We have strategic alliances and articulation arrangements with education institutions and organisations within New Zealand and in several main overseas markets. BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION ANNA MEDVEDEVA MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION From one extreme to another, Anna certainly travelled a long way to study at AIS. Born in Siberia, in northern Russia, she always knew that she wanted to explore new countries and seek new adventures. It was a copy of the AIS prospectus that she spotted at a Russian agency for international studies that caught her eye and set her on her journey abroad. Anna considered a few options, including Europe, Canada and Australia, but she had a particular interest in New Zealand having known of friends who had emigrated and made a life for themselves here. “I was interested in New Zealand because I knew that I’d be allowed to work while studying part-time here. I knew I could get a job here and support myself.” For Anna, being able to work and study at the same time were her key priorities. She already had a five-year bachelor degree in economics from the St Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance, and she wasn’t just starting out in her career. She knew there were opportunities abroad and was curious about how she could use her existing experience. “I now work for ANZ Bank as a relationship services manager in commercial banking, helping clients to structure their financing. I started as a commercial services officer – or bank teller, as we used to call them – in 2008. I’ve always worked at the bank while completing my MBA.” Along with being keen to use her overseas education and experience, Anna knew early on that she would have to gain New Zealand work experience and education in order to move up through the company. “Work experience is not enough. To be promoted at the bank you need to have a degree in finance or accounting, and education is a big part of how high up you can go.” Anna believes her AIS MBA has been a key part of where she is now in her career. Her role is in commercial banking, working with clients that have revenue turnover between one and five million dollars, helping to structure their financing. It is a position that enables her to combine all of her experience in marketing and customer service, along with her formal education in economics and business. “AIS was the best choice for me. It was affordable and I didn’t have to pay for textbooks. The MBA programme structure is really well designed and it enabled me to work while I studied. And most importantly, the teachers are amazing – their biggest asset if you ask me.”

HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT KAIXU SUN (EMMA) BACHELOR OF HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT In New Zealand we certainly love our coffee and our café culture. Emma is a great example of how this can open doors of opportunity that you may never have imagined. Coming from China in 2009 to gain overseas education, Emma is now a manager of a Columbus Coffee café in central Auckland. She manages six staff members along with all the day-to-day operations of a busy hospitality venue. Emma completed her BHM in 2014 and credits her AIS studies as a key factor in her rapid progression from part-time barista, to supervisor and now manager. “In the AIS programme we learned not just the theory of hospitality management – we were also given the opportunity to practise what we learned. For example, as part of our food and beverage paper, we had the option to organise a function. We had to calculate the budget, decide the menu, prepare gifts, and work with the kitchen staff to plan the menu. It was full-on, just like real life.” When asked why Emma chose AIS, her answer comes easily. “The AIS bachelor programme includes so many aspects of a hospitality career. We studied marketing, accounting, customer services, and employment. These are all things I need to know in my role as a manager now.” Having studied other programmes in New Zealand when she first arrived, including foundation studies and early childhood education, Emma was pleased to learn that she could cross-credit some of her completed studies and shorten her length of time in the classroom. “At AIS I was able to complete my studies quicker and get to work sooner. Not only that, but my studies and my work experience also helped me get a six-month internship position with Hyatt Hotels.” With all of this under her belt in such a short period of time, Emma has only just started. She has plans next to pursue studies at the master’s level in hospitality management.

Hospitality Management is a vibrant, diverse business sector that is growing year on year, both locally as well as globally. Consistent growth in international visitor numbers and spending is forecast by Tourism New Zealand, and hotel and airport expansion plans mean New Zealand is preparing for further growth in the tourism and hospitality industries. Alongside this growth, however, there exists a nationwide skills shortage and a lack of suitable candidates in the hospitality sector. For AIS students this creates a range of opportunities for work after graduation.

HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT

HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT 66% OF BUSINESSES SURVEYED HAVE ADVERTISED MANAGEMENT POSITIONS IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS.* The Hospitality Management programmes at AIS prepare students for a range of positions and levels of management in the hospitality sector by providing the skills and knowledge needed to understand this diverse industry, as well as giving them opportunities for hands-on experience within the sector. Through industry relationships, alumni members, and support from our in-house Student Job Search Centre, you will receive ongoing support and assistance in finding employment, while you study and when you graduate. The study options available cover everything from roles at an operational level to supervisory and managerial positions. You will learn the practical skills and knowledge that employers look for in the hospitality industry, gain a firm grasp of the basic principles of management and their application, and possibly advance into more supervisory and senior roles in hospitality operations. Depending on which study option you choose, you may also have the opportunity to complete an industry placement, enabling you to gain workplace experience first-hand, and direct access to ongoing employment opportunities. Options for study include: Diploma in Hospitality Operations (Level 5) Diploma in Hospitality Operations Management (Level 6) Bachelor of Hospitality Management (BHM) Graduate Diploma in Hospitality Management (GDHM) * Source: RANZ and AUT Hospitality Industry Report, 2014

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DMITRIY SABITOV GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Dmitriy completed his GDIT from AIS in 2011 and now works as a Developer for Foster Moore, a New Zealand-based global software company. Was gaining your GDIT a key to getting your job? “I did have some knowledge back from Russia, but I would say the main thing was that they saw I got my Graduate Diploma in software development.” When Dmitriy arrived in 2011 he possibly already had a strong enough CV to find a job in New Zealand. Having come from Russia with an education background in mathematics and strong work experience in programming and testing, Dmitriy was confident he could secure work in New Zealand even without completing more studies. But he also knew that there could be greater opportunities for him if he completed some domestic study. So he chose to pursue his GDIT at AIS to specialise further and to help open doors for him in New Zealand. Dmitriy considered a few study options, and eventually decided on AIS because of its more practical approach. “Other programmes were much more theoretical, much more just academic programmes whereas in AIS it was much more practical. I just haven’t really seen something as appropriate for me as in AIS.” Dmitriy now has New Zealand residency and plans on getting his Kiwi passport. He loves New Zealand and the lifestyle and choices it offers. “New Zealand is very relaxed and an easy-going country – that’s what I like. It’s not just about work, it’s about enjoying things like surfing and nature.” Would you recommend AIS to others? “For sure, especially if you already know what you want and just need a specialisation. Then AIS is a good choice because it’s good quality and value for money. It gives you enough knowledge and a good diploma to find a job.”

Studying Information Technology (IT) at AIS opens up a world of opportunities for our students. Our programmes are an excellent way to begin, or further develop, a successful IT career either in New Zealand or overseas. What this means, in short, is that New Zealand needs skilled IT professionals.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

ON AVERAGE, THERE ARE BETWEEN 2,000 AND 3,000 IT ROLES REGULARLY ADVERTISED IN NEW ZEALAND. To help students gain that extra advantage of New Zealand work experience, and qualify for many of these roles, we are able to offer some of our students internship opportunities. These have helped AIS students find well-paying jobs with attractive long-term career potential. Options for study include: Diploma in Information Technology (Level 5) Diploma in Information Technology (Level 6) Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) Graduate Diploma in Information Technology (GDIT) Graduates of degree-level programmes earn more (on average 30% more) than diploma graduates. Additionally, students with a Bachelor degree who intend on living and working in New Zealand can earn bonus immigration points. Students can gain cross-credits from previous study, and can choose to focus on: Software Development Computer Networks Information Systems All of our IT students are issued with their own laptop and receive free Microsoft software. Our BIT and GDIT programmes provide students with a pathway to postgraduate degree programmes, in particular the Masters programmes at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and Unitec Institute of Technology. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS EKTA BHOJWANI BACHELOR OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS A move overseas from Oman and starting again with her studies was just what Ekta needed after finding herself at a crossroads in life. Originally from India, she recently completed her chartered accountancy qualification which began with Bachelor of International Business (BIB) studies at AIS. Not only did Ekta complete her BIB, but she did it with straight A grades and several scholarships which came as a pleasant surprise, she says. “They were completely unexpected and a good bit of extra money to receive as a student. I was surprised because I didn’t think universities gave scholarships to international students.” Ekta now works as a management consultant for KPMG with their IT advisory team. Her ability to bring financial knowledge to the IT team is what sets her apart, she says. Her studies at AIS allowed her to develop her skills not just in finance, but in overall business capabilities like accounting, marketing and intercultural communication. “I rounded up my qualifications and made myself more sellable.” In addition, the international aspects of the BIB programme made her more attractive to a multi-national firm. “At the time, you don’t really know how you’re going to use what you’re studying. But now I can see that it opens your mind to working with people from different cultures, especially in today’s global market. So that’s fun – you don’t get set in your way of thinking and you constantly get to work with people from different countries and cultures.” Asked about why she decided on New Zealand as her destination, Ekta is honest in her response. “I just wanted to get away from it all, and my life back in Oman and India. New Zealand is the last bus stop on the planet.” However, in hindsight, it is this distance, she realises that makes the international business studies so relevant and valuable. Would she recommend AIS to others? “Absolutely. It’s given me the best start I could imagine. I came here with pretty much nothing really that I could sell to New Zealand, and it gave me a great place to start – friendly people, a warm friendly place when you’re a stranger to New Zealand. I would whole-heartedly recommend it. And all I would say is, give it your best shot and anything is possible. AIS will definitely help you go the distance if you’re just willing to put in the work.”

TOURISM MANAGEMENT RAHUL BALONI GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT Stepping out of his comfort zone and moving away from home was just what Rahul needed to figure out what he really wanted to do with his life. Having completed his bachelor degree in advertising/marketing and commerce in New Delhi, he followed the path expected of him and went to work in his father’s travel agency business. He also did some work in modelling and pursued another passion of his on the cricket pitch. But still, he felt like something was lacking. So he explored a move overseas – and it turned out to be exactly the change he needed. “I felt like I was just killing time, so I looked into what would help me from a business point of view. New Zealand seemed perfect. What attracted me was the 100% pure tourist destination appeal because I wanted to find work in the tourism industry.” Rahul now works as a Conference and Events Supervisor for Rydges Hotels. It is a position he moved into as a result of what was initially a short-term internship as part of his AIS studies. A one-week assignment turned into a longer part-time role, and then responsibilities as a supervisor with a team of 11 people. “The advice I would give other students is to mix the papers or courses you are studying. I took some tourism, some hospitality and some marketing courses – so I had more business knowledge and more opportunities.” Because of this approach to his studies and his career, Rahul says he now feels really free to do what he wants. He enjoys his work and loves New Zealand, all because of the choices he made at AIS. When asked what made AIS stand out for him he states two reasons. “First, the length of the programme suited me. I could complete my studies in a year and start looking for work. The other thing that was fantastic was the support from the teachers. They were very friendly and helpful. They were really amazing.”

CertTESOL MARTIN BLAYNEY CertTESOL Martin is a proud Kiwi who, after a couple of years teaching overseas, is happy to be home working in New Zealand. He is currently a full-time elementary-level teacher at the New Zealand Institute of Science and Technology. His students encompass a broad range of nationalities, ranging in age from their 20s to their 70s, so every day is varied and exciting. This variety suits his high-energy, enthusiastic style of teaching that Martin developed teaching for two years in Japan. He had been fascinated by the Japanese language and culture since secondary school, and subsequently earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in English and Japanese at the University of Auckland. Teaching for the first time overseas, Martin admits, “Teaching overseas was overwhelming. It was largely trial and error as it was my first teaching job. This was before I studied at AIS. I wish I had done my CertTESOL before I went to Japan.” When he returned from teaching in Japan, Martin’s studies at AIS gave him a huge amount of experience teaching in the classroom before venturing out into the workforce. “In the CertTESOL programme at AIS, every week we were teaching anywhere from 10 to 30 students. We then got feedback and suggestions for improvement from our peers and from three tutors. So there was lots of opportunity to learn and improve.” When he did start applying for work, it was AIS on his CV that got the attention of his current employer. “They saw that I had studied at AIS and knew straight away that I had enough practical experience.” “AIS was a great place for me to further my studies as I could start right away. I also had a huge amount of teamwork and support from the other students and the teachers when things got busy and stressful. And the institute has a great reputation with employers. As a result I have been able to find teaching positions at a few different places. I highly recommend it!”

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LAURA CASADIO ENGLISH LANGUAGE As you might expect from a teacher, when asked how she feels about her studies at AIS, Laura gives it a grade out of 10 – a perfect 10! Laura recently completed Upper Intermediate level English, and is looking forward to completing IELTS studies so she can become a fully registered New Zealand teacher. She has a master’s degree in preschool teaching from a university in Italy, so is looking forward to further advancing her career here in New Zealand. Laura chose AIS because it enabled her to study English with the visa she had, while looking for work. She is now a preschool teacher at an early childcare centre, and credits her English Language studies at AIS as the main reason she was able to find employment. “My grammar and speaking really improved during my time at AIS. There is an individual focus for each student and I received a lot of support. The class sizes were small so this helped a lot in getting attention from the teacher. My English teacher even checked my CV before I applied for my job and acted as my referee. My dream when I was in Italy is now being realised.”

KENJI MURAKAMI

MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION While completing his MBA qualification at AIS, Kenji Murakami was the first student to complete the newly introduced MBA Internship Pathway, working at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), one of the world’s largest auditing firms. During his internship, Kenji worked as part of the Financial Risk Management team at PwC. With over 10 years’ experience in an actuary role in Japan, Kenji was delighted at the opportunity to work with the PwC Financial Risk Management team as this allowed him to gain valuable insights into an actuary role in New Zealand as well as broaden his industry contacts within his field. “During my internship with PwC, I was able to acquire a lot of knowledge about the actuarial regulations in New Zealand, and my role in the team also allowed me to meet with a lot of other actuaries, including the President of the New Zealand Society of Actuaries (NZSA).”

There have been many situations where I’ve thought to myself ‘Hey, I learned that in the BIB’.”
