The BIG Re-think Tectonic Materiality of Interior Elements

Master Tutor: Prof. Kireet Patel

Studio Tutors: Rishav Jain, Aparajita Basu

Assistants: Jay Odharia, Jhanavi Parikh

Brief Outline:

The Big Rethink is a series of postgraduate interior design studios focused on developing a multitude of notions, approaches, positions and arguments within the interior design field.

This semester, the fourth one in the series, the studio challenges the concept of Tectonic Materiality of interior elements. It offers an opportunity to develop a design position in different contexts by questioning preconceived notions of interior design. It emphasizes the relationship between Interior elements and tectonic materiality through experience, organization and construction. The studio focuses on representing experiential and ephemeral qualities, planning and organising strategies, detailing and construction techniques, exploring the relationship of interior elements and tectonic materiality.

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this studio unit, the student will be able to:

Ability to develop a systematic argument/position/approach on the interdependence between interior techniques and practice. Ability to translate/represent the design argument/position/ approach through 3- dimensional and material based outcomes. Ability to organize and evaluate the programmatic and pragmatic potential of derived design position.

Ability to build a design vocabulary and test it through the selected context (site/program).

Week 01-04 | Design Boot-Camp Process:

Inspired by the subtlety and sobriety of Japanese craftsmanship, with a serene and monochromatic atmosphere, the project seeks to emphasize the scale of the space with two suspended elements made of oak wood. Its texture and monumental expression evoke the association of the construction of Samurai armour, especially an armour called dō. One of these elements frames a take-out food space called grab & go, and the largest one stands as a radial fireplace on the main teppanyaki table. Both are transformed into light objects that define and delimit the two poles of the restaurant with their scale.

Familiarising - “Know it more through - Optimization”

Abstraction through optimization

The through and though dissection of the interior elements in terms of their performtive behaviour gives more idea about the optimization from exaction to abstraction.

Keeping in mind the essence of the project and the nature of the environment , we extracted the core ideology behind the design and through the lens of specialization we deduced several products from multiple factor.

This gave us the calculated abstraction of the interior project.

Process:

The methodology for deriving the hpothesis starts with dissecting several modern interior design projects in it’s element as image,Element as program,Notion of space,Idea of volume,System of volume,Elemental configuration and then deriving a X x Y statement at the end.

This Statement is furthur put into a grid with statements fom other projects under the same pipeline and then this produces a final deduced statement which the Hypothesis which needs to be prven in 3 roles by us.

Carrying the methodology furthur we started the dissecting the atributes for CEPT FA. Dealing with a such a legendary site, our prime focus was to preserve its authenticity and its essence with utmost sincerety and conciousness.

Given the two sites Sagara basement anf FA double height we analyzed both of them first with the visual attributes and then the factoral qualities emerging out of the product of two or more qualities.

This empowered us to design the space making elements generated out of the site.

Process:

Sagara basement as a site is a whole new spectrum of possibilities even being a part of the same building.

The site which is a passageway froms a nice framing for the north lawns, the central glazed kota being the single reflective surface stiches the environment with the interior.

The junctions being mutually perpendicular to each other allowed us to play with the rectilinear modules as a unit and then modulating and orienting it furthur as Interior space making elements.

Divya Shanti Campus Flying Elephant Studio Bangalore

Process:

The soutth east side of the existing building recieves the direct sunlight through a series of louvres which casts strong staggered shadows on the floor. Taking this idea foreword I chose to complement the existing character of th site by furthur enhancing it by providing a panoramic wrap around ceiling which willSo the curved copper wall at the backdrop acts as a concave surface for all the direct shadows at the floor.

Inontrast my interior elements hanging from the ceiling having intermediate diffused acrylic light panels allows partial penetration of the light source.

This allows the copper surface to reflect the diffused light from the acrlic light panels and lit up the entire double height providing an immersive effect for the users at the night.

In the intermediate level of the double height a carved out space for davinci’s exhibit (THE WING) has been provided for it to suspend freely from the copper ceiling in order to provide a multi-level viewing experience for the users.

CRITERIA FOR MATERIAL SELECTION

Wood is used as a primay material for ceilling as well as for overall space. The individual modules are being made of wood and stainles steel. various orientations and combinations form my interior spaces through collective assemby justifying my Hypoth esis. The used of red tinted laquered glass has been wisely done on the pre existing reflective Kota stone defining the central datum point for the design. This justifies the inside outside relation of our space by reflecting the over all surrounding in the central part of the space. This combines the entire surrounding with our interior exhibition space thus establishing an intimate relation within each other.

HOW MATERIALS ARE BEING USED

Copper sheets add a luxe appeal when used as wall panelling or for cladding furniture. It is lustrous, has a long life and can endure most environments. “Its other properties like mallea bility and light weight make it highly popular amongst designers who make fur niture. Moreover, copper requires less maintenance and cleaning.

6 mm copper sheets have been used here in parts to form the curved profile.

Compatible Contradictions

A seamless Dominance

Process:

The design approach for Role 3 was rather contradictory and it questioned the notions of modern day exhibition dessign, complementing the mindset of Davinci during his period. The progressiveness of his mind can be seen in his dream machines. This inclination of his thaughts inspired me to orient my Role 3 design in that direction where i can challenege the stereotypical notions of Floor, ceiling, walls etc.

Criteria for material selection

The maintenance of furniture constructed from this material is minimal since it is not porous and resists stains as they do not penetrate the surface, making it easy to clean. Due to this advantage, and the absence of joints, Corian surfaces are great for minimal

Criteria for use of material

Corian comes in a variety of colours and models. When designing fixtures with Cori an, the cost varies depending on whether the furniture is straight, such as the pro fessionally-designed one in this image, or if it has curves, special design features or unusual widths. Even so, the price of the material is in the average-high range, but is more reasonable if we opt for standard sizes, for example, by choosing worktops with 60 cm width. While its cost is the main handicap of this material, if you consid er that its warranty is 10 years, it is worth the investment.

How the materials are being used

Used as a top surface for the morphed elements. it is applied on top of a layer of plexiply which is suported through a 12 mm ply waffle truss. The greatest advan tage Corian presents is its versatility in interior design. The moldable material can be designed to make the curvaceous piece of furniture you want for your home or workplace. The object has certain transparency to allow light to pass through and appear illuminated. This property is held by very materials like onyx. The mate rial is relatively stain-resistant and can be cleaned with great ease by using some soap and water. While the material is readily available in the market in pre-cut and pre-designed forms, it can be tailored to suit the requirements of the design.

Forward:

Touching others’ lives, expanding the circles of our concern to include others, being authentic, and always being receiving this is what we all do as Architects and designers. This book tells how we architects and designers perceive nature. Taking risks is what I have always admired in a person as an Architect. And this book shows the approaches and design challenges that define risktaking.

In my book elements of Architecture, I tried to dissect the core principles of design i.e., Point, line, plane & volume. It’s good to see someone taking the idea forward and further exploring new paradigms.

Moreover, writing for someone who draws heavy inspiration from the works that have inspired me throughout my journey feels like I am just adding another page to my diary.

As the progressive erasure of borders lead by economic forces, “Mutations” reflects on the transformations that the acceleration of these ideas and executions have necessity rather than experimentation. Introduced by charts and statistics on global urbanization and a series of essays describing the nature of the changes operating in our cities and in our economies, the book is organized as a highly illustrated atlas/surveys of a contemporary adaptation of this ideology.

India is a country that needs an entirely unique set of wireframing and ideation of design ideas and their execution. His approach is a stepping stone into this highly adaptive and progressive demography.

Finally, I would say this is modern-day benchmark-setting work of a progressive mind which knows what it is doing.
