PARENTS ON CAMPUS: GUIDELINES FOR EMERGENCIES

General Guidelines

© Parents (and their visitors) are responsible for obeying the instructions from security staff or school administration during an emergency situation.

© Parents should allow the evacuation process of our students to proceed undisturbed.

© The soccer field is the safe assembly area which is commonly designated during fire evacuation.

© The soccer field has a specific area earmarked with a sign board for parents/visitors to assemble near the northwest corner of the field.

© In some situations, the school gym is the evacuation area. When this is the case, parents will be instructed to proceed there and are requested to gather near the sign board for parents near the northwest corner of the gym.

© Parents/visitors will not be permitted to move off campus while an emergency situation is in progress.

© In an emergency situation, parents should not use the elevators.

If there is a duck and cover situation (earthquake)

© Parents should take immediate cover under any available resource in the area.

© If no cover is available, they should move close to an interior wall and stay low to the ground and cover their head with arms.

© Once the shaking has stopped, parents should evacuate the building and proceed to the soccer field or other destination as directed by security staff.

© If there is a lockdown situation (unsafe to be outside of the buildings)

© Upon hearing of a lockdown, parents should secure themselves inside the nearest available room and lock the doors.

© Parents should stay in the same position until further instructions are communicated by the security staff.

General Information

As a Middle School, we provide excellent learning experiences, enriching Arts, Sports & Activities (ASA) programs, and a nurturing environment for our students to challenge themselves and grow. The programs offered in Grades Six through Eight are in alignment with our mission to foster courage, creativity, confidence and compassion. Our academic and co-curricular experiences provide students with opportunities to develop themselves as internationally minded learners and individuals. This foundation positions students to successfully transition to schools in their home country as well as to other international schools.

Our community embraces international diversity as we consist of students from about 30 different nationalities. In this rich setting, students learn skills for collaborating and developing relationships. We embrace our host country through connections with our community, interwoven into the Middle School experience through our service learning program and curricular connections. Through our Advisory Program, students explore their identity, build relationships, and focus on wellbeing. Our integrated EAL Program provides support and instruction to learn English while learning subject area content.

We strive to provide an academically challenging environment in order to foster intellectual curiosity and a sense of responsibility in our students. We offer an American curriculum with an international perspective. We focus on how to learn throughout our entire curriculum by modeling, teaching and facilitating reflection on Learning Habits. Technology is seamlessly incorporated into all subject areas and students celebrate their learning with their parents with endof-year portfolio presentations. Our Week Without Walls (WWW) experience builds our students’ independence, responsibility, and takes learning outside of the classroom.

To fully educate the whole child, we are committed to cultivating lifelong learners and balanced, globally minded citizens who are prepared to positively contribute in a dynamic and interconnected world. Our programming supports this belief by empowering students with the opportunity to choose from a variety of elective classes during the school day and participate in co-curricular activities. Through our co-curricular activities, our students are exposed to the ideas of others by engaging with students across grade levels, India, and our region.

The Middle School years are a time of transition and change as students grow physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively. We work as a community of faculty and staff in partnership with parents to ensure that there is a supportive environment for this development.

PARENT/HOME COMMUNICATION

Email

The School uses email extensively to communicate with parents and students. It is essential that parents provide the School with a working email address that is checked frequently. Parents should immediately report any change of address, email address or telephone number to the Admissions Office. Students are provided with a school email address that should be used in all communications with teachers and the school administration.

Principal’s Newsletter

The Head of School and the Middle School Principal update electronic newsletters weekly to keep parents informed of school and student events, and other relevant updates. These newsletters are vital communication links between parents and the School. These newsletters can also be accessed electronically via the AISC learning management system Schoology (a login is required).

Back to School Night

To encourage and facilitate parental understanding of school programs, an evening is set aside early in the school year for parents to visit their children’s classes and meet their teachers. This is an opportunity for teachers to explain the year’s program and content along with curricular goals and objectives for the classes. Parents are strongly urged to attend at all grade levels.

Web and Annual Calendars

The school Community Calendar announces school activities, parent meetings, school board meetings, etc. You can find it on our website on the Main Menu. The Annual Calendar which provides at-a-glance details can be found under Quick Links (Home>Community>Quick Links) on our website (www.aischennai. org).

Information Sessions

At various times throughout the year, the Principal, the Middle School Counselor, the IT Director, and other faculty members will host parent coffees and other information sessions for parents. Information on these sessions will be sent through the weekly newsletter to notify all parents.

School Website

The School provides information regarding academic and co-curricular programs on the school website, www.aischennai.org. The information on this website is available to the public.

PowerSchool

In addition to the school website, the School provides password-protected portals with information about the academic and co-curricular programs. PowerSchool provides parents with access to student grades, attendance, and report cards. PowerSchool can be accessed through PowerSchool public or from the “Quick Links” menu on our website. Parents will need to create their own account and link to their own children in order to follow their child’s academic progress in PowerSchool.

Schoology

Schoology is our learning management system (LMS). Schoology allows parents to access some of the same information contained in PowerSchool — grades, mid-term and semester reports — and in addition, parents can see digital class pages with homework assignments, learning materials, teacher comments, and club information for their children in the Middle School. While Schoology offers a digital calendar, we recommend Middle School students continue to keep track of projects and due dates using a student planner or Google calendar. Schoology can be accessed from the parent portal on the school website, or at aisc.schoology.com. You may log in with the password provided to you via email from the IT Office.
