Growing Community -

A mixed residential neighborhood

A Growing Community

Health

This project, located along the edge of Kansas Expressway investigated the major disconnectivity issues along the neighborhood’s western edge. Kansas Expressway has created a physical boundary which is cutting off and isolating the western neighborhoods. The surrounding area has now become unwalkable, unsafe, and there is a lack of urban connectivity. My project aims to increase the health, safety, interaction, and sustainability of the neighborhood to revitalize the economic, social, and environmental functionality of the community.

Interaction

5 Sustainability

1. Four rectangular forms relate to the site context and the surrounding neighbhoorhoods. This form plays with the linear pattern of the neighboorhoods and allows for access from both streets on the site.

2. The heights of each form is staggered to increase the amount of views for the residents of the aparments. The height increases as the forms get closer to the taller industrial buildings.

3. The edges of each form are then brought down to ground level to create an open connection to the surrounding neighborhoods on both sides. By alternating the slope is increases the views.

Chicago Fireboat House

11

Chicago Fireboat House This site, located south of Willis Tower on the Chicago River, is the stopping point of the Chicago River Walk. The Fireboat House is menat to connect, educate, and help the community surrouding it along with creating a landmark on the River Walk. The Fireboat House is home to two companies, land and water. The program also includes a Batalion and a community space.

Concept

To create an inviting and functional Fireboat House while maintaining the integrity of the River. The firehouse extends the Chicago River up and over to form the shape of the roof structure in order to connect to the river.

12

The shape of the roof represents the organic nature of the river announcing itself at the very front of the fireboat house. The slanted roof allows for a transition between the private space to the very public space
