Welcome to AIDS Walk Los Angeles 2012 Thirty-thousand people. That’s the number expected to fill the streets of West Hollywood and Los Angeles on October 14 for the 28th annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles. It’s a number large enough to stop traffic; to turn heads from Highland Park to Hollywood; and to remind our city that HIV/AIDS is still taking lives every day, in every neighborhood. It’s an extraordinary number. But it falls short of another different and devastating statistic: 33,000 – the number of lives taken by HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County since the epidemic began. Since 1985, when Los Angeles held the first fundraising walk to fight HIV/AIDS, Angelenos have been on the front lines of the battle to end the epidemic. Together, we’ve made tremendous strides. In 2011, with your support, we provided direct services and education programs to more than 11,000 low-income people living with HIV/AIDS. We distributed over 150,000 bags of free groceries through our Vance North Necessities of Life Program food pantry network – the largest of its kind in the country. We performed more than 12,000 dental procedures in our two dental clinics and mobile dental van. And we’ve provided countless hours of mental health counseling, housing assistance, and in-home care throughout Los Angeles. Because of your efforts, we’ve also reached thousands with our face-to-face HIV prevention and testing programs. These groundbreaking initiatives target those at highest risk of infection – including gay men, people of color, and youth – to stop the epidemic in its tracks. Our testing program identifies those who are HIV-positive but don’t know it and links them directly to lifesaving care. And your work has taken us from City Hall to Sacramento to the U.S. Capitol to bring the urgent concerns of all affected by HIV/AIDS directly to our most influential policymakers. But we still face stark realities. In Los Angeles County, seven new people become HIV-positive every day. And 60,000 are already living with the disease here; 20 percent don’t know it. That’s why we need you: to bring vital programs and services to every person who walks through our doors; to offer HIV prevention education to all we can reach; to talk about the worst public health crisis in our history with every leader who will listen; and to lend our decades of experience to every person we can touch. On behalf of the clients, volunteers, staff and board of directors of AIDS Project Los Angeles, welcome to AIDS Walk Los Angeles 2012. Thank you for walking with us.

AIDS Walk Los Angeles Born Out of Activism

AIDS Walk Los Angeles was founded in 1985 by Craig R. Miller and his organization of activists, MZA Events. Miller and MZA have produced this landmark event every year since its inception. Through the efforts of thousands of supporters, AIDS Walk Los Angeles has become a proud Los Angeles tradition and the largest AIDS fundraiser in California. In its 28-year history, the event has raised more than $72 million for AIDS Project Los Angeles and scores of other AIDS service organizations throughout L.A. County.

AIDS Project Los Angeles is dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by HIV disease; reducing the incidence of HIV infection; and advocating for fair and effective HIV-related public policy.

Why Are AIDS Walk Los Angeles Ads Banned from Big Blue Bus? By Ben Fordham

or many years, AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) has purchased paid advertisements on Big Blue Bus (operated by the City of Santa Monica) for its annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles. These ads help educate and engage the public. This year, Big Blue Bus is refusing these promotions and all other public service messages from charities. AIDS Project Los Angeles has been fighting back with a campaign to end this “absurd” ban on advertising non-profit community services. “This unfair policy not only hurts AIDS Project Los Angeles, it also Phil Curtis, APLA’s Director of Government Affairs, shows the L.A. Times ad placed by targets all other non-profits which AIDS Walk Los Angeles encouraging foster community spirit, help those supporters to express their outrange to who are most vulnerable, and Santa Monica City officials. provide valuable information to the public,” said Phil Curtis, Director of Government Affairs at APLA. While the City of Santa Monica blunders over its ad policy, fortunately, the City of Los Angeles is not experiencing this difficulty. Such ads are on L.A. buses right now, just as similar AIDS Walk ads ran on San Francisco buses earlier this summer. “Sadly, the unelected executives at Santa Monica City Hall have it wrong,” said Lisa Brisse, President of Santa Monica-based company State of the Heart Fitness, and 18-year resident of Santa Monica. “If ads from oil companies or for extra large soft drinks can run on Santa Monica buses, then community groups confronting global warming, childhood obesity or AIDS should have the same right to buy ads.” Brisse is spearheading a new AIDS Walk Los Angeles team called Santa Monicans for AIDS Walk L.A. The team sprung up as a grassroots response from Santa Monicans to the new Big Blue Bus policy. “Santa Monica residents are not taking this issue lightly,” said Brisse. “As responsible citizens, we will fight to bring responsible values and healthy, active choices back to the sides of the Big Blue Bus.” If you are interested in becoming a part of this effort, visit aidswalk.net and join team #2776, “Santa Monicans for AIDS Walk L.A.”

A Community United in Action AIDS Project Los Angeles has once again invited more than 30 local AIDS service organizations to receive urgently needed funds by participating in the Community Coalition Initiative (CCI). Now in its 16th year, the program allows these important organizations to fundraise as AIDS Walk Los Angeles teams and keep 100 percent of the proceeds they raise. Profiles by Kate Rosenblum

sian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team (APAIT) is a leading responder to HIV/AIDS in the Asian Pacific community. The organization offers a wide range of programs to improve the quality of life for medically underserved communities living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS. APAIT stemmed from the Asian Pacific Lesbians and Gays AIDS Intervention Team (APLG AIT), founded by Dean Goishi and five fellow members of the Asian Pacific Lesbians and Gays (APLG) in 1989. This group created HIV education materials in seven Asian Pacific Islander languages: Cambodian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese. Two years later, APLG AIT transitioned into the Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team and joined the National Minority AIDS Council.

he Life Group LA is dedicated to improving the lives of people who are infected and affected by HIV. Empowerment and acceptance serve as the foundation of this organization, which offers free medical forums and support groups. Their services provide the judgment-free environment, emotional support, and education necessary to make healthy choices surrounding HIV. The Life Group LA Executive Director and Co-Founder, Sunnie Rose, lost many friends to HIV/AIDS. She remembers visiting dying friends in the hospital; some kept their HIV status a secret, while others were open about living with HIV but had families afraid to visit them. Sunnie recalls, “I would visit friends and crawl in bed with them. I just didn’t want people to be alone and isolated.”

The Life Group LA walks with pride and gratitude as part of the Community Coalition.

Sunnie’s calling to support others in times of need led her to establish The Life Group LA in 2005. Sunnie believes her organization’s involvement as a CCI team is vital. “I cannot thank AIDS Walk Los Angeles enough for extending this honor and privilege,” she says. “To be quite honest, without the money we raised last year at AIDS Walk Los Angeles, I am not sure where we would be now. I am forever, abundantly grateful!”

The Wall Las Memorias: Remembering the Past, Looking to the Future

O

n World AIDS Day, December 1, 1993, activists joined together in Los Angeles’s Lincoln Heights neighborhood to confront the plague of silence surrounding HIV/AIDS in the Latino community. It was this gathering that brought to life The Wall Las Memorias Project, founded by Richard Zaldivar. Richard aspired to build a memorial for people lost to AIDS. Supporters raised money to construct the memorial and, 11 years later, the wall was built. Upon the memorial’s completion, Richard declared, “We have faced the silence and denial of AIDS. More than 10 years ago, we made a commitment to build a monument to remember people lost to AIDS. Today, we celebrate a promise made and kept. No more denial, no more shame, no more fear. Only love.”

The Life Group LA: Healing from Within

To be quite honest, without the money we raised last year at AIDS Walk Los Angeles, I am not sure where we would be now. Sunnie Rose

Executive Director of The Life Group LA

"AIDS Walk Los Angeles has always been a boost for APAIT Health Center," says APAIT CEO Jury Candelario. “We walk as an excellent form of team building. The money raised helps serve our clients and build our own capacity to provide services." APAIT raised more than $8,900 through last year’s AIDS Walk Los Angeles. On October 14, they will walk for the third time as a Community Coalition team.

The Wall Las Memorias is not only a monument, but also a non-profit organization that provides free HIV testing, as well as services targeting men who have sex with men (MSM) and communities of faith. “Living in the era of the AIDS pandemic, it was my calling to fight the disease and address the social factors that led to the spread of HIV,” states Richard. “That remains my mission to this day.”

AIDS Walk Los Angeles thanks our Community Coalition Sponsor This year, not only is AHF Pharmacy the Presenting Sponsor of AIDS Walk Los Angeles, but it has again made an additional gift of $100,000 to support the Community Coalition Initiative. The 20 highest fundraising CCI teams will each receive a $5,000 grant from AHF Pharmacy!

Stylist to the Stars Takes His Team to the Top By Kate Rosenblum

C

elebrity stylist Chaz Dean is one of the hardest working men in hair business. On top of developing incredible hair products and styling stars like Alyssa Milano, Brooke Burke, and Holly Robinson Peete, Chaz stays busy fighting for causes close to his heart. One of his many ambitions is to sustain and improve care for people living with HIV/AIDS. Chaz works toward this goal by leading his AIDS Walk Los Angeles team, “WEN in Spirit,” and inviting fellow stylists, friends, and clients to join him to fundraise and walk together. Chaz is committed to supporting AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and empowering his community to join him in the fight against AIDS. He explains, “APLA has inspired me to start my own team and walk to help raise funds and awareness. From extensive community outreach to vital food pantries, countless lives have been touched and changed by APLA.” Now in its third year, his team (named after Chaz’s acclaimed WEN line of hair products) has risen fast to become one of the top teams from last year’s event! Last year they collected $18,686 and ranked 16th highest out of 1,730 teams. The creativity pulsing through Chaz and his team reaches beyond their hair styling and design talents. Their innovative fundraising techniques are products of passion and fresh perspectives. Strategies include selling custom hand-painted Chuck Taylors and limitededition team T-shirts on eBay, donating haircuts by Chaz, and auctioning baskets of product. True to their team name, this group walks with spirit. Operations Manager at Chaz Dean, Inc.,

Craig Register, remarks that, “From the enthusiasm of the volunteers to the positivity of the walkers themselves, AIDS Walk Los Angeles inspires us. The joy that everyone brings to the Walk makes it one of the most inspiring events we take part in all year.” Team WEN in Spirit comes to West Hollywood Park ready to rejoice as they head 6.2 miles closer to a world free from HIV/AIDS. Leading the way are their equally spirited and wellgroomed four-legged friends: Chaz’s dogs Hunter, Spencer, and Ella.

PROFILES IN COURAGE – APLA CLIENT STORIES By Kristen Hellwig

Kengi Carr Kengi Carr remembers the first time he saw someone with AIDS. “An old family friend was hospitalized, and I drove his mother to see him,” Kengi recalls. “He looked awful – his mother was sobbing – and I remember wondering, ‘Is this going to be me someday?’” In fact, Kengi did become HIV-positive in 2008 – further complicating a medical history that already included sickle cell anemia and five bouts with cancer. At the time of his HIV diagnosis, Kengi was also homeless. “I knew that I needed help,” he says, “I had volunteered at APLA briefly in high school – so I knew that’s where I could go.” He joined APLA’s Newly Diagnosed support group and began seeing a case manager. Kengi says that “the staff at APLA genuinely cares. They call and check on me, and I’ve learned about so many resources that I can turn to.” No longer homeless himself, Kengi now uses his experience living on the streets to help others. He organizes groups of friends who assemble kits that include fresh socks and toiletries for other men, women, and youth who live on Los Angeles streets. “I know that I can depend on APLA,” Kengi says, “so now I can spend time helping those who depend on me.”

I know that I can depend on APLA, so now I can spend time helping those who depend on me. Kengi Carr Client at APLA

Darryl Hendrix For the first year after Darryl Hendrix was diagnosed with HIV, he didn’t tell his family. Thirty-one and married at the time, the father of two had enrolled in a research study at County-USC Medical Center to investigate an experimental drug to treat his high blood pressure. Three weeks into the study, a nurse pulled him into an exam room. “You don’t qualify to continue,” she said. “You have HIV.” Darryl’s HIV wasn’t the only secret he kept from his family. He was also gay. “It was just something else to be ashamed of,” he explains. The stress worsened his blood pressure problem until he eventually gathered his family in one room and came clean about his infection. The following afternoon, his mother died. “That was just the last straw,” he remembers quietly. “I thought [my mother’s] death was my fault. It was just too much.”

Within weeks, Darryl had attempted suicide twice, and he began spending most of his monthly income on cocaine. His blood pressure escalated wildly until, one day as he walked out of a grocery store, he collapsed in the parking lot and suffered a stroke. While hospitalized, a nurse told him about APLA. He began seeing a therapist through APLA’s Pacific Center, a program that recruits volunteer licensed marriage and family therapists who provide free weekly psychotherapy in the therapist’s private practice for APLA clients. “I had never really learned to cope with my HIV and my addiction,” he says. “But during therapy, I learned how.” Since he had become sober, Darryl also qualified for subsidized housing, and an APLA housing case manager located a Hollywood apartment for him. He used the free bus pass he received from APLA to travel to the agency’s Vance North Necessities of Life Program (NOLP) food pantry for groceries. And, determined to overcome the shame that still shrouded his life as a gay man, Darryl attended a series of workshops hosted by APLA’s African American Gay Men’s Health Initiative (AAGMHI). It was during those two days, Darryl says, that he took his first steps toward conquering the stigma that surrounded his sexuality. “I realized that being gay isn’t shameful,” he explains. “I have a lot of reasons to take better care of myself, to stay sober, and to control my HIV.”

Felicia Swift Looking back on her past, Felicia Swift can hardly remember a time when she wasn’t homeless. Felicia, a White Mountain Apache Indian who left her reservation in Arizona for Los Angeles, struggled with drug addiction and alcoholism. She is also HIV-positive. “Four years ago, a friend told me about APLA. He said that they could help me,” Felicia explains. “Since then, my life has turned around.” APLA’s Housing Support Services staff helped Felicia to find and pay for affordable housing. “Suddenly, I had my own apartment. I had rent and responsibilities. I even had my own cats. There were so many reasons to stay sober,” she says. And Felicia, who identifies as a transgender woman, also found a peer group. She began to attend meetings of APLA’s Red Circle Project, the only HIV prevention program in Los Angeles County that specifically targets Native American / Alaska Natives. “It wasn’t easy to find others who[m] I could identify with,” she says. “But during Red Circle meetings, I can really talk about issues that affect me: alcoholism, drugs, urban life. And I have a chance to talk to people who aren’t infected – to help them learn how to stay safe.” “And for once,” Felicia adds with a smile, “I feel like I’m part of a group. That’s a new feeling for me. I’m just not looking in from the outside anymore.”

t’s Sunday morning, 6 a.m.—the day of AIDS Walk Los Angeles. At Sign-In, tech-savvy volunteers unload and set up enough computers, power cables, and routers to run a small company. For the next several hours, the parking structure at the West Hollywood Library serves as a makeshift Wi-Fi hotspot for thousands as AIDS Walk Los Angeles goes live. The goal? To ensure the event stays as green as possible by offering efficient, paperless sign-in. Culver City-based CRE Rentals makes this operation possible by supplying the computers necessary to power this effort at no charge to the event.

Volunteers distribute Walker Stickers at Green Walker Sign-In, powered by CRE. In 2008, AIDS Walk Los Angeles introduced its Green Walker™ program, an eco-friendly initiative to reduce both paper and postage. Green Walkers collect donations online and receive information via email. A huge perk of the program is the express, electronic “Green Walker SignIn” on the morning of the event. With these walkers now comprising more than a third of the walker population, this Sign-In needs to be stocked with computers capable of handling a crowd. Thanks to CRE, AIDS Walk Los Angeles is able to offer this quick-and-easy option to more than 12,000 Green Walkers. In addition to donating dozens of laptops to expedite Green Walker Sign-In in West Hollywood Park, CRE also donates laptops to AIDS Walk New York and AIDS Walk San Francisco, helping AIDS Walk events stay earth-friendly from coast to coast. “They do so much in all three cities! We are unbelievably grateful for their dedication to ensure our fight to eliminate HIV/AIDS goes hand in hand with our commitment to the environment,” says AIDS Walk Los Angeles Event Operations Specialist, Natalie Lembeck. As the Green Walker program enters its fifth year, support from CRE helps the AIDS Walk movement continuously make strides in producing a greener event. Time Warner Cable: Tuned in to Generosity By Kate Rosenblum and Brett Spigelman

or your viewing pleasure and to support a great company, we suggest tuning in to a program on Time Warner Cable, a Grand Sponsor of AIDS Walk Los Angeles. This year, the company is more than doubling its airing of Public Service Announcements (PSAs), and is donating an additional $25,000 (a whopping 500% increase from last year’s financial contribution) to the event. Over the past 7 years, Time Warner Cable has established itself as one of AIDS Walk Los Angeles’s strongest and most committed sponsors. Launching into the 2012 campaign with its exceptional contribution, this praiseworthy cable company – the second largest in the U.S. – continues to demonstrate an extraordinary dedication to our community's fight against HIV/AIDS. AIDS Walk Los Angeles relies on donated marketing and promotional services during the months leading up to the event. Such promotion not only reminds people of the upcoming Walk, but also serves the vital function of keeping the issue in the public eye. By airing PSAs on more than eight cable channels, including CNN, Bravo, VH1, USA, and TBS, Time Warner Cable contributes tremendously to the event’s outreach.

F

“Time Warner Cable recognizes that AIDS Walk Los Angeles is one of the greatest events in Southern California,” says Community Relations Director Katie Beardsley. “It is such an impactful and enjoyable event that exemplifies community activism and unity. As a Grand Sponsor, we are committed to support the communities we serve and cultural diversity. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to the overall fight against HIV/AIDS.” Time Warner Cable is also proud to host the Star Walker™ Breakfast for the second year and continue providing “royal treatment” to AIDS Walk Los Angeles’s highest fundraisers. This breakfast takes place on the morning of the event and celebrates the fundraising elite: walkers who raise $1,000 or more. One of Time Warner Cable’s hits as host last year was their photo booth with on-the-spot printed photos. Another dazzling breakfast is in store for this year’s event! The continued success of AIDS Walk Los Angeles is possible because of the generous support of enthusiastic sponsors like Time Warner Cable. The company stands tall as a philanthropic leader in our community and a powerhouse in the fight to end AIDS.

Cynthia Park: the World’s Champion AIDS Walk Fundraiser

S

tar Walkers are AIDS Walk Los Angeles’s fundraising elite— those who set their fundraising goal at $1,000 or more. The collective power of these dedicated supporters has generated millions of dollars for AIDS Project Los Angeles and many other AIDS service organizations in L.A. County. This year we shine a special spotlight on one of our most inspirational stars: Cynthia Park. Cynthia began fundraising for AIDS Walk Los Angeles in 1993, and she hasn’t stopped since. She surprised even herself by raising more than $35,000 that first year. This was but the first of many successes. To date, she has raised a total of over $1 million! Currently Supervisor of DreamWorks Animation's Charitable Giving, Grants and Community Outreach, Cynthia was longtime

Cynthia (far right) at the event with her sisters, Bev and Judy, by her side. All three are sporting fabulous AIDS Walk Award T-shirts.

Executive Assistant to Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation. With Jeffrey’s Rolodex by her side, she is able to include studio executives, Cynthia actors, producers, directors, Park screenwriters and musicians $62,021 among her sponsors. However, it is not merely this special donor base keeping Cynthia at #1 on the “Top Fundraisers” list. It is her unwavering commitment to see a day without AIDS that sustains her astonishing fundraising year after year. This is evident to all her sponsors, many of whom have been supporting her since 1993. Cynthia says they are grateful for the personal messages she sends, once in the form of faxes, and now via email. “Let's all help to eliminate this epidemic,” Park says. “There are still people contracting this terrible disease. There are still people dying.” Cynthia adds, “There are so many organizations and causes that need our time, attention, and support, so I am very grateful for every dollar I am able to raise for AIDS Walk Los Angeles each year." “She has a lot of elegance,” admires Craig Miller, Founder and Producer of AIDS Walk Los Angeles. “When she approaches potential donors, she lets her personality shine through and everyone wants to support her—because it’s a good cause and she is graceful and passionate about it.” Thank you, Cynthia. Each year, you bring us closer to ending this epidemic.

“I know you have what it takes to be a Star Walker! Call me at 213.201.WALK to join the Club. I’ll be here to help you shoot for the stars!” Linsey Kramer Star Walker Coordinator

For the fifth year in a row, Tom Whitman and his Gang of 100 have claimed the coveted title of #1 fundraising team. One of the most influential socialites in Los Angeles, as well as Board Chair of AIDS Project Los Angeles, Tom inspires his Team Members to step up, reach out, and make a difference. These young altruists have raised more than $600,000 for AIDS Walk Los Angeles. The Gang of 100 is known for their mid-Walk pool party – truly putting the fun in fundraising!

Toyota

Toyota is a prime example of a team that goes above and beyond. In addition to the Toyota employees, friends, and family members who have been walking and fundraising as an AIDS Walk Los Angeles team for more than 18 years, the company has also been a longtime corporate sponsor of the event. Last year, the team reached new fundraising heights with a team total of $75,638 – the most the team has ever raised.

DreamWorks Animation

Dreaming big and working hard, DreamWorks Animation has been a consistent Gold Team since 1996. Year after year, their always dedicated Team Leader, Dina Strada, rallies the support of DreamWorks creator, Jeffery Katzenberg, and its employees. Their “secret fundraising weapon” is the legendary Cynthia Park, who has raised a lifetime total of more than $1 million, making her the world’s most successful AIDS Walk participant!

New Roads School Leads the Path to an AIDS-Free Generation By Inbar Sharon

ew Roads School in Santa Monica is a small private school with a big heart. Founded on the philosophy of giving, the school reserves 40 percent of its funding for scholarships. The result is a significantly diverse and unique student body dedicated to fostering a warm, accepting school community. This ubiquitous spirit of community service led New Roads School to form an AIDS Walk Los Angeles team in 2001. They have reached milestones throughout the past 11 years, and last year they walked with more than 300 Team Members! New Roads School is also a member of the Kids Who Care Coalition, a group of about 10 schools that walk together as one massive team at the event. Formed in 1992, this coalition is proud to be a Gold Team, ranking among AIDS Walk Los Angeles’s top 20 fundraising groups! In addition to their unwavering dedication to the community, the team’s passion is fueled by a strong, personal connection to the fight against AIDS. On September 2, 2006, they lost one of their beloved students, Andraya Hunter, to AIDS. Andraya and her two siblings were born with HIV after their father infected their mother with the virus. She lost her whole family to the disease, and was raised primarily by her grandmother. Andraya passed away at age 18, just 3 weeks after receiving her high school diploma. Team Leader and Director of Volunteer Services at New Roads, Mario Johonson, describes Andraya as a “dynamic, outspoken youth leader who continually educated other young people about the importance of sexual health, safer sex, and compassion for the afflicted.” She inspired those who knew her while she was alive, and her spirit continues to inspire incoming students. Andraya envisioned the creation of a safe space at her school, where kids can talk freely about sexual health. “We have sought to honor her spirit by rallying our entire community to come out and support this awesome event,” says Mr. Johonson. “She lit the flame and we want it to stay alive forever.” With students walking from the elementary, middle, and high school, as well as numerous faculty, friends, and extended family members, it is clear that New Roads School is extraordinarily committed to that mission.

We Miss You, Elaine By Bert Champagne and Kate Rosenblum

she went on a strict “doctor’s orders” diet and refrained from eating these dishes, she continued cooking them for us. Elaine’s last visit to the office was in January. The volunteer room was freshly painted blue; Elaine loved it and said the color matched her eyes. A few weeks later, longtime staff and close friends of Elaine, Bert Champagne and April Yamamoto, visited Elaine in the hospital. She told them she loved the AIDS Walk Los Angeles staff and thanked everyone for making her last 15 years so wonderful. The following afternoon, she passed away peacefully.

This spring, April, Bert, and several volunteers arranged a memorial for Elaine. At the service, Elaine’s daughter Jackie said she knew her mom was happy when she was volunteering for AIDS Walk Los Angeles. The office is not the same without Elaine. We will work in her honor on this year’s event and will never forget her years of dedicated service and positive outlook, which live on in all who knew her. With great sadness, Bert expresses that, “When you think of love, you think of Elaine. Sometimes on Valentine's Day, you have to let go of someone you love.” Photos by Marco Robinson

his Valentine’s Day, AIDS Walk Los Angeles suffered a heartbreaking loss when longtime volunteer Elaine Abraham passed away. For 15 years, the AIDS Walk Los Angeles office was a second home to Elaine. To the event staff, she was family. Seventeen years ago, Elaine’s son Jeff died of AIDS. Rather than squelching her spirit, this terrible loss fueled her determination to prevent other mothers from experiencing this kind of suffering. Elaine made it her mission to keep Jeff's memory alive by volunteering for AIDS Walk Los Angeles. Throughout the busy season of preparation before each year’s event (July through October), you would find Elaine in the office nearly every day, sitting alongside fellow dedicated volunteers as they talked, laughed, stuffed Walker Kits, packaged posters, and helped with a variety of tasks. Our staff loved stopping by the volunteer room to chat with Elaine, always uplifted by her beautiful smile and energy. Making us happy made Elaine happy. She cooked delicious lunches for us, toting pans of shepherd’s pie, tamale pie, and kugel into the office. Even after

Elaine with members of her AIDS Walk Los Angeles family.

Thank You to Our Outstanding Volunteers – We Could Not Do This Without You

Nothing inspires me more than seeing 30,000 people take to the streets each year in support of this important cause, I would not miss it for anything. The public can forget how many people in their community continue to struggle with the day-to-day consequences of this disease. AIDS Walk Los Angeles brings that all back into focus.

DID YOU KNOW... In the United States, 1 in 5 of those infected with HIV each year is unaware of their status.

Debbie Cordero Answers the Call… and We Adore Her!

“Thank you for calling AIDS Walk Los Angeles. How may I help you?” Those are the words you will hear when you call the AIDS Walk Los Angeles office and, most likely, the person talking to you is our sweet and spicy Debbie Cordero! In her role as Office Coordinator, Debbie is the front line on incoming calls and answers an estimated 5,000 calls throughout any given AIDS Walk Los Angeles campaign. While her main assignment is to assist the people who call, she is also responsible for processing walker registrations, managing the office inventory of supplies, mailing each and every Walker Kit (which numbered more than 18,000 last year), and a myriad of tasks large and small; always with a smile. Debbie’s tasks are numerous and she handles them all with great skill and vivacity, but her greatest gifts to the AIDS Walk are her patience, thoughtfulness, efficiency, and welcoming manner. Her desk is at the entrance to the office, and she greets every visitor with warmth and the sincere desire to help. Debbie started with AIDS Walk Los Angeles in 2001. She played an important role in helping the AIDS Walk relocate to West Hollywood Park when it was required to move from Paramount Studios. Due to security concerns after the tragic circumstances of September 11th, Paramount Studios was, with great remorse, forced to end its 16-year history of hosting the event. She has been with us each year after that. “Debbie is so delightful. She returns to us when the campaign starts every year; just like a refreshing, lovely spring season after a dull, cold winter!” Supervisor of Office Management, Bert Champagne, gushes. Praise for Debbie comes from all of her co-workers. Shona Borevitz, Event Director, explains, “Debbie is the perfect blend of professional purpose and homespun kindness.” Debbie’s hospitality also enchants the staff and volunteers. When the campaign is in full tilt and some are too busy to escape for lunch, she brings in a three-foot burrito from Manuel Original El Tepeyac Cafe with all the delicious trimmings, and makes sure that everyone gets a slice, covered in her favorite – ranchero sauce! Sadly for AIDS Walk Los Angeles, Debbie will be retiring after this year’s event. Shona expresses everyone’s heart-felt well-wishes over Debbie’s departure: “Debbie’s bright smile and robust laugh are going to be sorely missed! “ She adds, “Ya la extrañamos. La amamos mucho, para, nosotros ella es familia.”
