ey everyone, It’s that time of the year again when we’re all fueled by the energy of new beginnings and the buzz of what’s to come. If you’re anything like me, you kicked o 2024 determined to tackle new challenges, chase down big dreams and make this year one for the books.

Now that we are halfway through '24, we’ve hit a few bumps in the road (hello political dramas, soaring interest rates and that never-ending in ation saga), but that’s not slowing us down — especially not here in Lake and Sumter Counties.

Dive into this month’s edition to catch a glimpse of a community that’s literally buzzing with creativity and entrepreneurial air. It’s as if the word obstacle doesn’t exist in our dictionary.

Take, for instance, our 2024 Man of the Year, Dr. Isaac Deas. Now here’s someone who embodies what it means to lead with gusto and grab opportunities by the horns, alongside other

inspiring leaders making waves as CEOs, business owners and even political gures. They didn’t just face the music; they danced through it. We’re tipping our hats to you!

Our corner of the world is teeming with excitement, and I couldn’t be more honored to share these stories with you through Style magazine. It’s a privilege to spotlight such an incredible community every month.

Oh, and a massive thank you to our advertisers. Style magazine could not exist without support from our wonderful advertisers. Yes, everything we do is made possible by them. With all that said, we hope you enjoy our June issue. And remember, if you have any amazing stories you would like to share with the community, feel free to email us at editorial@akersmediagroup.com. We would love to hear your ideas.

More than 1,000 cardio drummers who assembled The Villages Polo Club to engage in nine consecutive minutes of intense drumming are awaiting con rmation from Guinness World Records that they were the largest group to accomplish this task. A MIDSUMMER

DREAM: Mark your calendar for the longest day of the year!

Summer solstice returns on Thursday, June 20 at 4:50pm. Famous events around the Northern Hemisphere on this day include:

• Solstice Bonfires in Austria

• Sunrise at Stonehenge, Wiltshire, England

• Midsommar in Scandinavia

• Midnight Sun FestivalFairbanks, Alaska

• Mayan Solstice in Guatemala

• Astrofest in Croatia

• Simmer Dim in Scotland

• Ivan Kupala in Russia

BEER HERE: Florida’s liquor laws can be confusing. Some regulations are statewide, but counties and smaller municipalities can also enact ordinances regulating alcohol. So if you work nights in Clermont, live in Sumterville and want to buy a six-pack on your way home, check your watch. Lake County sells beer and wine until 2am, but you can only buy in Sumter County

DADDY DEAREST: A recent PEW Research Center study shows that 18% of all households have a stay-at-home dad who works as the main caregiver of the children and also manages the daily chores. The No. 1 factor for this trend has to do with changes in economic conditions for families. According to the study in 2022, women make up 35% of the top 10 highest-paying professions. The second reason is that social dynamics and stigmas have changed. In this modern world, many men want to play a larger role in the upbringing of their o spring and are more than happy to embrace this lifestyle.

• Director of the People Helpers Counseling Center of First Baptist Church, Leesburg

• Served for 10 years as an online missionary with global media outreach as leader of the domestic violence online community

The People Helpers Counseling Center: has been serving the community for 20 years with free one-on-one counseling as well as currently o ering evening classes and support groups. In the last three years, we have grown from being a small service to now serving about 200 clients with the prospects of continued growth.

This service is needed because: In the U.S. we have a mental health crisis. In 2023, there were over 50,000 American suicides. Our communities are lled with broken people who have no place to turn. We are a lighthouse giving people individual counselors to listen compassionately, make suggestions and guide them to comfort, peace, purpose and restoration.

Issues we help with: We counsel many types of issues – marriage restoration, anger management, anxiety, depression, family relationship issues, abuse, losses of

many kinds, grief and more. Our clients come from all walks of life, from millionaires to homeless, ages 5 to 95.

Because I have the amazing opportunity to o er hope to those who are hurting in our community. I desire to prevent many more suicides and help people move on with new purpose, new joy, new peace for the rest of their lives. I hope to make our community a safer place by alleviating inner-chaos. I hope to share how a personal relationship with Jesus Christ will change their life and give them inside strength for each new day of life adventure.

I want everyone to know: That I am extremely passionate about helping the brokenhearted, depressed, anxious and angry of our community to nd a better way to live.

A saying I live by: “Praise be to the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”

My life has taught me: That our losses and di culties in life give us the empathy we need to bring hope to others. Nothing is wasted. God works miracles to create good out of evil.

Survivorship? What is

he National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship says you are a cancer survivor from your day of diagnosis through the rest of your life. Not everyone identifies personally with the term “survivor,” but the concept of survivorship is far-ranging and inclusive.

Survivorship

 includes both physical and mental health.

 applies not just to patients, but also to families and caregivers.

Survivorship care

 addresses the entire cancer community at all levels of support.

 begins on the day of diagnosis and applies to the rest of one’s life.

RBOI’s support programs and services are designed to help you and your family from the beginning -- even before a diagnosis is made -- for as long as you need them and at no charge. Completing treatment does not mean the end of care. Our cancer navigators and social workers make sure that you can get the resources and support you need. Give us a call.

Financial Survival

Cancer is expensive, not only for treatment but for related costs like transportation, lodging, child care, home care, and respite care. Those costs can create financial hardship, which can impact survivorship, especially if one skips medication or appointments just to get by.

Resources are available at the local, regional, and national level. They include H.U.G.S. in Marion County, the Citrus Aid Cancer Foundation in Citrus County, Elder Options of North Central Florida, and more. RBOI’s social workers and cancer navigators can help you

Cancer Screening Saves Lives

Recently, researchers used computer modelling to estimate how many lives could be saved by an increase in cancer screening. The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends routine screening for lung, colorectal, cervical, and breast cancer. But among people eligible for screening, those who are up to date equal only 13% for lung cancer, 69% for colorectal cancer, 73% for cervical cancer, and 76% for breast cancer.

What happens when screening is increased by 10% across the board? Computer modelling showed that lung, colorectal, cervical, and breast cancer deaths would decrease by 1%, 21%, 40%, and 4%, respectively. That translates into a total of 15,580 lives saved.

The researchers point out that risks (like false positives) would also increase. People and their doctors should therefore weigh those risks against the benefits of screening.

“By definition, a model can’t perfectly reflect reality,” says the study’s lead author, Amy Knudsen, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital, “but a well-validated model can shed light on potential pathways for improvements in outcomes. We think our models can do just that.”

Unsure about whether to get screened? Give us a call. RBOI’s cancer navigators and social workers can connect you, at no charge to you or your insurer, with the resources you need.

RAY HOPE of

With firsthand understanding of addiction's struggles, Dr. Isaac Deas commits his life to helping others.

MAN OF THE YEAR 2024 028 / LAKEANDSUMTER STYLE .COM JUNE'24
STORY: ROXANNE BROWN ≈ PHOTOS: NICOLE HAMEL

I had it all; everything anyone would want.

Isaac Deas’s story is one of resilience and redemption, a testament to the power of faith, determination and the human spirit.

Born into a loving, two-parent family, Isaac was raised with a strong emphasis on education and personal responsibility. His parents, married for 57 years until his father's passing, instilled in him the values of hard work and integrity.

Despite that solid foundation, Isaac found himself entangled in a life of addiction. His downfall, however, was the start of something greater than himself. Today, Isaac is a beloved pastor and renowned licensed mental health counselor who helps others with heart and understanding that transcends barriers.

The Early Years of Success

Raised in West Haven, Connecticut in a supportive, church-going family who stressed education as a crucial part of life, Isaac was a success by any measure. He earned multiple degrees, including a bachelor’s in education from Columbia University and master’s degrees in public administration, Christian counseling and education. He was also working on his doctorate in education.

Isaac had a respected job in the juvenile justice system making $100,000 a year and was living in a beautiful new home with his wife and family. His probation o ce was top in the state in terms of production.

“I had it all; everything anyone would want,” Isaac says.

Despite his success, curiosity led him down a dangerous path. His

decision to try crack cocaine as an experiment quickly spiraled out of control. What began as a once-aweek indulgence turned into a daily habit. When his drug use started to a ect his work, he couldn't admit he was using, and instead claimed he had an alcohol problem. That led to a 30-day rehab program. He relapsed within two weeks.

Hitting Rock Bottom

Isaac’s descent into addiction began during his 19-year tenure as a probation o cer and the rst black supervisor in the State of Connecticut’s Probation Department. "I got mixed up with drugs and absolutely lost everything," he recalls. "My home, my kids—everything to the point of being homeless. At that low, low point, even his parents' o er of refuge seemed unattainable.

MAN OF THE YEAR 2024 JUNE'24 LAKEANDSUMTER STYLE .COM / 029
God gave me a gift. After I got through my drug treatment program and gave my life back to the Lord, it made me more sensitive about what some young people are going through.

“The drugs had me so consumed, I could not stay o long enough to even go home. I witnessed a lot of horrible things, and I was sleeping in the snow and rain,” says Isaac, explaining that today, those experiences serve as a teaching tool. “There are very few people I see who can say I do not understand their situation, but even so, I tell people they can use me as an example. I don’t hide my background.

Transformation

Isaac's life continued to unravel as he underwent multiple stints in rehab and spent time in jail. He lost his job, his home and his family.

He sold his daughter's belongings to buy drugs and lived on the streets of New York, surrounded by others trapped in the same destructive cycle. His addiction stripped away everything.

In November 1988, Isaac reached out to his mother, who had been waiting for his call. This led him to enter a Christian drug treatment program in Wildwood then known as Youth Challenge (now House of Hope). There, Isaac nally began his journey to recovery.

"When I came to Florida for drug treatment, I weighed 85 pounds," Isaac says.

He was also emotionally emaciated.

There, Isaac experienced a profound spiritual awakening. He recalls a moment of clarity and divine intervention that marked the turning point in his recovery. This spiritual experience, coupled with the unwavering support of his praying mother, played a crucial role in his complete recovery.

Isaac completed the 18-month program and extended his stay to 22 months by continually on as a

MAN OF TH E YEAR 2024 030 / LAKEANDSUMTER STYLE .COM JUNE'24

You represent a person to me,’" he emphasizes. "I do counseling because I want to, not because I have to."

Compassionate Counseling

Isaac's counseling approach is holistic, integrating mental health support with spiritual guidance. He addresses a wide range of issues, from drug addiction and mental health to women's empowerment, youth and family issues. "With youth counseling, if the parents aren't involved, then I'm not going to see their child because they may undo what I do. They have to commit to being involved."

He also acknowledges the signi cant societal challenges his clients face, particularly the breakdown of family structures. "A lot of younger folks are unhappy with their parents because they feel the parents aren't truthful with them," Isaac says. "They see their parents smoking or drinking and then telling them they can't do the same. There’s a lot of dynamics going on."

“Another problem is that nowadays, these young people I'm working with, they're making more money selling drugs than people working 9 to 5 legitimately.”

The well-being of families is one of Isaac's primary passions. "The breakdown of families in our communities and our society is something I’m pretty passionate about," he says. "The lack of communication, the negative examples that have been set for our children, the role models they're picking out for themselves."

Isaac's work extends beyond individual counseling to broader community initiatives. He often purchases uniforms for needy student athletes and collaborates with organizations like Joe Ziler’s Mike Endowments, which funds counseling for those who can’t a ord sessions. He also works with Rob Spering, who provides clothing and other necessities to disadvantaged individuals.

Divine Realization

Isaac's recovery was not just about overcoming addiction; it was a spiritual awakening.

"God gave me a gift. After I got through my drug treatment program and gave my life back to the Lord, it made me more sensitive about what some young people are going through," he says.

Newfound faith and sensitivity became the cornerstone of his mission. Isaac committed himself to helping others avoid the pitfalls he had encountered. "I don't judge people," he explains. "I try to build them up. I try to nd something good in them and say, 'Let's work on this,’ and maybe that negative behavior will dissipate.”

He also realizes how important it is to bring God back into the mix, both personally and as a community. “I don't want to sound preachy and all that kind of good stu , but in my heart of hearts,

I truly believe we have to bring God back in the mix of our lives and let him take control," he says. "What he'll do for one, he'll do for another, and I always remind my clients that God loves us."

“People think, ‘Oh, I've disappointed God and he doesn't love me the way he does others who’ve done better, but it’s not like that. He doesn’t always like our behaviors, but he always loves us.”

Passing the Baton of Hope

For Isaac, success is measured, not in nancial terms, but in the lives he touches and transforms.

"If I can change just one life, I feel like I've done my job," he says. "None of us are perfect but you can really learn from your mistakes and then move on."

Realizing that people can also learn from his mistakes moved Isaac to author “Don’t Let Go,” which o ers inspiration and guidance to those facing similar struggles. Isaac says some of the book’s chapters, per his request, were even written by various people in his life to show how his choices a ected their lives, as well. “Don’t Let Go” is available for purchase on Amazon.

Isaac says he is not shy about sharing his story to help someone realize that no matter how far they have fallen, with the right support, determination and faith, it is always possible to rise again.

“We never know what God’s plan is for our lives and that’s why I say, ‘To God be the Glory.’ Isaiah 55, verses 8 and 9, say: “My ways are not your ways, nor are my thoughts your thoughts. But as high as the heavens and the earth are above you, so are my ways and thoughts above you.”

Isaac is thankful God was in the picture throughout his life.

“I thought I was lost, but God had a whole di erent plan.”

SAVAGE ROOFING

After witnessing the shenanigans and outright fraud in the Florida roofing industry, Patrick Scheidler decided to start his own roofing company to bring some sense of integrity and honesty to the saturated market.

“We don’t want to scam people with unnecessary jobs and insurance claims that have a negative impact on the economy,” says Patrick. “It’s not good for the housing market, not good for the insurance industry and certainly not good for the home-owner and since I am also a home-owner, it’s important to me.”

Savage Roofing started out a year ago out of desperation because Patrick was fired from another roofing company and decided to take the leap into entrepreneurship.

“I really wasn’t in a position to start a company because I’m a single dad raising my son and getting a license is a difficult process,” he says.

Patrick set out to pioneer a new way of doing things so with 20 years of experience, $3000 and retail roofing as his primary mission, he has done just that. Fast forward one year and Savage Roofing has booked and

completed hundreds of successful roofing projects and become one of the fastestgrowing companies in Central Florida.

Savage Roofing’s General Manager Jeremy Atkinson, a lifelong friend of Patrick’s, was skeptical about joining at first.

“I knew about the industry’s reputation and wanted no part of it until I sat down with Patrick,” says Jeremy. “The first week, I sold seven roofs and now a year in, the business has quadrupled because of the way that Patrick is doing things.”

Patrick is adamant about building Savage Roofing with integrity and old school values. He says that educating the homeowner is a source of pride with each employee.

“I treat my team like family,” he says. “This is why they stay loyal and want to make the company a success, plus they know how I want things done.”

As for the future, Patrick is in it for the long-haul.

“I’m trying to build a generational company by including my employee’s families and kids,” he says. “I also think it’s important for my son to see that, which is my biggest motivator.”

Don’t let the suit fool you. Keith Truenow has been a farmer all his life. He grew up in a farm family, worked for a local farm while in high school and after returning from active duty in the Air Force, and eventually established his own agribusiness which he ran for 20 years.

“I have a passion for agriculture, partly because it is the only industry where you can watch something grow and know everything about its development is in direct relationship to what you do.”

Through that passion, Keith has worked in several capacities as an advocate for the industry. He is a member of the Turfgrass Producers of Florida, Lake County Farm

Bureau and Lake County Fair Association. He was also a member of the Harris Chain of Lakes Restoration Council, appointed by then-Governor, Rick Scott.

Keith was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2020 where he works on issues that affect farmers throughout the state. Keith was part of a committee drafting best management practices for turf grass, and he works on stormwater, fertilizer and other regulations affecting Florida farmers.

“I’m proud to advocate for farmers throughout the state of Florida. Agriculture is still a viable part of Florida’s heritage and our needs for the future.”

NGUYEN HIEP

Dr. Hiep Nugyen grew up in South Vietnam as the son of a military commander and surgeon, so at a young age he was exposed to the inner-workings of the Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (or MASH units) and realized his destiny early-on.

“I used to sneak into the medical tents to study what the Americans were doing,” says the UF Health cardiothoracic surgeon. “I was so fascinated with their surgical techniques that I was inspired to become a surgeon, I just didn’t know what kind back then.”

Dr. Nguyen moved to U.S. in 1977, graduated from Houston’s Rice University in 1981 then finished medical school at the University of Texas. In 1995, he completed his Cardiothoracic surgery residency at New York University then moved to Delaware to start his decades-long surgical practice. Along the way, he earned multiple fellowships, published numerous papers and began his lifelong passion for volunteerism

and humanitarian causes, especially in Vietnam.

“Volunteering is so important to me because you see the lives that you change and camaraderie that happens with each project,” he says. “It’s very rewarding and humbling.”

He has also dedicated his life to patient care, education and medical progress. Luckily, he chose Central Florida for its warm weather, professional opportunities and multi-culturalism.

“The key is to approach health, wellness and recovery from different points of view, so understanding different cultures in the community helps me with my patients,” says Dr. Nguyen, adding that most recently, he joined UF Health Central Florida where he will serve as medical director of cardiovascular services and lead the open-heart surgery program. In turn, UF Health Central Florida is honored to have the renowned cardiothoracic surgeon on board to further their initiative

of advancing cardiovascular care in Lake and Sumter Counties. A pioneer in his field, Dr. Nguyen is the first and only heart surgeon to offer several leading-edge procedures in the area, including minimally invasive robotic heart surgery and aortic grafting.

While every procedure is quite technical, the human aspect of each surgery is very important to Dr. Nguyen.

“Surgery is only part of the process,” he says. “Cardiovascular disease is a lifelong process so healthy living and treating the illness as a whole is imperative because once a patient gets to me, it may have gone too far.”

In the long run, Dr. Nguyen believes it’s better for our society to encourage a healthy lifestyle, even if it means he would be out of a job.

“If I didn’t have to do one more surgery so people could live a full life with their family, I would be a happy guy.”

Benjamin’s work ethic has led him to success as a business owner. It’s that

work ethic that Benjamin looks for in his team members.

“I can always teach them about pest control, but it is important our technicians have the discipline to show up and the desire to do a good job for our customers.”

BOB TUCKER

Bob Tucker started in the craft and floral industry in 1979 and in 2004, he opened Miss Daisy’s Flowers and Gifts on W. Main Street in downtown Leesburg. Seven years later, the “events” part came when a floral client asked him to plan an entire party. The rest is legendary.

“I realized early-on that people are professionals in their own right and don’t have the time or the experience to plan an event themselves,” he says,” so they rely on us.”

Events by Miss Daisy has planned, created, arranged, and carried-out hundreds of events over the last 13 years throughout Lake and Sumter counties. These professionally developed gatherings include weddings, baby showers, anniversaries, birthdays, retirements, company parties and more.

“We want the client to experience a seamless party where everything comes together from the initial planning to the clean-up,” Bob says.

After all the hard work, Bob usually experiences a bit of his own pride and joy.

“With every event, my clients start out as clients, and in many cases, those clients become lifelong friends.”

CRAIG CHANDLER

Craig Chandler’s successful career in finance started in wholesaling investments and annuities to financial advisors across the country. He moved into retail and eventually opened his own wealth management firm because he wanted to give clients a different level of service.

“When I saw the emphasis many financial advisors placed on their commissions, I decided to become an advisor who cared more about the client, as it should be,” Craig explains. Chandler Wealth Management is transparent with clients about how their money is invested and how those investments are performing. They are fiduciaries who specialize in providing strategies and guidance for those who are seeking a better lifestyle in retirement. Along the way, they educate clients about the best wealth management strategies for their individual needs.

“Retirement investing is about more than just matching your risk tolerance to the investments,” Craig explains. “As market conditions shift, you have to reassess your portfolio and make adjustments to be sure your money is working as hard as you are to reach retirement.”

“When you reach retirement, your investing strategy changes from investing and saving to protecting and distributing,” Craig explains. “You still need growth in retirement, but you can’t take any big risks because you won’t have time to make up for a loss.”

Craig works with clients to prepare for retirement, mapping out long term goals and

adjusting the strategy for major life events. He also focuses on educating retirees about their investments and how they can protect their principle and generate income they can’t outlive.

“Part of my job is to educate clients. Every retiree should know what’s in their portfolio and understand the individual strategy that works for them.”

In addition to retirement planning, Chandler Wealth offers estate planning, insurance reviews and all the services and solutions a client might need to reduce risk, before and during retirement.

“We take our role as fiduciaries very seriously,” Craig explains. “We’re here to guide our clients to and through retirement, looking out for their best interests, from investments to estate planning.”

An effective estate plan helps you manage your affairs during your lifetime and controls the distribution of your assets after death. It also can spell out your healthcare wishes and designate someone to manage your finances if you become unable to do so.

“Estate planning is an important part of the ongoing financial planning process, which is why we offer the service, along with tax planning and insurance products,” Craig adds.

“We have all the resources to take care of our clients’ financial management.”

Chandler Wealth has expanded to six offices in three states to meet the financial management needs for more people planning for and enjoying retirement.

Isaac

Rev. Dr. Isaac Deas, a pastor, licensed mental health counselor and founder of Deas Consulting in Tavares, is dedicated to guiding individuals through life’s challenges. He offers counseling services addressing a spectrum of issues, from individual, group and marriage counseling to anger management and substance abuse, catering to people of all ages. However, Deas’s current focal point is about empowering women.

With a genuine concern for women’s wellbeing, Deas is committed to helping them reclaim their self-worth and break free from oppressive circumstances. He observes that many women silently endure abusive relationships or settle for less than they deserve due to financial constraints or societal pressure. Recognizing the ripple effects of such situations on families, Deas emphasizes

the importance of fostering healthy environments where children can thrive.

“I think sometimes women have forgotten who they are. They allow themselves to be treated in a way other than how a queen should be treated,” Isaac says. “One of my missions is to remind them that women are the gift. It’s not us men. We have deluded ourselves into thinking that we’re the gift, but we’re not.”

Deas’s dedication to women’s empowerment extends beyond individual counseling sessions. He hosts a monthly women’s group on the last Monday of every month and an annual women’s conference, slated for August 17 this year.

“The conference includes breakfast, lunch and the program. It’s a morning of empowering and reminding women how special they are,” Isaac says.

GODWIN JUSTIN

Meet Justin Godwin, the visionary force behind Roam Electric, a name synonymous with electrical excellence in Ocala. Born into a lineage of electricians, Justin's journey was seemingly predetermined. Growing up, he worked for a large electrical contracting company his dad co-founded.

Despite initial hesitations, Justin's trajectory solidified with guidance from a friend: "Do what you're good at until you can afford to do what

you want." Overcoming personal obstacles, including a courageous battle with testicular cancer, Justin embraced his destiny, obtaining his license in 2016 and founding his own company in 2018, though coming up with a business name and logo is a whole other story.

Justin says one day after throwing on a shirt adorned with a buffalo and the word ‘roam’ on it, he thought, “That’s me.”

“The buffalo is an iconic American symbol to me and the

definition of ‘roam’ is to go from place to place with a purpose. Being service driven and getting out there was my main goal, so it was fitting,” Justin adds.

Today, the services Roam Electric offers range from navigating insurance assessments and installing receptacle switches and dimmers to engineering lighting layouts for equestrian facilities, arenas and anything electrical in between.

“I am committed to being there for customers, providing whatever services they need directly and with a personal touch,” he says.

Some people inherit a farm, a law firm or construction company. For Michael Huey, inheriting Two Old Hags Wine Shoppe from his mom Joyce has been a source of pride and a way to reconnect with his home town of Leesburg.

“It’s been a constant learning experience,” says the 28-year-old. “My mom always taught me to respect people’s opinions and treat others kindly which I think is a crucial key to success.”

Joyce still pops in from time to time, but Michael runs the day-to-day business focusing on both the retail and the bar side.

“I try to accommodate our retail customers by locating rare and hard to find wine,” Michael says, “I may just get a photo of a label from them but I treat it like a fun treasure hunt and do whatever it takes to find the bottle and ultimately the case.”

When the afternoon hits, Michael gets to enjoy his products with friends, both old and new.

“I love the bar part of the business,” he says. “We meet people from all over the world and to share a bottle of wine brings everyone together and equalizes everybody’s experiences.”

IN NOVEMBER, MICHAEL WILL BE ON THE BALLOT FOR LEESBURG CITY COMMISSIONER, DISTRICT #3.

JAMES H.

“Success is being able to take care of a lot of people and improve their quality of life,” Dr. Rogers says. That’s exactly what he’s been doing at Ocala Plastic Surgery & Dermatology for the last 33 years.

One of the most experienced plastic surgeons in Central Florida, Dr. Rogers chose his specialty because of the versatility of the skills required. Plastic surgeons work all around the body and in some cases need to find creative solutions.

Practicing in Ocala for so long allows Dr. Rogers to see the long-term effects of his work. He reconstructed the nose on a 13-yearold girl after a terrible accident, and now she is an adult with her own children still living in the community. Every year she praises him on social media for changing her life with that operation.

Dr. Rogers who has one adult son and four girls ages four, six, 14 and 16, says, “Ocala is a wonderful place to build a practice and raise children.” He considers the personal aspect of his success as “dealing with that every day, having fun and still making it to work.”

One of the most sought out plastic surgeons in Central Florida, Dr. Nijher is at the top of his field, performing many revision surgeries for patients from as far away as Massachusetts.

“Historically, people think of plastic surgery as a vanity procedure,” Dr. Nijher says. “But it’s more than that.” A face lift can restore joy and confidence to a woman who is getting older. Plastic surgery can be used to remove excess skin after extreme weight loss, helping patients achieve their final goal. Dr. Nijher also takes calls from the hospital to work on facial trauma patients.

Dr. Nijher enjoys plastic surgery because he gets to see the results of his work, and what he does helps rebuild people’s lives after accidents, illnesses or the ravages of time. “When plastic surgery is done right, it is life-changing,” he adds.

Community involvement is also very important to Dr. Nijher who considers his life here in Central Florida the American Dream. In addition to developing a successful practice in Ocala, and raising his kids here, he remains engaged with the community on various sports teams and booster clubs.

“Success is doing a job I love and having the flexibility to do other stuff in my life, too.”

Aftershock CLEAN TEAM

Aftershock, founded by Nicole Thornton and her late husband, Jeff, is more than just a restoration company. It's a testament to teamwork, equality, and unwavering dedication to customer satisfaction.

Located in Lake County and also servicing Marion and Sumter counties as well, Aftershock specializes in water, fire, and mold remediation, offering round-the-clock emergency services to homeowners in need.

From an operational standpoint, Aftershock is committed to putting the homeowner first by working towards a goal on every loss to make sure homeowners are

taken care of. This commitment extends to shouldering the loss if an insurance claim if denied, relieving homeowners of financial burdens in their time of crisis.

Additionally, employees, including Damon Bennett, Scott Boyd, Lance Long, and Gary Mead, stress the absence of traditional job titles. Instead, they work as a cohesive team, each member equally valued and compensated. "We all work as a team and we don't really have job titles," Damon explains. "We want the company to be successful, and we all hold equal shares in that success."

The company's success speaks volumes. Despite being relatively young, Aftershock has surpassed industry standards, breaking $2 million in revenue with fewer employees than most competitors.

Their dedication to excellence is matched only by their commitment to professionalism.

"Nobody brings their personal problems to work with them or shows any frustration after a long day," Gary says. "Instead, we leave our problems at home and focus on providing top-notch service to our homeowners."

JESSE FOLKER

After 25 years in the custom pool industry, Jesse Folker started Premier Pool Contractor in 2017 because he believed with his experience and know-how, he could streamline the pool building process. He quickly realized that his process could enhance the pool building experience for his clients and change the face of pool building locally.

“What we found during Covid was that most companies could take a year or two to complete a job and I knew that it didn’t have to take that long,” he says. “We made the process more efficient.”

Premier Pool Contractor can build custom pools, rock waterfalls, or complete remodels, all while meeting

deadlines with integrity and premium workmanship, due to highly skilled employees and close relationships with local subcontractors.

Jesse also explains that the experience with the customer is just as important as the finished product. “Construction projects can be overwhelming,” he says. “We are always there if they have any questions or concerns or just want to chat about the process and that gives our clients a very pleasant experience.”

“Some people say that you’re either very lucky, or very good. I think I’m both,” says Quan. “My motivation is to wake up every day and put my family first because life is so short.”

Along with his wife Tiffany and their three kids Ty-Bryant, 17, Alexis, 12, and Ronin, 8,

Stavros celebrates of satisfied diners.

tavros Kountanis and wife Amanda immigrated from the Village of Mystras in Greece to Connecticut in the early 1970s. There, after he achieved culinary certi cation in Canada, they opened an Italian restaurant. But it wasn’t long before Amanda had enough of the cold weather so they decided to move to Florida.

Fifty years later, Stavros and Sons, the family-owned business they started, is ourishing in two Lake County locations. It all started in 1974 when they opened the Original Stavros Pizza House in Daytona Beach. They continued to open additional locations within the area while raising their sons, Michael and Pete, but they sold their restaurants and relocated to the Leesburg area for a change of scenery more conducive to raising a small family.

The Kountanis family shared their love of Greek food with their adopted community by opening Stavros restaurants in Leesburg, Fruitland Park and Eustis. Eventually, Stavros and Amanda sold the Leesburg restaurant. Then, in 2016, they decided to step back and entrust their sons with running the remaining two locations. Their oldest son, Pete, and his wife, Heather, took on managing Stavros and Sons in Eustis, while George and his wife, Cyndi, manage the Stavros and Sons in Fruitland Park.

While Amanda and Stavros passed down their business, they are keeping themselves busy. Amanda splits her time

between the two restaurants, helping where needed. Stavros rotates his time between the United States and tending to the family’s olive grove in Greece.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

Cyndi and George’s two kids have also helped o and on at the restaurant. Their son, Steven, works part time behind the wine bar as he nishes his degree in business at CulverStockton College and plans to join the U.S. Air Force ying ghter jets. Their daughter, Amanda, is pursuing a degree in business and ballet at Butler University in Indianapolis. Both parents are big supporters of their children living out their dreams. Maybe they’ll come back and join the family business, but Cyndi feels that they need to do the things they’re being called to do in their lives.

A true Floridian, Cyndi grew up in Wildwood, but she agrees with George that their Greek and Southern cultures have similarities. Both are very much about family, food and tradition. So when they met, those core values were aligned.

“Greek family is just warm, loving and passionate and they live really big,” Cyndi says.

George was born in Daytona Beach, however, he and Pete spent most of their childhood attending elementary school in Greece while living with family. They moved back to Florida toward the end of their middle school years and attended Leesburg High School.

Cyndi and George were 19 years old when they met through a mutual friend during a night out in Orlando while Cyndi was on Thanksgiving break from Liberty University

in Virginia. They stayed in touch and continued to talk over the phone when she went back to school. The distance didn’t deter them. The two became inseparable and three weeks later, she came home for Christmas break and never went back. This year marks 25 years that they have been married as they continue to spend all their time together between running a successful business and raising two kids.

Both have individual roles at the restaurant but still work side by side on everything. Cyndi does the bookkeeping and handles public relations and community outreach matters. George’s role is more focused on the back-of-the-house and day-today kitchen operations.

Being southern, Cyndi also loves to bake. When they rst opened in Lake County, she wanted to nd another way to contribute besides waiting tables so she started making cakes. They quickly became so popular that Stavros started o ering additional desserts provided by distributors to help with the demand. This has put less pressure

on Cyndi, who now makes about two to three cakes a week for the restaurant. And man, do they go quick.

“I feel better not having to keep up with the demand as much, because then it keeps it from feeling like a job but more like I’m doing it because I love to,” she says.

ON THE MENU

Stavros food is best described as comfort, Mediterranean Greek Italian. The menu features staple items –pizza, Greek salad and several savory pasta dishes. Five generations of family recipes contribute to how truly authentic and delicious Stavros’ food is. The pizza dough recipe has never changed since George’s grandmother Polytimi Kountanis rst made it.

If you ask Cyndi, she’ll tell you one of the best dishes on the menu is their Greek Chicken. It has artichokes, mushrooms and black olives sauteed in a marsala wine sauce tossed with chicken and served over linguine pasta.

The restaurant o ers something for everyone depending on what you’re

in the mood for. If you’re coming in with a group or family, then pizza and spaghetti or lasagna might be your go-to. If you’re on a date, then the Greek Chicken would be a great dish. And depending on how hungry you are, you can count on having leftovers with their generous portions.

And George and Cyndi are working on new Greek items to add to the menu. They are paying attention to their customer base and enjoy curating the menu based on what they know people like.

“We know our customers want super comforting, old-school Greek Italian food,” Cyndi says. “Like the same pizza I was eating from here from when I was 8 with my softball team.”

DOING BETTER FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS

The Fruitland Park location has a new addition that has enhanced the dining experience – George’s Wine Bar. The light bulb lit up in George’s mind when he recognized patrons waiting outside

to be seated. He would walk out and o er customers a drink because he felt so thankful for them being there and their willingness to wait.

“My husband saw that there was a need,” Cyndi says. “He came to me and said, ‘Honey, we’ve got to do better for our customers.’”

A classy, laidback lounge area, the wine bar gives guests the opportunity to enjoy their wait for a table. The beautiful, white marble bar top spans across the room with dark wood-stained high-top chairs lining it. The wall behind the bar is red brick layered with a 1940s-style polished, gold mirror xed in the center. On both sides of the mirror, shelves hold several varieties of wine. There are a few tall chairs around wooden barrels that have been transformed into tables. The wine bar is a quiet, relaxed space where you can enjoy a cocktail, a glass of wine or beer. You can also order from their full menu at the bar if you prefer not to wait for a table to eat. It’s quite the contrast from the dynamics of their dining room, located on the other side of the wall.

“It’s just a quieter place and it’s not such a bustling space compared to the restaurant,” Cyndi says. “Then

you go into the dining room and it’s this classic, homey-warm welcoming feeling that you get with family.”

LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE

What lies ahead for Stavros is to be determined, but one thing is certain – family and customers are always there to support them each step of the way.

George and Cyndi are working on opening a third location after purchasing family property in Wildwood from Cyndi’s grandparents. The land was zoned commercial, and the ball was slowly rolling as they tried to get things lined up for the infrastructure. Then the pandemic hit, and things came to an abrupt pause. Regardless, Cyndi attests that their business remained a oat during the time thanks to its customers.

“We are always so grateful for them,” Cyndi says. “There were so many businesses that had to close their doors, this community kept us

open during a time that we all were struggling, and we appreciate them so much for that.”

Although they had to put plans for the new location on hold, Cyndi insists that door is not closed. The couple is patiently waiting for the right time, hoping the economy will stabilize. They would love to open another location and know their guests would love it too.

As grateful as they are for their customers, they are also so thankful for their sta .

“We are such a family. We have a server who has served tables for Stavros longer than I’ve been married into this family – that’s over 25 years,” Cyndi says.

There’s something truly special about the relationship that the employees and their customers share. Sta always make it a point to connect with customers. Servers know right away what regulars will order. Cyndi enjoys being able to stop by tables just to catch up with guests about life.

Family values run deep between the Kountanis family and their customers. They have guests who they’ve attended weddings with and customers who they’ve known as kids and now they have kids of their own that are dining with them.

Whether you’ve been to Stavros before, or plan to in the future, one thing is certain – you’re going to be treated like family.

DREAMS

How one Leesburg High program is changing mindsets, shaping futures and instilling hope in Lake County youth.

he late Zig Ziglar, a nationally renowned author and motivational speaker, once said, “Your life is a result of the choices you have made. If you don’t like your life, start making better choices.”

Great concept, but it’s usually easier said than done. Just ask the countless people trying to dig themselves out of bad choices. Better yet, think of someone with their whole world still ahead of them trying to come up with the best choices for their future with little or no knowledge, guidance or support.

Leesburg High School students, however, have plenty of hope in the form of The Powerhouse Youth Project, an initiative intended to help students nd their passions and purpose.

Executive Director Scott Chevalier and dedicated community leaders involved as mentors — Scott calls them, “hope dealers” — do everything they can to ensure that participating students succeed.

“We believe every student has a passion and a purpose. They may not know it. They may not know how to identify it, verbalize it, understand it or what to do with it, but they do,” Scott says. “There’s something in every

person that says, ‘this is what I love,’ and when they nd it, life changes because they’re engaged in something they’re passionate about and that they enjoy every day. Most adults spend their life looking for their ‘why’ so we want to give these kids a head start, help build that bridge with them.”

The program is a godsend for sophomore Grace Dennison, 16, a Powerhouse student. Though skeptical, she started last September, but once she embraced the program’s purpose, it’s not only grown on her, but completely changed the course of her life.

“I was going down the wrong path and I kept getting in trouble, so they (school personnel) said this would be the best option for me,” Grace says. Little by little, she began looking forward to attending Powerhouse sessions.

“It’s changed how I see myself and it’s made me realize I can do better, that there are opportunities out there for me and that it’s not just life passing by day-by-day,” she adds. “Once I put

my trust in the program and in Mr. Scott and everybody else and got to know them better, I was like, ‘OK, I actually have people, besides my family and stu , who truly care about me and really care about what happens to me.’”

Seventeen-year-old junior Gabriela “Gaby” Santiago says she was not fully on board with the program and was simply going through the motions at rst.

Today, after two years, she understands and very much appreciates the Powerhouse mission because she’s now poised to be the rst in her immediate family to graduate high school. After that, she’s intent on opening her own nail salon, something she never even considered before Powerhouse allowed her to dream big.

“When you really take the time to listen to what they have to say to you, it really opens your eyes and you really set yourself up for something di erent; something more than you ever had before,” Gaby says.

“In the beginning, I felt like I had to act di erent just to please the trainers

and mentors, but they wanted us to come in here and be ourselves without judging us for what had happened before,” she says. “They encouraged us to focus on who we can become and what next steps they could take to help us. I realized this was something I couldn’t let pass me by and felt strongly that if I didn’t take it now, who knows when I’d have the next opportunity?”

THE POINT OF POWERHOUSE

The Powerhouse Youth Project strives to guide young individuals in discovering and pursuing their passions with a focus on three core values: that every student has a passion and purpose, that everyone needs someone in their life to achieve their purpose and that every choice will cost you something.

The process starts by connecting with students using a high-tech/ high-touch strategy to identify their strengths, personality dispositions, life mission, possible career matches and

potential obstacles to reaching their goals. Students are then springboarded into a mentorship strategy focused on career development and keeping them on track for life.

Scott says the program he’s led for two years focuses on empowering students through choice. And he reminds them that — every chance he gets — that now is the time to make positive choices.

Scott conceived Powerhouse in Nashville, Tennessee to inspire and guide at risk students in pursuing their passions. Scott soon learned how di cult that was to accomplish through one-time, 55-minute assemblies he took from school to school. The program was put on hold in 2007.

“I don’t want to show kids how great life can be without a pathway to pursue it,” Scott says. “That’s just not fair. They need to have something that’s sustainable.”

“WE BELIEVE EVERY STUDENT HAS A PASSION AND A PURPOSE. THEY MAY NOT KNOW IT. THEY MAY NOT KNOW HOW TO IDENTIFY IT, VERBALIZE IT, UNDERSTAND IT OR WHAT TO DO WITH IT, BUT THEY DO.”
—SCOTT CHEVALIER

Fast forward to 2017 after Scott and his wife moved to Clermont. During a conversation with Clermont Police O cer David Colon, Scott learned that the rate of youth crises in Clermont was alarmingly high, a fact that reignited the spark of Powerhouse in Scott’s heart. Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, the groundwork was laid for a new chapter of Powerhouse.

Once Scott learned about the realities of Leesburg High School students facing homelessness and instability, LHS emerged as a focal point for a revamped Powerhouse. When Scott met with LHS Principal Mike Randolph about bringing Powerhouse to students, Randolph’s response was a solid, “When can you start?”

Statistics underscore the gravity of the situation: Approximately one in ve students in the United States grapple with anxiety and/or depression, while 29 million children — 40% percent of youth — are deemed at risk due to various socioeconomic and environmental factors. This staggering reality reinforces the importance of programs like Powerhouse in providing support and resources for vulnerable youth.

“I believe that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their circumstances and through programs like Powerhouse, we can provide them with the support and resources they need to thrive,” Principal Randolph says.

Powerhouse strives to cultivate resilience and purpose in students, regardless of their circumstances, through mentorship, career expos and comprehensive development strategies. The mission is to inspire, educate and empower the next generation by giving them hope and something to strive for.

Nathan Jerome Shaw, Jr., a dedicated Powerhouse trainer, has witnessed the program’s profound impact. Drawing from nearly two decades of working with young people, Nathan emphasizes the importance of nurturing individual passions and purpose.

“Passion is purpose revealed,” he says. “Our youth are the nation’s greatest asset, but we don’t act like it. If this is our greatest asset, this is where we’d be investing. These kids deserve better than a system that

When you see a life change, you see a game change.”

Nathan stresses the pivotal role of creating a space where students can discover their true potential.

Powerhouse breaks barriers and instills con dence in students through engaging sessions focused on self-discovery, resilience and the power of dreaming big. Mentorship opportunities further enable students to envision bright futures.

Nathan emphasizes the importance of planting seeds of empowerment and nurturing them over time.

Questions and answers on the chalkboard in the Powerhouse classroom at LHS sum up the program perfectly. They read: “When were you born? No choice. Where were you born? No choice. Who birthed you? No choice. Why were you born? You get to choose!”

Powerhouse’s key players stress the critical need for community involvement and nancial support to sustain and expand the program’s impact.

“Our mission is simple yet profound: to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation of leaders,” Scott

says. “Together, we’re changing lives and building a brighter future for our youth.”

HOPE DEALERS

Volunteers and mentors, made up of community and business leaders, are an essential part of the Powerhouse program. They make a huge di erence in the lives of the students they’re partnered with for guidance, internship opportunities, advice and friendship.

Scott is always looking for help from adults willing to make a heartfelt commitment to be there for the students. Those community leaders already involved say the program is as rewarding for them as it is for the students.

“I see how much we’re needed in these kids. It’s very rewarding, but it’s also nice to see it actually making a di erence,” says Elliott Ward, a mentor and owner of Blue Island Sportswear in downtown Leesburg. “Some things you hear about and it’s going on

078 / LAKEANDSUMTER STYLE .COM JUNE'24

we’re making a di erence here and it can go everywhere. It’s a very exciting thing to be a part of.”

“Being a mentor at Powerhouse allows me to share my journey and inspire these young minds to dream big and chase their goals,” says Alex Garro, one of the successful business leaders who bring entrepreneurial expertise to Powerhouse.

Seeing the transformation in these kids, from disengaged to determined, is incredibly rewarding. “It’s about changing lives one person at a time and making a di erence in our world,” Alex says.

According to Kaya one of the biggest takeaways from Powerhouse is, “Something is out there that is bigger and better than anything you’ll ever know. And it’s for you.”

Senior Jasmine Benjamin, 18, says the program impacted her greatly after she fell behind on her credits for graduating. She says she may have given up hope if it weren’t for Powerhouse giving her the push she needed to refocus despite challenges.

what I’ve learned, knowing it’s not just for me but for my family’s future too,” Gaby says. “It doesn’t matter what age you are; you can change your life at any point.”

WHAT NEXT?

“Not every child has that level of village supporting them, so I wanted to do more and this program has allowed me to,” says Margaret Renaud, manager of Sta America, a recruiting company in Ocala that trains the students on career readiness. “They’re the young people that will take care of our generation, so we have to pave the way for them to be successful by giving them what they need.”

Margaret o ers tips on things like resume writing, interview and people skills, dressing and speaking professionally, leadership, con dence building and more.

“Sometimes, we’re not thinking of the world through their perspective but I try to, and I like to tell them, ‘You have to be the hero of your own story,’ and that’s where we come in. We help them tap into that personal power and encourage them to be more of who they want to be every single day,” Margaret says.

STUDENT IMPACT

Kaya Cuomo came to Powerhouse after she learned about it through friends involved in the program. Despite being relatively new, Kaya nds the program impactful, especially appreciating the sense of care and support it o ers. Re ecting on her experience, Kaya emphasizes the message that no matter the challenges one faces, there’s always something greater awaiting them.

“The rst time I came to Powerhouse, I didn’t like it, but after giving it a real chance, Mr. Scott and the others inspired me to nd a better path for myself and work hard to not fall behind again,” Jasmine says. “I have goals now and a plan for myself and I’ve started to realize that you’re going to have to take control of life, or life is going to take control of you.”

Jasmine hopes to return once she graduates.

“I’d never had what I found at Powerhouse. I didn’t feel there was much hope for me, and that de nitely made me spin out and do things that I shouldn’t have done, make choices I shouldn’t have made,” Jasmine says. “But now that I’m here, I’m so glad and blessed and thankful that I can stand up and say I’m a part of Powerhouse.

“I wake up now and be like, ‘Yeah, that’s what I want to do. I want to come back here one day, look at the kids and tell them I was once in their shoes. I want to say, ‘I was sitting exactly in the same seat you were, but that doesn’t mean anything; you have other choices. There’s hope for you.’”

Gaby also feels grateful for Powerhouse, but it doesn’t end there. Gaby’s participation not only bene ts her but also brings pride and hope to her family, especially her father, who eagerly awaits her return home from school to hear about the words of wisdom and experience Scott and other trainers o er at Powerhouse.

“My dad never nished high school and he’s always regretted it. When he learned about Powerhouse and saw the chance it o ered me, he was all in. Now, I come home excited to share

With continued dedication and community support, the Powerhouse program is growing. Scott hopes that it can make a lasting di erence in the lives of students for many years to come, ensuring that as many students as possible have the tools and opportunities to build bright futures for themselves and their communities.

Looking ahead, the vision for Powerhouse is to secure additional funding and attract more mentors to expand its reach and impact more students with the resources and support they need to thrive academically and personally. Scott says the program will soon be o ered at Umatilla High School, South Lake High School, Alee Academy and Mount Dora High School and Eustis High School, but the possibilities are endless. What if the program could somehow be sourced for homeschoolers or even young adults out of school who’ve hit a dead end?

“You only get so many days on this earth, so why not nd what you’re passionate about and nd a way to pursue it?” Scott says.

The time to do it, you guessed it . . . is now.

Kindred spirits make art with ‘ Style’.

sudden that day we ended up sitting next to each other and started talking.”

“We were doing di erent things and over the years it’s just evolved to the point where Bev and I found out we were kindred spirits,” Carleen adds.

Carleen specializes in soft pastel portraits, while Beverly focuses on collage and mixed media. Both approaches re ect their unique personalities.

Over the years, they’ve come to enjoy creating collages together — particularly using pages from our very own Lake and Sumter Style Magazine. They both love the graphic designs and vibrant photos within Style’s pages, so they search for copies each month after the magazine is published, read it together, and then tear out pages to use for their artwork.

Style Magazine has given us a lot to play with. It has become our go-to source for inspiration and materials,” Bev says. “We go through the magazines and we take pictures, words, maybe a heading or something and cut them out to use somehow. All these things give us an idea to start o with and then we just run with it.”

Bev says they then incorporate recycled materials like phone directories, road and aviation maps, tea bags, dental oss and any other things that can be recycled and glued onto their pieces to add layers of meaning and texture.

Carleen says experimentation is key to their process. For instance, they’ll paint over words or parts of pictures, tear pieces o one layer to reveal something from underlying layers and spritz the piece with alcohol, or put cellophane wrap on top of paint, to create di erent textures.

They also believe in the joy of ‘play’ in their art. In fact, they host classes where participants are encouraged to create uninhibited and expressive artwork by letting loose and creating without constraints.

“There are so many things we can do, so many techniques, but the main thing is having fun with it, because if we enjoy it, we get better results,” Bev says, explaining that she’s learned to incorporate mistakes into her artwork, which only enhances it.

“You really can do anything with it and that’s what the fun part is,” she adds. “And if you can make somebody laugh or smile, or nd some enjoyment from what you’ve created, that’s a bonus too.”

Carleen says they also get a kick out of explaining what went into a piece. She says people are usually surprised when they realize all the hidden little details in their work.

“When you say things to people like, ‘Do you realize there’s a map of New Jersey in there or an aviation chart in that tower? Or do you realize that the trunk of that tree is made from a cocktail napkin?’ People really get a kick out of it,” Bev says. “We can do all these di erent things and if you tell people where it all came from, it makes it more interesting to them because all of a sudden they can see it.”

“THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS WE CAN DO, SO MANY TECHNIQUES, BUT THE MAIN THING IS HAVING FUN WITH IT, BECAUSE IF WE ENJOY IT, WE GET BETTER RESULTS”

You can’t just tell your financial advisor you trust him or her. That’s not good enough. You have to understand what’s happening with your money.

WHO CAN YOU TRUST TO MANAGE YOUR MONEY?

When it comes to managing your nances, it is important to work with a duciary.

Fiduciary is a general term applied to someone who takes responsibility. When applied to the nancial industry, a duciary is obligated to do what is in your nancial best interest.

When you hire a nancial advisor, they should want to grow and protect your money, but not all nancial advisors prioritize your goals. Some are focused on their own bottom line rather than your safety-to-risk tolerance.

The money you have when you retire is your nal earnings and needs to be protected. It is the role of the duciary to make sure your best interest is put rst, all the time.

“Retirees are especially vulnerable to working with nancial advisors who do not have their best interests in mind,”

says Craig Chandler, founder of Chandler Wealth Management.

Someone can be a duciary and still give you the wrong advice or steer you towards investments that provide more bene t for them than you.

“When I talk to new clients about their goals and then look at their portfolios, they don’t match up,” Craig explains. “When clients say they don’t want to take any risk, but their portfolio is all in high-risk investments, I know someone wasn’t advising them properly.”

MORE THAN JUST A FIDUCIARY

You have to look for more than just a duciary to manage your money. Education and transparency are also important. Your nancial advisor should explain the strategy to you, and you need to understand why his or her recommendations are best for you.

“You can’t just tell your nancial advisor you trust him

or her. That’s not good enough. You have to understand what’s happening with your money,” Craig explains. “If the advisor can’t explain it in terms you can understand, maybe he doesn’t understand it well enough himself.”

Transparency means there’re no surprises. You should know about all the trades and transfers before they happen because they’re part of the strategy. When there is a change in the strategy, you should get a phone call and a detailed explanation.

You should feel free to ask questions, something you can’t do if you don’t understand the strategy. Don’t be afraid to get a second opinion or see if you can nd something wrong with the plan.

“No matter who manages your money, don’t just settle for what they o er,” Craig says. “You deserve to work with an advisor who is dedicated to helping you achieve your goals.”

Sean Campbell’s dedication as head basketball coach for Leesburg High’s boys’ and girls’ teams is a slam dunk.

eesburg High School’s (LHS) coaching sta was one of the busiest in Lake County this past season.

Sean Campbell, head basketball coach and his assistants worked tirelessly to lead the school’s boys’ teams to success.

Their challenge became more di cult when the girls head coach stepped down, creating an unexpected gap in leadership.

In response, Coach Campbell, who coached two state-champion Leesburg boys’ teams, made the challenging decision to coach both the boys and the girls. But he did so knowing he would have plenty of support from Assistant Coaches D’Mani Nettles, Jason Horton, Cam Smith, Derrick Campbell and Yolander Scarberry.

“I knew when I decided to take both on that it was going to be

It was also the rst time he coached girls’ basketball.

“My coaching style did not change much but the way I approached certain things had to change,” Coach Campbell said. “I also got to coach my daughter, Macey Campbell, and that was a thrill in its own right. But the biggest thrill was seeing the girls’ eyes light up with excitement when we started winning. The girls’ team went 1-24 during the 2022-’23 season. Most of these girls didn’t know what it was like to be a winning team. When they started winning games, that was one of the most rewarding feelings of my life.”

The Leesburg girls nished 24-2 in one of the biggest turnarounds in Lake County sports history.

“I am a two-time state champion and this ranks as one of the most challenging things I have ever done,”

JOURNEY FAITH AND FLAVOR

Leesburg natives push forward and open

Breakfast at Tiffany’s downtown.

STORY AND PHOTOS: CINDY PETERSON

reakfast at Ti any’s has become a downtown hit in Leesburg. No, we’re not talking the 1961 classic lm’s namesake; this Ti any’s is an Oscar-worthy breakfast and lunch eatery owned by Ti any and James Hobgood that’s full of charm, avor and a lot of love for the community.

“Everyone has really embraced us,” Ti any says. “We are so appreciative of the support. It was a leap of faith, but everything worked out in God’s perfect timing.”

HOW IT BEGAN

James and Ti any met at church and James knew right away he was going to marry her.

While he doesn’t claim to be a prophet, he was right.

Despite a few hiccups of life along the way, the two found their way to each other and now have two sons, Kaden and Colton.

Ti any and James also found their way to the kitchen. They love to cook together.

“We would always give each other ‘Chopped’ challenges,” James says. “I would go to the store and bring home a bunch of di erent items and she would see what she could make from it. Then she would do the same. We had a ton of fun.”

The two often talked about opening a restaurant together one day, but life and their respective careers didn’t allow it. Ti any was working as an accountant and James at Floors of Distinction. Most recently, James became the worship arts director for Church of the Lakes.

“We had been talking about doing something di erent for so long and we had never done it, so I nally just suggested we go for it,” James says. “She went away on a trip with her mom, and I kid you not, by the time

she got back, she had a full-blown business plan.”

A LEAP OF FAITH

Now, they just needed a space. Having grown up in Leesburg, they knew they wanted to be a part of their hometown. They looked at a couple of di erent places, but felt God was calling them to their current location on 5th Street. However, the space needed a lot of work.

Good thing that James had a construction background because the entire restaurant, formerly The Amsterdammer, needed a major makeover. Walls were torn down, a new kitchen was constructed, air ducts and vents installed and everything was painted.

“It’s an extension of my living room,” Ti any says about the restaurant’s vibes.

Right after acquiring the facility, they decided to o er takeout food during Leesburg’s Bikefest as a test run for some of their menu items. Ti any came up with a couple of

RECIPE
JUNE'24 LAKEANDSUMTER STYLE .COM / 119

di erent recipes that were both yummy and easy to walk around with, like the biscuit gravy bomb, which remains on the menu today.

“It was a huge hit,” Ti any says. “It’s been one of our most popular items. I make the sausage gravy in small batches, then ll a buttery biscuit with it. It’s a di erent take on biscuits and gravy but much easier to manage on the go.”

What was expected to be a couple of months of renovations turned into one hurdle after another. Between reconstruction, permits and unforeseen expenses, 11 months went by before they were nally able to open.

“Honestly, even though it was rough and very uncertain at times, if we had opened sooner, we wouldn’t have the amazing server and cook that we have, so everything was on God’s timing,” Ti any says.

ON THE MENU

Breakfast and lunch are served daily from 7am to 2pm. Yes, that means you can have a cheeseburger for breakfast or pancakes for lunch.

Popular options on the breakfast menu include the ultimate breakfast casserole, a mouthwatering tater-tot casserole with crispy bacon, zesty ranch, melted cheese and eggs and topped with ranch and bu alo sauce.

Also on the menu is the hearty hometown breakfast with classic eggs, bacon, sausage and a side, and the steak breakfast, which comes with an 8-oz. grilled steak and choice of side. Other menu items include savory corned beef hash and the traditional lite breakfast with two eggs, two slices of Canadian bacon and a side.

Don’t forget to try the signature sausage gravy bomb with a madefrom-scratch biscuit and house-made sausage gravy.

For a sweeter meal, try the PB&J stack, created by the Hobgoods’ boys. It o ers three u y pancakes topped with fresh strawberries, peanut butter and strawberry sauce with a dust of powdered sugar.

“WE ARE SO APPRECIATIVE OF THE SUPPORT. IT WAS A LEAP OF FAITH, BUT EVERYTHING WORKED OUT IN GOD’S PERFECT TIMING.”
— TIFFANY HOBGOOD

They also o er cinna-sugar biscuit bites with cinnamon, sugar and a sweet cream drizzle and an apple joy biscuit, which is a combination of a biscuit and apple pie.

Lunch dishes include a roast beef Philly, a stacked BLT club, an All American burger, a BBQ bacon burger, a sunrise burger with bacon and a sunny-side-up egg and a variety of salads, like the strawberry apple salad with crisp romaine lettuce, strawberries, apple slices, sliced turkey, feta cheese and candied pecans with a raspberry vinaigrette.

They also have a kids menu for the little ones.

Looking for a pick-me-up? The restaurant serves HOPE Co ee, which bene ts missionaries all over the world and funds service projects that provide clean water and safe places to life in countries where the co ee beans are grown.

inspiration for naming their café. As Christians, they wanted to pay homage to God by naming it Heaven’s Table.

“We wanted to give Him the glory, because without Him, none of this was

adding avor, and the dishes all just came together.

“I wanted our food to have a taste of what we experienced putting these recipes together – our love for each other, which then translates into the food,” Michael says.

Shanrika also puts a lot of love and pride in choosing the ingredients they use.

“I don’t want to cook anything frozen, everything should be fresh,” she says. “It adds to the taste of our food and what we’re trying to present to the customers.”

She is also keen on feedback and is always asking their customers to tell her if there’s something she can do to better serve them.

HOW IT STARTED

The menu o ers classic options including hot dogs, wings, burgers, sh and chips and tacos paired with a variety of side item options. Every ingredient is carefully chosen and all the food is freshly made to order from recipes developed from the many times Michael would cook for Shanrika – di erent kinds of chicken, salmon and Fettucine Alfredo dishes.

Then she would give Michael her recommendations for seasonings and

Michael and Shanrika’s journey to becoming business owners began when an opportunity to take on a food truck came out of nowhere. Michael went for it, and in June of 2023, they became established as Mike’s Smokehouse BBQ.

Right away they tried to nd new locations where they could set up their truck. Blueberry Hill and Red Oaks RV Resorts in Bushnell were two of their favorite spots. Many residents in the area had seen them on Facebook, including Dianne Ward, the previous director of activities. Michael and Shanrika’s food truck was her go-to for events when others didn’t show.

Dianne noticed how much everyone loved the food and how often customers showed up at their truck. One day, she suggested that Michael and Shanrika check out the fully

furnished on-site kitchen space inside their clubhouse. They began chatting with the RV resort management about leasing the kitchen and decided to sell their food truck. At the same time, they were also considering opening at Lake Square Mall in Leesburg. Ultimately, at the very last minute, Blueberry Hill won them over.

It made sense to go that route. The couple felt they had developed a strong following and connection

with customers who lived in the area. So they got everything set up for Heaven’s Table Café and Catering and opened in November 2023.

HOW IT’S GOING

Being on a property among residents makes it easier for patrons to just walk over and grab a quick bite. The busier days are when the community hosts events like bingo and karaoke nights that have a very large turnout.

Across the wall near the takeout window at Heaven’s Table is a playful 50s-style mural, which leads to the main seating area. You can also order food from an inside window. Picnic tables are provided for those who prefer outside seating.

When I went on a recent Friday evening, I chose to order from the outside walk-up window. Friday night bingo was in full swing inside, so I opted to eat at an outdoor table, too.

I ordered teriyaki wings and they were honestly some of the best I’ve ever had. The meat pulled o the bone so easily and the teriyaki sauce was very avorful. The wings had a savory taste with a hint of

sweetness. The order came with ve wings, which was plenty because they also came with a side. I ordered sweet potato fries. A good sweet potato fry can sometimes be hard to nd and sometimes end up overcooked. Thankfully these were perfect.

I also ordered a sweet tea, and even that had its own fresh brewed, in-house taste. It was the right amount of sweetness in my book.

Overall, the experience was very pleasing and laidback. It’s a great spot to grab a quick lunch or dinner and the service is friendly and welcoming.

LIFTING SPIRITS

Sharing sobriety & serving inclusivity with booze-free bevvies.

fter decades in hospitality, I’m convinced that most bartenders are either hungover, very disciplined, in recovery or “sober-curious.”

Recently, years of self-examination changed my curiosity into an alcohol-free daily ritual. And I have no desire to ride the wagon back to ‘boozeville’ any time soon.

I’m not alone. The trend toward living alcohol-free is on the rise and those of us with a will to embrace a healthy, sober lifestyle no longer have to feel excluded, embarrassed or forced to drink crappy, onenote beverages.

“The growing industry of zero-proof spirits is on the rise and growing exponentially,” says Taylor Boyd, veteran mixologist and owner/operator

of “Re nd” Alcohol-Free Bar (Bartender Rental LLC).

“Brands like Seedlip, Ritual and Lyre’s are o ering alcohol-free tequila, gin and rum using botanical extracts and healthy plant-based ingredients,” Taylor says. “Let’s face it, no one actually loves the taste of pure ethanol. That is the whole point of distilling with avors — to mask the taste.”

Taylor started his mobile bar service in 2019, and now channels his experience to re ect his newfound perspective on alcohol and its place in social gatherings. He decided to refocus his career to accommodate his own sober lifestyle, and the timing is spot-on for this critical juncture in mixology.

“My journey took a transformative turn in 2022 when I embraced sobriety,” says the 35-year-old pioneer. “This personal decision was not just a lifestyle change but

a moment of clarity regarding the direction of my professional future.”

Like me, Taylor shies away from saying “mocktail.” He prefers to elevate ‘alcohol-free beverages’ by sprucing them up with ingredients like concentrated teas, vinegars and shrubs.

“Re nd is more than a name change,” Taylor says. “It represents a fundamental shift towards inclusivity, wellness and the art of mixology minus the alcohol. And if I continued to serve alcohol, it would feel inauthentic.”

His mission is to change the narrative and rede ne what it means to enjoy a drink.

“We want to cater to everyone’s desire to celebrate, connect and enjoy the moment, regardless of their drinking preferences,” he says.

To learn more about Taylor or to book Re nd for an event, go to re ndbar.com.

It’s Cool to be Kind

’ve been in hospitality since I was 15 years old and have heard my share of customers losing their temper over lost reservations, burnt steaks and spilled red wine.

Clearly, some issues are more egregious than others, but 99% of the time, the reasons for blowing one’s stack are not life-altering nor earth-shattering.

I always wonder, why do we xate on the yelling guy? Why can’t we remember that lady who left $100 because the whole restaurant sang her happy birthday after her husband passed away? It’s a head-shaker for sure.

As I get older, I am trying to embrace all the positives and daily kindnesses that come my way instead of obsessing over the one family who dined-and-dashed back in 1998.

In our world where nastiness, tribalism and a permission structure for cruelty seems increasingly ordinary, I remind myself every day that kindness is everywhere. And I feel like we should notice it and not take the little things for granted.

It may be a Southern thing, but I’m not sure I’ve ever opened the door for myself at a convenience store since I landed in Florida even though I admire it each time I see such courtesy. More often than not, a trucker or regular Joe will let me in front of them when I am driving

through tra c or construction. And guess what? You can call me “ma’am” all the live long day and I’ll walk away with a smile thinking ‘how respectful!’

So, I’m putting this challenge out for all: try some simple kindness. Open the door for that senior. Compliment your coworker’s dress, tattoo or hairstyle. Thank the cashier at the grocery store while using their name. Think the best of people. Try not to judge them, even if they seem to have alternative beliefs.

I’m convinced that we have way more in common than not, and we can agree to disagree then hug it out. It doesn’t take that much e ort . . . but a little kindness might go a long way.

Hey, readers! Is there a particular subject that you would like me to write a commentary about? Tell me, via email, at gina@akersmediagroup.com.

IMPOSSIBLE IS IMPOSSIBLE. UNTIL IT ISN’T.

At UF Health, we redefine impossible. Just as elite athletes defy expectations, we too embrace a relentless pursuit of excellence. In every heartbeat, in every breath, there is a determined spirit that whispers “more.” It drives champion athletes. It fuels their desire to be the best. To win gold.

That same spirit is found at UF Health — to be the best for our patients. That’s why we are creating Florida’s first network of mobile stroke treatment units, to save time and save lives. And why we don’t just do research, we empower it with one of the fastest supercomputers in academia.

At UF Health, we aim to break the limits set before us, because we know that human progress has no finish line.
