis, COO of LCHC were both born in Leesburg, in Lake County. “Quality, professional care isn’t an option for us. It’s our life,” said Shayna. “Our small community is growing, and we can’t a ord to cut corners and take risks with the lives of our loved ones and neighbors. It’s a matter of necessity,” Shayna continued.

PAID PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
Shayna Grunewald Andrea Smart Lori Davis

“We are only as good as our reputation within our community,” said Lori. “Repetition with the quality of service we provide makes our reputation and our reputation gives us our success,” Lori said.

LCHC is committed to meeting the needs of skilled nursing patients as well as private duty nursing clients. LCHC is dedicated to making quality, in-home care for the residents of Lake, Sumter and Marion Counties a reality. LCHC understands when people make the move to the sunshine state, they intend to live an independent Florida lifestyle as long as they can.

For skilled care, the clinicians at LCHC follow a doctor’s order and go to a patient’s home to perform an initial start of care assessment. Once a doctor refers a patient for home health services at LCHC, the sta at LCHC will call and schedule an appointment. The sta at LCHC then provides care and helps coordinate treatment based on the orders. The order may include nursing as well as therapy services. The home health agency sta will talk to the doctor about the patient’s care

and keep them updated about the progress of the patient.

While a patient receives home health care, the home health sta can educate the patient and caregivers to continue any care needed, including medication, wound care, and therapy.

Private duty is a type of home care that is underused and often misunderstood. Andrea Smart is the Director of Private duty for LCHC and understands what private duty clients need. Andrea was born in Florida and raised in neighboring Sumter County and has over 20 years’ experience in home health. For Andrea, its personal. “Many people may not be aware of how this type of hourly nursing can bene t their loved one,” said Andrea. “Private duty provides long-term, comprehensive hourly care. Private duty patients can have a care giver in the home anywhere from 4 to 24 hours per day,” Andrea said.

Private duty is private pay and is sometimes covered under a patient’s long term care insurance policy. Private duty provides one on one care tailored to a patient’s unique health

challenges and needs. Some of the duties performed include bathing, assistance with dressing, toileting, meal prep, medication reminders, respite care and companion services and that is just to list a few.

LCHC has a team of quali ed clinicians to care for home health patients as well as private duty clients trained and ready to go. LCHC cares for patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Keeping patients out of the hospitals and in their own home is our goal.

Working as a team

he team at Ellis Integrative Family Practice includes a group of compassionate women who all have a similar goal in mind: to improve the health of their patients. With that, Gretta Ellis, the practice’s founder, not only inspires her patients, but her sta as well.

Tina (LPN) has been working with Gretta since she opened her practice in May 2021. She has over 15 years’ experience with natural/integrative medicine and feels blessed to be part of such an amazing team.

Kally has also been a vital part of the team from the start. She is currently enrolled and working towards her BS in Nutrition. “My goal is to become the nutritionist here at Ellis Integrative and work hand in hand with Gretta to continue to teach and guide patients as she has done with me personally,” Kally says.

Ivey started at Ellis Integrative more than a year ago and had no idea how much she would excel at her job

and in her own health journey. Ivy shares: “I could barely do daily tasks without being out of breath, fatigued, or coughing due to my asthma. I thought Gretta was crazy when she started talking to me about gut health, but now I couldn’t be more thankful for how she has changed my life and I truly love going to work every day!”

Keisha (LPN) joined Ellis Integrative in 2022 and couldn’t be happier. “I have learned so much working with Gretta and love the idea of combining traditional medicine with diet modi cations and immune support to overcome the challenges that come with cancer treatments due to her own family members that have battled cancer in the past,” she says.

Krystal (LPN) is the newest addition to the team. She has over 10 years’ experience in the medical eld but just recently started learning about integrative medicine. She has struggled with multiple auto-immune diseases since childhood. “Mainstream medicine simply puts band-aid medications on the problem and never looks for

the root cause,” says Krystal. In the past year she has been able to stop all prescription medications and feels very thankful and blessed to have been led to Gretta.

Danielle Reynolds (CPC) is the billing manager and works remotely for Ellis Integrative. She has been a member of the team since May 2021.

From autoimmune disease to gut health, Gretta truly is a Wonder Woman. In the past two years Ellis Integrative has continued to grow by o ering many other services such as PRP regenerative therapy, IV nutritional therapy, a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, a weight loss program, and aesthetics (Botox, ller, Harmony Pro Laser).

ith an ingrained air for decorating and a love of working with people, Rosalyn Housley found her niche decades ago.

Raised in Bradenton, Florida, Rosalyn was just 24 when she started working with the direct sale company Home Interiors. A natural at decorating and selling, she quickly rose through the ranks.

“It was a great work-from-home career. Not too many people nd their passion where they can’t imagine doing anything else,” says Rosalyn, who was with Home Interiors for 25 years until it went out of business in 2005.

Jim Housley, Rosalyn’s husband, was a contractor and custom home builder in Bradenton. In 2005, eager for a change of pace, the couple moved to the mountains of North Carolina. Jim began building vacation cabins, which Rosalyn decorated; they sold the cabins turn-key.

It was a good run until the 2008 crash turned the economy upside down.

Birth of Rustic Rose

Fortunately, the Housleys had a plan in mind.

Noticing that the tourist town they lived near had no home décor shop, they opened The Rustic Rose in Hayesville, North Carolina. The shop highlighted what Rosalyn has always done best—providing customers with a variety of unique home accents and gift options.

“My business had been going to people’s homes, so I didn’t think I wanted to be a brick-and-mortar store, but then I did it,” smiles Rosalyn. She happily compared the experience to that of Sam Druker, the country store shopkeeper on the 1960’s television show “Green Acres.”

Rosalyn realized she loved being like Sam Druker, so when she and Jim moved back to Bradenton in 2010, they opened The Rustic Rose

there along with a satellite shop in Sarasota in 2011.

“Along the way, people were saying we should check out The Villages,” recalls Rosalyn.

Fortunately, they did.

In January 2014, The Rustic Rose opened in The Villages and customer response was immediate.

It’s no exaggeration to say Rosalyn knows a thing or two about home décor. In 24 years of marriage, she and Jim have lived in 24 homes.

Rosalyn relied on her decorating instinct and years of experience to build an appealing inventory of home accents and gift items.

From mirrors and wall art to lamps and lanterns, metal and copper pieces, vases, gurines, candles and candle holders, silk and foam owers, seasonal pieces and much more, she lled The Rustic Rose with items that soon made it one of the area’s favorite places to shop.

“Coastal décor is very popular, but we also have a “Florida look’ that is not too beachy,” says Rosalyn.

Store displays provide inspiration by allowing shoppers to imagine items in their own homes. Because Rosalyn makes it a point to seek out the best values, customers love the fact that they get the most for their dollar.

Fashion enters the picture

It only made sense that Rosalyn branched out and added apparel to the shop’s inventory.

The opportunity to choose comfortable, stylish fashions and accessories at realistic prices was a big hit with customers. The concept was so successful that in 2018, The Rustic Rose outgrew its store. There simply wasn’t enough room for all the enticing fashion nds, home accents and gifts under one roof.

Rosalyn solved that dilemma by moving the fashion portion of the store across the Brownwood Paddock Square® and in 2018 opened The Rustic Rose Boutique. The two shops are just a short walk apart.

Long-time employee Nicole Scarpelli became manager of the boutique. Kara Clark became manager of the home shop.

Kara came to The Rustic Rose in 2017, after leaving a very di erent career at Disney as an athletic trainer. A mutual friend told her Rosalyn was looking for a manager, but that person would have to be a perfect t for the store.

“Kara came to work for us on the weekends and it wasn’t long before we o ered her the job. She was a perfect t for the store and for me,” recalls Rosalyn.

“Both Kara and Nicole are people magnets; they’re sweethearts, but both are super smart,” says Rosalyn, who calls Nicole and Kara the “daughters of her choosing.”

Between both shops, The Rustic Rose has 25 employees. wait on the customers, so they’re relatable,” says Rosalyn.

“Four hundred items go out of our store every day. Many of the items just have a small number of them. When a customer says they may come back for something, it might not be here,” says Rosalyn, noting that the warehouse manager makes multiple trips daily to the Rustic Rose’s warehouse a half-mile away

One aspect that sets Rustic Rose apart from other boutiques is the way Rosalyn and Nicole strategize markets in New York City’s Garment

“You can go to the markets and see a lot of the same things over and over, but our goal is to nd that new exciting thing, the next brand that’s going to be di erent and something unique you’re not going to see in Price point is another area where

“Part of our appeal is that we have affordable styles, so I always

strive to get that best price,” adds Nicole.

Customers don’t have to understand all the ins and outs of the fashion industry. That’s up to Rosalyn and Nicole—and they take it seriously.

“Customers may not be aware of how fast fashion cycles through styles and changes throughout the season,” says Nicole, who relishes the responsibility of keeping her finger on the pulse of what’s happening in the industry.

“My goal is always to stay on top of the ever-changing fashion world so my customers can be up to date with all the current fashions,” she says.

The boutique carries over 70 different fashion brands, including Pretty Woman, Zac & Rachel, Fashion Cage Ltd., Southern Lady, Vocal, Origami, Cable & Gauge, and many more.

In addition to comfortable, stylish apparel for all personalities and body types, there is also a wide selection of fashion accessories and jewelry to choose from, including

earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and scarves.

Celebrating milestones

The Rustic Rose is hitting two major milestones within just six months.

The boutique just celebrated its ve-year anniversary in June. The event was marked by a whole week of signi cant sales and drawings for prizes. In January 2024, the home store will celebrate 10 years in business. Big sales are also planned to commemorate this anniversary.

When it comes to owning and running the business she loves, Rosalyn’s motto is “Pass it on.” She sold her Rustic Rose shop in Bradenton to that store manager in 2016. Come 2026, both Rustic Rose shops in The Villages will have new owners--but with totally familiar faces.

Rosalyn has a plan in place for these Rustic Rose locations to be owned by their current managers, Nicole and Kara, by the end of 2026.

“Both of my managers are amazing. We worked out a business deal where

they can become owners. I work my way to retirement, and they work their way to store ownership,” says Rosalyn, who is happy to see the shops stay in The Villages.

“I started working with Rosalyn nine years ago when I was going to college,” says Nicole. “I’ve gotten to work beside her, and she’s taught me everything I know. We have mutual trust, respect, and love for each other. It’s so hard to put into words how very fortunate and absolutely blessed I feel.”

“I love the store–it’s my home, it’s my village. I genuinely believe in what we’ve created here,” says Kara.

“Rosalyn created a family business and I’m just continuing to grow on the foundation she has laid. I view it as a huge blessing that Rosalyn would entrust me with her legacy. The future is bright.”

“It’s been an amazing journey. All the right doors opened and coming to The Villages was the best thing ever. Small business is really promoted in The Villages,” says Rosalyn. “I’ve worked hard, but I feel so blessed to have had the joy of doing this most of my life.”

Dino Perelli reflects on 50-year musical journey.

ino Perelli’s lifelong passion for music began around the age of 13 when he formed his rst band.

The next year, 1969, Dino’s band, The Reason Why, won a battle of the bands, which led to a recording session with Chicago-based Cha Cha Records. The 45 Johnny Come Home b/w The Game of War — both written by Dino — was released in 1970. Dino was 14. Dino moved around frequently

At age 19, Dino formed a group called “Dino and Friends,” which he believes was the youngest non-family traveling act in the country during the mid-1970s.

“Dino and Friends” gained valuable experience and honed their skills playing numerous hotels.

Dino’s musical journey continued in several di erent bands over the years. He eventually returned to Las Vegas and became a xture

The sizzle on sunshine and sunblockers

Don’t let sun get under your skin.

et’s face it, if you vacation or live in Florida, you are going to be out in the sun. Sunshine, after all, is what we are famous for.

It can also be our worst enemy. Like so many things in life, direct sun exposure is one of those things that are good in small amounts, but harmful if excessive. You need some sun exposure daily to manufacture Vitamin D. Ultraviolet light in sunshine acts on a chemical in your skin and converts it to Vitamin D. We are still learning how important Vitamin D is to our health. We know it is critical to e ective functioning of our immune system. In the U.S., nearly half of the total population is Vitamin D de cient, de ned as a blood level of less than 20 ng/ml. That percentage is 80% for Blacks and 70% for Hispanics.

How much sun does anyone need? The answer is complicated by many factors. The time of year is one. You need less exposure during the summer than during the winter. Midday sun is stronger than morning or afternoon sun. Skin tone is another. Those with darker skin need more exposure. Most sources say to get 10 to 30 minutes of

direct sunshine several times per week.

Of course, too much sun can be harmful. Dangers range from sunburn to increased risk of skin cancer later in life, including lifethreatening melanoma.

Assuming that staying out of the sun altogether is not realistic, you can protect yourself several ways:

• Limit outdoor activities to the morning or late afternoon when possible.

• Cover up with a wide-brimmed hat and clothing.

• Don’t forget good quality sunglasses.

• There are many brands of clothing that are intended for sun protection and say so on the label. These work even when you are wet or sweating.

Choosing a sunblock can be daunting because there are so many choices. My favorite guide has always been from the Environmental Working Group (https://www.ewg.org/ sunscreen/). Follow their instructions for how to choose and use sunblock. You won’t go wrong.

South Lake’s Alicia Weber lives for shattering physical fitness stereotypes and world records.

JUST BOOKING IT

ow many leg raises can you do during a exed bar hang with palmtoward-you grip?

How about plyometric parallel bar dips?

How many sumo squat arm aps or high knee jump push-ups can you muster in three minutes?

And just how long can you remain in an ipsilateral one-arm, one-leg plank?

Alicia Weber can answer those questions with her head held high. She has set records in every one of those physical tness categories and over 1,000 more. Those feats have earned her the moniker “World Record Weber.”

THE ROPE CLIMBER

Alicia Weber has been into tness literally her whole life.

She grew up in a Pittsburgh household surrounded by parents with healthcare backgrounds, and before even starting school,

Alicia was working out regularly. By age 4, she was lifting weights, running alongside and occasionally accompanying her dad, a triathlete, to races. At age 6, she was running on a half-mile cinder track. Somewhere between 4 and 6, she was doing more pull-ups than most grown-ups can manage. In kindergarten, Alicia, who was always game for trying extraordinary and unique things, set a goal of climbing a tree every day.

But the rst realization of what she was truly capable of came in third grade.

“I was a self-coached, highlymotivated athlete early on, but in elementary school, teachers believed I was shy and weak because of my demeanor. I was quiet; I always went to the back of lines, and I didn’t raise my hand much,” Alicia says. “But inside, I could not wait to prove them wrong.”

How she went about it foreshadowed Alicia’s mind-blowing achievements.

“On a very rare occasion in gym class, they brought a 20-foot rope down and let students try to climb it, but none of them could make it all the

way up,” Alicia says. “My third-grade teacher, who was one of the people who thought I was weak and shy, showed up at the end of class to get us, and I thought, ‘This is it. This is going to be my de ning moment. Things are going to change.’”

Alicia says she was “on re,” so instead of getting in line with her classmates, decided to give that rope a try.

“I hurried over to the rope, grabbed it, and climbed up and down ve times in a row, for a total of 200 feet. After that I thought, ‘Enough said.’”

FAST FORWARD

Thinking back to that day in gym class, Alicia, now 43, says she’ll never forget the wide-eyed look on everyone’s face, how her teacher’s gradebook opped open, and the only sound heard was that teacher’s pencil hitting the oor.

“There was not one word ever again about me being weak or shy. And in that moment, I knew that one day I would hold world records in strength and endurance,” she adds.

Call it intuition, a spur of the moment plan, or coincidence, but Alicia became an elite multi-sport athlete. Record Setter, a website that calls itself “the new home of world records” credits her with establishing more than 1,100 world records in physical tness events from 2008-’23.

Her rst record, for 75 consecutive bar dips in an all women category, was set on Feb. 21, 2008 when she was 27.

In December 2012, at age 33, after breaking 188 world records, Record Setter named Alicia “The most proli c female record setter in the world.”

Other highlights include breaking 1,000 world records in 1,785 days— equivalent to one record every 42.8 hours from March 6, 2012, to Jan. 23, 2017—with Record Setter. Determined to continually better herself, Alicia’s even broken some of her own records multiple times.

ALICIA’S MANY FACES

In addition to her lifelong passion for breaking world records, Alicia has long been an accomplished athlete. In 6th grade (1992), she started competing in individual sports.

At age 16, Alicia came out on top at her rst

national championship in the 3,000 meters at Junior Olympics in 1996.

“I was the only athlete at that time to compete and qualify for nationals in the 400M, 800M, 1,500M, 3,000M, 5,000M, 5K cross county, and 10,000M with USA Track and Field,” Alicia recalls.

From there, she was practically unstoppable. From 1996-’98, Alicia won seven medals at various national championship competitions and was the only two-time All-American in 10,000 meters while still in high school.

She was also the last All Female American in the event at Junior Nationals, (it is no longer contested for women). As an elite triathlete, she made her rst world team at age 19 for Olympic distance triathlon. The next year, Alicia competed in the Olympic Triathlon World Championships in Perth, Australia, for age 20-and-under.

From there, she became a Gator, winning letters in track and cross country under Coach J.J. Clark, her main motivation for attending the University of Florida (UF). In 2002, Alicia graduated with a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and lm studies. Later, she received a bachelor’s in biology, and was on her way toward a Doctorate of Physical Therapy when she transferred out and became a licensed massage therapist in 2011.

Alicia has also written three books: “Wild Under the Waves,” a biology-based adult coloring book that focuses on marine life; “World Record Weber Wellness Routines,” which highlights the records Alicia has set and the routines that have helped keep her in shape; and “Your Winning Way to Physical Fitness,” a tness/ nutrition planner with a 52-week logbook people can use to track their daily routines, complete with motivational quotes. All three books are available on Amazon.

Alicia says she likes to think people enjoy the things she’s shared in her books and hopes more than anything, that her tips and insights

BODY 094 / LAKEANDSUMTER STYLE .COM AUG'23
ALICIA HAS ALSO WRITTEN THREE BOOKS!

serve to motivate, inspire, and help people achieve whatever their own dreams may be.

If that’s not enough, Alicia is into motivational speaking, comedy, and creative writing/blogging, but she’s not ready to give up pushing her body to the limit. She continues to compete in 19 individual sports, though not simultaneously.

“I usually compete in about four sports a year but the most I have done in one year has been 10 sports,” Alicia says.

LOOKING AHEAD

Today, besides continuing to establish world records, Alicia lives in Clermont and works as a massage therapist helping people through ailments that limit their ability to enjoy life to the fullest. She also doubles as a personal trainer for people interested in losing weight, gain strength or increase their bone density as they age, a topic she says is not talked about enough.

tness trainers can say they’ve set 1,140 world records and garnered 193 victories and 300 top 10 nishes in 367 elite competitions since 1992?

“That I’ve been able to accomplish what I have blows me away, especially the records,” Alicia says. “I never thought I would be able to do as much as I’ve done. It’s really exciting to achieve beyond your goals and I hope that continues to inspire people; to inspire me, for a long time.”

Personally, Alicia says she recently attained a longtime goal she’d been working on throughout COVID— placing in the top 100 women in the world in three sports.

In 2022, Alicia says she nished 20th in the world for lightweight women in Concept2 RowErg, 57th in the world for Concept2 BikeErg, and 90th in the world for Concept2 SkiErg, her most challenging category

the world at World Championships in all three, and I nally did that and honestly, I feel proud of myself,” Alicia says.

As far as new records, Alicia has broken 21 of them since ringing in the new year. About a dozen more are still pending, and her plans include pressing on inde nitely.

“I have so many things I’m working on that I just kind of see how I’m feeling and where I’m at because sometimes I feel stronger in some things than others,” Alicia explains. “I just take it day by day, really. I like constantly improving myself, and I like helping others do the same. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Non-invasive treatment for Prostate Cancer

r. Jack Cassell, a urologist serving Central Florida talks about HIFU or High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, a non-invasive treatment of Prostate Cancer that is now covered by Medicare. Unlike surgery and radiation, HIFU is single outpatient treatment that uses focused sound waves to treat prostate cancer with low risk of side e ects. Patients recover at home and are back to normal activities within a few days.

HOW PREVALENT IS PROSTATE CANCER IN THE U.S.?

Prostate cancer is very prevalent in the U.S. and approximately 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. In fact, prostate cancer is diagnosed at the same rate of breast cancer in the U.S. Prostate cancer is the most common, non-skin cancer, found in men and the American Cancer Society estimates 288,300 cases will be diagnosed in the U.S. this year alone with 34,700 deaths. Prostate cancer is highly curable when caught in the early stages before it has spread to other organs.

HOW IS PROSTATE CANCER DIAGNOSED?

Prostate cancer is being diagnosed at much earlier stages due to a simple blood test called PSA (Prostate Speci c Antigen) which is provided annually by a primary care physician or urologist. An elevated PSA score will lead to a biopsy performed by a urologist to sample the prostate tissue to detect cancerous cells. Over

096 / LAKEANDSUMTER STYLE .COM AUG'23

90% of the men diagnosed with prostate cancer have capsule con ned prostate cancer, which is treatable with many di erent options. Unfortunately, prostate cancer has very few symptoms in the early stages and once the symptoms arise, it is normally too late to treat the cancer and the patient is left managing metastatic prostate cancer.

WHAT IS HIFU FOR PROSTRATE CANCER?

HIFU is a non-invasive, outpatient procedure that uses ultrasound energy to heat and destroy cancerous tissue in the prostate. It is radiationfree and bloodless, and studies show that the risk of side e ects, such as erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence, are signi cantly lower with HIFU than with surgery (radical prostatectomy) or radiation. The average treatment time is 1-2 hours and the patient returns home following the HIFU treatment. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, so this does not cause discomfort to the patient. In fact, it is less invasive than the prostate biopsy needed to diagnose the cancer!

The Sonablate system allows doctors to obtain a real-time image of the prostate and plan exactly where they want to deliver the HIFU energy, thus destroying the targeted tissue. The physician also receives immediate feedback to con rm the targeted prostatic tissue has been eliminated.

Unlike surgery, which requires the physician to remove the entire prostate, HIFU enables the patient to receive whole gland treatment, hemiablation or a focal treatment. If there is only cancer on one side of the prostate, the physician and patient can determine if only the cancerous

portion of the prostate is treated. The precision of the HIFU system allows the physician to see the nerve bundles that control sexual function and to avoid harming these critical structures. My patients select HIFU because it provides high treatment cure rates while minimizing risk that negatively impact a patient’s longterm quality of life. My patients are back to their normal lifestyles within a couple days and on the golf course within a week following treatment. I have been o ering HIFU since 2007 and have been thrilled with how well my patients have done since then.

HOW DO HIFU RESULTS COMPARE TO SURGERY & RADIATION?

My patients do very well with HIFU and there is no post-operate pain or discomfort. HIFU provides my patients a similar cancer cure rate to surgery and radiation and o ers them a much higher quality of life following treatment. Surgery and radiation are very e ective at treating the cancer, but often leave men with permanent side e ects such as erectile dysfunction and or incontinence. For early-stage prostate cancer, HIFU is my treatment of choice and I expect it to grow signi cantly with the recent coverage from Medicare.

There are over 100 published and peer reviewed studies with some of the studies having 15-year follow-up. A 2018 study with 625 published by European Association of Urology reported ve-year HIFU results that showed a 98% metastasis-free survival rate with 98% of the patients maintaining urinary continence similar to pre-treatment. Another study of 1379 men, with some being followed for 15 years, achieved metastasis-free survival and prostate

cancer-speci c mortality at seven years was 100%.

HOW LONG IS RECOVERY AFTER HIFU?

After a brief recovery from general anesthesia at the hospital, patients return home to recover more comfortably. Patients are routinely back to work in a couple days and typically able to resume normal activities within a week.

IS HIFU COVERED BY INSURANCE AND WHERE DO YOU TREAT?

Some of the most exciting news in urology and prostate cancer care is the recent coverage of HIFU by Medicare and some of the commercial plans. I expect all the commercial plans will be covering HIFU by the end of this year. Up until January of this year, HIFU was an out of pocket treatment cost for patients. Now, my patients enjoy the bene ts of the latest generation of treatment, and it is covered by Medicare and some insurance plans. I treat my HIFU patients at UF Health Leesburg hospital. This location is conveniently located near The Villages and not far from my o ce in Mount Dora, Florida.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR HIFU?

Typically men with a prostate gland of less than 40 grams with localized prostate cancer (meaning the tumor has not spread outside of the prostate gland) may be candidates for HIFU. The other diagnostic results we look at to determine if you qualify for HIFU is a PSA of 20 or less and a Gleason score of seven or less.

Customer Testi moni al

We are so happy to have selected Premier Pool Contractor and become part of the Premier Pool family! We interviewed and saw firsthand the quality and performance of many of the pool companies in our area. It was very easy to see that Premier Pool was not only the best but head and shoulders above all the other pool companies! Being a retired professional engineer designing and managing construction projects, I recognized Premier Pool Contractor was very well organized as a company and had a working model that was very efficient and very timely! Premier Pool Contractor has the in-house capabilities to complete the majority of the work, and the few areas they do sub out parts of the construction were of the highest quality in their field of expertise. In addition, Premier Pool Contractor stocks all the necessary materials and equipment necessary for your pool project. The materials and equipment they provide for your project are some of the highest quality available! With this in-house capability and materials and equipment in their warehouse, they have total control of the quality and timeliness of the project. For example, from the first day of construction to having the finished pool full of water was less than four months! I mentioned being part of the Premier family; the folks we had contact with, from the owner, office staff, field managers, and construction crews, were extremely customer oriented, professional, knowledgeable, and very friendly! I can’t say enough about the quality of the finished product! Our pool, spa, and extended lanai turned out amazing! I would highly recommend Premier Pool Contractor of Leesburg, Florida."

WILD FOR GAME MEAT

Ostrich, elk, and boar, oh my!

PHOTOS: NICOLE HAMEL

hortly after entering Red Wing Restaurant, customers often notice the “regulars.”

I’m referring to deer heads and boar heads mounted on the wall, as well as a stu ed turkey.

“We put Christmas attire on them during the holidays, and in October we put Halloween costumes on them,” says Patrick Borsey, owner of the restaurant. Somehow, these animals did not end up on the dinner plate. Their friends weren’t so lucky.

The Red Wing menu features quail, ostrich, elk, rabbit, duck, frog, alligator, boar,

You heard that right. At this restaurant o State Road 33 in Groveland, almost every animal imaginable is fair game

RECIPE

Webster’s de nes game as “wild animals hunted for sport or food.” From boar to elk, Red Wing is peddling these exotics as the other red meat.

Patrick says wild-game meats are lower in fats and higher in proteins than meats from domestic animals. And since game animals use their muscles more than domesticated animals, their meat is leaner and a bit more coarse.

“Game meat is healthier because it doesn’t have the hormones, antibiotics, and steroids that you nd in meat purchased at a grocery store,” Patrick says. “Also, with elk and venison, there’s less fat in them than a steak.”

The restaurant is housed in a wooden building originally built as a family home in 1948. It was later used as a meeting place for local grove pickers.

The restaurant’s décor re ects its cuisine. Inside, a chandelier made of deer antlers lights up wooden walls in the main dining room, while Mason Jar chandeliers hang over each booth. Funny signs in the main dining room promote “Patrick’s Roadkill Café” and “creamed possum.”

Patrick and a business partner opened Red Wing in 2005. Neither had prior restaurant or hunting experience. But Patrick knew his restaurant needed to be di erent. Most restaurant menus give the impression that nature provides us with only a handful of edible animal species, namely beef, chicken, and pork.

Red Wing reminds us that there’s a whole world of alternative meat out there beyond those factoryfarmed animals. While a juicy burger or steak hits the spot, sometimes people crave something that feels a little wilder and more adventurous – like venison Shepherd’s pie, rabbit sausage, and elk chops.

“WE ARE LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, SO WE HAVE TO OFFER UNIQUE DISHES TO GET PEOPLE TO DRIVE HERE.”

—PATRICK BORSEY

“We are located in the middle of nowhere, so we have to o er unique dishes to get people to drive here,” says Patrick, who is now the sole owner of Red Wing. “Some people drive from as far as Titusville to enjoy our game meats.”

Patrick orders game meat from reputable companies based in New Zealand, Colorado, and elsewhere. All the meat is federally inspected. For him, it’s a point of pride to raise game’s game.

“You have to start with quality products,” Patrick says. “You’re not going to stay in business if you buy cheap products. Even though I never hunted or owned my own restaurant before this, I have become quite experienced at cooking the meat and have come up with original recipes. I’ve also been blessed to have good cooks who have helped me along the way.”

And he has learned one valuable lesson over the years: Never drop someone’s favorite critter from the menu.

“The menu has pretty much stayed intact since Day One,” Patrick says. “I learned that customers become disappointed if we discontinue something.”

Of course, newbies to the restaurant may be

“GAME MEAT IS HEALTHIER BECAUSE IT DOESN’T HAVE THE HORMONES, ANTIBIOTICS, AND STEROIDS THAT YOU FIND IN MEAT PURCHASED AT A GROCERY STORE.”

Time to wine down

Alisha Blake passionate about wining and dining anyone who steps in her Garden.

lisha Blake enjoys cooking and drinking wine. She also likes to share her favorite pastimes. That’s why she purchased the historic Magnolia House in downtown Leesburg and opened The Sipping Garden and Bistro, “a unique wine bar with small fare,” in November 2022.

“I wanted something quaint, where I could offer great wine and food to everyone out of a place that feels welcoming and like an extension of my home,” Alisha says.

That concept has been ingrained in Alisha’s heart since childhood. It’s something she witnessed almost daily at her parents’ popular diner in Ocklawaha.

As an adult, Alisha managed a pizzeria for 11 years before changing her career path entirely.

“After my parents sold the restaurant, I decided to go to x-ray school,” Alisha explains. “I became a CT tech and I’ve done that for the past 13 years.”

Somewhere in between, Alisha also discovered that there’s much more to wine than simply drinking it.

“Besides appreciating the taste of good wine, I became interested

in its roots and origins. There’s so much to learn about wine; it’s fascinating,” she adds. “For the past 8-9 years, I’ve been learning wine. I became a Level 1 and Level 2 sommelier, certified through the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET).”

Then COVID happened.

Alisha, who was working in the healthcare industry at the time, says she felt burnt out following the height of the pandemic.

That’s when she toasted to the idea of opening a place where she could teach people all about wine and please their palates with delectable treats, all in one sitting.

“I basically got to my peak of being an X-ray tech and thought, ‘Ok, time to learn something new, let’s open a bistro.’”

And what a charming bistro it is.

Style Photographer Nicole Hamel and I were immediately impressed with The Sipping Garden when we recently visited.

Walking in, were enticed by vibrant colors and hunger-inducing aromas coming from the kitchen.

We also noticed plenty of wine bottles—old and new world varieties, reds, and whites—on racks throughout the place, and couldn’t help but fantasize about one

charcuterie boards, creamy burrata, and salads, to crostini topped with chicken salad, or prosciutto and Brie, mini crab cakes, cordon blue bites, and petite beef wellingtons, everything sounded tasty and well thought out.

Additionally, Alisha daily makes homemade soup. We enjoyed her delicious broccoli cheese soup served with two slices of toasted crostini.

We also tried, and loved, the beef wellington and her award-winning prosciutto Brie bites— freshly made crostini topped with g spread, sliced fruit, brie, prosciutto, and balsamic glaze—dubbed ‘best appetizer’ at the Leesburg Area Chamber of Commerce 2023 Taste of Lake & Business Expo in March.

“Mostly, the menu is curated to my taste; things that I would want to choose if I were to go somewhere. And I love making soups. Soups are

Garden’s soup of the day, new wines, pictures of small bites, and upcoming entertainment.

The venue features live music on select nights and hosts private parties. On the third Tuesday of every month, Alisha, in her element, o ers a reservation-only ‘Wine and Cheese Pairing’ event.

“It’s not about tasting the wine; it’s about experiencing the wine, and that’s what I try and emphasize. I love talking to people about wine, explaining where it came from, the tasting notes and what it may remind them of, and I like hearing what they think about it,” Alisha says. “When customers take that rst sip of wine, or their rst bite of food here, I really like seeing them smile and hear them say, ‘Mmmm,’ or ‘Wow, that’s so good.’”

“It’s all about making people happy through their stomachs.”

MIXING DRINKS AND FRIENDSHIPS

For Sandy Lane, happy hour is also social hour.

fter working for decades behind dozens of bars, I’m convinced that I’ve met thousands of people.

From big city famous to average Joe at the local dive, I’ve played diplomat, psychologist, and confessor. While this career has made me an expert conversationalist, working with the public has revealed my cynical nature more than I care to admit.

It’s hard to stay upbeat and smile day after day, but Sandy Lane has a reputation for keeping a genuinely positive attitude every shift. The 44-year-old tends bar at Puddle Jumpers in Tavares and has garnered a huge local following because of her sunny disposition.

“Bartending to me is a privilege and I really love people,” she says.

That became evident when she bounced out of the kitchen and hugged me like we were long lost friends.

Sandy’s rst gig is a family legend.

“When I was a little girl growing up in Kissimmee my dad loved to invite friends over to our house,” she says. “Each night his buddies would give me beer orders. I wrote them down, went to the fridge, and when I delivered the cans, they would give me 25 cents. It was easy and fun!”

She stayed in Kissimmee, and at 18, began serving beer and wine at PG’s Wings. She was in her 20s when she got a job at the Disabled Veterans of America, and at Roscoe’s, working the last two jobs for years.

In 2017, Sandy moved to Tavares with her kids Trishtian, Tetler, and

Skyrah so they could be closer to ex-husband Jack, and so that she and Jack could co-parent together.

“Even though we’re divorced, we have a close relationship,” she says. “We live just blocks from one another.”

According to Sandy, Jack likes to tease her about rescuing wayward souls.

“He always reminds me that I’ll take in any stray,” says Sandy.

While she fondly looks back on her life in Kissimmee, she says she’s content and settled now.

“The locals and I get together for bar crawls, poker runs, and sleepovers with my kids,” she says. “It’s like a big family.”

Hopefully that hug rubbed o on me.

Wollenschlaeger Orthodontics

Adults who desire healthy, bright smiles are learning that it’s never too late to improve your con dence and self-esteem by correcting gapped, crowded, or crooked teeth! Today, more and more adults are embracing the use of orthodontic appliances. Although they may seem like an adolescent rite of passage, there are many good reasons for people of any age to receive orthodontic treatment.

Did you know that 1 in 3 orthodontic patients are adults?

COMMON QUESTIONS BY ADULTS

Am I too old for orthodontic treatment? Age doesn’t matter. The key factor in determining a good candidate for treatment is the health of teeth and gums.

How long does treatment take? It depends on the complexity of the case as well as what the patient wants to achieve. A short-term touch up can be as little as several months, while comprehensive treatment could last for several years.

What’s the cost? Orthodontic specialists customize both treatments and fees. After a complimentary face-to-face consultation you can determine what type of treatment, appliance and results might work best for you. A exible payment plan, which can include dental insurances, FSAs and HSAs may be used to construct an a ordable plan.

Can I get appliances that are less noticeable? Many of today’s orthodontic treatments are designed to minimize the appearance of the appliance and better t an adult lifestyle. Keep in mind, limiting your treatment option may limit your results. Whether it is clear braces, or clear aligners, you have discreet choices to help achieve your desired result.

Will treatment t my lifestyle? Certainly! You can still sing, play an instrument, dine out, kiss and do almost anything. Some temporary adjustments may be necessary, but most patients adapt quickly.

How often are check-ups? It will depend on the treatment recommendation, but the average is once every six weeks during active treatment.

Can treatment help someone who has missing teeth? Yes! Orthodontic treatment can properly align your teeth and create the proper space for future dental procedures like veneers, crowns, implants, etc.

Does gum disease impact orthodontic treatment? It is imperative to have a periodontal (gum) check-up with either a periodontist or your general dentist to make sure that your mouth is a good candidate for treatment.

Will I experience discomfort? Treatment is more comfortable than ever, thanks to new techniques and appliances. Discomfort, if any, is short lived and can be managed with overthe-counter analgesics.

Dr. Dave and Dr. Chris Wollenschlaeger, a father-son orthodontist duo who practice in Leesburg, are devoted to the highest standards of care for patients of all ages. With an additional two-to-threeyears of specialized education beyond dental school, these doctors, along with their specialized orthodontic team can help their patients get on the path to a winning smile.

IMAGINE a healthier life

In a younger face, we typically see the heart-shape or V-shape look of youth. With age, gravity, and loss of skin elasticity, we can observe the stigmata of old age: nasolabial and marionette lines, jowl formation, and a turkey gobbler neck.

We can reestablish that heart-shaped look of youth with Face and Neck Lift with Smartlipo. This procedure combines a face and neck lift with laser liposuction along the jawline and neck using Smartlipo technology. With today’s modern technology, you can truly look on the outside the way you feel on the inside. Call for your free consultation with Dr. Serra to find out if Neck Lift with Smartlipo is right for A New You!

HEALTH

bright new era of medical care in Central Florida began on June 26 when Orlando Health Medical Group FHV Health began seeing patients at its Brownwood location in Wildwood.

As Orlando Health’s first medical office in the west region of the Villages, the Brownwood location is bringing the best of the best to patients in this area.

The new office is a welcome solution for patients who previously had to travel farther for the wide variety of services offered.

A July 26th ribbon cutting marked the official launch of the 10,000-squarefoot facility, which features 12 exam rooms, a procedure room and five pre-/post-recovery rooms.

Preventative care is a priority for Dr. Minello, who is board certified in internal medicine.

Whether someone is dealing with a primary care issue, an acute illness, a chronic condition or simply wants to stay as healthy as possible, the right practice and physicians make this goal easier to accomplish.

“I’m really trying to treat people in a mind, body and spirit approach. You can’t have overall wellbeing and health if all these areas are not taken care of,” says Dr. Minello.

“We’re working hard for the patients and the community in general. We want to become their go-to destination for health care,” he adds.

Dr. Minello explains that current studies have shown that for every hour of clinical time spent with a patient, the provider spends another one to two hours doing electronic medical work.

He and his wife, Satisha, are the parents of Leonardo, and are eagerly anticipating the birth of their second child later this summer.

“I take time to get refreshed and rejuvenated with my family when I’m off work, so when I’m seeing patients they have my undivided attention,” says Dr. Minello.

Orlando Health Medical Group FHV Health is currently accepting new patients at the Brownwood office.

Christopher Minello, DO, FACOI, is the permanent primary care physician located at Brownwood. Orlando Health cardiologists and vascular surgeons also rotate into the office throughout the week for patient care.

“I like to take an active listening approach and do some of that work while the patient is here with me. I can get a very accurate background while I’m face to face with that individual. Each patient is the center of my focus while they’re here,” he says.

Originally from northeast Pennsylvania, Dr. Minello attended medical school in Philadelphia, and relocated to central Florida to take his current position with Orlando Health.

Family in All the Ways that Matter Homecoming of the heart.

ive long enough and you’ll realize life can surprise you--sometimes in the most rewarding ways.

For Florida native Debby Childers, owner of Debby’s Hair Loft in Coleman, that surprise was discovering the biological family she never knew until 2018.

At the age of 10 months, Debby was adopted from the Florida Children’s Home in Tampa by Richard and Kathryn Childers of Sumter County.

Growing up with older brothers Doug and Steve, Debby was raised in a loving family with strong Southern roots. She developed an entrepreneurial spirt and robust work ethic from her adoptive parents who owned Childers Grocery in Coleman.

Debby’s parents never hid the fact that she was adopted, emphasizing that this meant she was loved even more because they

“I was about 6 when my mom told me I was adopted and at age 11, they encouraged me to look into my heritage, but I wasn’t interested then,” recalls Debby, who was busy with school, friends and working summers in the elds.

“I was always creative with music, art and working with my hands,” says Debby, who was 19 when she enrolled in barber college in Orlando, which included both cosmetology and barbering.

After graduating in 1986, she knew she’d found her career. She worked in other salons after barber college for a few years before establishing her own business. She has owned Debby’s Hair Loft in Coleman since 1994.

“We’ve been in the same location the whole time. The building was an old cabinet shop painted Pepto-Bismol pink when I bought it,” she laughs.

Debby had long suspected she had Hispanic bloodlines. Intrigued to learn more, she nally sent her DNA to ancestry.com in the summer of 2018.

To her amazement, she discovered she has family here in Central Florida. Her biological father is Adel Sanchez, a Cuban American who was born in Ybor City, played at the Columbia Restaurant there, graduated from Julliard and played rst trumpet for the Washington National Orchestra at the Kennedy Center for 42 years.

“My daddy died in 1995 and my mama in 2016, so they never knew I found my biological dad, but my brothers have met him,” says Debby, happily.

For this mother of three, the discovery of her unexpected family was profoundly satisfying. In many ways, it also underscores the sense of family and belonging she’s long nurtured at Debby’s Hair Loft.

In 2021, Debby added on to her business’ original structure, expanding from a ve-chair salon to a 10-chair salon.

With its cozy, welcoming atmosphere and modern farmhouse décor, Debby’s Hair Loft is a full-service salon that feels a bit like a modern day “Steel Magnolias.” The framed black-and-white images of Coleman’s early days enhance the sense of history and the hospitable feeling clients immediately sense as they walk through the doors.

Debby was a facilitator for Redken for 12 years, which had her traveling all over the state and beyond Florida teaching and educating in salons and cosmetology schools.

“I typically did this on weekends, and now that I have four grandkids, I don’t want to travel on weekends,” she smiles.

But her passion for learning and educating remains.

“Continuing education has been a big part of my career and it’s that way for my sta , too,” says Debby. “We have a strong work ethic, and our core value system is very similar.”

Every month about 800 clients of all ages come through Debby’s Hair Loft.

“Making people feel better and doing something creative for them with their hair is the best part of what I do,” she says. “And honestly, I’m so excited to be able to provide a good living for my sta . It’s so rewarding for me.”

Suddenly, Debby’s lifelong creativity, love of music and art all made sense.

She’d been named Deborah Adel after her father, but her middle name was changed to Angela after the Childers adopted her.

Within months of the ancestry.com revelations, Debby was visiting her biological dad in Washington D.C. and also connecting with her extended family here in Florida.

The salon has 13 employees, counting Debby, who is still “behind the chair.” Thanks to her barbering background, 40% of her clients are male.

“I love my sta . They have a great skill set and some of them have been with me a long time, including one stylist/nail tech who’s been with me 27 years. They’re a good group; I’m so blessed to have them,” says Debby.

“Our shop is family-oriented and very hospitable. We have a kitchen and eat together whenever we can,” she adds.

She might not be playing an instrument, but for Debby

doing hair is really making her own music.

Childers, Debby’s Hair Loft is located at 114 S Commercial St. in Coleman. For more information, call 352.748.3844 or visit debbyshairloft.com.

COMMENTARY

Just call me Jan

Stuck in the middle with ... me.

oor Jan Brady, the consummate middle child in the popular sitcom

“The Brady Bunch.” Jan could never match the achieving older sister, Marcia. And she lacked the cuteness of her younger sister, Cindy, a blonde with

standpoint, I can relate to Jan’s frustration. I am a member of Generation X, sandwiched between the counterculture-creating baby boomers and the technologically

would be the Forgotten Generation.

Several years ago, CBS News posted an infographic outlining generations by birth year. Not surprisingly,

list. If that’s not bad enough, my generation spans a meager 11 years (those born between 1965 and 1976), according to the Center for Generational Kinetics. Meanwhile, baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) and millennials (born between 1977 and 1995) both span 18 years.

It’s not particularly fun being stuck between two much larger and louder cohorts. That said, I’m going to introduce you to Generation X in case you are unaware we exist.

• As youngsters, we witnessed MTV become a cultural force. Yes, my generation wanted our MTV. We saw Michael Jackson perform spooky dance moves in the video “Thriller” and watched

Beavis and Butthead laugh hysterically in sex education class.

• We jammed to music with our state-of-the-art boomboxes. At the time, it seemed technologically advanced to have a switch that selected AM, FM, or cassette.

• Our version of Xbox and PlayStation was called Atari. The graphics sucked, but that didn’t make Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, or Frogger any less exciting to play.

• As we poured milk into our Mr. T. cereal, we looked at the carton and stared onto the face of a missing child. I know the goal was to protect kids, but that scared me.

• We eagerly showed up at now-defunct video stores whenever popular movies were released and adhered to the Golden Rule: “Be kind. Rewind.” If video killed the radio star, then digital killed the video store.

• A new phenomenon known as the Internet became a part of daily life as we reached adulthood. We could nally send mail without paying postage. There even was a computerized voice that told us, “You’ve got mail.”

Hope you enjoyed that small glimpse into my generation.

Fellow Gen X’ers, let’s try not to su er from Jan Brady syndrome. We’re not considered as accomplished and groovy as Marcia (baby boomer) or as precious and adorable as Cindy (millennial), but much like the Bradys, we’re all part of one large, blended, and imperfect family.

Let’s embrace our role in that family even if it comes without much recognition. After all, we’re becoming too old to scream “Marcia! Marcia! Marcia!” from the top of our lungs.

Hey, readers! Is there a particular subject that you would like me to write a commentary about? Tell me, via email, at james@akersmediagroup.com.
