tilising Microsoft Xbox 360 Kinect scanners, Ambionics creates fully customised limbs which are tailored to the user from a 3D scan of their arm.

For ease, parents are able to perform the scan at home whilst their children are asleep. Once this is done, they simply send the file over to the team at Ambionics, who clean up the scan data then design and supply test sockets, which are later followed by the full arm system. The designs are created at low cost but high quality, and using innovative technology they can be made to feel the same as a real limb. By placing water-filled rubber sacks (actuators) at pressure points on the body (e.g. under the arm, inside the socket or even within a shoe), pressure can be generated by the user which then operates the grabbing system in the same way that spiders move their legs. This unique approach reduces the cost and improves the lives of children, and could be used worldwide to support children.

Looking ahead, thanks to support from its sponsor RS Components, and with design input from Autodesk, Ambionics are carrying out a beta trial and giving away twenty arms to children in Africa, Australia, South America, Canada and across Europe. The firmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inexpensive but life changing technology could help very young children learn to use prosthetics and live more engaging lives right from the very start, and as such Ambionics will be seeking to expand and grow so that they can provide it to even more children. With obvious benefits to the children, this is also helping Ambionics to refine its service, develop prototypes and beta test the systems and processes needed to roll out on a large scale in 2018-19. Ambionics will be based at the new science park (M-SParc) on the North Wales coast when it opens early next year, and these developments offer the firm the chance to grow and offer this unique service to a vast array of children internationally.

“Working across a broad range of sectors, we must adapt to our various clients’ needs, with our clients consisting of private owners seeking a reliable General Contractor to assist with construction due to business growth.” Possessing a wealth of knowledge, Shane is keen to explain the services that the firm offers and what clients can expect from working with Kenco Development. “Exciting for the firm, our latest project was a ground up, 80,000 SF psychiatric hospital in Devens, MA. This was one of the most difficult project we have faced, due the complexity and particulars of the MA Dept of Public Health. The largest challenge of this project was project schedule. We had a very tight deadline while dealing with custom/specialty items. We are very proud that we finished this project both on time and on budget. “What made it a success is perhaps the way we approach our ventures. The key areas we focus on when approaching a project are design, budget and schedule. It is very important to have a well development Design and construction plan to ensure a successful project. Creating a proposed budget and schedule is also a vital role is project approach, and the timing and economics are a very important role in a successful project.” Kenco Development are young and growing company, expanding in many different areas and it is the hard-working staff which help to set it apart from others. The past 12 months have been particularly exciting for the firm, as it worked on a number of projects which Peter is eager to discuss.

“During 2017, our largest extension and refurbishment project to date reached completion on site. Located in Dulwich Village, Southwark, the project was highly aspirational in delivering a gracefully complementary addition to the existing property. Delivered for artist clients, it was key to ensure that their creativity transpired into the end result and that their vision was technically deliverable and beautiful. Neat detailing and a controlled palette of materials resulted in a cohesive feel throughout the property. The project combined workspace with living space and one of the challenges was to combine flexibility and privacy ensuring the property not only looked impressive but was also very functional. Large expanses of glass required creative technical solutions resulting in elegant and neat architectural details. In Lee Manor, Lewisham, our contemporary refurbishment and extension project secured planning consent despite the associated sensitivities of designing within a conservation area. Scheduled to reach practical completion by the end of the year, it will be one of our flagship schemes. The contemporary additions to the original property were highly commended by the local planning authority and the project has since been used by them as a successful precedent of good design within conservation areas. “Alongside this, our design for a new development of 5 family homes within a former farm in Brentwood, Essex, received planning permission in November 2017. This extremely challenging project, which replaces the existing industrial buildings with new houses within the Metropolitan Green Belt, is a result of a very close dialogue with the local planning authority’s planning officers and design officer. For the project to be a success, it had to demonstrate an exceptionally high level of design quality. Avoiding pastiche, we have delivered a contemporary scheme inspired by the architectural language of the local vernacular.” Looking to the future, Peter foresees invigorating times ahead for P.LANSTUDIO, as the firm seeks to build upon its current success and work with an even wider range of clients and collaborators.
