Some car projects are indeed wolves in sheeps’ clothing. It’s no secret that the devil is always in the detail and, indeed, the amount of detail can come to be a crucial test of commitment, and that’s definitely not for the faint-hearted. Here is the story of a true believer and his divine ride. Summer 2012 | AirMighty Megascene |

Loads of VWs parked on the grass beneath shady trees. The smell of the BBQ, the sounds of people being silly in a swimming pool… Is this heaven? No, it’s The AirMighty Summer Picnic, probably the most relaxed weekend in the Aircooled VW Scene! > ack in 2010 we started off small, gathering a few of our mutual friends together for a picnic as a side gig to the “Kanaal Concerten”, a yearly small town music festival next to the typical Dutch canals in Apeldoorn. But in just 3 years our Picnic’s mushroomed into a real event that stands firmly on its own two feet. When I say ‘our picnic’, I mean Michiel van den Bosch who runs the Eetcafe Fijn and myself, Niels Timmerman. Our latest Picnic lasted 2 days and occupied the park next to Holland’s largest outdoor swimming pool,

the “Kristalbad”. One thing didn’t change, we are still located in the city of Apeldoorn, Michiel’s hometown. This 3rd edition of our AirMighty/Fijn Summer Picnic was held on the weekend of 14th and 15th of September and was graced with people who’d come from literally all over Europe. We had participants from Germany, Belgium, Luxemburg, England, The Netherlands of course, and even as far away as the Czech republic! Our ‘longest distance traveled’ award for an Aircooled VW went to a concours restored Samba

that motored 620km to join our party and our Czech visitors covered over 800km, so how about that! Thanks for being there and driving such a long way. One thing’s for sure, the simple concept of our Summer Picnic works well, because people are attracted by the relaxed vibe at our super chilled-out location. It’s all about kicking back with your friends and family, surrounded by our beloved vintage Volkswagens! There’s no awards for quickest times on a track, show-and-shine or anything like that; what we hand out

are things like the “longest distance award,” a “best BBQ award,” or the “best Summer feeling award,” and Marco, Mr. Techtips himself, ran the ‘parachute man contest’ something that put a smile on everyone’s faces, young or old. There was an absolute fun factor covering the whole event, and the open-air pool facilities were free to all participants at the Summer Picnic. Slides, playground, big bounce house were heaven to the next generation of VW fans. Plenty of stalls were built up over the weekend; there were VW parts for sale, pin-striping demos, and loads of other stuff. All kinds of food

Berrie van Beurden’s 15-window parked at the start of the camping field.

We exceeded all expectations, with over 500 Aircooled VWs showing up, and 2,000 people coming to the “Kristalbad” park to check it out. We heard positive feedback from all quarters, and since so many people covered such great distances to join us

we’ve decided to make the party even bigger in 2013 by adding another night to the show! So, be sure to book our event into your calendar. The dates are 13th, 14th and 15th of September. We’ve got plenty of new ideas about how to make an already wonderful weekend even better! However, space in the park is limited so you’d better watch out for the advance ticket sales, because once we’re sold out there’s really no extra camping space left. And the AirMighty/ Fijn Summer Picnic is something you don’t want to miss out on if you like a relaxed, Aircooled VW weekend just as much as

Michiel aka Mr.Fijn rollin’ his ‘57 double door panel

Even the locals came to check out the VW vibe

and drinks were available all over the site; Mr. Fijn, who’s used to the food business, took care of that. He even invited a T2B Ice Cream vendor Bay Window Bus and a Split Window coffee Bus. In the evening we lined up a bunch of bands. The vibe - and that’s what it’s all about - was simply awesome!

We need good coffee, especially in the morning! ;)

2,5 years AirMighty 13 issues AirMighty AirMighty #10 Issue #10 already, time flies when you’re havin g fun they say… I must say that it does, it seems like just yester day when Niels walked up to me at Das Drag Day #07 and explai ned his idea of publishing a new VW magazine. Soon after that we found ourselves working full steam ahead on the first issue of what became AirMighty Megascene. Now here we are 10 issues further, actually 13 issues if you count the #00 and the two Portfolios we have printed. The response and the worldwide following just keeps growing and since people keep on building fantas tic high level Volkswagens week have new stuff to feature every time, onwards and upwards I’m looking forward to what the future will bring! Thanks for reading, buying, subscribing and advertising in our magazine, YOU are the reason why we exist!

I’m a graphic designer by trade with Aircooled VWs and photography as my main hobbies I launched AirMighty.com back in 2001. For years I kept track of the VW scene and kept my website updated with the latest show reports, uploading gallery after gallery. Quickly the AirMighty name spread all over the world and it evolved into a leading Aircooled website. I wanted to take the next step for a long time, as a graphic designer, it seemed logical to me to turn it into a printed magazine. But, it had to have something more that all the stuff that was already out there… So, I got started mocked up some layouts and started looking for writers, contributors and advertisers, I ended up hooking up with Kobus… After a few brainstorming sessions we became partners in crime and step-by-step the magazine took the shape you all know today. A thick, glossy, high quality, quarterly publication! We presented our first issue at the 3Kever Winter Festijn” in Rosmalen, The Netherlands, in January 2010. It’s mushroomed ever since and it just kept growing. Our mag now has a global following and we’ve published 13 issues now, counting the #00 and the two Portfolio limited edition issues. We’re proud to present to you this “Bronze” covered 10th issue and we’ll keep going, up next is the 2012 Portfolio and we have a ton of stories on the backburner to keep you informed about our Scene right here in Airmighty, The Aircooled VW Lifestyle Megascene! Thanks for all your support! Niels Timmerman

Clockwork Orange A car’s destiny can sometimes depend on little things. We all know someone who’s had a beetle in their youth: a family member, a neighbour, a distant relative… Usually, their stories always end with the same sentence: “It was so rotten we had to cut it up and send it to the scrapyard.” But now and again, some cars get lucky and end up in the hands of owners like Roland Lebrun or Sebastian Defrenne. Prototyp Automuseum Hamburg Words: Gunter Hofmans Translation: Kobus Cantraine | Georg Otto | Gaëlle Remacle Pictures: Gunter Hofmans

Hamburg recently acquired a new meeting place for old car fans, rock’n’roll lovers and classic motorcycle aficionados: “Die Oldtimer-Tankstelle” or, in English, The Old Timer Petrol Station. > t’s the only place like it in Northern Germany, and it’s located at Billhorner Röhrendamm 4 in Hamburg. The men behind the concept are Alex Piatscheck and Jann de Boer, and their objective was to open a place where anyone could get their vehicle serviced by competent people, in a period location that had actually been a gas station since 1953! While they pamper your beloved antique car or bike you can relax and grab a bite to eat or get a hot pot of coffee inside the typical ‘50s diner, where everything old is period correct. But when it comes to the mechanicals of your ride they will use everything that modern technology has to offer to provide the best possible service. On Sunday 29th April they hosted their first Aircooled gathering at the “Tankstelle”, precursor to the meeting not so far away at Hannover on 1st May. Together with the PROTOTYP Museum’s latest recruit, Helge Ohmes, they reunited quite a few vintage VW and Porsches, and the “Museum Express” tourist train was used to transport people to the nearby PROTOTYP Museum. Talk about moving in style! The locomotive is powered by a 25hp split-window Beetle engine, and was originally built to transport people around the Walsrode Exotic Bird Zoo (www.weltvogelpark.de). Like its powerplant, it was built in the 1950s and was recently carefully restored, proving to be still up to the job of taking large groups of people on short-haul journeys.

There are plenty of amazing things too see inside the brick walls of the old Hamburg warehouse that houses the PROTOTYP Museum’s Schmidt/König collection, but we will be bringing that to you in detail soon. amburg hat seit kurzem einen neuen Treffpunkt für OldtimerFreunde, Rock’n’Roll-Liebhaber und Fans alter Motorräder: Die Oldtimer-Tankstelle!

Mille Miglia 2012 Words: Johnny Tipler Translation: Georg Otto | Gaëlle Remacle Pictures: Johnny Tipler | Annette Schlez

ROMAN HOLIDAY! Four ‘50s Beetles run the historic Italian road race - from Brescia to Rome and back, just like they did in 1956 > our hot days in May, and the cream of the world’s classic competition cars traverse the balmy Italian countryside, retracing the legendary Mille Miglia. The 1,000-mile road race was one of the foremost fixtures on the international motorsport calendar between 1927 and 1957 and, back in the day, carmakers gained invaluable marketing kudos for their products by fielding entries, and Volkswagen was no exception. So it’s fitting that, for the 2012 event, Wolfsburg’s Classic museum presents three 1956 Beetles, with a privateer ‘52 split rear window car in the mix for good measure. The original event was banned after a major accident in 1957

F

when, within sight of the chequered flag, the Marquis de Portago flipped his Ferrari at 160mph when a tyre blew, killing himself, his co-driver and 10 spectators. Such was the event’s national prestige that it was revived in 1977 and run as a regularity rally over timed special stages - 187 this year rather than a flat-out blinder. The format is much the same, though: 384 fabulous concours classics built between ‘27 and ‘57 assemble in northern Italy’s post-medieval Brescia city centre and prepare for the run south to Rome. As well as the Wolfsburg cars there are strong museum entries from Jaguar, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and

Fiat, with a welter of oddballs such as Ermini, OM, BNC, Siata and Cisitalia. An amazing spectacle, static as well as in motion. It’s a sobering thought that the MM record still stands to Sir Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson, set in 1955 in a works MercedesBenz 300SLR at 10h 7m 45s, an average of just under 100mph! So, how did the VW’s do in 2012? The highest placed Beetle was the 1956 oval of Michael Macht and Birgit Priemer in 149th spot, with the 1952 car of Marcus Englert and Frank Briegmann 177th, then Ulrich Hackenberg and Edgar Koerdt Volker Edgar filled 241st place with the second work’s Bug, and Stefan Sielaff and

Show | Vintage VW Show, Kaposvár Words: Tamás Jávor Translation: Johnny Tipler | Georg Otto | Gaëlle Remacle Pictures: Tamás Jávor

Hungary for Love Bugs The Vintage VW meeting in Kaposvár eet Attila the show organiser: he’s hunkered down in Hungary, where he gradually put together a collection of pre-’57 ovalwindow Beetles, split-window Busses and Karmann Ghias, and then eight years ago he organised the first VW jamboree in the cute Hungarian town of Kaposvár. It’s close to the other Balkan countries, as well as Austria, so the gates were open to all aircooled models and Dub fans because he wanted to plug the genre in that part of eastern Europe, with all the usual razzamataz and sideshows thrown in to conjure up a genuine international flavour.

M

The organiser and his buddies beavered like crazy to lay on truly memorable weekends, and the cameraderie was top class. Attractions included rock concerts and late-night disco, plus food, drink and catering stalls, even down to creature comforts like loo and shower situations. Anyone who just wanted to chill could simply snuggle down in the camping area or book a b’n’b in the redeveloped centre of Kaposvár. Hey, but what are we thinking of: we haven’t even mentioned the cars yet! True to form on these Vee-Dub gigs, there’ve been many styles of vintage VWs rocking up at these events, from rust-bucket barn-finds to concours stock cars restored to show condition - from rats to Cal-lookers, in other words, and everything else in between. Some owners even got busy with the spit-and-polish, buffing up their pride-and-joy in the crowded paddock areas. Take Gábor G, who drove up in his oval, having brought along two splits last time,

while one determined guy showed off the handmade ovalwindow bodyshell that he’d just finished, and another dude brought a split and an oval ratlooker: there’s been so much to see and drool over! The locals also have a nice range of ovals from ‘53 to ‘57, as well as bay busses, old Porsches, Karmann-Ghias, Type 3s and Superbeetles too. The best examples of the Hungarian Dub scene have descended on Kaposvár in recent years, and it’s only a matter of time before they reach the same volume of cars that western European events attract. Come rain or shine, the last couple of years the event has attracted more than 20 ovals and splits, and, amazingly, the line-up was long, even on the rainy days of 2010, establishing Kaposvár as a focal point on the Hungarian VW events calendar. In 2013 the meeting needs a larger area, so we’ll head sown the road apiece to where there’s a 60 hectare park, complete with lake, golf course and other enticements, still close to Kaposvár, so it looks like we’ll be enjoying the next meet in a huge green oasis. So, dudes, we want you here for next year’s session; go check it out on ‘Google maps’, watch out for the notices, and get your Vee-dubs rolling! ttila ist ein ganz besonderer Mensch.
