NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

The American International School Chennai values the diversity in our community and is committed to providing an inclusive and equitable environment. All members of the community deserve to be treated with respect, protected from intimidation, harassment, and/or bullying, and free from discrimination on account of actual or perceived age, appearance, citizenship status, creed, color, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, gender identity, national origin or ancestry, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, size, socio-economic status, or weight.

SUPERVISION & SCHOOL HOURS

In general, AISC assumes responsibility for the safety of all students during school hours as well as after school and on weekends while participating in teacher-supervised co-curricular activities. All Middle School students are encouraged to participate in the wide variety of co-curricular activities that are offered before and after school and on the weekends.

Middle School students must not be on campus before 8:00 a.m. or after 3:45 p.m., unless they are in a school-organized activity and under the direct supervision of the instructor, under the direct supervision of their parents, or in the library under the supervision of a library staff member. Parents assume full responsibility for their child’s safety at school before 8:00 a.m., after 3:45 p.m., or on weekends and school holidays, except when the student is participating in a teacher-supervised school-sponsored activity.

AISC reserves the right to restrict participation in co-curricular activities if a student or parent is not willing to observe the above regulations.

Food Services

Food Services for students at AISC are provided by the Taj SATS and are available in the cafeteria and the I-Hub. Student identification cards are used to pay for items in both locations and can be recharged at the cashier’s window adjacent to the Madras Hall. We offer a rotating menu over the course of 30 days that include a selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indian, Asian, and Continental options, plus soups, a salad bar, and more. Lunch is served in the cafeteria for a 45-minute period, and the I-Hub is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; it is sometimes open later if there is a special event on campus. In striving to meet the AISC nutritional guidelines at lunch, students are served a balanced meal complete with fruit and dairy. In the I-Hub, prepackaged snacks and beverages are available to Middle School students that are in alignment with the AISC Nutrition Guidelines. AISC Nutrition Guidelines focus on limiting the amount of added sugar, added sodium, total calories, and certain fats that students are exposed to at school. Limited items that are not in alignment with the guidelines, such as ice cream bars, are available for purchase after 4:00 p.m. Feedback about Food Services can be directed to the Food Services Manager or the Principal.

Pre-Orders must be placed by 4:00 p.m. for the following day. Meals can be ordered for the whole week or month. Cancellations for pre-orders must be completed by 4:00 p.m. for the following day. If you are not able to cancel due to unavoidable circumstances please email foodservicesmanager@aischennai. org (Antony R, Food Services Manager) no later than 8.00 am on the same day.

School Rules

ID Badges

Please remember that to enter the campus, one must have an AISC ID badge. Students will be issued ID badges and are required to carry them during the school day. An email reminder is sent daily from the Middle School office to students and their parents who have failed to bring their badges, as a prompt to bring their IDs. A lost badge has to be replaced.

Language Use

At the American International School Chennai, English is the language of instruction and assessment. Students and teachers communicate in English throughout the day and across subjects, and all After School Activities are hosted in English. In addition, AISC is a proud host of students from diverse countries, cultures and language backgrounds. We value all students as members of our diverse, multilingual learning community, and students may use any resources linguistic or otherwise to be successful at AISC. This may mean that languages other than English are seen and heard in the classrooms in order to support students as they understand and process new concepts and learning. Within this diverse environment, community members are encouraged to interact with each other using a common language. Our goal is to include others with the languages we use.

Guests and Parent Visits

Occasionally throughout the school year, students may have friends or relatives visiting from other parts of the world. Parents may request permission from the Principal to have such a visitor attend our school for one day. Parents must review the school rules with visitors prior to attending school for the day. Visitors must also bring a book to read to keep them occupied at various times during a lesson and must remain with their AISC student during the course of the day. Please provide the Middle School Office and Principal with two school days’ notice if you would like to request permission for a visitor to attend classes.

Parents who are interested in visiting classes during the school day are asked to meet with the Principal. The Principal will then meet with the teacher to determine an appropriate time and date for the visit.

Posting of Signs and Distribution of Surveys

Students may post signs for their clubs or organizations with prior permission from the Principal. Events that are not school-sponsored may not be advertised at the School without the permission of the school administration. Students and faculty are requested to use masking tape (not cellophane tape or putty) when posting notices to avoid damage to the wall surface.

Student organizations or individual students that would like to electronically distribute programmatic material or surveys for school-related projects to all Middle School students must seek the permission of the Principal. The material will be distributed accordingly by the Middle School Office.

Student Activity Funds and Fundraising

Authorized student organizations shall be required to obtain approval for establishing accounts from the Principal. Student organization accounts shall be informally audited annually by the Administration, and unused funds will be carried over from year to year. Should the organization disband, the membership at the time shall recommend the allocation of remaining funds, with approval for disbursement required from the Principal. The faculty sponsor for each student organization shall be responsible for supervising the accounts of the organization. In addition, from time to time, the School’s Business Manager or his or her designee shall monitor student funds, including sources, accounting, expenditures, and provisions for safekeeping of funds.

Campaigns organized by students, faculty, or parents to raise funds for any purpose shall be limited in number and shall possess an educational value. Additionally, any fundraising in the Middle School must have specific approval from the Principal.

Procedures for Withdrawal

Parents should notify the Office of Enrollment as far in advance as possible of the withdrawal date of their child from the School. To initiate the withdrawal process, the Family Withdrawal Form must be submitted. The link to the electronic form is available in the Principal’s Newsletter. Once submitted, the Middle School Office will be alerted. See below for the process that will be followed for each withdrawal.

1. Documents will be issued only on the last day the student is enrolled.

2. We provide only these documents: cover letter, transfer certificate and past school reports

3. We provide only ONE copy of the documents. Copies are the responsibility of the family.

4. Documents can not be issued until the student has returned all school property, i.e. library books, musical instruments.
