Manometry

Gastrointestinal C O N S U LTA N T S

Many times if patients complain about trouble swallowing or fecal incontinence, they may be eligible for a quick, painless procedure called a manometry.

The most common types of this test are an esophageal manometry and an anorectal manometry. Both test the strength of the sphincter muscles in both regions.

Esophageal Manometry “During the esophageal manometry, we determine if the upper and lower sphincter muscles are pushing fluid out of the esophagus and into the stomach,” says Tina Bertino, a manometry nurse and endoscopy technician at GastroIntestinal Consultants. “If the muscles are too restrictive, it can be keeping fluid in the esophagus, thus causing people to feel like they are choking or have something stuck in their throat,” adds Glenda Wilson, also a manometry nurse at Gastro-Intestinal Consultants.

To perform the esophageal manometry, a small catheter is inserted through the nose, down the esophagus, and into the tip of the stomach. “Then we give them a series of 10 swallows using a saline solution to measure the muscle strength,” says Tina.

Anorectal Manometry During an anorectal manometry for fecal incontinence, the procedure is similar except a catheter with a small balloon attachment is used.

The balloon is then inflated to evaluate a patient’s bowel function.

Using this amazing assessment tool, Dr. Nagabhairu has been able to diagnose and treat several patients.

“Gastro-Intestinal Consultants was one of the first practices in Central Florida to offer this revolutionary test,” Glenda says. “As a result, we have been able

to diagnose people with conditions like non-cardiac causes of chest pains, esophageal dysmotility, achalasia, and sclevaderma. In many cases, we have found medication was all they needed.

It has been great for our patients.”

Tina agrees. “Our patients are always pleased to know there is a test out there that can help them determine why they are having these problems.

… people would have said it was impossible.

What were the chances?

I proudly present to you, our loyal readers of Lake & Sumter Style, our third annual Businessmen of Style issue. However, something quite interesting happened as we were planning this month’s issue that I cannot help but share with you all.

As we were brainstorming this year’s Businessmen and Businesswomen of Style issues, we wanted to come up with something exciting for the participants as a way to change things up from the previous years. Therefore, we decided to put one businesswoman and one businessman on the cover of each issue.

However, how would we decide? There are so many worthy professionals from which to choose.

After much deliberation, we elected to host two mixers — one for the businesswomen and one for the businessmen. At each party, we held a reverse drawing with all the names of each businessperson featured in the magazine, and whichever name was drawn last was deemed the winner of the cover feature.

As you already saw last month, Missy Ziler was the winner of the Businesswomen of Style cover feature. And — get this — as you can see with our latest June issue, Missy’s husband, Joe Ziler, won the Businessmen of Style cover feature. Husband and wife both won the drawings at two different times.

If it wasn’t for the fact that there were about 50 witnesses at each drawing, people would have said it was impossible. What were the chances? However, Joe and Missy were both great to work with, and we had a blast putting together both of these issues.

I hope you enjoy reading about a number of our local businessmen and that you gain a sense of pride in knowing we have such amazing men leading our community. Thank you to all of the marvelous businessmen who participated this year. You sure do look stylish!

The ripe stuff There was a time in Central Florida when orange groves stretched as far as the eye could see. Long before Mickey Mouse made his appearance in Orlando, Central Florida counties were major players in the citrus industry. In fact, the region is the big reason why Florida went from producing 43 million boxes of citrus in 1945 to 72 million in 1952, according to the Division of Library and Information Services’ website Florida Memory.

To help promote the area’s booming citrus industry, the Citrus Tower in Clermont was opened in July 1956 to attract visitors and give them a bird’s-eye view of the seemingly endless miles of orange groves.

The 226-foot tall building (equivalent to a 22-story building) was constructed out of steel and concrete.

Visitors took an elevator to

a glass-enclosed observation deck to see the citrus trees, as well as lakes and rolling hills.

“Originally, the tower was only going to be 75 feet high, but they decided that was not going to be tall enough,” says Barbara Ginney, a sales associate at the Citrus Tower.

Because giant theme parks had not yet found their way to Central Florida, the Citrus Tower instantly became a big hit.

Tourists and locals alike made their way to this sweet attraction, which in those days featured a candy-making factory and a glass-blowing area to make souvenirs. Guests also had an opportunity to purchase orange juice.

“The Citrus Tower made Clermont famous,” Ginney says. “There were not many things to do in this area, so it was a very popular attraction.”

It took 13 months to construct the Citrus Tower.

Five million pounds of concrete and 149,000 pounds of reinforcing steel were used to build this massive structure.

The major freezes in 1983 and 1989 dealt a serious blow to the local citrus industry. And when Orlando became the country’s top theme park destination, the popularity of the Citrus Tower waned.

Today, the panoramic view of oranges groves is nothing more than a bittersweet memory as citrus trees have been replaced by rooftops.

Still, Ginney says the view remains breathtaking. “You can go to the top today and see Epcot Center’s Spaceship Earth and downtown Orlando’s skyline. People also love seeing the rolling hills and abundance of lakes. Some are even able to locate their home.”

On clear days without humidity, guests can see parts of Lake, Sumter, Orange, Polk, Pasco, Hernando, Osceola, and Seminole counties. Once you finish viewing the area’s beautiful landscape, you can explore the tower’s gift shop, which offers a wide variety of items including glassware, jewelry, clothing, shoes, purses, and refrigerator magnets.

A trip to the Citrus Tower is definitely worth your time, especially if you want to see an attraction rooted in history.

Household name

A step above Ciara Hopkins, a sophomore at Montverde Academy, is a rising star in the triathlon world. That was apparent when USA Triathlon (USAT) — the official governing body of the sport — released its national age group rankings in late March.

A resident of Clermont, Hopkins was ranked as the country’s secondbest triathlete in the 15-year-and-under age group. She competes for the Triton Elite Multisport High Performance Team, which helps develop teenage triathletes to compete at the highest level of triathlon competitions.

She is also a member of Montverde Academy’s cross country and track and field teams. At age 11, she became the youngest competitor to ever complete the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco.

Soaring with the Eagles

A wheel to help In March, The Village Bicycle Club held its second annual fundraising bike ride, We Bike for Kids. The event attracted 285 riders throughout Florida and raised more than $12,000.

Two local nonprofit organizations benefited from the event — the Sumter County Youth Center and Project Legacy. The Sumter County Youth Center addresses the social service needs of youth by providing a 34,000 square-foot facility that includes outdoor basketball courts, computer labs, classrooms, table games, and a snack bar. Project Legacy, headed

by Revered Sidney Brock of Heritage Community Church in Wildwood, identifies the needs of local children and meets those needs through local resources and partners.

After the ride, participants returned to Sea Breeze Recreation Center in The Villages and enjoyed lunch from Red Sauce, free massages offered by Therapeutic Touch, raffle prizes, and music performed by disc jockey Bob Flower.

Recent Mount Dora Christian Home and Bible School graduates Josef Alleyne and Billy McKinney accomplished something that few young men ever do. They became Eagle Scouts.

To become an Eagle Scout, a boy must meet 398 requirements, the last of which is the Eagle Project.

This project is designed to show a scout’s leadership capabilities by supervising others in its planning, development, and implementation. McKinney supervised 11 other Scouts in building a bat house, which was placed at Wooton Park in Tavares.

Alleyne designed and planted a prayer garden on the Mount Dora Christian Home and Bible School campus, supervising six other teens from the project’s conception to its completion.

These two men join an elite group. Out of 104 million Boy Scouts, only 40,029 have earned their Eagle Scout badge.

As a young boy, Joe Ziler watched his father start on the ground floor of Pittsburghbased PPG Industries and ultimately advance to a highlevel management position.

He will never forget those memorable words his father spoke on the day Joe left home to attend college.

“My father said, ‘You need to go out there and make a name for yourself; you don’t want to grow up being John Ziler’s son.’ I got into my car and thought he was a jerk to say that to me. It took me a while to figure out he was right.”

More than 25 years later, Joe has indeed made a name for himself — as both a successful businessman and a generous humanitarian. After moving up the corporate ladder with numerous national and local homebuilding companies, he now owns a thriving homebuilding and remodeling company of his own.

Despite his achievements, he is quite grounded and modest.

Joe supports numerous local children’s organizations to provide brighter futures for boys and girls. And he certainly does not live a luxurious lifestyle. At one point in his career when he was earning

six-digit figures, his colleagues teased him for pulling into the parking lot each day driving a 1997 Chevy pickup with more than 200,000 miles. They ribbed him even harder when he spent several years living in a doublewide trailer on his current property.

“When I finally bought a brand-new truck, I parked it in my garage for four months before anybody even knew I had it because I wanted to continue driving my Chevy pickup. I still have the Chevy today because, to me, it is a symbol of being frugal. You never know when the good times may end.”

BORN TO BUILD When Joe brought his neighbors, Roy and Mary Teter, a bowl of strawberries as a 4-year-old boy in West Virginia, he soon discovered his love for building. His neighbors were a lovely couple in their 50s with no children. They fell in love with Joe, and he became their surrogate child.

The husband was a railroad engineer who worked in a woodshop located in his basement. The curious boy spent every day at their home watching the skilled craftsman work magic with his hands. He would also assist the man whenever he performed various home improvement projects.

“Nobody in my family could hang a picture on the wall,” he says. “Yet, for some reason I would go to Roy’s woodshop and become fascinated by the little things that he did. He would make me all kinds of neat items.”

Back in those days, registration for kindergarten was done alphabetically.

Therefore, Joe was denied enrollment when he turned 5. At the same time, Mary, a first-grade school teacher, was newly diagnosed with cancer.

“While she was out of school on a cancer sabbatical, I would go over to her house. She would teach me on a firstgrade level when I should have been in kindergarten. That was very exciting to me, and for her, it was therapeutic.”

Although Mary died of uterine cancer, Roy is 95 and still living in West Virginia. “I go visit Roy once

a year,” Joe says. “He always says to me, ‘You do what you do for a living because of me, don’t you?’ There’s no doubt that he made a big impression on me because here I am 43 years later still talking about him and still visiting him. We are products of our upbringing and environment, and that was certainly true for me.”

HOME, SWEET HOME Joe attended Clarion University of Pennsylvania and Allegheny Community College in Pittsburgh.

However, anxious to make a name for himself in the real world and earn money, he left college before finishing his degree in finance.

His path toward the homebuilding industry began in 1990. While working as a route salesman for Pepsi, he decided to buy a starter home in a West Virginia subdivision. Because his home was nicer than the model home, Bill Robie, the owner of the Virgina-based community, asked Joe to hold open houses on the weekend.

“He paid me a birddog fee, and this is how I got the taste for the industry,” he says. “I sold some houses, and six months later, he asked me to do this fulltime. I agreed to it because he paid me a full commission on each home I sold.”

Having discovered a magical touch for selling homes, Joe became a licensed Realtor. He quickly mastered the art of real estate, earning more than $20,000 in commission in May 1992. Out of 420 Realtors in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, he ranked among the top 10 in total sales volume.

“I thought to myself, ‘Wow, this is just incredible,’” he says. “This is one of those businesses where there is a direct correlation between how hard you work and what you receive in return.”

For Joe, this success led to a bigger and better opportunity with Tampabased Jim Walter Homes, which at the time was one of the country’s largest homebuilding companies. He started at the company in 1995 as a branch manager. By 1999, he became a divisional construction manager

and was overseeing 32 offices ranging from Fort Myers to Indianapolis.

Unhappy with the company’s massive reorganization effort, Joe stepped down in 2004 and several months later moved from Tampa to Lake County. He became a construction manager with Pringle Development, a well-known local company that has built retirement communities such as Lakes of Mount Dora and Royal Harbor in Tavares. He was quickly promoted to vice president and later became chief operating officer of Pringle Homebuilding Group.

ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT After spending years working for large homebuilding companies, Joe had developed an entrepreneurial spirit and decided to become his own boss. In April 2008, he purchased Kevco Builders from Kevin Burkholder, who opened the company 33 years ago. That was a gutsy move considering the economy was in the beginning of a downward spiral.

“Since the economy was tanking, I was banking on the fact that historically, as homebuilding declines, remodeling picks up.”

Running his own company demanded much of his time and focus. Using his strong leadership skills and business savvy, Joe worked hard to plan and execute ideas, make key financial decisions, and successfully manage employees. However, he had to draw upon another quality to help his new company overcome the economy — survival instincts.

“Several months after purchasing the company I began second-guessing myself,” he says. “The economy was tanking badly. But I was never going to quit. I kept telling myself that I would figure this problem out because I always figure things out. That’s just who I am.”

To save money, he officially parked all company trucks and moved the office into a rent-free space in Leesburg. But his big break came in 2009 when he met the owner of a mold remediation company who asked Joe to begin repairing

water- and fire-damaged homes.

“That one meeting changed everything for the company,” he says. “We are now repairing fire- and water-damaged homes in nine Florida counties. That’s why I say this is a relationship business and not a money business. When you make the right relationships, money takes care of itself.”

In October 2011, Joe diversified the company by adding a homebuilding division. The company’s first home, constructed in Tavares, was the recipient of the “Best in Value Merit Award” and “Best in Class” at the 2012 Home Builders Association of

arrogant, and materialistic, Joe is downto-earth, personable, and altruistic.

He particularly has a soft spot in his heart for children. Last December, when the Department of Children and Families held a Christmas party for foster children, Joe proudly played the role of Santa Claus. For him, it was a jolly old-time — and an emotional one, as well.

“One girl had me in tears. When I asked her what she wanted for Christmas, she told me she wanted a baby doll and her family. I was so choked up that by the time the next kid sat on my lap it was hard to ask

“People will question me about why I became involved with something because I won’t receive any business from it,” he says. “You don’t give back to the community hoping for business or tax deductions; you do it purely out of the goodness of your heart because you hope you can better the community. My passion is helping children because they are the future. If you can make a difference in a child’s life in some way, that can change the future path of that child. And that changes the world around us.”

“Only once did I put money into the company to make payroll,” he says.

“And we always paid our employees and suppliers on time. Other than that, the company has sustained itself through the downturn and up the other side.”

That marked Joe’s first time playing Santa, but it certainly will not be his last. “When the party is over, you are supposed to dry clean the suit and give it back to the Department of Children and Families. He also donates money to local youth charities and sports teams and assists Companions for Courage, a nonprofit therapy dog group that is operated by his wife, Missy. Through this organization, dogs and their handlers provide comfort to child abuse victims during private interviews and court cases. For Joe, none of this is for personal gain; it’s about

answering whether making money and owning nice things is more important than giving back to society. For Joe, it’s a no-brainer.

“If you do enough good things for other people and your motivation isn’t to receive something in return, then you become blessed beyond imagination.”

Those words would undoubtedly make Joe’s father proud. His son has been a success in his chosen profession but more importantly, gives back to enrich the lives of others. What better way to make a name for yourself than that?

After purchasing Kevco Builders five years ago, Joe Ziler quickly second-guessed his decision.

Few could blame him, especially since 2008 marked the beginning of an economic downturn that lingers today. Other homebuilding and remodeling companies across the country were closing their doors for good.

Joe had to figure out how to retract and save money, which required a completely different skill set than growing a company. Projects were completed with a skeleton crew. All company trucks were officially parked. And he moved the office to U.S. 27 in Leesburg into a rent-free space, and added a showroom.

Connections matter One reason my family and I love Lake County is because of its small-town charm coupled with the vitality and diversity of a larger city.

Here, we truly get the best of both worlds. These two arteries are in the pelvic area, which is constantly in motion. Superficial femoral and popliteal artery y The relationship between the arteries in the pelvis and thigh is a delicate and complicated one. One might say that disease in these arteries is the Achilles heel of physicians today. So what makes the superficial femoral and popliteal arteries the most commonly diseased arteries in the body?

Location, location, location. As its name indicates, the superficial femoral artery (SFA) travels alongside the femur supplying the thigh muscles with nutrient- and oxygenrich blood. The SFA connects to the popliteal artery at the end of the femur behind the knee, putting these two arteries in the part of the body that is almost constantly in motion.

When you bike, walk, or even dip in and out of your car, the SFA and popliteal are constantly extending, contracting, compressing, and flexing, making it a delicate system to care for.

More than 50 percent of all peripheral artery disease (PAD) cases involve the SFA and popliteal artery. PAD is a condition in which sticky plaque made up of cholesterol, calcium,

ur and fibrous tissue causes the arteries in our extremities to harden, preventing blood from travelling freely. Meanwhile, the slow-flow of blood in the thigh region creates a scenario that makes it prone to a unique set of vascular diseases. Back in circulation All my life I have had good eating habits, gotten enough sleep, and worked until my late husband and I moved to Florida in 1995.

every 200 Americans has had an amputation — 97 percent of those in a lower limb. To pile tragedy on top of tragedy, many of those amputations could have been averted with adequate treatment.

Enter world-renowned cardiologist Dr. Asad Qamar and the Limbstitute.

the feet,” Dr. Qamar says.

However, he quickly adds, “Not all blockages present with symptoms. Sometimes the ischemia is completely asymptomatic. And because prevention and early detection are key to the best outcomes, it’s important to see your family physician and podiatrist regularly.”

Dr. Qamar’s newest venture, the Limbstitute, gathers all of the specialized testing and treatment procedures for at-risk patients under one roof. It is a resource many doctors and their patients are glad to see come to the region.

Assessment is the first step at the Limbstitute, with a comprehensive medical history and non-invasive physical examination to determine the likelihood of the existence of a blockage.

There are many potential causes for an arterial blockage: heredity, injury, smoking, and diabetes. If a physical exam determines that a blocked artery is probable, the gold standard for ultimate diagnosis is angiography. Dye is injected into the femoral artery and a computer program follows the dye’s progress through

the arterial map to pinpoint a location.

Once a diagnosis is confirmed, the next step is removal of the blockage. A catheter is inserted into the artery to deliver a stent, a balloon, or sometimes, both to the affected area. When the blockage is removed and blood flow is restored, the result is often immediate and dramatic.

Recovery is the most time-consuming part of the treatment. The procedure itself usually only takes minutes to perform, but recovery will require about two hours. After that, a home health nurse will be assigned to keep a close eye on a patient’s progress.

Follow-up care is important to monitor healing and be sure clots don’t return to the injured area.

The entire process, from detection of a problem to its ultimate resolution, should serve as one, huge warning sign to the potential presence of something far more sinister than the loss of a limb. In the great majority of cases, the presence of occluded arteries in a lower limb is indicative of developing blockages in the arteries of the heart.

Loss of life through a heart attack or pulmonary embolism is often the first and only warning a person may get that his or her arteries were in trouble. At least some good can come from the early warning trouble in a foot or leg. What a person does next can be a life or death decision.

“Regular cardiovascular checkups should become a part of every patient’s life after resolving a critical limb ischemia,” Dr. Qamar says.

“Even when the outcome is 100 percent successful.”

Outcomes, of course, are what the Limbstitute is all about. After investing a mere afternoon with the doctors and specialists there, a patient’s foot or leg could be saved and an entire lifetime of healthy, happy activity could be restored. That is quite a bargain.

Save a limb. Save a life.

Some may go so far as to describe the process as miraculous. But then, to Dr. Qamar and the other medical professionals at the Limbstitute, miracles are all in a day’s work.

Home brewing is not a new concept. In fact, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were avid home brewers in their heyday. But recently, the popularity of this hopping hobby has skyrocketed as people aspire to quench their thirst with their own creations.

Beer. Some call it the nectar of the gods; others view it as just another refreshing drink option perfect for any occasion.

Nevertheless, whether you are a “lager lover” or an “ale addict,” beer is considered one of the oldest beverages known to mankind and has been enjoyed by Americans since the Pilgrims first landed on Plymouth Rock.

But in recent years, a new beer trend has been on the rise. Beer aficionados are taking their passion to the next level by delving into the increasingly popular world of home brewing. No folks, this isn’t the bathtub brew of prohibition days; it has become an art, an art two Lake County men treat as a constant labor of love and never-ending quest to craft the perfect beer.

For 15 years, Leesburg mayor David Knowles has been an avid home brewer.

It began with his wife buying him a beer brewing kit for Christmas one year. “I thought it would be fun,” Knowles says.

“Plus, this beer doesn’t have any additives or preservatives so it’s real beer.”

After two failed batches, he called on a friend and found a good beer-brewing store that helped make his third batch a success.

“And from then on I was hooked,” he says.

When it comes to keeping a constant supply of homemade beer, Knowles brews five-gallon batches about two to four times a year at his Leesburg home. He then stores the finished product inside stainless steel Pepsi or Coke containers. “The hardest thing is deciding how you will contain your beer,” he says.

Dr. Held, who started out storing his beer in bottles, decided to build his own dispensing kegerator when he moved to Florida, though he still uses bottles for special occasions. He then later had a commercial-grade draft dispenser installed in his home, which is great for entertaining friends and family.

But before both men can enjoy their handiwork, they have to brew it first.

Knowles says a typical brew can take about two to three hours. Then after cooling the wort (the mixture of malt, hops, and water), adding yeast for fermentation, and bottling it, Dr. Held says brewers should wait six to

and a dark stout that he describes as similar to Guinness, but thicker. “I also make a variety of light beers to try out, but I like my stout. My stout is actually quite good.”

On the other hand, fellow longtime local brewer Dr. Richard Held is more experimental with his beers. “I’ve made beers with chocolate, chili peppers, limes, and oatmeal. I’m always trying new things,” he says. “I’ve also tried to replicate commercial brands, but I still enjoy doing my own recipes.”

Dr. Held began brewing in 1999 when he lived in Long Island, New York — a place he says seriously lacked good, quality beer.

For those thinking of taking up home brewing as a hobby, Knowles says people should know it is an inexpensive one. “The good kits will come with instructions and cost between $20 and $40,” he says. “Then to get all the things you need like a big pot, bottles, and other apparatuses, you could easily get everything for under $100.”

It’s also a very rewarding hobby, Dr. Held adds. “Like cooking or baking, you are making something special from raw materials,” he says. “Then with a little bit of patience, you are able to enjoy the fruits of your labor and share it with others.”

Beer brats Yield: 5 servings

INGREDIENTS: 2 (12-ounce) cans beer 1/2 large onion, diced 1/2 large green pepper, sliced 5 bratwurst sausages 1/2 teaspoon garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Preheat a cast-iron skillet or an outdoor grill to medium-high heat. When hot, lightly oil and cook bratwurst for 5 to 10 minutes until browned on both sides.

Combine beer, green peppers, and onions in a large pot and bring to a boil. Add garlic, salt, and pepper and submerge bratwurst in beer mixture. Reduce heat to medium and cook for 10 to 12 minutes.

Remove the bratwurst from the beer mixture; reduce heat to low, and continue cooking the onions.

Serve on a hot dog bun or hoagie roll with the beer mixture, sauerkraut, and Dijon mustard.

The long, slender lakes lying south of Rochester and Syracuse in upstate New York have beckoned visitors to their shores for years. It’s not just the picturesque scenery of the Finger Lakes region that offers a respite during summer but also the cool, crisp wines that are finally getting national recognition.

Steamy temps call for crisp, refreshing wines, and Rieslings can be an excellent choice to pair with summer menus or to sip lazily by the pool. While the varietal is produced in many areas, the Finger Lakes Rieslings truly capture a summer-in-the-glass essence that surprises many wine lovers who are not familiar with the region.

Until last summer, I was among those oenophiles who turned up my nose at Rieslings because I found many of them to be too sweet with no depth or character. An online wine “chat” one evening piqued my curiosity because all of the expert panelists were raving about the Rieslings — particularly the ones from Finger Lakes. I had read that the Finger Lakes area was an emerging wine tourism region, but so are many other places that produce “touristy” wines. I was surprised as I listened to wine experts from around the country praise qualities such as purity, crispness, and elegance in Finger Lakes wines.

The Finger Lakes Wine Alliance, a nonprofit corporation formed to increase the visibility and reputation of its wines, is masterful in using social media to promote the Finger Lakes American Viticulture Area (AVA). Regular online programs and videos offer education and information about the area’s wines.

Through the Alliance, I was able to acquire several Rieslings that represented a broad spectrum of flavors and to ask several winemakers about the region.

With more than 11,000 acres of vineyards, the Finger Lakes region is the largest wine-producing area east of California and one that has an illustrious history. Glaciers formed the deep, freshwater lakes thousands of years ago and left mineral deposits that make the wines unique. Its wine-growing roots can be traced to a rectory garden where

the Rev. William Bostwick planted Finger Lakes’ first vineyard in 1829. The most reverence, however, is given to Dr. Konstantin Frank, who is credited with elevating Finger Lakes wines from mediocre jug wines to world-renowned varietals.

A professor of plant sciences with a Ph.D. in viticulture, Dr. Frank believed it was the lack of proper rootstock — not the cold climate — that caused the failure of the Vitis Vinifera, or common grape vine. His research for growing the European Vinifera grape varieties in cold climates eventually led the way for Northeastern winemakers to produce European varieties of wines.

In 1962, Dr. Frank established his own winery near Keuka Lake, and today, Dr. Konstantin Frank Wine Cellars is New York’s most award-winning winery. The 2012 Dry Riesling has a soothing, floral aroma that makes the tart citrus flavors a pleasant surprise. Of all the Finger

Lakes wines I sampled, this had the most mineral characteristics and a tight acidity that balanced the fruity residual sugars.

The Lamoreaux Landing 2011 Red Oak Vineyard Riesling was described as medium-dry, and it paired perfectly with roast pork. Produced from one of Lamoreaux’s newest vineyards, the Riesling had subtle notes of honeysuckle and pears — two of my favorites.

At the other end of the spectrum was the Red Newt Cellars Tango Oaks Vineyard 2010 Riesling, which was sweeter than the other wines but still well balanced and food-friendly.

Assistant winemaker Kelby Russell told workshop participants that what is in the barrels now (the 2012 harvest) would be “the full opposite.” Red Newt, he explained, did not want to be shackled to a particular flavor profile.

Luckily, most wines from the Finger Lakes have the International Riesling Foundation Taste Profile scale printed on the label. Seeing the degree of sweetness before you buy is always helpful, especially when flavors can change from year to year.

Still very affordable, Finger Lakes wines are usually handcrafted. Most wineries ship to Florida and several are working on getting distribution to this area. With the recent publicity in national publications such as Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, it’s only a matter of time before we see Finger Lakes wines in our favorite shops or restaurants.

JB Boondocks Bar & Grill With the everyday hustle and bustle of life in Lake County, sometimes it’s nice to just get away from it all. Hidden away on the quiet shores of Little Lake Harris in Howey-in-theHills, JB Boondocks Bar and Grill is the perfect location to enjoy good food and appreciate surroundings that harken back to the days of Old Florida. “Howey is beautiful,” says Mary Sue Ortiz, who runs the restaurant with her brother, Frank Carillo. “It’s close to the way it was 20 years ago when I first moved here.”

Celebrating five years since its massive renovation in 2008, this casual dining and relaxation spot has easily become a favorite with locals and out-of-towners alike. “We’re more like a destination,” Mary Sue says.

“During the week, we do get a lot of the local workers in the area for lunch, but on the weekends, we get people from all over who are out boating and doing other recreational things.”

Inside, JB Boondocks has a spacious dining area that offers a spectacular view of the lake.

There is also a full indoor bar and an outdoor tiki bar on the shaded lakeside patio. However, what makes JB Boondocks unique is its ability to be accessed by car, motorcycle, seaplane, and boat. There are also covered boat slips available for rent, as well as a number of efficiencies that can be leased for a weeklong or monthlong getaway.

After being greeted by the restaurant’s gracious staff and chatting with Mary Sue, I sat back and enjoyed a glass of sweet tea before savoring my first entrée, the Howey Burger. A local favorite, this half-pound burger is topped with melted cheddar cheese, applewoodsmoked bacon, and baked beans, all assembled on a toasted Kaiser roll. Though I wasn’t sure I would enjoy baked beans on my burger,

I soon discovered the combination of the sweet, savory beans with the salty bacon is an unusual recipe for culinary perfection. It tastes so good I could not help but finish it. Also, the sweet potato fries are equally delicious and the coleslaw is a cool and creamy side that thoroughly balances out the meal.

Next, I tried the Chicken Juliette, which is a hearty pasta dish with sautéed chicken breast, garlic, Italian sausage, sun-dried tomatoes, broccoli, mushrooms, penne pasta, Romano cheese, and a touch of cream. From the moment the bowl was placed in front of me, the aromas from the sausage, garlic, and tomatoes piqued my interest.

The flavors of this particular dish meld well together. The broccoli is fresh and crisp; the pasta is cooked al dente; and the Italian sausage has the right amount of spiciness to give it a bit of a kick. This entrée also comes with warm garlic knots, which are incredible.

For dessert, Mary Sue insisted I try the White Chocolate Bread Pudding. I agreed, though typically I’m not a fan of bread pudding. However, keeping an open mind and stomach, I did find I could actually like bread pudding. This bread pudding wasn’t too sweet and the white chocolate and dark chocolate sauce wasn’t too overwhelming. It was certainly a great way to finish off an overall satisfying lunch.

In addition to the great food I tried during my brief visit, JB Boondocks has an impressive menu featuring great seafood and traditional Southern cuisine like po’ boy sandwiches, homemade chowders, and gator tail. Friday night features a fantastic fish fry starting at 4p.m., and Wednesday night is prime rib night. Furthermore, every Thursday at the bar is Ladies Night.

“Men no longer need to suffer from frequent urination because they are getting older,” says Dr. James Young, a down-toearth urologist with thirty-one years of experience in treating men with prostate problems in Lake County. Although the cause of these symptoms is most likely an enlarging prostate (BPH), a normal part of the aging process in men, treatment options are more numerous and less invasive than those offered to our fathers and grandfathers.

Years ago there were two options for treating an enlarged prostate: surgical excision via an open operation (knife) or much more commonly by performing a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), commonly referred to as a “roto-rooter” by patients and physicians. Both required hospitalization as well as major anesthesia and could be fraught with complications such as bleeding, infection, loss of bladder control and even death.

“In my career I have performed over 3,000 TURPs; however, I no longer perform any,” says Dr. Young. “There are presently too many excellent alternatives to consider a hospital operation for the vast majority of patients with BPH.” “When I see a new patient I perform a physical examination and properly evaluate the patient’s symptoms, thus diagnosing the underlying problem(s),” he says.

“Next, I describe to the patient what’s normal and then explain what is abnormal with him. Lastly, I teach him his treatment options. If I’ve done a good job of teaching, he will select the correct option for himself.”

While prescribing medications for BPH

can be done by primary care physicians, only urologists are trained to thoroughly evaluate the bladder and prostate (including ruling out prostate cancer), as well as providing extremely effective minimally invasive, office-based therapies as alternatives to lifelong medical therapy.

One such option is Prostiva-RF Therapy, a procedure performed by Dr. Young in his office under local anesthesia that usually takes less than thirty minutes. Getting a man to shop might be like pulling teeth. In fact, when compared to shopping, pulling teeth may sound like the better option to most men.

Okay, maybe that is stretching it a bit, but men typically do not like shopping when they have to buy something for somebody else.

However, when they are looking to purchase interesting items for themselves, they tend to shop until they drop.

That may very well be the case at Renningers inaugural Fathers’ Day Mantique Show, which takes place June 15th and 16th from 9a.m. to 5p.m. on both days. Dozens of antique dealers will roll into Mount Dora to showcase and sell manly items ranging from fishing tackle to hunting apparel.

“There will be items they can actually use, as well as items to help them decorate their man cave,” says Toni Moody, who serves as marketing and events coordinator for Renningers. “It will be a fun day to bring your husband or father here because there will be so much to see and do.”

STEP INTO A MAN’S WORLD Located on 117 acres off U.S. 441 in Mount Dora, Renningers is known for its antique fairs and flea markets, which are held every weekend. These events attract dealers throughout Florida who can set up shop in a 40,000-square-foot air-conditioned building, inside two open-air pavilions, or outdoors. In November, January, and February, more than 1,200 dealers flock to Renningers for the ever-popular Antique Extravaganza, the largest antiques and collectibles show in Florida.

Recently, the company began hosting themed events, such as a garden show and primitive show.

In May, females flocked to Renningers to enjoy a Mother’s Day

show and were treated to cookies, tea, and giveaways.

“We are trying to produce more shows on our property to attract a different group of buyers and dealers,” Moody says.

Certainly having the Father’s Day Mantique Show is a wonderful way to draw men to the property. After all, they will not be scared away by the thought of shopping for fashionable clothing items inside a large mall or big-box store.

“Even if men are not avid collectors, they can come to this show and discover something that piques their interest,” Moody says. “For instance, they may see an old fishing pole that looks exactly like the one they used as a kid when they went fishing with their father. These items will stir up wonderful memories.”

As they walk from one dealer booth to another, men can expect to find a wide range of items such as antique clocks, wooden boats, cars, sporting good items, fishing baskets, fishing tackle, and boating items. Most importantly, they will not have to wait in long lines to make a purchase.

“Because of the layout at Renningers, traffic flows very well,” Moody says. “The only time they’ll wait in line is for food.”

What is that? Food? Surely, all that walking and browsing will make a man hungry. They can visit The Grub Hub, a café located inside Renningers.

Owner Mandy Cushman cooks up a variety of tasty, homemade food items including Philly cheesesteaks, club sandwiches, hamburgers, and hot dogs. You may want to arrive there for breakfast to enjoy her biscuits and gravy and egg platters.

Never fear, men. You can survive a day of shopping, and nobody will question your masculinity. Moreover, you may very well walk away with an item you cherish for the rest of your life.

Buenos Aires Buenos Aires (or “Fair Winds” in English) is a name befitting South America’s second largest city. The youthful, fashion-conscious population of this culturally rich Argentine port moves purposefully but is ever so polite and welcoming to foreign visitors. Classy, cosmopolitan, sophisticated, and artsy with a touch of roughness, the various sectors of Buenos Aires make this a fascinating city like no other.

If we were to associate one word with our visit to Buenos Aires, it would be ‘tango.’ The twists and turns of this electric national dance ooze raw sensuality. It is performed as a serious art form in nightclubs and theaters, but it is also done in an impromptu fashion in city streets and public squares all over the city.

Sizzling and mesmerizing, the tango reflects the soul of many Argentine people who speak a fine, largely European-honed Spanish.

Access to Buenos Aires by ship is tricky. It sits on the silty Rio de la Plata estuary, which flows for a long distance eastward toward the Atlantic Ocean and tints the blue seawater a murky brown. To navigate the narrow, shallow, two-way shipping lane, both Argentina and Uruguay, which have major ports on this river, continuously dredge it. To maximize safety, large ships must wait their turn to join regulated navigation convoys. It is unexpected when traversing this unusual passageway to see ships with many flags sailing in the opposite direction in precariously close proximity, which is especially risky with the frequently high winds. But upon arrival, the vibrant pulse of the portenos (people of the port) and a very attractive skyline greet Buenos Aires visitors.

While the littered streets, graffiti, homeless people, and stray animals of Buenos Aires’ Retiro district remind me of the seedier parts of downtown Manhattan, magnificent architecture along with tree-lined streets and sprawling parks beautify most of Buenos Aires’ landscape.

Slicing the city’s center, Avenida 9 de Julio (July 9th Avenue) commemorates Argentina’s Independence Day. It boasts the city’s iconic obelisk, and at 459 feet wide, it is one of the world’s broadest thoroughfares. The Subte, an ever-expanding, tastefully decorated subway system, facilitates urban transit and helps avoid major traffic jams.

Argentina’s leader governs from The Pink House, so named because it was originally painted with a mixture of leftover red and white marine paint. This pink-paint tradition has continued, and the building is stunning with multicolored lighting at night. Perhaps the Palermo district, with a lovely park and wooded lake (Bosque de Palermo), is the most posh (many foreign embassies are located there). Nearly 90 percent of Buenos Aires’ population is of European descent, mainly from Italy, Spain, and Great Britain with the latter going there to build railroads in the 19th century.

The amazing La Recoleta cemetery is comprised of many square acres of ornately carved mausoleums. Museum-quality statuary abounds on uniquely styled crypts, a visible way for prominent local families to flaunt their wealth. The modest, black-marble Duarte family mausoleum boasts a plaque for former president, Eva (Evita) Duarte Peron, a revered heroine of the Argentine working

class. Her irresponsible generosity and ignorance of economic principles bankrupted the government, which still struggles more than half a century later. Although her remains were moved to a secret location for private interment to prevent theft or vandalism, fresh daily roses brought to the Duarte family mausoleum is proof her spirit is still loved by Argentine labor today.

The La Boca area of Buenos Aires is something else. A haven for artists, outdoor cafés, and urban culture, it offers outdoor displays of art for sale, memorable people-watching opportunities, and underground pastimes.

Its old wooden buildings are covered with random patches of every conceivable bright color and tinted with glossy marine paint remnants.

Surrounding the city are fashionable suburbs with walled homes and electrified fences, humid farmland, and drier pampas where fabulous Argentine beef is cultured. Although we rarely eat beef at home, we loved the succulent Argentine steaks from cattle that are largely bred without additives and hormones.

Surprisingly, Argentina is a huge exporter of soybeans to Asia.

Buenos Aires has something to please everyone, and a few days are hardly enough time to see everything and to get to know the warm-hearted, spirited residents.
