A Word From The Editors

Inspiration strikes in the unlikeliest of places... BY TERESA MARBOE, AIA AND KATIE CHEVALIER, AIA, LEED AP BD+C

When we mapped out ArchPLUS topics for the year, we used “Stranger Things” as a placeholder name for this issue. We were deep into an obsession with the Netflix television show’s first season, and “stranger things” seemed the perfect way to describe our intent: to showcase architecture that was unusual, daring, and like the show, just plain fun. The name stuck, and as you will see from the contents of this issue, it is a fitting descriptor. The word “strange” has a negative connotation, but the leap from “strange” to “innovative” can often be achieved just by the passage of time. By allowing ourselves to appreciate those things that perplex or unsettle us, perhaps we will unwittingly spark the inspiration for future “strange” - and groundbreaking - design. Look no further than our first feature for an example of extraordinary architecture. Herb Feuerstein, AIA takes us on a tour of Antoni Gaudi’s Barcelona, with anecdotes and photos from his recent trip. Then, we return to our own backyard as Kate Wagner (creator of the popular “McMansion Hell” blog) breaks down Westchester’s architectural antecedents, and the strange things that have informed its vernacular.

And don’t miss the photo collection of “Stranger Architecture” that our members have encountered over the course of their work. We have all been on site visits or field measuring expeditions where we can’t believe what we are seeing, and as the saying goes,“a picture is worth a thousand words.” We hope you enjoy this issue. Solid Ground In 2018 BY RICHARD TORRES, AIA

It is with great humility and gratitude that I have the honor of serving you as your 2018 Chapter President. Never did I think I would be in such an honored position and I thank you all for your confidence. The role will be made infinitely easier by our enthusiastic and motivated board of directors. I look forward to serving with such a diverse and gifted group of professionals, all of whom are “plugged in”, able and eager to move our chapter forward. This year’s agenda will be a reflection of their vision as much as it is of mine. Go AIAWHV 2018! I follow a legacy of leadership that must be recognized. Please join me in extending a very special thank you to our Immediate Past President Mike Berta. May we, the current board, honor your and each our our past president’s commitment to by growing into our service to the chapter. It seems like a lifetime ago that, while at the sink doing the dishes, I took a call from another Past President asking me to consider joining the board of directors. To Mike and all the who have served the long haul, we, the chapter, raise our glass in honor to you. Thank you, Salud, Buen Hecho! (Well Done). While we live in uncertain times. You can have confidence that our chapter is on solid ground. This was not always the case. Not too long ago the chapter struggled and limped along - both finatintically and in lack of motivation. Through the hard work of your board and the forward thinking of chapter leadership, AIAWHV has never been stronger. We move into 2018 with a renewed sense urgency, knowing this crazy world waits for no one. You should all, all 600 plus of you, expect to be hearing from a board member in the coming months. This initiative, started by past leadership, is our commitment to you, the membership, to

have our collective ear to the ground to hear from you. This is your chance to voice needs, concerns, frustrations, failures and triumphs. This is a dangerous thing as we will certainly learn of your misgivings with the chapter’s approach to service. This is precisely the point. With the guidance provided directly from you, we the board of directors, hope to reflect the thoughts of the chapter in a more holistic, inclusive way. We encourage you to engage and to be open, honest and blunt. We hope that you will. We commit to listen to hear and to faithfully present your thoughts for consideration. This will take some time. We anticipate this to be an extended effort that will likely take a year or two not a month or two. I am delighted to inform you that our chapter is the second largest in New York State. We will have many phone calls to make and emails to write. It will be worth the effort as your voice deserves to be heard and you are the constituency we serve. EP CORNER QUARTERLY FEATURE

The resource for Emerging Professional AIA chapter members October was a busy month for the Emerging Professionals. Associates gathered for the evening on October 5th when Michael Riscica, AIA presented ‘How to Get Started with ARE 5.0”. The evening was full of essential content and discussed the importance of licensure for everyone who enters the profession. The attendees were reminded of the chapter’s scholarship program, ARE study sessions and ARE loan library. Michael Riscica added to the collection by donating his own book “How to Pass the Architecture Registration Exam.” We ended the evening with giving away the ARE 5.0 PPD section of the Brightwood ARE study material. Thanks again to Michael for joining us for the evening and enlightening our Associates. Make sure to check out Michael’s book from the AIAWHV study library!

The following week, the Emerging Professionals Committee jointly hosted a happy hour event at the Village Beer Garden in Port Chester with three other professional organizations: SMPS (Society for Marketing Professional Services), CREW (Commercial Real Estate Women), and NSPE (New York State Society of Professional Engineers). AIAWHV members had the opportunity to mingle with other industry professionals, relax over good food and drinks, and of course win Brightwood ARE 5.0 Study Material! If you haven’t made it out to a happy hour yet this year, you have one last chance, on December 14 at the Hudson Grille in White Plains. All are welcome to attend.

ARCHIBRÜ 2017: A Chapter Anniversary Celebration Kenneth K. Stowell Award

ARE Scholarship Winners!

Held at Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. December 1st, 2017 Chapter members, professional affiliates, legislators and public advocates once again joined together to celebrate seventy-eight years of the Chapter’s accomplishments and to celebrate various individuals and companies accomplishments which contributed to the chapter’s success. The fun, festive formal, social evening enjoyed by colleagues and allied professionals was filled with food, spirits, networking, socializing and live entertainment. Attendees were also led on back of house tours of the historic venue highlighted by candid photos of the legendary artists that have performed at the theater. The tours also provided insight into the recent renovations, which respectfully restored the original architecture simultaneously providing modern technology for the high quality entertainment venue. Live music was provided by NOBA, a local band led by one of our own Board Members, Jason Taylor, AIA. Special recognitions honored during the presentation included:

HIGH HONOR AWARD: The Browning School ARCHITECT: Peter Gisolfi Associates Architects + Landscape Architects, LLP LOCATION: New York, New York The Browning School is 56,000 SF K-12 college preparatory school for boys, located on East 62nd Street in New York City. It occupies three adjacent buildings on 12 levels: the original school building from 1922 on the east side, a carriage house in the center, and the lower five floors of an apartment building on the west side. Over the years enrollment in the school increased significantly. Because of this incremental growth, the school occupied mul ple levels, and the spaces within it were dark, cramped, and diďŹ&#x192;cult to navigate. HIGH HONOR AWARD: Pound Ridge Pool House ARCHITECT: Taylor Viazzo Architects, PLLC LOCATION: Pound Ridge, New York A pool house with a year-round second floor art studio was built as a can levering structure beside an exis ng swimming pool. New architectural concrete retaining walls and pa os were built in place of rubble and bluestone that had been failing structurally. HIGH HONOR AWARD: Great Neck Public Library ARCHITECT: KG + D Architects Russell A. Davidson, FAIA LOCATION: Great Neck, New York

The Great Neck Public Library tasked the design team with crea ng a 21st Century Library within the exis ng footprint of the 1970’s building that be er facilitated the library’s programming and featured a more open, user friendly and invi ng environment. To address this challenge, a new entry sequence defined by a con guous stonewall that begins at the entry exterior and is carried through to the rear of the facility was developed in order to create an open, interconnected and flexible floor plan.

HONOR AWARD: Wilson Townhouse Renova on ARCHITECT: Gallin Beeler Design Studio Architects LOCATION: Rye, New York This project is the re-imagina on, reconfigura on and renova on of a townhouse overlooking the Long Island Sound, originally designed by a team which included Edward Durrell Stone. The exis ng boxy interior layout was fully demolished, and por ons of the concrete floors were removed and reconfigured. New skylights above a drama c glass and steel stair allow natural light to filter into the central areas of the three story townhouse. The design uses gentle curves of fine cabinetwork and architectural finishes to direct views out of the townhouse towards spectacular vistas of Milton Harbor and the Marshland County Park. HONOR AWARD: Eagle Hill School Community Room ARCHITECT: KG + D Architects Erik A. Kaeyer, AIA LEED AP principle in charge LOCATION: Greenwich, CT The goal of the Eagle Hill School Community Room project was to create a dually func onal space that could appropriately accomodate community gatherings and assemblies as well as indoor recess and athle c events. The design of the 350-seat mul purpose room sought to capture the in macy of the campus-with a 253-student entrollment-by crea ng a space that feels apprirate and welcoming for a group as small as 20 or as large as 350. The addi on of both fixed and telescoping sea ng addressed the cri cal design challenge of crea ng a mul -func onal space.

Michele Rudolph, AIA LOCATION: Manha an, New York Long me clients hired us to renovate their 1700 SF lo and create a master bedroom with a serene ensuite bath, a new chefâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kitchen integrated with adjacent living spaces, and a new guest bath. Industrial vaulted ceilings and three walls of windows inspired us to try to capture how daylight passes through the apartment. Interior par ons of custom blackened steel and laminated glass panels bring light and mystery. The ceilingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s orthogonal grid floats above the par ons and unifies the lo . LOCATION: Dobbs Ferry, New York A new 10-unit residen al building with a modern aesthe c, located in a largely tradi onal neighborhood near downtown Dobbs Ferry, NY. As a highly visible site in the heart of a historic rivertown, the project ini ally received vehement resistance to its contemporary deisgn from the public and the Village Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals and Architectural Historical Review Board. U lizing massing and scale in keeping with the character of the community, as well as pedestrian-friendly development, this project beat the odds and recieved approvals from the boards and community. HONOR AWARD: Six Ponds ARCHITECT: Stephen Tilly Architect LOCATION: Southern Westchester, NY

In 1950, F.L. Wright disciple Roy Johnson planted this house on the wooded, rocky flank of a stream. His client, designer Arthur Umanoﬀ, guided the stream’s descent through six ponds. Beyond, ancient rock forma ons and na ve trees transformed this suburban property into a Shangri La. For clients seeking a verdant retreat, STA subtly enlarged and refurnished the house, added a garage/studio and immersed a new tea house in the sounds of water cascading between the revived and enhanced ponds. The facility combines a cider interpre ve center, a cider processing and fermenta on facility and a visitor tas ng room and event space into a unique visitor experience. The key goal was to showcase the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s deep commitment to the orchards surrounding the facility and the cra of making premium cider. CITATION AWARD: Fonseca Center for Athle cs and Arts ARCHITECT: Peter Gisolfi Associates, Architects + Landscape Architects, LLP LOCATION: Dobbs Ferry, New York The new Fonseca Center for Athle cs and Arts is on the Masters School campus, a co-ed 5-12 independent school. The 80,000 sf center is organized to promote interac on between the par cipants in various ac vi es, using glass walls between most spaces. The essen al idea is that many ac vi es occur simultaneously and are visible to all. The building is integrated with the surrounding outdoor spaces including an athle c field to the south, an entry courtyard to the north, and an exterior courtyard on the west adjacent to new cafe and the pre-exis ng gymnasium. CITATION AWARD: HRHC Peekskill ARCHITECT: Gallin Beeler Design Studio Architects LOCATION: Peekskill, New York This project is the renova on and expansion of Hudson River Health Care, a not-for-profit federally-qualified health center providing comprehensive primary, dental, preventa ve, and behavioral health services to all who seek it, regardless of insurance status and ability to pay. Hudson River HealthCare’s Peekskill facility was housed in a 1939 building with serious deficiencies, u lizing every square inch of its 24,000 s.f. area. This project renovates the three-story exis ng structure (1037 Main Street) as well as an adjacent one-story former Service Sta on (55 Bank Street), both owned by HRHCare, and inserts a 5,200 s.f. new building between the two exis ng structures. The design scheme creates a cohesive facility from these three components while enhancing connec ons with the surrounding community. CITATION AWARD: Stone Co age ARCHITECT: Studio RAI Architecture Design PC LOCATION: Fairfield County Program: Guest Co age, Outdoor Dining Terrace, and Gardens The goal of the project was to unify two separate lots, one with an exis ng main house and the other vacant land, into one coherent property using architectural and landscape elements. Local stone was used as a unifying material throughout the project within the interior and exterior of the co age and the garden walls. The co age works as a mul -func onal space where recrea on and guest facili es are found. The pergola/outdoor dining terrace is an extension of the co age where seasonal entertainment takes place. Garden paths, plan ngs, and architectural follies create a playful labyrinth throughout the property encouraging outdoor ac vity. This proposed two-story oﬃce building is inspired by the inherent majesty of 19th and early 20th century industrial warehouses. This building features a spacious, open workspace environment flooded with natural daylight through insulated steel windows & further enveloped in exposed brick walls, recliamed mber decking, polished concrete floors and blackened structural steel elements. Corbeled brick banding and gabled roof iden fy the building as a prominent landmark, as well as maintain the building’s con nuity within the residen al fabric of the neighborhood.
