If you are a loyal reader who has followed the magazine the past couple of years you were probably expecting to see a fun artful cover featuring our “Fall Art Preview.” This was our original intention until I read a story written by our Staff Writer James Combs.

In May, James traveled with a group of World War II veterans on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to pay tribute to the memory of the soldiers who fought so valiantly in that war. The story left me with tears streaming down my face. It touched me deeper than I could have ever imagined. I immediately went to our Executive Editor Jim Gibson, and explained why I felt we should change directions with the plans to feature art and it was just two weeks away from our print deadline.

In the world of magazine publication, this is very challenging. After discussing the reasons supporting the change with Jim and Creative Director Steve Codraro, we all agreed this was exactly what we needed to do. We would still feature the Fall Art Preview, but for the first time in eight years it wouldn’t take center stage.

One of the reasons I decided to make the change was because of the situation we are currently facing as a nation. Our country is politically divided, and we are battling internally on the issue of what is the best direction we need to take. I feel it is our responsibility to our community to go back and share a reminder of the intent of our founding fathers when they created this great country.

As a business owner, if I feel our staff is veering off track or struggling to move forward because of different opinions within our organization, I go back to square one and look at our original mission statement. Then

we move forward only if it aligns with the goals and mission we determined at the inception of our company.

I think the same should hold true as a nation. Therefore, in honor of Veterans Day, the presidential election, and Thanksgiving, we are featuring a reminder that includes quotes from our Constitution and the Declaration of Independence… and words from some of the soldiers who felt these documents and all they stand for was worth risking their lives for.

Regardless of the election’s outcome we are all Americans. I am confident we can work together to move our country forward in the right direction. We are all members of the UNITED States of America, and it is only when we are UNITED that we are great.

To all our past and present servicemen and servicewomen, to my wonderful son Michael, who currently serves in the U.S. Navy, my husband, Doug, who also served in the Navy, my nephew David who serves in the U.S. Air Force, and my loving father who served in Vietnam — we owe our right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness to you. By the people In today’s multimedia age, we should begin the process of moving government back to the people instead of just to a select few (questionable politicians).

At some point, politicians stopped being representatives of the people. They have become servants to special interests, big business, and their own bank account. This is our fault for accepting it… and only we can change it. And to do so we have to stop electing more politicians.

We need ordinary, honest citizens to take back control of our government on all levels. A vote for me is a vote against the power-hungry politicians of today. Stop choosing the lesser of two evils.

I believe our entire system of education needs to be overhauled. Its very premise is outdated, and we can use the new technologies that have come along in the last few decades to change the way we teach and learn. I envision a system of education along the lines of the Khan Academy, Sal Khan’s innovative new way of teaching (www.khanacademy.org). I also envision trade schools as an alternative to academics. If I am not born with the mental capability to be a rocket scientist, then I shouldn’t have to learn algebra. What I can learn is how to build homes, roads, cars, or bridges, how to work on engines or machinery, or manage a business, etc.

Abortion will be available only for women who have been a victim of incest or rape, have a life-threatening illness that will be exacerbated by childbirth, or who are carrying a child with a definitive terminal illness.

Abortion will not be used for birth control, and it will not be used to erase “mistake” children. No abortion will take place after the first trimester of pregnancy. Adoption agencies manned by WPA workers (see last month’s letter) will place unwanted children with the millions of families worldwide now looking to adopt a child.

Family planning will be provided for all who want it. Besides being practical to hold a burgeoning population in check, it will also help curtail unwanted pregnancies. The fact is people have sex... and some of them at very young ages.

We can either pretend it isn’t happening and then deal with the unwanted pregnancies, or we can take preemptive action and provide a means of birth control. We shall provide both birth control and programs designed to educate young people on the dangers of sex at an early age.

I will appoint five select groups of businessmen and women, everyday citizens (lay persons), healthcare professionals, and intellectuals to tackle the issue of healthcare reform. Each group will attack the problem from different points of view ranging from simple adjustments to the present system to complete nationalized universal healthcare. Once all five plans are created, I will bring all five groups together to choose three of the five plans for final approval.

Final approval will be made by the American people. You will decide with your vote in a general election-type special ballot.

Each plan will be explained in detail, and no entity will be able to publicly back any specific plan. The plan that garners the most votes will be written into law and implemented.

Government by the people.

Crowning achievements Five girls in the Miss Sumter County Scholarship Pageant are learning about the importance and joy of volunteering. They include Miss Sumter County Landon Blackwelder of Webster, Teen Miss Sumter County Kaylin Paul of Lake Panasoffkee, Junior Miss Sumter County Alyssa Callaway of Oxford, Princess Miss Sumter County Emily Morrow of Bushnell, and Little Miss Sumter County Gralynn Munz of Oxford.

Their volunteer efforts range from assisting in the Sumterville Relay for Life to attending chamber luncheons and ribbon-cutting ceremonies. They also participate in festivals and parades held throughout Sumter County. These unique volunteer opportunities afford these young women an opportunity to grow within the community and steer them on the path to becoming tomorrow’s leaders.

Since its inception 50 years ago, the Miss Sumter County Scholarship Pageant has been sponsored by the Sumter County Fair Association, which provides $1,200 in scholarship awards to contestants.

Shining bright In October, Beacon College held a groundbreaking ceremony for its highly anticipated 8,000 square-foot classroom and administration building. The new facility will contain three stateof-the-art reconfigurable classrooms along with offices for administrative personnel. The college also intends to make this facility available to the public on a limited basis for community meetings.

This is the first academic building constructed by the institution in its 23-year history. “This building marks a significant milestone in the history of our college as the beginning of a much grander plan for expansion and enhancement of the educational facilities of the college,” says President John Hutchinson. “It is also testimony to the financial health of the institution and its very bright future.”

Let Freedom Ring

Last summer, kids from Little Darlings Children’s Center in Umatilla embarked on a field trip to the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail. During their visit, they hiked along a trail and saw Florida’s only endemic bird: the threatened Florida scrub-jay. Afterward, some students studied the various butterflies and wildflowers found on the property, while others learned how to plant native wildflowers in the pollinator garden.

Students concluded their fun-filled day by grooming miniature Sicilian donkeys and enjoying lunch under large oak trees.

The Florida Scrub-Jay Consortium encourages schools, home schools, scouts, and boys and girls clubs to come to the trail and see Florida’s wildlife and natural beauty up close and personal.

They sacrifice their time, life at home with their families, and, in some cases, their lives. And the emotional and physical wounds they bear sometimes never heal. The least we can do is give our veterans a heartfelt thanks for their valor and patriotism.

That is precisely why Royal Fund Management and the Rotary Club of Leesburg are hosting the Star Spangled USO-Style Show on November 10. The event, which is being held at the National Guard Armory in Leesburg, will include live performances by the LC Swing Band, Dance Dynamix dancers, and singer Ali Dickson. Vietnam veteran and comedian Andy Lucchini will perform, and his wife, Iris, will sing the national anthem. The event also includes a silent auction, cash bar, dinner, and dancing. Proceeds will benefit Project Support Our Soldiers, the Habitat for Humanity Veteran’s Housing Project, Cornerstone Hospice Salutes, and the Veteran’s Memorial in Leesburg.

The founding fathers of our nation knew that independence lay in unity. No one colony alone had the strength to defeat the British army and their mighty naval armada — but the revolution’s leaders knew that by fighting together, the thirteen colonies could realize victory.

Farmers, lawyers, businessmen, doctors… all manner of men fought shoulder-to-shoulder against British regulars at Lexington and Concord in 1775 as the arduous battle for independence began.

When the Second Continental Congress declared their intent to self-govern in July 1776, the preamble to the Declaration of Independence clearly laid out the foundation for the freedoms they were seeking:

We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Twenty-five thousand colonists’ lives were the bricks and mortar that built this foundation of freedom, each one of them someone’s husband, father, son, brother, or in some cases, grandfather. In winning that brutal eight-year war, they willingly laid down their lives so today we might know what it means to live free.

Since that time, a monument to freedom has taken shape on that precious foundation. A monument constructed with the lives of men and women who died to maintain the way of life those pioneers so valiantly established. All across the world, brave Americans have fought and died to preserve our liberty… each casualty another stone slipped solemnly into place, binding seamlessly with those laid before it.

iest war in our history. In just four years, more than 600,000 Americans died at the hands of their own countrymen. The Union Army lost in excess of 360,000 men while the Confederate States numbered more than 258,000 dead.

Southern secession ripped the fabric of our union, and a horrific price was paid to mend the cloth of freedom, a price that is still felt 150 years later. Abraham Lincoln, who could also be considered a casualty of that war, could not have written a more fitting epitaph for himself and all the Union soldiers who died to preserve the Union when he spoke at Gettysburg:

“The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

As a country, we survived this devastating time and once again discovered that our strength lies in our unity. A physically and social-reconstructed South rejoined the Union, and the United States was whole once again.

The last full measure of devotion

The world looks to America

The Civil War was arguably our nation’s darkest hour. Internal turmoil that revolved around the antiquated social structure of Southern slavery and the argument over states rights versus federal authority led to the blood-

that turned the tide of war.

In World War I, more than 116,000 Americans died fighting Austria-Hungary and Germany, and in World War II, more than 400,000 brave soldiers died fighting Germany, Japan, and Italy. In both wars, especially evident in World War II, American bravery, technology, and ingenuity led the way to an allied victory.

President Franklin Roosevelt, recognizing the terrible price our nation paid for stepping forward to assist our allies, said this about war and its cost:

“I have seen war. I have seen war on land and sea. I have seen blood running from the wounded. I have seen men coughing out their gassed lungs. I have seen the dead in the mud. I have seen cities destroyed. I have seen 200 limping, exhausted men come out of line — the survivors of a regiment of 1,000 that went forward 48 hours before. I have seen children starving. I have seen the agony of mothers and wives. I hate war.”

Defending freedom around the world Eschewing the “safety” of isolationism, America has stood up to oppressive political doctrines from one corner of the globe to the other.

From 1950 to 1953, in what is sometimes known as “The Forgotten War,” more than 36,000 Americans died in the Korean conflict. This war was actually a United Nations policing action in response to an invasion of U.S.-backed South Korean by Russian-backed North Korea. Once again, Americans sacrificed their lives to preserve freedom for others.

The U.S. had limited and full involvement in The Vietnam War from 1950 to 1973.

During that conflict, which was similar to the Korean War in that it was fought to preserve the freedom of a country split between communist and capitalist governments, more than 58,000 American lives were lost.

John F. Kennedy, in his inaugural address in 1961, aptly voiced America’s ideology concerning the protection of our global neighbors:

“Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.”

The United States has since championed freedom worldwide in countries such as El Salvador, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Kuwait, Iraq, Somalia, and Afghanistan, to name a few.

During the Gulf War, the Iraq War, and the War on Terrorism, more than 12,000 American men and women have paid the ultimate price to establish freedom in the world. At any given minute of any given day, you will find Americans standing tall in the face of tyranny and oppression in virtually every country on Earth.

It is estimated that more than 1.3 million Americans have sacrificed their lives since 1775 to preserve and protect freedom worldwide. Their sacrifice has not been in vain.

Most of the countries of the world live free lives today thanks to them.

Today, many Americans feel the freedoms our brave warriors have provided us have come under attack from within our own borders. They feel a preponderance of rules and regulations threaten to strangle the freemarket economy that fuels our society. During such times we must look to the “United” in United States, we must work together to create viable solutions to problems such as healthcare, the economy, education, and the budget deficit. Solutions that don’t threaten the very freedoms our society is based on.

As media sources highlight our differences during this divisive election season, take time to reflect on the threads that bind us tightly together. Set political ideology aside and remember the ones who made this all possible, from those who laid the solid foundation to those who continue to build our ever-growing monument to freedom.

We must hearken once again to the words of the men who founded our great country and assure each heart that their heritage still today remains intact, written indelibly in the blood of those who died to preserve it — each and every one of us has the inalienable right to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.

World War II vets enjoy the ultimate honor

Donald Schlimgen experienced a white Christmas in December 1944, but there certainly wasn’t peace on earth. And holiday music did not fill the air. For him, the only sounds he heard that holiday season were the resonating staccato fire of German machine guns, the distant explosions of detonated land mines, and the thunderous roar of tank fire.

Schlimgen, a resident of Lady Lake, fought in the Battle of the Bulge as a soldier in the U.S. Army’s 87th “Acorn” Infantry Division. Battling both freezing temperatures and a hostile enemy proved to be the most trying moment of his life.

“Those were miserable conditions,” he recalls. “We were in subzero weather and knee-deep snow. I ended up losing some friends in that battle, and so many others suffered from frozen feet and had their limbs amputated. The man upstairs saved me on several occasions.”

Despite his heroic efforts to save the world from tyranny, Schlimgen returned to his home state of Wisconsin with little fanfare. There were no welcome-home parties and no parades of appreciation. He immediately accepted a job with the Wisconsin Telephone Company, where he was employed for 40 years.

“I pretty much came home and

forgot all about the war,” he says. “I had a job and soon after that started a family. The past had no place in my life anymore.”

More than six decades after returning home from his tour of duty, Schlimgen would finally be recognized and thanked for bravely serving his country. In May, he and 24 other local veterans were chosen to participate in The Villages Honor Flight’s inaugural trip to Washington, D.C. over Memorial Day weekend. During the one-day trip, veterans had an opportunity to see the World War II monument that honors them and 16 million other men and women who faithfully served their country from 1941 to 1945.

It was a thank-you 67 years in the making.

“To have shared this day with so many other deserving veterans is simply amazing,” says Schlimgen, 87.

“It was the trip of a lifetime.”

Quite an Honor The Villages Honor Flight was launched in 2011 to fly veterans free of charge to Washington, D.C. and allow them to visit several war memorials, as well as Arlington National Cemetery. After the founder stepped aside due to health reasons, United States Army veteran Mark Erdrich took over the responsibility and helped reorga-

nize the program. Erdrich and other key members of the organization — including Fran Into, Debbie Winters, Cheryl Courtright, Jim Schafer, and John Peters — worked tirelessly, spending endless hours recruiting volunteers, raising money, and planning the logistics of the trip.

For Erdrich, who serves as the chapter’s hub director, having a local Honor Flight chapter is important because approximately 1,000 World War II veterans are dying each day. Moreover,

many are unable to travel or lack the funds to go to Washington, D.C. and see the World War II Memorial, which was built in 2004.

“There were no celebrations or parades for most World War II veterans once they returned home from the war,” Erdrich says. “Through Honor Flight, we give them the homecoming they never enjoyed when they were younger. Also, since they spend the entire day with other World War II veterans, they feel more comfortable talking about their war experiences.

It is good they can open up like that because many of them have not talked about the war since it ended.”

The Villages Honor Flight chooses veterans who reside in Lake and Sumter counties, as well as south Marion County. Each veteran is paired with a guardian, who pays his or her own way for the privilege of being a caretaker. Guardians ensure veterans are safe at all times, while a medical team is present to address any health issues that may arise.

Villages Transportation provides free rides to and from Orlando International Airport. American Legion Post 347 donates their facilities and provides an Honor Guard, food, and beverages for the send-off and homecoming celebrations.

A Trip to Remember It is 4a.m.

Veterans and their guardians begin arriving at the American Legion Post 347 off Rolling Acres Road in Lady Lake. One of the veterans, Hal Urban,

wears the brown uniform he was issued the day he was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946. The medals and ribbons he earned are pinned to his jacket.

Before everyone boards a bus to Orlando International Airport, Lady Lake Police Chief Ed Nathanson addresses the veterans. “I see nothing but heroes in the crowd — past, present, and future. It is always a pleasure to honor our brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our country. The trip you are going on today is a fitting tribute to the sacrifice you made to make our country and the world a better place to live.”

Ruth Pittman, a Tavares resident who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, takes her seat and looks out the window. “Who would’ve thought all these people would be here this early?

This is unbelievable!” she says.

Two Lady Lake police officers on motorcycles escort the bus to the airport. “It’s a lot nicer when cops are in front of you instead of behind you,” jokes veteran Herb Gearhart, donning a brown U.S. Army hat.

Upon arrival at the airport, the veterans become the main attraction.

Among those greeting them are news media reporters who interview the veterans as they exit the bus. Also present is the Transportation Security Admin-

istration’s Color Guard team whose members proudly hoist flags representing each branch of the military.

As the veterans walk through the airport toward their gate, other air travelers stand up and welcome them with a thunderous applause. Some even approach the veterans to shake their hands and personally thank them for their service. This scene is patriotism at its finest: civilians conveying their gratitude for the freedom they enjoy to the heroes who made it possible.

The veterans, in turn, wave to their admiring fans. Their wrinklelined faces beam with pride, and their emotions range from joyful tears to stunned pride. Even for those veterans sitting in wheelchairs or walking with canes, there is a light in their eyes that time and age cannot dim.

“Just look at their faces; they are like kids at Christmastime,” says Joe Quinn, one of the guardians on the trip and a former U.S. Marine. “They’ve earned this moment.”

The vets board a Southwest Airlines plane and take off en route to Baltimore. During the plane ride, veterans such as Leo Champagne talk about the significance of seeing the memorial for the first time. Leo is a former U.S. Marine who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He enlisted at age 17.

“This is really an honor and hard to put into words,” he says. “I know some of my old military buddies will never have a chance to see the memorial, nor will the soldiers who did not survive the war. I am truly one of the fortunate ones.”

The veterans are greeted with similar fanfare when they arrive at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

In the Nation’s Capitol Veterans board a bus and receive a motorcycle escort during the 45-minute ride to Washington, D.C. The bus parks outside the World War II Memorial, which draws plenty of “wows” from the veterans. The beautiful memorial features 17-feet tall pillars, each one inscribed with the name of one of the 54 U.S. states and territories of 1945. Two fountains in the middle of the memorial shoot water 30 feet into the air.

“This is more spectacular than I could have ever imagined,” says a wide-eyed Giles DeWitt, another U.S. Marine who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima. “Knowing they built this memorial for us really touches my heart. This is one of the most magnificent sights I’ve ever laid eyes on.”

Donald Schlimgen wants to see

the pillar representing his home state of Wisconsin. His guardian, Marlene Ricco, pushes his wheelchair to the site. “This just gives me goose bumps,” says Schlimgen, proudly donning a hat with an “87th Infantry Division” logo that Ricco special-ordered for him. “I never thought I’d see this.”

The moment is equally emotional for Ricco, who is also a native of Wisconsin. Her father, Henry Peters, served in the U.S. Army and, like Schlimgen, fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He passed away three years ago.

“I miss him so much and wish he could be experiencing this moment with me,” says Ricco, who is wearing her father’s Purple Heart medal and a locket with his picture. “However, Donald is my surrogate father today, and I’m proud to be his guardian. I know my father would be proud.”

Of course, not all veterans are in a rush to see the memorial — and understandably so. Some veterans, such as Lee Cawley, are busy embracing family members who drove there from other

parts of the country to be with them on this special day. Among Cawley’s visitors are his daughter, Mary Lynn Mooney, his grandson, Ryan Fawley, and great-grandson, Andrew Trice, who all live in Richmond, Va. “Does it get any better than this?” asks Cawley, a resident of Lake Port Square in Leesburg. “I am on the trip of a lifetime, and my family members have decided to be part of this unique experience. I feel like I am in heaven!”

Another astonished veteran is Jim Frank. His sister, Mary Camp, and nephew, Mike, drove from Pennsylvania to share in this wonderful occasion.

“I talk to my brother each Sunday, but I am not able to see him as often as I would like,” says Camp. “I wasn’t going to miss this opportunity for anything. Jim and all the other veterans here today truly earned this moment.

They sacrificed so much, and I’m so proud of them all. They epitomize the true meaning of hero.”

In addition to the World War II Memorial, some of the veterans ven-

ture to the Korean War Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial. Later that day, the tour stops by the Iwo Jima Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, where veterans witness the famous “Changing of the Guard.” This impresses Pittman.

“Watching this makes me want to stand up straight and salute,” she says excitedly.

Coming home Later that evening, the veterans sit at Baltimore Washington International Airport waiting for their return flight to Orlando. Erdrich announces a surprise mail call — just like the veterans experienced during the war — and passes out packages to each veteran.

Inside them are letters written by local students, politicians, family members, and friends.

As Schlimgen reads through his letters, one in particular touches his heart.

It is written by a seventh-grade student.

“I thank you more than you can imagine for fighting for America to make it the outstanding country it is today,” the letter reads.

Choked up and teary-eyed, Schlimgen grabs a handkerchief from his pocket and wipes his eyes. “I cannot believe a little kid wrote something like that. I’d love to go to her school and visit her classroom.”

After a safe flight to Orlando International Airport, the Honor Flight team boards a bus en route to Lady Lake. The guardians seem exhausted, while the veterans, who are on an

emotional high, talk about the highlights from their day. Of course, there would be one more highlight to come.

Around midnight, the bus turns left on C.R. 466 and approaches American Legion Post 347. Darkness gives way to the flashing lights of police cars and fire trucks as nearly 300 people wait in the parking lot to welcome these heroes home. Firefighters, law enforcement officers, active servicemen and servicewomen are all part of the celebration. The Villages Cheerleaders, donning red outfits and shaking pompoms, cheer them on. Cameras flash as people capture the poignant moment.

Others wave American flags, hold up “Welcome Home” signs, and chant “USA! USA!” Among the festive, cheering crowd is Bobby Siddell, a Florida National Guardsman who is wearing a camouflage uniform and military boots.

“Both of my grandpas served in World War II; one was in the Marines and the other was in the Army,” he says. “They have both passed away, but coming here and joining in this celebration is my way of reconnecting with them and thanking all the World War II vets for their courage and sacrifice.”

Indeed, this was a long overdue thank-you, but for Schlimgen, it was certainly worth the wait.

“The entire trip was just unbelievable,” he says with deep emotion. “And to be able to experience it with other veterans made it that much better. This is a day I’ll never forget.”

The following veterans attended the May Honor Flight trip. We would like to thank them for their service and sacrifice.

Where every child is a STAR There is an old adage that says special moments don’t always come preplanned; they just happen.

For Dr. Sheila Smalley, that moment occurred as a 16-year-old freshman attending an orientation at Bethune-Cookman University. She heard the powerful story of how Dr. Mary McLeod, a child of former slaves, overcame oppressive segregation and poverty to become a civil rights leader, leading educator, and founder of the Daytona Normal and Industrial School for Negro Girls in 1904 (which later became Bethune-Cookman University). McLeod formed the college with $1.50 and five students. A woman of unbounded determination and faith, she grew the one-room school into a highly regarded university that has

enjoyed steady growth throughout the years.

Hearing this amazing tale of triumph over adversity touched Smalley’s heart and taught her about the power of the human spirit.

“I was mesmerized when I heard that,” she says. “I told myself and another student right then and there that one day I would open my own school. It would be a school where children of all races and regular and special-needs students would come and discover their God-given talents.”

Forty years later, that dream came true. In 2010, she officially opened the Humanities and Fine Arts Charter School, which is located on Lee Street in Leesburg. Just like in her vision, the school is home to an ethnically diverse

group of students who are indeed reaching their full potential.

“It’s amazing how things happen in life,” she says. “I was 16 when I had my dream, and it came to fruition at age 56.

I’m living proof that dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”

Blending art & education A native of Leesburg, Smalley earned a doctorate degree in special education from the University of Florida and minored in educational leadership. Her vast career in education includes serving as a Title 1 reading and math specialist, a principal at several elementary schools, and a director of a Catholic preschool. She was also an associate professor of exceptional student education

at Bethune-Cookman University and the University of Central Florida before retiring in 2002 to help her mother pastor Macedonia Church of the Living God in Leesburg.

While serving as assistant pastor of the church was fulfilling, the urge to one day open her own school still burned deeply inside her. So in 2009, she and her board members spent four months writing a charter that was eventually approved by the Lake County School Board.

“The Holy Spirit was telling me it was time to act on my dream,” she says.

“When the Holy Spirit prompts me to do something, I go forth because I know things will work out even in the midst of challenges.”

As of today, the school is home to 159 students from throughout Lake County who attend kindergarten through fourth grade. Next year, a fifth grade class will be added.

Unlike traditional schools, students do not learn primarily through lectures, note-taking, slides, and videos. Instead, dance, drama, music, and art are incorporated into the core academic curriculum. For instance, a teacher may use a chalkboard one day to teach students about multiplication. The following day, they may create a song or skit, complete an art project, or make up a dance to sharpen their multiplication skills and reinforce what they learned. Smalley says this makes the learning and teaching experience more enjoyable for both students and teachers.

“We refer to this as infusion of the arts,” she says. “Studies have shown that students who are introduced to arts and humanities at an early age perform exceptionally well on college entrance exams. We teach our students to think at a high level and think outside the box. We are also challenging both hemispheres of their brains — the cognitive and creative sides.”

While each student is introduced to all artistic mediums, they also select a major, or a special area of interest. Majors include music classes with instruments (piano, violin, guitar, drums, and flute), dance (ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and

African folklore), art, drama, and public speaking. The 50-minute special interest classes are taught each Wednesday.

“We give aptitude tests to our students to find out which area of art they like best,” Smalley says. “We also invite people from the community into the classroom who have careers in or have a special knack for those particular areas.

We are always looking for more volunteers who would like to be part of our interest groups.”

The humanities aspect of the curriculum focuses on cultures and traditions of other countries. Students also learn about influential historical figures. “We want our students to know there are more similarities with people of other countries than there are differences,” she says. “We want to celebrate those differences.”

Students are required to wear school uniforms, which consist of a T-shirt with the school logo and khaki pants, shorts, or skirts. They must wear either white or black tennis shoes. “I feel it is important to dress alike so there are no lines of demarcation between children who come from upper- and lower-income homes,” she says.

Lessons in creativity Smalley has assembled a closeknit, energetic, and passionate group of teachers who use art as a powerful teaching tool in their classrooms. They share Smalley’s enthusiasm toward education. Perhaps first-grade teacher Meghan Baptiste sums it up best. “We’re all here to fulfill Dr. Smalley’s dream.”

Baptiste loves being part of the school family. During the 2010–2011 academic school year, she drove to and from Gainesville five days a week. Baptiste, who began her teaching career at a public school, says Smalley gives her “freedom to think outside the box and teach the way I want to.” That was certainly evident when her students learned about Thanksgiving.

“We created outfits out of paper bags and let our kids dress up as Native Americans and Pilgrims,” she says. “We then put on a show about Thanksgiving, which made it more real to the kids

and allowed them to better understand what was being taught.”

Fourth-grade teacher Mona Hill also sees the value of integrating arts into classroom instruction. When she introduces students to new vocabulary words, her students gather in small groups and perform skits in front of the class to act out the meaning of the word.

“In my opinion, doing things like this are more effective ways for children to learn and brings a little bit of fun into subject matter they may otherwise find uninteresting. It also helps demonstrate that they understand what I’m teaching. Our method of teaching here is very beneficial to students because we cater to kids of all learning styles. Some people are visual learners, some are auditory learners, and others are handson learners.”

Art teacher Semeion Howard is equally creative in the classroom. Oftentimes, she plays Mozart in the background while her students are painting or taking tests.

“That sets the tone and environment,” says Howard, a 1999 graduate of Leesburg High School. “I begin each class reinforcing the students, telling them who they are and what they can be. I push them to the next level.”

Dreams do come true Smalley has strategically placed two pictures in her office so they are in her line of sight at all times. One is an illustration of Dr. Mary McLeod, and the other is a portrait of five smiling children representing various races.

“These pictures keep me front and centered and are a daily reminder of why we are here, which is to educate a diverse group of children so they can maximize their talents to the fullest. I live and breathe diversity.”

Dr. Smalley’s dream can be seen in the eyes of the children she teaches. It can be heard in their laughter, felt in their dance, and is carried along on each note they play. Her dream has become their reality as children of all races and social backgrounds share a love of life, learning, and an appreciation of the beauty God has given us.

Known as a diverse medium that offers remarkably rich hues and endless possibilities, pastel has exploded in popularity over recent years and is slowly gaining more respect in the modern-day art world. But on the local art scene here in Lake County, pastel has garnered its own bit of notoriety thanks to the Pastel Society of Central Florida.

This association of amazingly talented artists boasts more than 60 active members. “We have a great group,” says Suzanne Zielinski, president and one of the founding members of the organization. “We have people who come from all over. There are members from Inverness, Daytona Beach, Maitland, Orlando, Gainesville… we even have winter residents.

We have a couple that comes every year from Canada. We are very pleased with how we have grown.”

The Leesburg-based group first formed in June 2010, after Zielinski and her good friend, Donna Tweedle, decided to make good on an idea they had batted around for years. “The closest pastel groups were in Tampa and northern Florida, but there was nothing here for local artists,” says Zielinski. “We talked about forming our own for a few years. Then one day, we just decided to do it.”

As members of the Leesburg Art Association, the women began spreading the news about their newlyformed pastels group. And with an extra boost from Internet and newspaper advertising, the word got out and

by September 2010, the group had roughly 30 members. By winter of the same year, they were able to organize their first-ever art show.

Peggy Coven, vice president, has been with the group for nearly two years, but she has been a pastel por-

trait artist for 35 years. When she first began using pastels, it was unusual because many artists shied away from them. “I picked them because you can use all types of paper and surfaces to get different looks. Pastels have such a wide range of impressions and color.

That’s why I love it,” she says.

At one time before impressionism became a major art movement in the late 1800s, pastels were only used in pre-painting drawings and sketching. However, pastel painting eventually gained recognition because of forward-thinking, celebrated pastelists such as Edgar Degas and Mary Cassatt, who embraced the medium’s impeccable range.

Nevertheless, before pastels underwent a contemporary renaissance, Coven says artists wouldn’t touch them. “When I first started, I chose pastels, but there weren’t that many artists using them. I searched all over for a group I could join, but never came across one,” she says. “I found out about this group when I saw a flyer in the mall. I vaguely knew Tweedle, and I knew if she was associated with it then it had to be a class act.

There is fantastic talent in this group.

It’s no small deal. This is big for Lake County.”

Though pastels have now been recognized as an art medium for quite some time, there has been a recent push by pastelists to educate others on how pastels differ from other dry mediums like crayons and chalk and have it recognized as painting instead of drawing.

“Some will say, ‘Is this watercolor?” and I will tell them, ‘No, it’s pastels.’ Then people will call it chalk, but I have to remind them it is pastels.

Some people have said it’s not painting, it is coloring. People don’t quite

understand it, but I don’t really care as long as they love it,” says Zielinski.

To give pastel art more exposure on a regional level, the Pastel Society of Central Florida holds two shows every year — one in the spring and one in the winter. Presently, Zielinksi says they are gearing up for their next big show, which is slated to open December 10, at the Leesburg Public Library.

“It is a big show. When you go in, you will see it is stiff competition.

There’s a lot of talent on the walls, and I think having the show really puts pastel art on the map,” says Coven.

They also host a number of workshops and demonstrations throughout the year where they bring in internationally recognized pastelists to share their expertise — a tremendous perk of being a member of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS).

During a typical monthly meeting, members bring in extra materials to share and go through the typical meeting formalities such as reading minutes from the last meeting and discussing new business and old business. But the members make sure to keep it short so they can spend the larger portion of their time together watching artist demonstrations, listening to a guest speaker, or doing a “paint-around” where a piece is rotated easel to easel as each person adds their own special touch to the painting. And sometimes they take art to the great Florida outdoors for magnificent landscape painting during plein air outings.

Residents of Lake and Sumter counties who receive treatment at LifeStream Behavioral Center do not walk away from their troubles. They simply become creative with them.

Clients use a camera to create striking photographs, a brush to produce beautiful paintings, tools to generate dazzling displays of woodwork, and a pen to write and convey hidden feelings.

Ultimately, they come away with more than something to frame or hang on the wall.

They are benefiting through self-expression, self-discovery, and emotional growth. And, most importantly, they are healing.

“The arts are a very therapeutic way of healing,” says Sherry Olszanski, vice president of development and marketing at LifeStream. “Arts reduce stress, loneliness, anxiety, and perception of pain.”

A healing touch LifeStream treats clients who deal with severe problems such as trauma, homelessness, depression, addiction, and loss. In an effort to help these clients regain hope and develop effective coping skills, the organization formed CreativeStream in 2008. One year later, the program gained membership in the Society for Arts in Healthcare, which is headquartered in Washington, D.C. “We have found that being involved in arts helps ease the fears and worries of our clients and helps them express their inner-self,” Olszanski says.

“It also allows them to enhance their creativity and thus feel better about themselves.”

In October, their creativity was on full display at the Leesburg Center for the Arts, which hosted a juried show called Art of Hope for LifeStream clients to exhibit their artwork. These artists poured their soul into their projects and created beautiful

paintings, sculptures, woodcarvings, ceramics, and photography. More than 200 people attended the opening reception.

“They were judged and went through the same process as anyone would who displays their work in an art exhibit,” Olszanski says. “This was a major accomplishment for our clients and goes a long way in helping them re-integrate into society.”

In addition to having their work exhibited, clients also have an opportunity to work alongside local professional artists who visit LifeStream facilities. They learn drama and theatre from actors and actresses at Melon Patch Players, photography from Akers Media Group, and dancing from local instructor Jenenne Valentino-Bottaro.

“It’s really fantastic that they can express themselves in ways they never thought were possible,” says Fred Lopez, chief photographer of Akers Media. “It is a lot of fun to see them embrace the camera, learn the camera, and communicate with the camera. Being a professional photographer, it is amazing how teaching this class has enriched my own life. Seeing them get a camera in hand reminds me of how excited I was when I purchased my first camera.”

Olszanski encourages other local artists to become involved in the CreativeStream program.

Like Lopez, they will likely receive more than they give.

“We are also in need of art supplies and would love to form community partnerships with artists and companies who can help us in any way,” says Olszanski.

The simple stroke of a brush goes a long way in lifting spirits, enriching souls, and allowing the healing process to begin.

work (of art) Set in the creative epicenter of DeLand’s arts and culture scene, the Florida Museum of Women Artists shines a brilliant light on the contributions of women to the art world. The museum proudly holds the distinction of being the only venue in the southeast United States that showcases all forms of artistic disciplines solely created by women.

Executive Director Crystal Recktenwald has been with the museum for a little over a year. “Our mission is to identify and promote women artists and educate the public about women in the arts. One of the best things we can focus on is advocating for women through the arts,” she says. “I’m proud to be a part of it.”

This month marks the museum’s three-year anniversary.

Housed on the second floor of the historic downtown Miller/Fish Building, the 7,000-square-foot museum features three galleries, a museum shop, café, meeting/lecture space, and a curatorial.

With a background in business, Recktenwald says transitioning from a male-dominated career to something that aggressively seeks to highlight and empower women has been a refreshing change of pace. “I say I never have a bad day in the office,” she says with a laugh.

At the Florida Museum for Women Artists, there is a conscious effort to display contemporary art work that is not only entertaining but educational, especially when it comes to women’s issues. For example, the museum recently presented the historically significant White Mountain Women exhibit.

Because the pieces were painted at a time when it was rare for a woman to paint anything other than portraiture or still life, some of the paintings don’t have signatures or were signed by the women’s husbands.

Then there are exhibits like the current fiber art show and the upcoming annual juried show, which highlights the works of highly talented women who work in a variety of mediums.

“We have five exhibits a year, and we try to make sure we keep it varied so there is always something for everyone to see,” says Recktenwald. “There’s always positive feedback. There are some people who come in with preconceived notions and are pleasantly surprised. Then there are others who feel it is a powerful thing to feature female artists.”

Sparking inspiration is why the Florida Museum of Women Artists strives to maintain an active role in pushing women’s creative talents to the forefront. While women are recognized as legitimate artists in today’s art world, the fight for full acknowledgement in the public eye still exists.

“I think there is always work to be done. We are definitely coming from behind. Speaking today, I think women are equally recognized among artists, but I still feel a responsibility to promote women artists to the general public,” she says.

At speaking engagements, Recktenwald says she has asked people in the audience to name some famous male artists.

Instantly, people call out names such as Salvador Dali, Jackson Pollock, Michelangelo, etc. However, if she asks people to name just six female artists, the room grows quiet.

“Someone may shout out Georgia O’Keeffe or Frida Kahlo, but that’s it,” she says. “That tells me there is still work to be done.”

The museum welcomes visitors from all over the state, country, and world. And since it is located in a town with a thriving arts and culture atmosphere, Recktenwald says people who visit can easily turn the day-trip into a long weekend stay where they can explore other museums, shops, and restaurants.

Nevertheless, making the trip would be worth it just to see the museum’s incredible testament to female creativity. “What people can expect to see is a facility filled with wonderful art,” says Recktenwald. “Anyone with an appreciation for art can find something that will make them smile or make them think…

Hanaka I am greeted with a traditional Japanese bow and smile upon entering Hanaka, an unassuming restaurant tucked quietly away in a small business plaza in Leesburg. The first thing I notice is the enticing smell of authentic Far East cuisine.

But before I order, I talk briefly with restaurant manager Ling, and she describes to me how this quaint establishment came into being.

“Our owner, Jason Huang, grew up in a family whose entire lives’ work was in the restaurant business, and he knew it was time to carry on the tradition,” she says. “He noticed Leesburg was lacking a sushi restaurant and saw the potential to create a new and exciting place for people to enjoy.”

Jason joins us and says, “We feel we have the best sushi in town — it is fresh, authentic, and made from the heart. All our sauces are also made from scratch, and we feel this attention to detail is what makes us exceptional.”

Before my meal, I am treated to a steaming carafe of sake. It can be served cold, but I am informed by staff that if I want an authentic Japanese experience, it should be served hot. It is a perfect beginning to my evening.

Ling begins my meal with a hot bowl of Miso soup. Its silky broth is perfectly salted, and the delicate mushrooms add just the right amount of texture to this simple yet delicious starter.

Next, I am served Mango Shrimp, which consists of four large tempura-battered tiger shrimp drizzled with a homemade mango puree that is excellent. It is luscious, sweet, and tart all at the same time, and I would highly recommend this appetizer to anyone looking to try something a little more exotic.

I am brought a tray of beautifully prepared sushi. The Tiger Roll, which is filled with salmon, avocado, and cucumber and then topped with tuna, eel sauce (don’t fret, it is not

made from eel!), and “Japanese crunchies,” is phenomenal. It is possibly the best sushi roll I have ever tasted.

The second roll, called the Jimmy Smith Roll, consists of tempura shrimp with cucumber, crab, and avocado. It is deep fried and topped with spicy mayonnaise. I need to tell you this: I am born and raised in the South and absolutely love anything deep-fried; combine that with my favorite food, sushi, and I am in heaven eating this roll. It is delicious.

No meal is complete without dessert and with the recommendation of staff, I agree — with absolutely no arm twisting — to try the tempura cheesecake. Now if you are on a diet, this may not be for you. However, if you feel that you only live once and indulging every now and then is actually good for the soul, then you need to order this dessert. It is creamy, velvety, warm on the outside, cool on the inside, and tastes wonderful.

I love to try new things, and this is one restaurant I will gladly be returning to with my husband, friends, bosses, and co-workers.

The Japanese courteously say — domo arigato gozaimasu. (Thank you very much.)

I say, “No. Thank you for this delightful experience.”

Girls Night In

Before my friends and I had children, we had a “Girls Night In” once a month. We would each take turns cooking and hosting our friends to dinner and drinks. This monthly get-together was usually planned about two days in advance, and 99.9 percent of the time, all eight of us were available.

Fast forward 10 years and a total of 16 ½ children later.

I am still blessed to have these same seven beautiful friends; however, instead of a once a month dinner, it’s more like a once-a-year, three-hour break from reality. The 48-hour notice has also turned into a necessary three-month heads up. So back in July when I offered to host a “Girls Night In” at my house, I quickly started planning the menu. Of course I didn’t want anything that takes me away from sipping

wine and laughing with my friends, so I planned a meal I could quickly make ahead of time. I decided on a delicious pot roast, a simple Caesar salad with a homemade dressing, and a fun chocolate berry martini to enjoy for dessert. Add fresh rolls from the bakery, and I have the perfect meal for a November dinner with friends.

As usual, the night was filled with lots of laughs, delicious food, yummy drinks, and wonderful friendship. However, even with a three-month notice, we were still missing one of our best friends. I’m not really sure why she couldn’t make it… I mean really… what is it with these girls who have 10-month-old triplets???

Slow-Cooked Pot Roast Yield: 6–8 Servings Prep Time: 20 Minutes Cook Time: 6 Hours

Pans/Utensils/Equipment Needed: Measuring cup Set of measuring spoons Cutting board Paring knife Medium mixing bowl Measuring cup Slow cooker Stove top skillet Ingredients: 3-pound oven roast, trimmed of fat 1 large onion, cut in large chunks 4 cups of baby carrots 1 cup of green bell peppers, seeded and diced 4 cups of fingerling potatoes 2 cups of beef broth 1 can cream of mushroom soup 2 teaspoons minced garlic 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 dry onion soup mix Instructions: • Brown the roast on all sides in a stovetop skillet.

• Place roast and vegetables in the slow cooker.

• In a small mixing bowl, combine and mix garlic, kosher salt, black pepper, and dry onion soup mix.

• Spread mix over the roast and vegetables.

• Pour beef broth and cream of mushroom soup on top of roast and vegetables.

• Cook on medium heat for six hours or until meat is tender.

Leftover Idea: Make a soup or stew with the leftover broth, veggies, and meat.

Simply dice up ingredients into small pieces and simmer in a stovetop pan for one hour. Add another cup of beef broth if needed. Add a basket of whole wheat biscuits to the meal, and you are ready to eat.

Simple Homemade Caesar Salad Yield: 8 servings Prep time: 15 minutes Chill time: 1 hour

Pans/Utensils/Equipment Needed: Measuring cup Set of measuring spoons Small sealable container Large mixing bowl Mixing spoons Ingredients: Salad: 2–3 medium heads of romaine lettuce ½ cup shredded Parmesan cheese ½ cup crumbled bacon Salad Dressing: ½ cup olive oil ¼ cup olive oil mayonnaise ¹⁄3 cup grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1 teaspoon honey mustard 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce ½ teaspoon black pepper Instructions: • To prepare the salad dressing, combine all dressing ingredients and mix well until thoroughly blended. Refrigerate for a minimum of one hour in a sealable container before serving.

• Rinse, pat dry, and discard wilted outer leaves of romaine lettuce.

• Using your hands, tear lettuce into chunks.

• Top with crumbled bacon and Parmesan cheese.

• When ready to serve, pour dressing on top of salad and mix well.

Any leftover dressing will keep for up to two weeks.

Pans/Utensils/Equipment Needed: Small mixing bowl, microwave safe Measuring cup Mixing spoon Pitcher with lid Set of measuring spoons Medium sized plate Eight cocktail toothpicks Eight martini glasses Ingredients: Garnish: ½ cup semi-sweet chocolates 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup fresh blackberries, diced strawberries, and raspberries Martini: 1 cup berry-flavored vodka ½ cup Baileys Irish Crème ½ cup Cream de Cacao 1 cup ice Instructions: Garnish Preparation: • In a microwave safe bowl, combine chocolate and butter.

• Microwave for 1–2 minutes on LOW setting until chocolate and butter are fully melted.

• Mix well.

• Carefully dip berries halfway in melted chocolate and set on a plate. Let berries cool in fridge.

• Once chocolate has cooled and hardened, put multiple berries on each toothpick.

• Cover and place in refrigerator until ready to serve.

Martini Preparation: • In a drink pitcher, combine all drink ingredients and mix well.

• Using the pitcher lid or a drink strainer, pour martini mix into martini glasses.

• Garnish with chocolate covered berries and enjoy!

The sloping vineyards, charming villages, and medieval castles in France’s Bourgogne region are a photographer’s dream. But it is the Pinot Noir grape that has made the region — known as Burgundy to most Americans — the ultimate destination for wine lovers.

A few kilometers south of Burgundy’s capital city of Dijon, unobtrusive signs appear indicating the road just off Route N74 is no ordinary wine trail but rather the Route des Grand Crus. The narrow road hugs the east-facing slope of the Côte d’Or limestone ridge and leads to some of the greatest names in Burgundy wines, including Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, Romanée-Conti, and more.

Considered the heart of the wine-producing region, the Côte d’Or — or “slope of gold” — extends for 60 kilometers and is divided into two sections. The northern half, the Côte de Nuits, runs from Dijon to the community of NuitsSaint-George and produces mostly red wine. The southern Côte de Beaune produces both reds and whites. Wines get their distinctive tastes and aromas from the different terroirs, especially soil and climate. In Burgundy, that means limestone.

“Without limestone, you can’t produce good Burgundy,” said winemaker Elohim Balest as he picked up a handful of rocky dirt. “And you must understand the soil to make good wine.”

A young Frenchman who speaks fluent English, Elohim grew up in Nuits-Saint-George, an area with a long viticulture history that began with the Romans. In the early 1700s, the town’s wines were recommended to King Louis XIV for their medicinal qualities, which turned out to be an 18th century marketing coup for Côte de Nuits wine merchants. Today, the earthy Burgundies are still among the world’s most highly regarded wines, as well as some of the most expensive.

Burgundy’s cool climate and chalky slopes create perfect growing conditions for the temperamental Pinot Noir grape. The degree of slope where grapes are grown makes a difference in how a wine tastes, but unpredictable weather, especially rain and hail, can be the biggest culprits as to whether or not a vintage will be good.

Elohim, who also operates a wine-tour company, plucked a grape from a Pinot Noir vine so his guests could experience a foreshadowing

of the 2012 vintage. I thought the sweet juice indicated the future wines will be exceptionally good. My guide, however, explained that more juice means diluted flavor.

“We’ve had rain all summer so we call this ‘the year of the winemaker,’ because it’s going to take all of a winemaker’s knowledge and talent to improve the quality of the wine,” Elohim later told me. “The rain makes the grapes too juicy, and that is contrary to quality. We need the concentration.”

Touring the Route des Grand Crus is different from tourist-driven U.S. wine trails. Most of the wineries are family-owned businesses and are not set up for drop-in tastings. Make appointments with the wineries you wish to visit, and you will find the winemakers friendly and willing to share their latest vintages. However, don’t expect lots of different vintages to be opened.

Burgundy produces far fewer bottles than other larger regions, such as Bordeaux, and demand for its elegant wines far exceeds supply. The 2011 harvest for all of Burgundy yielded only 207 million bottles, according to the Bureau Interprofessional de Vins de Bourgogne.

Understanding French wine appellations and classifications can be quite mystifying to even the most experienced oenophiles. In Burgundy, the basic classifications — Grand Cru, Premier, and Village — indicate just how valuable slopes are to the varietal. Grand cru wines come from vineyards grown high up on slopes where grapes get the most exposure to sun and the best drainage. Premier cru vines are in the middle or on less favorably exposed slopes although these vineyards are often protected from the elements by stone walls. Village wines are produced from the flat areas closer to the towns and villages, but don’t ignore just how delicious they can be — especially when you drink Burgundy in Burgundy.

“To find the real taste of Burgundy, you must visit the smaller wineries,” added Elohim. “We make wine to please ourselves.”

If you are feeling a little stressed or maybe a little grumpy, nothing puts things in perspective like putting one foot in front of the other.

One of the main reasons I recommend walking to my patients is that practically anyone of any fitness level can do it. Start slow if you have to. Walk to the mailbox and back. Then gradually increase your distance as you get stronger. Once around the block. Twice around the block.

Studies have shown that keeping to a fitness regimen is easier if you have help.

That means get others involved with you.

It is harder to skip out on a walk when someone else is counting on you. Join a walking club if you can. Don’t know of one?

Start a club of your own. Set a firm date and time for walks with a friend. You will be amazed at what something as simple as a walk in the neighborhood will do for you — and your heart.

HOME(S) FOR THE It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas — especially inside the homes being showcased in this year’s Mount Dora Christmas Tour of Homes. Six homes and one historic church will be lavishly decorated for the event, and participating homeowners will be decking their halls with much more than boughs of holly. Tour-goers can expect to see stunning nativity scenes, antique dolls, unique ornaments, and even a Christmas tree adorned with peacock feathers.

The event originated in 1977 and is hosted by the 130-member Women’s Committee of Fine Arts of Mount Dora, which encourages the appreciation and enrichment of music, art, dance, and drama in the community. Proceeds are used to provide scholarships to local high school students pursuing art careers. Last year, members of Women’s Committee of Fine Arts of Mount Dora awarded $14,000 in scholarship money to 13 students.

Chairwoman Carol Newton says the two-day event typically attracts 700 people who come from as far away as South Florida and Tampa. Many stay

the entire weekend so they can complete the tour in two days and spend more time in each home.

For some, the event is a wonderful way to catch the Christmas spirit. For others, it provides them with unique decorating ideas for their own homes.

“I recently received a call from a travel agent in South Florida who is bringing a busload of residents from the area to our event,” Newton says. “Another man called me last year wanting to make a donation to an arts group in Florida. He attended our tour and was so impressed that he donated $500 to the Women’s Committee of Fine Arts of Mount Dora.

People have a wonderful time and enjoy seeing the beautifully decorated homes.”

The tour takes place on December 1–2 from 11a.m. to 4p.m. both days. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased at the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce and the Tavares Chamber of Commerce.

Here is a sampling of what you will see inside the homes and church on this year’s tour: Rae and Bob Harris 2000 Juliette Drive Loch Leven Visitors who venture into this Mediterranean-style home will enjoy 10 themed Christmas trees, including a China doll tree, Santa tree, and a candy/toy tree in the kitchen. There will also be a French bonnetiere cabinet in the guest bedroom, and guests can enjoy Christmas refreshments in the beautiful lanai.

Barbara Zander 9021 St. Andrew’s Way. Village of St. Andrews, Mount Dora Country Club Shabby chic meets country French in this nicely decorated villa, which will feature many well-placed antiques as well as a renovated kitchen. Be sure to visit the doll room and see the owner’s collection of antique dolls and also numerous family dolls. A wonderful nativity scene will also be displayed.

Fransje Zucchero 822 Michigan Street Mossy Oaks Cottages This home, which has a distinct New England/European feel, is located on the only brick street in Mount Dora. Visitors will enjoy the house’s intricate details,

such as vintage hardware, mantels, a metal roof, and leaded glass. They’ll also enjoy the homeowner’s collection of old toys, dolls, and quilts that are attractively displayed.

Sue and Bill Ray 21640 State Road 44 Ebens Bend Drive (Ebens Bend Grove) This 5,000 square-foot, energy-efficient home is constructed with foam blocks of insulated concrete forms. Tour-goers will see many interesting items, including a Hoosier cabinet with Blue Willow pottery, a dining room table built by the owner, antiques in the loft area, and stuffed animals from hunting expeditions.

Margery and John Prentice 631 High Point Drive High Point There is no shortage of artistic ability is this home, which features contemporary art and traditional antiques. See Jacqueline Bomboy’s hand-hooked rugs, lamp work by Canadian artist Leslie Winemaker, and pottery by Martin Cushman. In addition, visitors are sure to enjoy the 77 plant species found in the screened lanai garden.

Jane and John Dennie 19142 Park Place Boulevard Park Place A snowman scene in the study and an angel/flower tree in the living room will lead you into the Great Room, where you will see a nine-foot tall Christmas tree adorned with peacock feathers.

This home will also feature an inviting outside display, and guests will enjoy the beautiful pool and lanai area.

Congregational Church 650 N. Donnelly Street Those who visit this historic church will be intrigued by the white siding, a bell tower steeple, and glorious gardens.

“The Church of a Pilgrim People” was founded by folks coming to Mount Dora from New England in the late 1800s. This picture-postcard church building, featuring New England-style construction, was erected in 1887.

“Go west young man. Haven’t you been told? California’s full of whiskey, women, and gold.”

Really? At least that is what Toby Keith sang in his 1993 hit song Should’ve Been a Cowboy. Those things would be enough for any man to make a beeline toward the Pacific, right?

In August 2010, I decided to heed his advice and made my first trip to the Golden State. More specifically, I visited scenic San Diego. It was well worth the trip. The beautiful sunsets at Mission Bay Park, the sight of colorful sailboats on the San Diego Bay, and the pleasant climate all make this a wonderful city to visit.

Admittedly, I only had six vacation days and split my time between San Diego and Las Vegas. (The drive through the Mohave Desert is quite an experience in itself, but that is another story for another time.) There simply was not enough time to take in some of the bigger attractions such as SeaWorld. But hey, I can see Shamu in Orlando.

The things I did do, though, were enough to make me want to go back. If I could do it all over again, I would have skipped the bright lights and slot machines

of Vegas and spent all six marvelous days in San Diego.

OUT AND ABOUT The first thing you notice about San Diego is that you are no longer in hot, sweaty, sticky Florida. When we arrived, the temperature was 75 degrees, and this was in August! Actually, the average year-round daily temperature is 70 degrees. With such amazing weather, it would be tempting to move out there.

Unfortunately, the cost of living quickly puts a damper on that little dream.

Since it was not scorching hot, I decided the best way to explore this city was taking a two-hour narrated boat tour through San Diego Bay. That was a more logical option than trying to navigate unfamiliar highways. I sat atop the boat’s open-air sky deck, which provided me with spectacular views of sea lions, a Navy SEAL base, and fighter planes roaring overhead. The tour also takes visitors under the famous 200-foot-tall, 2.2-mile-long Coronado Bridge, which opened in 1969 and is widely known for its distinctive curve. Because of San Diego’s vast military presence, you see large Navy aircraft carriers and submarines

docked along the harbor. Last but certainly not least, you will also receive a glimpse of the Hotel Del Coronado, which has hosted famous guests such as Marilyn Monroe and Charles Lindbergh.

After the tour, I drove to Mission Beach. It wasn’t the mighty Pacific Ocean waves that first caught my attention but rather a beachfront amusement park.

Belmont Park, as it is named, opened in 1925 and is a charming place that features rides, miniature golf, and plenty of arcade games. Being an avid roller coaster enthusiast, I could not resist riding on the Giant Dipper, a wooden roller coaster with

A Tribute to Max Max died at only nine years of age — but he lived a full life, bringing happiness and sharing love with countless people. For most, nine years isn’t a long time, but for a beautiful yellow Labrador retriever like Max, it was almost forever. Max belonged to — no, Max was a friend and constant companion of — Dr. Cesar Euribe. Whenever patients came in to Central Florida Pain Management to be treated by Dr. Euribe, Max was there to greet them. He never met a stranger, walking from room to room to share a bit of himself with everyone.

Max was the perfect addition to a pain clinic. His presence made life, and the pain that accompanies it, bearable for many suffering people. He seemed to know just what each person needed, and he was more than willing to share his healing love. A soft nuzzle, a wagging tail, and beautiful brown eyes full of love endeared him to virtually everyone he met. For many of the clinic’s patients, Max’s presence was a way of life, as Dr. Euribe had brought him to the clinic daily since he was a puppy. canine diabetes Max died due to complications from canine diabetes.

Canine diabetes occurs when there is a deficiency of insulin in a dog’s body. The pancreas no longer produces enough of the hormone to bind with the glucose in the animal’s bloodstream in order to deliver it to cells throughout the body.

Glucose levels in the bloodstream rise and begin to affect the dog in several ways. Excess urination, an effort by the body to rid itself of excess glucose, may be the first sign. Excess urination may lead to excess thirst. If your dog urinates and/or drinks water excessively and has unexplained weight loss, have him or her checked by your veterinarian.

The treatment for canine diabetes is similar to that for diabetes in humans: subcutaneous injections of insulin once or twice daily, plenty of exercise, a specially prepared diet served at the same time each day, and careful monitoring of symptoms.
