sorority sister can be described in many ways; a nd of sisters united by a bond, solidarity, shared w points, shared goals and experiences In bruary 1973, thirteen strong-minded, sisters of pha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated were inspired to organize a graduate chapter in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The purpose for this desired unity was to continue the perpetuation of sisterhood and service to mankind

Under the name “The Kalamazoo Graduate AKA Women”, the organization set goals towards serving the community and becoming a recognized official chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. This group met the latter specifications through working with guidelines from the national office of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. under the leadership of our Regional Director, Dr Eva Evans On October 27, 1973, this organization was chartered as an official graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and given the name Iota Sigma Omega

Charter members were: * Jacquelyn Barham, Janet Benson, Ruth Burton, Emily Dawson, Brenda Earhart, * Mary Harper, Jacqueline Jackson, Bertha Morgan, Gala O’KeKe, Diane Smith Petway, Jean Phillips, Gloria Quinney, Juliette Smith, Joye Williams and Johnnie Wilhite. (*Ivy beyond the wall)

We’re proud of our rich heritage and connection to L Pearl Mitchell, third Supreme Basileus, who established the Douglas Community Association in Kalamazoo The chapter was host to the Great Lakes Regional conference in 1984. Iota Sigma Omega continues to stand on the shoulders of outstanding leadership of its charter members. We also pay respect for the former leaders who have held high the touch of this outstanding sisterhood

The heart and spirit of Alpha Kappa Alpha and the sorors of Iota Sigma Omega are its international programs. Over the years they have expanded the programs and developed numerous partnerships with other organization in and around the Kalamazoo community.
